This month’s letter comes from further afield
than usual. A member of the Barnack Church choir, Graham Williams,
is currently serving with the Royal Air Force in Iraq.
LETTER FROM IRAQ
Hello to you all,
This year, I’m taking a longer ‘all expenses paid’ summer break. On
4th June, I was informed that within ten days I was to deploy to Iraq
for four months. Flexibility being the key to air power, I duly completed
the necessary training, drew my desert kit and caught the RAF Tri-Star
flight to Al Udeid in Qatar for onwards move to Basrah Air Station
(also known as Basrah International Airport) by C130 Hercules aircraft.
The air station is part of the Multi-National Division (South-East)
in southern Iraq, which comprises Italian, Belgian, Danish, Dutch
and British forces. Essentially, the station has three main tasks:
to provide airfield services to military and commercial flights; to
act as a transport hub for all military flights to, from and within
theatre; and to assist in the reconstruction of Iraq. This last task
is the most interesting. Using US aid funding, the plan is to refurbish
the airport buildings and services, such as the air terminal and air
traffic control tower, damaged during the war, and to hand over the
running of those facilities to Iraqi control. We call this ‘Commercialisation’.
Since the hand over of power, we are no longer an occupying force
but here by invitation. This has major legal and relationship implications
for us, as our role is now to provide support to the interim Iraqi
government.
So, what is it like here? Well, there’s little greenery in this part
of the country, just sand to the horizon. Most of us are living in
air-conditioned tents and office accommodation. This is just as well
as temperatures are around 46 degrees centigrade during the day and
still rising. (I’ll never complain about the winter temperature in
church again!’ That said, many people work outside, and gradual acclimatization
is essential. Met forecasting is easy : ‘It will be fine for the next
four months with variable wind strengths.’ It does get colder during
the winter months though, especially at night, and I have seen photographs
of my tent under a foot of water during my predecessor’s time. Few
mosquitoes yet – it’s probably too hot; they’ll come with the lower
temperatures later in the year. The food is very good and we have
a bar area, but with a strict ration of beer, and no spirits.
We work a seven-day week. I usually get to work by 7.30am, then there’s
the usual round of morning briefings. These are followed by either
staff work in the office or it’s out and about visiting the sections
and outlying sites, with a break for lunch around 1pm. Evening briefings
are held at 6pm, then dinner, after which it’s back to the office
for a couple of hours, domestic tasks or relaxation. We hold a church
service every Sunday evening using the headquarters’ conference room
next to my office. It had been a said service until my room mate (who
is also a chorister back home) and I arrived!
Is it dangerous out here? The answer has to be yes, but then so are
the roads in UK. The station suffers periodic mortar and rocket attacks,
which are not very pleasant, and roadside improvised explosive devices
are prevalent. But we are all aware of the risks and take the necessary
precautions. Finally, I have to say that we have much sympathy for
the people of Iraq, and hope and pray that the country will embrace
democracy and quickly return to normality, with a minimum of bloodshed.
With best regards,
Graham Williams

The Good News Van
This will not be coming to Barnack during the month of August. From
September onwards it will be coming on the third Tuesday of the month
instead of the last Monday of the month. Monday was a difficult day
for many people, so we hope that the new day will be more convenient.
There will be a coffee morning at the home of Stan and Jesse Goodacre,
The Lodge, Bainton Road, Barnack on Tuesday September 21st at 10.30am
when the Good News Van will be coming, so do come along and enjoy
a social morning. Everyone from all the villages are most welcome.
Some even come from Stamford for our good coffee, cakes and a friendly
chat, not to mention the opportunity to borrow Christian books, videos
and tapes for adults and children – all free of charge.
St
Andrew’s Biannual Quiz
This popular quiz will be held in the Village Hall on Friday 12th November.

