The Parish Priest’s Letter
Holy Week and Easter are at the very centre of our faith.
It is the time when we think about Jesus' last week in
Jerusalem and day by day discover its meaning for us now.
We begin on Palm Sunday with a procession remembering how
Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and was greeted by
crowds of people.
This reminds us that we, too, need to be willing to enter
Holy Week and follow Christ to the cross. On Maundy Thursday
we remember how Jesus gave new meaning to the Passover meal,
in the breaking of bread and giving of wine which we do at
each Communion Service "in remembrance of him".
We also remember how Jesus washed his disciples feet and
think how we are called to be servants to each other. The
Watch after the service allows us to stay and pray with Jesus
as he awaited his arrest in Gethsemane. The past seems to
merge into the present on this day. Good Friday brings us
to the starkness of the cross; we recognise both the suffering
and the cost of obedience.
On Holy Saturday we greet the first light of Easter, realising that Jesus has
triumphed over the powers of sin and death. The Paschal candle is lit and we
acknowledge the passing from darkness to light in the renewal of our baptismal
vows.
Easter Sunday is when we joyfully greet the risen Lord.
This week is the most important week in the year - without it our faith would
be meaningless. Do try to enter in as much as you can. Everyone, whether a regular
churchgoer or not, is most welcome.
A joyous Easter to you all.

Barnack Baptist Church
As part of this church's lead up to Easter we have embarked on a 40 day
programme reading the Purpose Driven Life, as well as our individual daily
study, the Sunday sermon reflects on an aspect of the books message and
we also meet in small groups, weekly to discuss and debate the book. This
is proving to be an interesting and, at times, challenging journey, as
we explore that key question 'why you are alive' and God's amazing plan
for you both now and for eternity. The Purpose Driven Life is a number
1 international best-seller and a really good read, anytime of the year,
why don't you pick up a copy and see for yourself.
You can find more information on this book at www.purposedrivenlife.com
The Barn Dance held at the end of February raised over £140 for the
Beekeeping project in Brazil, Operation Agri, a big thank you to all those
who came along and supported this.
Do You Want To Make Your Community A Better Place?
All over the country, voluntary organisations are at work to make
our society a better place. And at the heart of every one of them,
from the largest and best known charity to the smallest community
group, there is a board of trustees. You may never see them on
TV or read about them in the press, but the individuals who serve
on trustee boards are making some of the most important decisions
that affect your community.
Could this be you? Could you spare a little time to get to know a
local voluntary organisation and join its management board? They
look for people from a range of backgrounds and would welcome your
views. You would need to go to management meetings probably once
every two or three months, to help make sure the organisation is
run well, in line with its aims. In return you’d have the satisfaction
of seeing your life experience and skills put to good use and benefit
your community.
To find out more about how to become a trustee or if you are already
a trustee and would like to join the trustee network why not contact

