The
Rector’s Final Letter
|
Rector: The Reverend G B Austen M.A. M.Phil. KHT
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford, Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET
Telephone: Stamford 740234 E-mail: austenglobalnet.co.uk
The following is an edited version of the Rector’s
final sermon on 13 July 2003
In the deepest part of the ocean lay the palace of the Sea-King. The
Sea King had six daughters, but the youngest was the loveliest of them
all. Her skin was as delicately-tinted as a rose leaf; her eyes were
as blue as the deepest sea; but, like her sisters, she had no feet:
her body ended in a mermaid’s tail.
The little mermaid fell in love with a human prince and determined to
marry him; and she also longed for a human’s immortal soul. (Sea people
have no souls.) She decided to leave her home and give up everything
to become human; so she went to visit the Sea-Witch.
“I know what you want,” said she. “You’re a fool for your pains! Yet
you shall have your way, my pretty princess.
“I will brew you a potion, and you must swim to land, sit on the shore,
and drink it before sunrise. Your tail will shrivel and split into legs…
but it will hurt, for it will be like a sharp sword piercing you.
“All who see you will say you are the prettiest mortal they ever saw,
but every stride you take will be to you like treading on sharp knives
till the blood flows. If you still choose to suffer all this, I have
the power to help you.”
“I do,” said the little mermaid. Yet her voice trembled, and she was
as pale as death.
The little mermaid chose to leave her home and seek out new possibilities,
adopting a new life which brought her its cost of pain and sorrow; the
old is gone and the new hurts. But there is a necessity to it all: she
is driven by her love and by her desire to seek out the fullness of
humanity. Her departing, you see, brings her both loss and gain. Hopefully
there will be the same gain for us as we leave the familiar and move
on to a new home and a new life.
Why do we do this? Why do we turn our worlds upside-down? The immediate
answer is because circumstances require it: Jobs change, moves become
inevitable. Yet there is another, more profound reason, which is that
life is transient, nothing is permanent. The natural world is constantly
changing: spring follows winter; day follows night; an old man dies,
an infant is born. This is the way of things, and we cannot simply preserve
the present in aspic.
We cannot avoid the pain of endings; but we can gain comfort from the
expectation of new joys, new friendships, new possibilities. Loss and
gain are inseparable.
Jesus Christ gave up heaven; there was a real loss to the incarnation.
He too endured the pain of becoming human – supremely on the cross.
Yet his dying becomes the means by which we are reborn, and without
Good Friday there could not have been Easter Day. Pain and joy are two
sides of the same coin.
The early Christians were called followers of ‘The Way’. This is an
appropriate label for Christians, since the idea of The Way suggests
a road or path, and a road or path suggest a journey.
We are all on a journey, in life as in faith – on a pilgrimage through
this world – and journeys are about movement, not about staying the
same in the same place for ever. That is why it is right to move on,
even though it hurts for the present.
I and my family are leaving, so farewell for now, and God bless you
all. Or perhaps I should say, ‘Au revoir.’

has lived in these Parishes, or a birth or marriage announcement,
should email their contribution to the Editor by the copy deadline.
Contributions should be a maximum of 300 words. (It might be necessary
for me to edit contributions, should space be in short supply.) Lisa

Peterborough Adult Learning Service
For many years Arthur Mellows College at Glinton (latterly City North)
has produced a booklet outlining all the courses on offer in the Glinton
Patch. This booklet was delivered to all households in the area. Community
Education at Glinton has now become part of the Peterborough Adult
Learning Service that is based at Peterborough College of Adult Education
in Brook Street, Peterborough. Our courses will be advertised in their
prospectus which will be delivered to all homes during July. If you
do not receive a prospectus and would like a copy, please telephone
me (Betty Moll, 01733 –252045) at Glinton and I will forward a copy
to you. If you would like to ask about any of the courses on offer
do not hesitate to call me on that number, when I will do my utmost

Exciting plans at Barnack School
An exciting new initiative has been launched to further improve the
facilities available to children at Barnack Primary School.
The project centres around maximising the use of the school grounds
to provide both a stimulating learning environment and additional
play facilities.
