During the interregnum, the Rector's Letter will feature letters
and articles from a number of contributors. This month, Jessie Goodacre
of Barnack has kindly submitted the following letter:
The Good News Van
Have you seen a notice in the Parish News saying that the Good News
Van will be at The Lodge. Bainton Road. Barnack on the last Monday of
the month, and wondered what it was all about?
The idea for the Good News Van came from a dream Ros Allen had. In that
dream she saw a little white van with the words ‘Christian Book Service’
written on the side, driving along a country lane. Following on from
the Ark Bookshop, which is now called the C.LC. Bookshop, where Christian
books can be bought, the Good News Van was to be a free lending library
travelling around the villages in the Stamford area. Ros chose the name
‘Good News Van’, as the first van was an old news van and Ros had been
reading her Good News Bible.
That first small second-hand van stocked with books was bought with
voluntary contributions and started to visit the homes of people who
had invited them. The books aimed to be attractive-looking paperbacks.
The ones that made the most interesting reading seemed to be those which
told the life story of such people as Corrie ten Boom and her experiences
in the German concentration camp or Jackie Pullinger’s experiences in
the Walled City of Hong Kong. Eventually they were superseded by other
more contemporary stories, but all the time people were interested to
read about someone else’s life story.
The van visits soon also became a popular place for people to meet,
have a cup of coffee or tea, cake or biscuits, and chat. If people wished
they could also browse through the books, which were there to be borrowed.
Some people were wary at first, because the idea had been started by
someone who was an Anglican. Was it right for nonconformists or Roman
Catholics to go to borrow from the van? But people soon realised that
it was a inter-denominational group and that everybody could benefit
from these books.
From that small beginning the idea spread. ‘The Good News Trust’ was
formed, and by September 1999 there were twenty-eight vans nationwide,
each with their team of drivers going out from all points of England
and Wales, visiting wherever they were invited.
John Hardy brings the little blue van to us in Barnack each month. He
walks from Uffington to Stamford to collect the van and brings it to
Barnack so that we are able to choose our books. The book boxes now
contain CD’s videos and tapes for children and adults in addition to
the books.
It was, and still is, ‘Good News Trust’ practice never to ask for funds.
All expenses for the running of the vans, and the buying of the books
are still provided by people giving voluntary contributions.
So next time you see the notice in the Parish News that the Good News
Van free lending library will be at The Lodge Bainton Road, Barnack
please do come along and find out what we do. You will be sure of a
warm welcome whether you are coming for a cuppa and a chat, to meet
friends, or to look at and borrow books, or both. You will not be pressurised
to come again or to borrow books, if it is not your scene, but you will
always be welcome.
Jessie Goodacre
The Good News Van will be at the home of Jessie
and Stan Goodacre, The Lodge, Bainton Road, Barnack on Monday 26th April
from 10.30am.

marriages and deaths etc.
Anyone who would like to send a brief obituary for a loved one, who
has lived in these Parishes, or a birth or marriage announcement,
should email their contribution to the Editor by the copy deadline.
Contributions should be a maximum of 300 words. (It might be necessary
for me to edit contributions, should space be in short supply.) Lisa
Chadwick

Christian Aid Week 9 ~ 15th May
Each year the money collected in Christian Aid Week helps to improve
the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. Even small amounts
of money can make a difference. A sixth of the world’s population suffers
from chronic hunger, but for £1 a family in Sierra Leone can be
provided with enough rice seed to grow food that will last all year.
£10 will provide clean water for a child for life. Each sum given
enables more of this work to happen and is a step towards a better world.
Please give generously in Christian Aid Week.
Barnack Annual Village Assembly and Parish Council
meeting
Village Assembly: The annual village assembly was held on held on Monday
March 8th at 7pm, when reports were heard from city councillor David
Over, the chairman and many of the local clubs and societies.
Guest speaker was Inspector Megicks who gave a short report about policing
the local rural area. He also informed the meeting that the Barnack
Police House was to be reinstated which would include an office. It
was hoped that PC McCallum would be taking up residence at the beginning
of April. This was greeted with appreciation.
It was announced that the target figure for Broadband had been reached
and that BT would shortly install the equipment in the exchange.
Parish Council Meeting - At the parish council meeting which followed
the annual village assembly, among items discussed was the incorrect
positioning of the posts for the activated lights, and the fact that
the 106-agreement money for the stackyard in Pilsgate had been allocated
to the Education Department. A meeting by the Greater Peterborough Partnership
was to be held on April 6th. Four planning applications were considered
by the council. Mr Haines-Eynon then gave an update on the development
of the school grounds project. A full record of the minutes is displayed
on the notice boards in the village and on the web site -www.barnackparishcouncil.org
The next meeting will be held on Monday April 5th. Please note that
this is a week earlier than usual, as the second Monday of the month
falls on Easter Monday.
Darby and Joan Club
Mr Derek Burton (Stamford) showed members some very interesting slides
of his visit to Derbyshire. Mrs Brenda Jackson won the photograph frame
competition, Mrs Hilda Jarvis second and Mrs Dora Green third. Mr Fox

Collector
Wanted for Bainton
We are looking for a replacement collector for contributions for the
Parish News for the village of Bainton. This is not an onerous task.
The collector accepts contributions either via email or on paper via
their letterbox, places all the contributions into one file and emails
it to the editor once a month on the deadline. If you would like to
help by providing this local collection point for villagers, please
contact Lisa Chadwick (details on the back of the magazine).
Many thanks to Julie Stanton who has been the collector for the last
three years
Bainton & Ashton Buttercross Club
We were again pleased to welcome some members from Ufford Ladies Group
to our March meeting - the first of the new season. Our past Chairman,
Marjory Coups was presented with a plant and thanked by Elaine Ward
for her sterling work for the club over the last three years.
The guest speaker was Chris Howes, who gave us a personal account of
his role as Park Ranger at Grimsthorpe Castle. His talk was illustrated
with beautiful slides of the house and parkland and the diversity of
flora and fauna discovered there. Many rare species of butterfly have
been registered and Chris explained how careful management of woodland
and hedgerows is enabling wild orchids to regenerate in previously overgrown
areas. There are also three species of wild deer to be glimpsed and
the extensive Tudor Oak Park offers a haven for wildlife. Our appetites
are now whetted for the July meeting when we shall be visiting Grimsthorpe
Castle to get first hand experience.
Looking forward to the holiday season? Then come along to our next meeting
on April 7th when Margaret Haynes and Linda Parish-Smith will be on
hand to inspire us with their collection of easy care, easy wear clothes
from the ‘Weekender’ collection. They will bring a wide range of clothes
for us to try on - mirrors and a changing area will be provided - and
items can be ordered on the night. Do please come along and bring a
friend (or two)! We look forward to welcoming you. Mary Gowers.

I would like to thank all those who sent sympathy cards on the sudden
death of my wife. It was comforting to know how well known and liked
she was in the area. I thank you all. R. Wolfe