Ufford Ladies
We had a wonderful evening at Rasell’s nurseries in June. We were shown
round by Tim Rasell, who has an excellent knowledge of a huge range
of plants, and it was interesting to look behind the scenes as well
as in the colourful beds and glass houses.
We finished the evening at the Willoughby Arms in Little Bytham. Our
next meeting is on Tuesday August 31st at 7.45 in Ufford village hall.
Stephanie Tenneson will tell us about Pilates, a new approach to exercise.
There will be a chance for us all to join in!
Ufford Parish Council meeting, June 23rd
Ian Glew was elected as Chairman. The other councillors remain the same
– Keith Lievesley, Anthony Howells, Will Thompson and Frieda Gosling.
We need your help please:
I. Bus service. Is anyone having problems in getting to work, school,
shops, hospital, doctor? Are there still problems with Dial-a Ride?
2. Bus shelters. Both are rickety and need replacing. Do we still need
bus shelters? If so, of what design?
3. Skateboards. Is there a piece of equipment which could be erected
on the playing field if we can get some funding?
Please let one of the Parish Councillors know your opinions or write
a note to Ken Waller, Briar Way, Marholm Road. Do it NOW.
Planning Matters: Plans for Clarendon Cottage, revised again
with the garage on the north boundary, were discussed and a letter sent
to PCC listing our objections.
It was agreed that the PC should continue to try to conserve our unique
heritage, in particular the Listed Buildings, the Conservation Area,
the streetscape and the open spaces. We should combine with neighbouring
villages in planning and development issues.
Environmental Matters: Road signs; as promised a year ago, all have
been removed, relocated or replaced
Speeding cars and motor cycles: problems have been reported
to PC Norman McCallum.
Drains and sewers: photos will be sent to Highways and City
Planning Departments showing that drains reach capacity 5 minutes after
onset of heavy rain.
Ufford Parish Council meeting, (Planning), July 7th
The Barn; new application — no objections raised.
White Hart , English Heritage has no objections to the French
doors at the front (but they should be half glazed) or to horizontal
cladding on the outbuildings. In view of residents’ strong opinions
as expressed to Councillors and at the recent meeting, the Parish Council
agreed to continue their opposition. The French doors and horizontal
cladding may be acceptable in other parts of England but are not characteristic
of Ufford or other nearby villages.
There will be Conditions attached to Planning Permission regarding possible
noise.
The appeal regarding the sunroom and bay windows to the house behind
Old Forge Cottage: the Inspector decided that the sunroom would
integrate well and would not be visible from Main Street. The ground
floor bay windows would only be visible from Main Street through the
gap between the buildings, similarly those upstairs, and from the back
of some nearby buildings.
Next meeting, August 11th, 8pm. Freida Gosling
St. Andrew’s Church Ufford
A most enjoyable Pimms Pate and pizza evening was held at The Old Rectory
on Friday 16th July. The weather was kind to us and it did not rain!
Our thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Peel and to all who helped and supported
the event. A total of £255.00 was raised towards the cost of a
new blower for the church organ.