Many of you will already be aware of the plans to build a new classroom
on the existing playground at the rear of the school. Work is expected
to start during the summer holidays with the project completed in
December.
This development has afforded the school the opportunity to create
a new playground at the front of the school building - and this too
will be done during the summer break so no play space is lost during
the project.
A major refurbishment of the toilet block and cloakrooms will also
be undertaken affording children easy access to the facilities from
the front of the school.
But in addition to these improvements, a management group has been
established involving children, parents, teachers, governors and the
wider community to consider the most imaginative use of the playing
fields as part of a national initiative called Learning Through Landscape.
It is designed to maximise the use of outdoor facilities for learning
and play but it is hoped that this project will also provide a valuable
asset for the local community.
If you think you may be able to help in any way with this initiative,
please contact Jackie Rowlands on 740640.
St.
Andrew’s Church Ufford
On Friday 14th November there will be a Bridge Supper in Ufford Village
Hall at 7pm for 7.30pm in aid of St. Andrew’s Church. Tickets £12.50
to include Lasagne, Apple Pie and 2 glasses of wine. Tickets and further
information from Sally Hudson tel 740475.
Ufford Ladies
Weren’t we lucky to have such a perfect June evening for our historical
walk through Ufford! The supper at the White Hart which followed was
also enjoyed by all. Our next meeting will be a ‘Coffee and Cake Evening’
at Newe House, Main Street on August 19, starting at 7pm. There will
be a raffle and we hope to raise money for our chosen charity, Hurst
Ward Memorial Fund. Bring along friends and guests. All will be most
welcome.
Report on Ufford Parish Council meetings,
July 9th & l6th
The Chairman, Keith Lievesley, welcomed Mr Graeme Law, Chief Planning
Officer at Peterborough City Council, David Over and two residents to
the first meeting. Most of the meeting was taken up with discussion
over the planning process. An update on our road signs and other transport
issues was given. The 30mph repeater signs are to be removed and Ufford
is on the waiting list for a speed activated warning sign. Are there
any requests for additional street lights? The direction sign near Dovecot
Cottage will be repositioned near the bus shelter, the signs near the
junction will be lowered. Drainage channels will be dug on Marholm Road
to reduce flooding. Concern has been passed on to the City Council about
the long gaps in the older cats eyes (the new ones are excellent), and
the recent removal of some of the red cats’ eyes marking the road edges.
(Their installation we are now told was a mistake by the contractors!)
It was confirmed that the play equipment on the field had been removed
by the City Council ‘for safety reasons’. Please let us know what replacements
you would like -not that there is a guarantee of funding! We are still
waiting for the dog waste bin and the removal of rubbish from the Ashton
corner.
Planning applications were discussed at the second meeting. We had no
objection to the Thorne House application. Although there were no objections
to the principle of replacing the flat-roofed buildings at Clarendon
Cottage, the proposed buildings were quite unacceptable.
Car parking spaces at the top of the village were discussed. We had
already been told by the Highways Department that they would not provide
a cut-out parking space by the bollards, but it was agreed that there
should be enough short-term parking spaces for Village Hall and Church
users and others in the cut-out by Hilltop Cottage, between the Old
Rectory and Church gates and outside the White Hart. Once the footway
above the bollards has been re-surfaced and the verges re-seeded, obviously
no parking will be allowed on the grass.
Complaints have been received about (1) dogs barking and howling in
the night and (2) plants growing over footways. Residents are respectfully
reminded to consider their neighbours in these respects. Frieda

The Barnack and District Horticultural Show and
Craft Fair
This will be held this year on Sunday August 24 at the school in Barnack.
The Show Exhibits will be on view in the school hall; there will be
games, and the craft fair in two marquees full of unique objects made
by local craftsmen, and a wide variety of interest displays on the school
field. Refreshments will be served in the home from home classroom and
for the children there will be a Magic Show and balloon modelling, the
Bouncy Castle, Bungee run, test your strength challenge, try your hand
at archery, a chance to get your nails painted and a body stamp to name
but a few of the things on offer. All we need is a fine afternoon!!