PERSONAL NOTICES
Obituary:
Jane Last
Jane died on 7 January 2006 in Norwich aged 50. During the years
she lived years in Barnack she won the admiration of many people
as she successfully managed to combine the role of motherhood with
running a business and yet still finding time for her many friends
and those of her children.
In church she ran the music group with great enthusiasm and a highly
developed sense of humour, often holding rehearsals in her house.
Any child (or adult!) was welcome and encouraged to have fun. School
Road was treated to many an evening listening to the first renditions
of a piece of music often lacking the necessary sharps or flats,
which always seemed to reappear the following Sunday. The first attempt
at Greensleaves was particularly memorable!
Jane could always see the funny side of life and would often have
those next to her in giggles of laughter, sometimes when they should
have been more serious! She never stopped caring for her family,
friends and colleagues. There was always a welcome in her busy house
with dogs, cats and children running round.
Jane and her children left Barnack to share their lives with Douglas
in Norfolk and after only a few months she learnt that she was not
well. She fought very hard against her illness whilst still keeping
her sense of humour. During one stay in hospital, and having trained
as a caterer, she felt the food needed improving and so she invited
the Chief Executive to lunch. He came with the Catering Manager and
an amicable, interesting conversation took place!
We will all miss her and the love and laughter she shared with us.
May God bless Douglas, David, Alison and Paul, and let his light
shine upon her.
PARISH
COUNCIL REPORTS AND NOTICES |
Barnack
Parish Council Report, 13th March
The Annual Parish Assembly took place in the Wilfrid Wood Hall. The
chairman of the parish council, councillors, City Councillor Dr David
Over, the clerk and many residents were present. Guest speakers were
two representatives from Anglian Water who spoke about the recent difficulties
that had been occurring in the village with the drains and sewers.
Further discussion and questions by the public followed. Anglian Water
was thanked for their help and co-operation.
The chairman reported that the clerk is now fully qualified and that
the council work falls into two categories.
Firstly, much of the work prompted by the council is carried out by
Peterborough City Council, road and footpath maintenance for instance.
Speed of traffic and size of lorries is a major concern. The Fix-it
Van does an excellent job around the parish. The council reports repairs
required for street lights, bus shelters, public paths, verge cutting
and abuse of planning permission, amongst others.
Work that is carried out by Barnack Council includes the maintenance
of the churchyard, cemetery and war memorial. This year saw the cemetery
railings painted, the collyweston roof of the cemetery shed repaired,
Neighbourhood Watch signs bought for Pilsgate maintenance of CCTV cameras
for the Post Office, and new trees planted along the B1443 and in the
cemetery. The Village Information Booklet has recently been updated
and will soon be distributed to all households, a village walks leaflet
was produced and the Parish Plan was launched in October. Planning
applications are commented on, and all councillors undertake training.
All policy documents have been updated.
All parish council meetings are public ones. The chairman concluded
with a mention of outstanding work to be completed during the coming
year. A full copy of the report can be seen on the parish notice boards.
The numerous clubs and societies of the parish then gave their reports.
This was followed by a report from Cllr. Over. He mentioned that great
changes were about to take place in Peterborough, with many areas being
redeveloped and schools modernised. The City Council were becoming
more aware of this area being suitable for tourism and leisure. He
thanked the chairman and council for their hard work during the last
year.
The monthly meeting followed. Comments have been sent to Peterborough
and Cambridge concerning the proposals in the Waste and Mineral plan.
Peterborough City Council have reminded the bin men to replace the
bins properly. Please advise the clerk if there are still problems.
BT has informed the council that customers can in future ask for a
free copy of the Peterborough phone directory in place of the S.Lincs
one. PC McCallum has carried out a number of speed checks in the village
recently. There is to be a meeting about concessionary bus fares in
the Town Hall on March 20th .The council is concerned that they are
not being consulted by Peterborough over tree planting in the village.
The full minutes of the meeting are displayed on the notice boards
around the village and on the Parish council website. The next meeting
will be held on April 10th in the Wilfrid Wood Hall. All are welcome.
Ufford Parish Council Meeting March 8th 2006
Neighbourhood Watch: Carol Ashton sent her apologies however her report
was read and circulated prior to the meeting by email. It was agreed
that 2 items should be fed back to Carol. Parking adjacent to the T
junction at the bottom of the hill and antisocial behaviour in Southey
Woods. Carol hopes to be able to attend the April Parish Council meeting
when there will be an extended open forum to allow residents to discuss
policing issues.
Trees up the hill: A letter from Peterborough City Council environmental
services was circulated detailing the poor state of the trees and the
proposed replacement. Following a long discussion it was unanimously
agreed that all the trees should be replaced in October, several emails
supporting this decision had also been received. It was agreed that
this decision should be confirmed to PCC with request for information
as to where the potential replacement trees could be viewed.
It was also agreed that the letter from PCC should be circulated by
email.
Budget: The parish budget was reviewed in light of actual expenditure.
Reserves continue to be low, it was agreed that in accordance with
best practice the general reserve should be increased.
Clerk: Patricia Stuart-Mogg our new Clerk was congratulated on gaining
a distinction in her exams. The next meeting will be on April 12th
in the village hall, at 8:00pm. If you would like to receive neighbourhood
watch and occasional parish information electronically please email

Bainton Parish Council
Our councillors have discussed at length a number of improvements aimed
at bringing council’s service to residents closer to the Quality
Parish Council guidelines. These include agendas explaining exactly
what councillors intend to discuss and minutes available for all to
see. Both of these will be on the notice boards for you to examine.
By the way, both notice boards are being replaced soon with better
quality ones! Heavy lorries and traffic speeding on village
roads continue to be a problem, and the three councils of Bainton & Ashton,
Barnack and Helpston are to have a meeting soon to discuss what can
be done together. VA signs in Bainton are now likely to be erected
soon, we are told! The possibility of gravel pits being opened
up locally is on hold at the moment - a change of regulations has slowed
the process down, and we are not likely to hear the results of applications
till the autumn. The next meeting is on 16th May, with an earlier time
of 7.30pm. The reason is that this will also include the AGM (where
officers are elected) and the Annual Parish meeting, which is an opportunity
for villagers to express their views. This is a once-a-year opportunity
to try and make our villages even more attractive, so even if you don’t
come to meetings normally, try and come to the Reading Room on 16th
May.TG
News from around
the Diocese