Just a reminder to all local members that the meeting on Monday 30th
August has been cancelled and the next meeting will be on 27th September
June Barnack Parish Council Meeting
The AGM of Barnack Parish Council took place on June 21st in the Wilfrid
Wood Hall, followed by the monthly meeting.
Mrs June Woollard was returned to office as Chairman and likewise Mr
Harry Brassey as Vice Chairman. The other newly elected councillors
are Mrs Sheila Berrill, Dr Ian Burrows, Mrs Dorothy Dolby, Mr Peter
Farrer and Mr Brian Palmer.
The development of the school grounds was discussed together with the
proposed new school entrance on Bainton Road. A letter is to be sent
to BT requesting that in future residents receive the Peterborough phone
book and not the S.Lincs one. The Weighbridge in Station Yard is deteriorating
and the council are enquiring as to whether it could become a listed
building. More litterbins are to be requested for the Hills and Holes.
Planning permission has been granted for the gazebo at the school.
Please note that new bus timetables are available from the Post Office.
A red taxi bus has replaced the Mark Bland Service 310 and 312. It is
operated by Bettacars Village Link and runs between Edith Cavell Hospital
and Stamford bus station. The early morning service now departs at 8.33am
from Barnack Square and arrives at Stamford College at 8.45am via Morrisons.
The timetables are also displayed in the bus shelters.
Councillor David Over was congratulated on his -election, and he thanked
residents for voting him back into office.
The full minutes are displayed on the village notice boards and on the
web site www.barnackparishcouncil.org
July Barnack Parish Council Meeting
The July meeting of Barnack Parish Council took place on July 12th in
the Wilfrid Wood Hall. All members of the council were present and two
members of the public. The public is very welcome to attend the council
meetings, which take place on the second Monday of the month except
for August and December.
An application is to be made to English Heritage to have the weighbridge
in station yard listed. Two new seats in the village are also to be
requested, one in Uffington Road and the other half way to Pilsgate.
Additional lighting near the cricket club and in Little Northfields
is to be sought. The clerk is to obtain quotes for the repainting of
the cemetery railings.
The front churchyard wall is to be repaired in places. It would be appreciated
if parents did not allow their children to climb on this wall, as repairs
are very costly.
The appeal for the Burghley House Preservation Trust application for
an Industrial Development on the Barnack Road will be held in Stamford
on October 26th-29th at the Town Hall. The council will be represented.
There were no objections to planning applications for a porch at 21
Bainton Road and a new dwelling at 29 Uffington Road. Anxieties were
expressed by the council concerning the visual aspect of black railings
in a conservation area at the proposed new school entrance on Bainton
Road and also for the safety aspect on a very busy road,
A full copy of the minutes can be seen on the village notice boards
and also on the web site www.barnackparishcouncil.org. The next meeting
will take place on September 13th at 7.30 pm.
Safari Supper 2004
A village Safari Supper has been planned for Saturday 18th September.
This is always a fantastic local event and we are hoping to encourage
even more villagers this year so for full details contact either Philip
01780 740785 or Mark 01780 740017.
Barnack Church Patronal Weekend
Many thanks to all those who contributed in any way to the Concert and
Fete—two happy and enjoyable occasions. Special thanks to Sid for opening
the Fete, to the W.I. for delicious teas and to Ivor for transporting
everything to and from the Village Hall.
The next challenge for the Social Committee is the Harvest Lunch, 10th
October in the Village Hall at noon. Tickets are £6, children
12 years and under £3. Contact Ann Davies on 740403.
Southorpe Parish Council
The AGM had been delayed due to the local elections and was held on
21st June.
The Chairman reported that it had been a successful year for Southorpe.
The 30mph speed limit was at last obtained, the old railway bridge at
the south end of the village repaired and the sewage problems appear
to be resolved. The Parish Council are in discussions with RAF Wittering
regarding the low flying aircraft over the village as this is still
a problem. An excellent fireworks and bonfire party had been held on
5th November with a good turnout. The Chairman thanked the Entertainments
Chairman and Committee for their help in making this event so worthwhile.
Unfortunately the village picnic had not been so well attended and therefore
it has been decided not to hold one this year. If anyone in the village
has any ideas for events the Parish Council would be pleased to hear
from them.
John Honour had decided to resign from the Parish Council and the Chairman
thanked him for all his effort over the years and knew he would be greatly
missed. However, Helena Carr has been elected in his place and she was
welcomed to the Parish Council. The Chairman thanked his fellow Councillors
and the Clerk for all the work they had done over the year.
Barnack Baptist Church
As you will see from the inside front cover we will be holding services
during this month, unlike previous years where we have had a short break
in Services. These services will be starting at 9:30am and hour earlier
than our normal start and they will short and informal, everyone is
very welcome.
The church enjoyed a great trip to Hunstanton recently, billed as the
all age Sunday School summer outing, well over 30 of us enjoyed a day
on the beach, playing cricket, rounders, boule and of course building
sand castles, AND no rain, well hardly any. We pretty much had the whole
beach to ourselves, although there were a few people in the distance
pointing and scratching their heads wondering where we came from. If
you want to see pictures, showing just how much fun you can have on
a beach, even if it is a bit cloudy/chilly/rainy, then come along to
one of our services, we have pictures displayed. I’m sure we’ll need
two coaches for next years trip.
Barnack Bowls Club
Winners of the July 200 Club Draw were:
No 36 Mr George Unsworth £25
No 51 Mr Peter Sindall £15
No 46 Miss Lyn Huckerby £10
Yet again the weather was kind to us for the Buffet Lunch on 4th July,
which took place once more in the garden of Frank and Doreen James -
who also provided the very tasty main course. The members of the club
are most grateful to Frank and Doreen for all their work and as a mark
of their appreciation of Frank’s 10 years as Chairman of the Club, he
was presented with a painting of the Bowls Rink.
Colin Swann Day took place on Sunday, 11th July, and the eventual winners
were:
Alan Rice, Brian Walsh and Christine Ford - the runners-up being: Paul
Buckley, Dick Ford and Doreen Rice.

3rd July, we raised a further £140.76 for our funds, including
a donation of £5. The next Coffee Morning will be on Saturday
7th August at the usual time of 10 am to 11.30 when we hope you will
be able to join us again.