Last year there were a record number of entries for the Horticultural
Show. The committee do hope that there will be even more this year,
but we cannot achieve this without your help. This is your village show,
so please do join in the fun. We all help each other and anyone needing
a bit of help for the assembly of entries has only got to ask. If you
haven’t entered before be brave and be sure you do not get left out.
The list of classes was included in the June issue of the Parish News
and schedules can be obtained from the Post Office in Barnack if you
have not already bought one from our volunteers, who have already visited
every house in our six villages!!
Entries need to be registered at Barnack Village Hall between 6.00 pm.
and 9.00 pm. on Thursday 21 August, so that sufficient room can be allocated
for all the exhibits.
Make sure that you make a note in your diary – Sunday 24 August 2003.
We look forward to seeing you there.
The Show needs your support, do come along and join in the fun.

Church Fete Thanks
The sun shone brightly on a very successful summer fete in Barnack churchyard.
Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make it an enjoyable afternoon.
Special thanks go to the Barnack schoolchildren who entertained us with
their country dancing, to Barnack WI who provided delicious teas, to
Doreen Walsh with her skill with silhouettes, and to the kind gentleman
who loaned the ‘milking cows’, which proved to be very popular with
the younger visitors. £1,440.61 was raised for St. John Baptist
Church, Barnack.
Southorpe Parish Council
Meeting Held On Monday, 9 June 2003
The main points of the meeting were:
Andrew North was thanked for his assistance with the audit which had
resulted in a clean bill of health. Grateful thanks were expressed by
the Councillors.
Councillor David Over reported that the police did not object to a 30
mph speed limit through the village. However they do require other forms
of traffic calming to be installed along with the 30 mph limit. The
Councillors stressed that the village should not become “urbanised”
with illuminated signs etc.
Anglia Water: The Clerk reported that 24 replies had been received from
the questionnaire which had been distributed throughout the village.
The problem seems to effect the Barnack end of the village. Anglian
Water will be conducting a survey of the drains in August and will advise
us of their findings.
RAF Wittering: It was reported that once again the aeroplanes from RAF
Wittering were flying directly over Southorpe making it very difficult
for those working from home to conduct their business. A meeting will
be arranged to discuss the problem with Squadron Leader Walsh in the
near future.
Concern was expressed that due to the increasing number of vehicles
coming through Southorpe, the grass verges on each side of the road
are being eroded. The next meeting of Southorpe Parish Council will
take place on 8 September at Rosemead Cottage, Southorpe.
Farewell Lunch
On Sunday, July 13, Barnack School Hall was filled to capacity as we
said our goodbyes to our Rector, Glyn Austen and his family. Everyone
present enjoyed a delicious lunch, thanks to the generosity of those
who attended. Your help and support was very much appreciated. Thanks
to the lyric-writing skills of our choirmaster, a song about the Rector
was sung with great gusto by the choir, to the amused gathering. We
wish the Rector and his family every happiness for the future.
Advance Notice of the Harvest Lunch
St. John Baptist Church Harvest Lunch will take place on Sunday, September
28th. at 12 noon in Barnack Village Hall.
Tickets priced £6 for adults and £3 for children 12 years
and under will be available from the Social Committee.
There will be a bar and a raffle.
Barnack Bowls Club
Once again, we were blessed with glorious weather for our Internal Gala
Day held on Sunday, 15 June. Twelve teams took part, each consisting
of two Barnack members and two visitors. A close final took place between
Paul Buckley’s team and Brian Bagshaw’s, Paul eventually captaining
the winning team. We are grateful to Mark Hammond who provided the prize
money and it is hoped that the event will have raised around £300
towards Club Funds.
We also had glorious weather for the Buffet Lunch which was once again
generously provided by our Chairman, Frank James and his wife Doreen.
It was a lovely occasion and we are indebted to them both for raising
over £440 for Club Funds which will help to offset the cost of
the proposed extension to the Clubhouse during the closed season.
The winners of the June 200 Club Mega Draw were:
No 1 Mrs Ann Butland £50
No 53 Mr Dave Wilson £30
No 18 Mrs Margaret Andrews £20
No 32 Mrs Rosemary Roberts £10
Barnack Parish Council Meeting
This month’s meeting was held on Monday July 14 in the Wilfrid Wood
Hall.