Bishop Ian writes:Signs of new
life
On a cold cloudless evening in March, with the temperature
falling to minus 8° C, I drove from Kendal (where my brother and
I had been finally clearing our father's house) to Durham (where I
had a meeting). With the sun setting over the Lake District behind
me, and catching the snow on the Pennines in front, it was a magical
moment. Every detail was crystal clear in the still and frosty air.
As the sun faded, the stars began to appear, with Orion prominent in
the southern sky. It was a privilege to be alive and to able to enjoy
the wonders of creation.
Such moments remind us of the beauty and complexity
of the fragile world we inhabit. We rightly celebrate the abundance
of life and the sheer joy of living amidst its beauty.
But on our televisions
we see pictures of famine in Africa, squalor in slums across the world
and in corners of our cities, human barriers in Palestine, the scars
of war in Iraq. They are a reminder that in many places the world is
in need of regeneration, of the renewal and hope of Easter.
The signs
of Spring are so familiar that it is easy to forget that the annual
renewal of creation is no less the work of God than the renewal of
lives lived in the light of our Easter faith. The transformation in
the life of the earth mirrors the transformation in the disciples'
lives as they met the risen Christ. The flowers which spring from the ‘dead'
seeds and bulbs mirror the renewed life that we experience through
faith in Christ, celebrated in the sacraments of baptism and eucharist.
The five marks of mission, adopted by Anglican and other church bodies
throughout the world, remind us that the church's task is to proclaim
this Easter faith in all its rich diversity. The five marks are: proclaiming
the good news of the kingdom; teaching, baptising and nurturing new
believers; responding to human need in loving service; seeking to transform
the unjust structures of the world; and striving to safeguard the integrity
of creation and sustain the life of the world.
The Easter hope is not
a series of alternatives but an integrated whole. It inspires us to
live God-centred lives, to create a just society, and to care for our
God-given environment.
So as we give God the glory for raising Christ
Jesus from the grave, and for the beauty of his world, let us recommit
ourselves to proclaim his good news for humanity, for society and for
the created order of the world.
Bishop Ian pushes “Boundaries of Unity” at
General Synod
In a full programme of business at the
Church of England's General Synod in February, Bishop Ian received
a warm welcome when he commended Pushing at the Boundaries of Unity ,
a report on current Anglican/Baptist conversations. It was agreed to
encourage these informal discussions, which concentrated on matters
of pastoral oversight rather than doctrine or structural relationships.
This
was just one of many matters considered by General Synod. Three sessions
were devoted to the question of women bishops. After a long and impassioned
debate it was agreed that the proposed “Transferred Episcopal Arrangements” (TEA)
should be further developed. These offer a scheme whereby parishes
not able to accept women bishops could have other episcopal arrangements
without the creation of a new diocese or province within the church.
This was seen as the best way of enabling women to become bishops whilst
preserving unity or, as the Archbishop of Canterbury put it, “godly
concord”.
Other business included the anticipation of the 2007 bicentenary of
the Act for the Abolition of Slavery. This was seen as an opportunity
to, “tell anew the Christian story of creation and redemption”, whilst
owning up to past wrongs and confronting present day forms of slavery.
There was enthusiasm for a review of Reader ministry, in the light
of the growing number of new forms of lay and ordained ministry. Also
for a report, Building Faith in our Future , that highlighted
the care given to ancient church buildings by tens of thousands of
volunteers. It called for greater financial support from the government
for such work.

Lent meetings put the spotlight on worship
The
nature and purpose of worship is the theme for deanery Lent meetings
hosted by Bishop Ian and Bishop Frank this month to launch the
first year of the Diocesan Strategy. The sessions are intended
to give an inspiring start to the first full year of the strategy,
which takes a different them each year.
Clergy, lay ministers and others most closely involved in the conduct
of public worship are attending the meetings. They are invited to
explore new ideas and share candidly about what they find most helpful
in the worship they regularly attend.
The diocesan strategy: “A diocese inspired by God's passion
for the world, building communities which are worship centred, mission
shaped, releasing ministry, and transforming the world.”
Diocesan Conference is well received
Over
300 clergy and licensed lay ministers from the diocese attended the
conference, The Passion and the Call ,
at Swanwick in Derbyshire, during February.
The conference was a
mix of speakers, worship, workshops on various aspects of ministry
and fellowship. Judging by the feedback forms received from participants,
many found the experience a very positive one and returned to their
ministry with renewed vigour.
A copy of the conference report is
available from the diocesan office on request. (All those who receive
DON will get a copy automatically.)
Veteran sacristan retires
Miss Joan
Hansford has played an important part in church life at Holy Cross,
Pattishall, for around 60 years, so it was with some regret that
the PCC finally accepted her retirement from the role of sacristan.
They marked the occasion by taking Joan out for a splendid meal, at
which a presentation was made in appreciation of all that she has done
for the church