Club every other Thursday for a lively and entertaining game of Bingo
with Roger Redcoat. Check dates and times with the Post Office.
Barnack WI
The July meeting was held on Tuesday 13th. Birthday buttonholes were
unavailable and will be presented at the next meeting. The raffle was
won by Jill Miller and the competition by Edna Tongue.
The speaker for the evening was Mrs. Wendy Chew who gave a moving account,
accompanied by slides and a video, of her work for the charity “Hope
and Homes for Children”. This started in Romania and works to place
children orphaned by war or revolution in family units in good homes,
rather than leave them in grim institutions. The charity has now also
extended its work to Africa where so many children have been orphaned
as a result of AIDS. The talk prompted many questions after which Val
Sheldon proposed a vote of thanks.
There is no meeting in August but we are providing lunches and teas
at the Horticultural Show on Sunday August 15th. We need more helpers
for this so if you have not yet volunteered but can help please offer
your services to any member of the committee.
The September meeting will be on Tuesday 14th September. New members
are always welcome.
Barnack Cricket Club
The Youth section continues to flourish with teams at Under 11, Under
13, Under 15 and Under 17, with David Alvey’s under 13’s reaching the
final of the Border Counties League Cup. In addition the Club stages
two major matches during August:
on Wednesday August 11th, Huntingdonshire under 13 take on Essex; and
on Bank Holiday Monday (30th), starting at 12 noon, it is the final
of the John Wilcox Trophy for senior teams in the Rutland League.
It is disappointing to report, yet again, that some inconsiderate dog
owners are allowing their pets to foul the playing field. This is not
only unpleasant but a potential health hazard, particularly to our young
players. Please clear up after your dog. DS
Bainton
& Ashton Buttercross Club
On Wed 7th July 23 members and friends set off in strong winds and imminent
rain storms for Grimsthorpe Castle. We survived our windswept tour of
the gardens which were in fact extremely interesting with designs initiated
centuries ago.
We then had our tour of the Castle. Our two guides were excellent and
it was a fascinating trip back in history to the origin of Grimsthorpe
and its subsequent development into the Castle and contents that we
now can see. Ravenous by then, we headed for the Black Horse Inn for
a delicious buffet supper (remember the beef?). It was a lovely evening
together.
Please note that our usual date for August has unfortunately had to
be cancelled and instead we shall repeat the popular Family Boules Evening
at Bainton House on August 25th Time 6.30pm; snacks and refreshments
available. Please bring your own Boules set if you have one but they
will be provided otherwise. Come singly or in pairs and be prepared
for a good evening.
One week later on Sept 1st our normal month’s meeting will be an illustrated
talk by the well-known Phillippa Massey on Stamford’s “High Street Shops”
Please note the date . Everyone is welcome. J.M.
Bainton Church Cleaning
The church will be cleaned on August 5th, September 2nd, October 7th,
November 4th and December 2nd at 2pm. Volunteers welcome!
Bainton & Ashton Parish Council
The council meeting was held on 22nd June, with all our new councillors
present - Chris Agnew, Sheila Dalton, Judith Morrice, Andy Totten and
Paul Buckley. David Over, the newly elected City Councillor, was also
there. Another lively meeting, with important village issues discussed.
It looks as though Ashton houses will all have numbers and road names
soon (a government initiative) and David Over is talking to those
in authority to see if residents can have a say in the choice of road
names. Discussions are being held regarding the expansion of housing
in rural areas - this could mean Bainton/Ashton. We are discussing with
other local councils the best way forward. Cllr. Andy Totten is heading
this up for our villages. We are receiving reports on dog fouling in
Ashton. Dog owners, please take the necessary with you when exercising
your dog! Next meeting 7th September. AG
Bainton And Ashton Family Day
Well, don’t say we didn’t promise you! Once again Family Day was
a huge success, with everyone having a great time. The weather kept
dry (well, almost) the stalls were brimming with good things, the games
were great and the sports fantastic. A celebrity appearance came from
Arnold, the ram, who invited us to guess his weight. All in all, a memorable
day. Thanks must go to Major and Mrs Birkbeck, not only for the kind
use of their house and grounds, but also for their generous supply of
goods and hard work. Thanks also to all from the village who helped,
those who joined in and those who spent money. About £1,000 was
raised - this goes initially to Church funds, but most is donated to
worthwhile causes at the PCC meeting in the autumn. Keep an eye open
for photos in the village hall.
Bainton And Ashton Tennis Tournament
The first annual tennis tournament was held in June, with 8 mixed
doubles teams entering the senior competition and 4 teams in the
juniors.
The seniors was won by Nigel and Nicola Clough, who sailed through convincingly,
winning their three contests by 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2. The juniors was won
by David Burt and Simone Cutler. It is hoped to have another contest
soon - watch this space!

and culminating in a Barbecue and Final on Friday evening September
11th contact either Nigel and Nicola Clough on 740043 or Bill and Mary
Birkbeck on 740227 by 31st July.

of papers and magazines from the shop in Red Lion Square. We hope the
deliveries will start in August, so please return your forms as soon
as possible. If you have any problems, please contact Paul Buckley,
Ashton – Tel: 740646 or Sheila Dalton, Bainton – Tel: 740019. SD