It was reported that no progress had been made regarding the lorry ban
signs on the B1443 at the Glinton roundabout and High Street St. Martin’s.
Three speakers were welcomed to the meeting. The first was Mrs. J. Rowlands
who informed the meeting about the proposed plans to improve the school
grounds. The project is to develop the grounds for use by the school
and the community.
The second speaker was Mr. G. Law, head of Planning Services at Peterborough
City Council. He spoke about the proposal by Burghley Estates to build
five houses behind the Limes Farm, with access off Orchard Road. These
plans are in the initial stages. Mr. Law advised the council on how
they could get involved before the planning application is submitted.
The council and several members of the public voiced their strong concern
over the access proposals and the amount of heavy traffic that the site
would generate.
Thirdly, Inspector S. Megicks, accompanied by P.C. McCallum, spoke about
policing the Western Sector, of which Barnack is a part. It is a very
large area including much of urban Peterborough as well as rural villages.
The council and members of the public informed him of their anxieties
about the difficulty of reporting incidents to the police and how very
often no action seemed to be taken. The public were urged to report
every incident and he said that every effort was being made to address
the problem.
The mobile phone number of P.C. McCallum given last month was incorrect.
It is 07753 577479 (when on duty.) It hoped that all residents will
shortly be issued with a list of Police contact numbers.
The full minutes of these meetings are displayed on the village notice
boards and on the parish council website at www.barnackparishcouncil.org
The next meeting will be held on September 8th in the Wilfrid Wood Hall.
Everyone is welcome to attend.

Bainton
Family Day
Well, we said it would be a lovely day! The sun shone on the gardens
of Bainton House all afternoon, and smiled kindly on all those who enjoyed
a delicious barbeque, entered the games and the sports, snapped up bargains
from the stalls, or who just sat back and watched. As we always say,
the main purpose of the day is for the whole village family and friends
to have a good time, but we also raise money for the Church and charities,
and total receipts were £1514.88. As was agreed at the preliminary
meeting, we bought some equipment costing around £400 (a bit less
than we thought) including eight gazebos which were a great success.
If any villager wishes to borrow these at any time, please contact Tony
on 740097. With the cost of these, and a few other ins and outs, a net
figure of £1051.32 will go into Church funds. Those attending
the PCC meeting in the autumn will then decide which charities we will
support this year. Many thanks to all who contributed.
Dear Residents of Bainton and Ashton
I am absolutely overwhelmed by the staggering amount of the collection
made on my leaving the Post Office by Sheila, Rene and Zena and other
collectors and I am very touched by your generosity.
Angie and I have decided we would like to buy a piece of antique silver
or porcelain as a constant reminder of you all and of your thoughtfulness.
I would also like to thank the residents of Ufford and Southorpe as
well as Bainton and Ashton for the friendships that we formed over the
past 19 years. I enjoyed my morning chats with all of you!
I am sure that you will be pleased to know that I am finding returning
to my former trade most rewarding although leaving the Post Office after
all those years was not an easy decision to make. (Most of you know
I am quite a cautious person!)
Good health and happiness to you all, and once again my most sincere
thanks.
Robert Smith
Bainton And Ashton Buttercross Club
Wednesday, 2 July, saw about 25 Buttercross members and friends, having
enjoyed some very tasty sandwiches, sitting in the Millstone Pub at
10pm awaiting nightfall. The reason.... our glow-worm hunt in the Hills
and Holes. We set off at 10.15.
I have to confess to being rather disappointed at first. Perhaps I had
imagined great banks of spotlights. In fact each glow-worm shone in
her own space which is understandable as they glow to attract a male!
As our eyes became more accustomed to the search more and more lights
were apparent and the real wonder of nature dawned on me. It was an
experience not to be missed. A secret — we saw more glow-worms on the
verges of Wittering Rd where the grass was shorter!
On Wednesday, August 6th we hold our Family and Friends Boules Evening
at 7.30pm at Bainton House. Please make up teams of four and be prepared
for keen competition! Please note that it does NOT (as written in our
programme) include a barbecue but there will be snacks, squash and wine
available. Our September meeting will be a talk on the Islam faith and
life when we shall be back home in the Reading Room.
