April 23rd is St George’s Day, the festival of England’s
patron saint. George was one of the most famous of the early martyr
saints of the Church, who lived in the third and possibly the fourth
centuries. He was venerated as a soldier saint in the East from early
times, his fame spreading far and wide. He was particularly honoured
in Palestine, where it is believed he was martyred at the end of the
third or the beginning of the fourth century. George was known of in
England well before the Norman Conquest, but it is believed that his
popularity was fostered here by soldiers returning from the crusades.
It is possible that he became the official patron saint of England under
Edward III in the mid-14th Century, but we cannot be sure.
Much of the story of St George is apparently mythological, such as the
tale of the slaying of the dragon, which is almost certainly a later
medieval addition to his legend. His flag is a red cross on a white
ground, which itself was known at least as late as the 14th Century.
(I am indebted to the Penguin Dictionary of Saints, edited by Donald
Attwater, for this information.)
The Scots, Irish and the Welsh have little difficulty in feeling a sense
of national consciousness, of being Scottish or Irish or Welsh. Often
this identification with one’s country has been promoted as a reaction
to the influence of England, the biggest, most populous and wealthiest
part of the United Kingdom, which is natural. For the English, however,
there is a real problem of identity: the English have subsumed Englishness
into Britishness for about 300 years, since the formal union of the
realms of England and Scotland. Whereas other parts of the British Isles
have retained an understanding of their own local character and ethos,
England has tended to lose this awareness of itself as a people, perhaps
because there was less of a need to preserve it in order to maintain
a sense of identity. The English had the British Empire to be proud
of, so they forgot about being English. The rise in immigration in the
post Second World War period, with the arrival of people of other ethnic
and religious origins has contributed further to a confused situation,
in which being English is to feel uncertain of who or what you are.
As we progress into the 21st Century it is time that the English did
recover their identity – not least because the bonds which united the
United Kingdom are diminishing, and the Empire is long gone. It is about
time that the cross of St George was reclaimed from the racists and
the thugs and borne with a healthy pride by the English once more –
not to exclude or to domineer, but simply to restate our claim on our
heritage as we make a future.
Perhaps St George – this ancient saint about whom we know very little
– is a fitting patron still for a nation seeking to find and remould
itself in a new world of uncertain values and changing definitions of
nationhood. What we do know suggests that he was a man of faith, courage
and determination who stood up against evil: we could do with those
qualities in the brave new world we face.

Ufford
Ladies
Our annual meal at Barnsdale Lodge on February 25th was an outstanding
success. All 17 of us sat together at a huge oblong table; we had a
room to ourselves; the food, service and conversation were excellent.
What more could we have asked?
The next meeting will be on Tuesday April 29th at Ufford Village Hall,
starting at 7.45pm. Ian Burrows poses the question “Genes – why are
we what we are?” Guests are always welcome, in particular our friends
from the Buttercross at Bainton. Frieda
Ufford Millennium Fund
We asked for proposals for spending £700 still in the fund. Suggestions
received so far include new church gates (estimates being obtained),
prizes for an extended Arts and Crafts exhibition in June or daffodil
bulbs. Are there any more? Frieda
Strawberry Fayre
A Strawberry Fayre will be held at the Old Rectory on Saturday 7th June
2003 in aid of St Andrew’s Church and Ufford Village Hall. Please note
the date for your diary. Offers of help and ideas, please contact Sally
Hudson on 740475.
Rural Transport Questionnaire
Thanks to the 35 households which returned their questionnaire. The
working party is now able to make some proposals to the City Council.
Although only the 0755 Ufford to Peterborough bus and the 1605 Peterborough
to Ufford bus are well-used, there is evidence of a desire for better
public transport. We rejected the proposal for a community- run minibus
in favour of a minibus service subsidised by the City Council and run
by a private operator. Only a regular, frequent and reliable service
will tempt motorists out of their cars.
We also support the idea of cycleways and footways between the villages.
These would benefit children in particular. Frieda

The opening match of the 2003 season is away against March Town.

Barnack Parish Council Report – March 10th
2003
The Annual Village Assembly was held on Monday 10th March at 7.00, and
reports were heard from City Councillor Mr David Over, PC Norman McCallum,
and many of the local clubs and societies. The guest speaker was Mr
Ben Rushby who explained that the Countryside Agency is willing to provide
up to 75% funding for rural transport projects. This will be discussed
in greater depth at a later date. The issue of Broadband was also raised,
with Mr Andrew Alexander saying that he was spearheading a campaign
to introduce broadband to the village.
The Parish Council Meeting followed the Annual Village Assembly, and
the following issues were discussed:
The government guidelines the number of houses for building development
is 30 houses per hectaire. The Airey house site is 1 hectaire and the
strip of land between that and 1 Linden Close is .1 of a hectare. This
whole matter will be discussed at the April meeting together with the
possibility of a 106 agreement for this site. A representative of ACRE
is to also to be invited to the April meeting in order to discuss the
Parish Plan. A letter is to be written to dog owners regarding fouling
around the village. Radio Cambridgeshire has provided poopa bags, which
are available at the Post Office. No applications have been received
for the position of Clerk.
The Clerk is to action the following:
· A further request will be sent to Peterborough City Council
for maintenance work for Chapel Lane.
· A further letter will be sent requesting more free collections
for bulk waste from pensioner’s homes.
· A further letter is to be written opposing the reduction in
borrowing times from the mobile library.
· A waste bin will be requested for the entrance to the car park
at Hills and Holes on Wittering Road.
· Mr Brian Rowcroft of Peterborough City Council Highways is
to be asked to pay a site visit to address road safety issues including
resurfacing of School Road and the replacement of white and yellow lines.
The full minutes from these meetings are displayed on the village notice
boards and on the Parish Council Web Site at www.barnackparishcouncil.org.
