Pause for Though from Parish Priest:
Canon Margaret Venables
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford,
Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET
August is the month of travel for many people - especially
those tied in to school holidays, but how do we like to think
about ourselves - as tourists or travellers or even pilgrims?
And how did it all start?
Pilgrimage has always had deep significance. Pilgrimages
to Jerusalem and Mecca, Varanasi and Rome, Compostela and
Lourdes, are often made in fulfilment of some vow or in order
to deepen the sense of the divine. Mediaeval pilgrimage (think
of Chaucer and his merry band setting out from the Tabard
Inn for Canterbury) was a deeply social as much as a religious
experience. The ultimate aim was to reach the shrine, but
the immediate concern was the journey - and the spiritual
value of travel for its own sake. Sadly today as we await
delayed flights in overheated airports, or tangle with queues
of traffic at car ferry terminals it is often impossible
to think of the actual travelling in terms of anything other
than a necessary evil to reach a particular destination.
Mass tourism began on 5 July 1841 when Thomas Cook arranged
to take a large group of people on a day trip from Leicester
to Loughborough. He did not think of it as a ‘package
tour', of course. It had a much more serious purpose, for
Cook was a Baptist preacher, a teetotaller with a passion
to spread the gospel of temperance. His ideas was that such
an excursion might develop into a more suitable form of recreation
than that currently available at the town's taverns and at
the local racecourse. Cook did a deal with the secretary
of the newly opened Midland Counties Railway Company for
a return fare of a shilling per head. When the great day
came, brass bands and a crowd of onlookers sent the excursionists
on their way. At their destination they 'perambulated the
town in goodly array' according to a report in the local
newspaper. They played jolly games, drank endless cups of
tea and held a meeting full of long and earnest speeches.
The day finally done, a well-satisfied Cook declared, no
doubt with one eye on the future: 'One cheer for Teetotalism
and Railwayism!.’ There does seem to be a cruel irony
in the way Mr Cook's business, begun with such a noble purpose,
has attracted some quite derogatory overtones. A 'Cook's
Tour' has now come to mean a very superficial introduction
to a subject or place.
However, we are fortunate that we do have an opportunity
to be travellers or tourists or pilgrims, whatever we choose
to call ourselves . We can journey out of the normal round
of life, enter a different world and find something new -
even if it only a day's outing.
The aspect of pilgrimage I think we should try to hold onto
is that of friendships formed or deepened by the experience
of travelling together. If we regard the journey itself as
an integral part of the adventure. There may be even greater
riches given us than we could possibly conceive.
Happy travelling!
Margaret

Buttercross Club
Our July meeting was a walk around Clare’s Helpston with Mr.
Moyse of the John Clare Society. We were given an update on the plans
for Clare’s cottage and visited significant places from his
life there. It was a lovely evening for the walk and we concluded
with a delicious supper at the Blue Bell Inn. August 2nd will be
the annual Boules evening in the grounds of Bainton House. EVERYONE
is welcome to join in this popular event - so get a team together
or just come along and find partners there. If you have a boules
set, please bring them along on the evening. Light refreshments will
be available and prizes for the winning teams! See you there! MG
Barnack Bowls Club
The winners of the July 200 Club draw were:
No 44 Pat Barton £25
No 36 George Unsworth £15
No 29 Diane Lunn £10
The Annual Buffet Lunch took place at the home of the Chairman, Phil
Collins, on Sunday 9th July. Forty-eight members and friends enjoyed
the delicious meal which had been prepared by the Chairman’s
wife, Adrienne Collins, and her helpers, June Woollard and June Francis
and supplemented with mouth-watering sweets provided by various club
members. The weather was kind to us yet again and this annual event
has certainly become a red letter day on the Club Calendar.
Barnack Parish Church Summer Events
The sun shone brightly for the Summer Fete this year, so there were
sighs of relief all round. No last minute dashing into the church
out of the rain. Laden stalls and smiling stall holders welcomed
all those who attended. We wish to thank all who worked so hard to
make this event such a success. If there is anyone out there who
has not sampled the wonderful teas provided by Barnack WI, may we
recommend them to you next year. The cake baking skills of the ladies
of Barnack WI would tempt even the most ardent dieter.
The following Friday evening the church hosted a concert, which proved
yet again how much talent we have in the village. Youngsters played
instruments, choristers sang, and poems and prose, both thought provoking
and amusing, were read to an appreciative audience. We must mention
Mrs. Lena Grant, who in her nineties, put us all to shame with her
wonderful memory, as she recited her chosen poems. Everyone enjoyed
a light supper provided by the Social Committee.
These two happy occasions raised £1,648.46 for St. John the
Baptist Church.
Barnack Baptist Church
We extend a warm welcome to everyone for their All Age café style
services which take place during the summer from 23rd July – 27th
August. Meetings start at 9.30am with coffee and croissants.
The Good News
The Good News van will not be visiting Barnack during August but
will return on 19th September.
Barnack Methodist Chapel
We had to bring in an extra table for coffee at our July Cake Stall
and the end result was that with your support we raised a further £145.55
for our funds, including a donation of £10. Thank you very
much. Our next Coffee Morning and Cake Stall will be held on Saturday,
5th August, from 10 am to 11 am and we look forward to seeing you
then. Fairtrade products will also be on sale.
Ufford Village Hall.
We would like to thank everyone who took part in the Garage Sales
and Art Exhibition. It was a great weekend and the twelve stall-holders
did very well continually manning their stalls for two days. In November
we are holding an Art and Crafts weekend so hope you will join us
then. We raised a total of £63. 00 from stall hire; this gave £31.50
for the Church and £31.50 for the Village Hall. Thank you,
Sally Ward.
Open Fellowship
There will be no Open Fellowship meeting in August.
Royal British Legion
Recent and future activities include:
1) Marking the occasion and flying the flag on the new ‘Veterans
Day’ in June.
2) Attendance at the Dedication Ceremony of the new Standard of the
Stamford Branch at a Drumhead Service and March Past in Stamford
on June 25th. Our Standard and escorting party were on parade.
3) A wreath and plaque were placed at the village War Memorial on
1st July to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of the
Somme, in which 4 local men lost their lives out of the 400,000 British
casualties incurred in that terrible campaign. John Berridge (2nd
Northants) - George Latchford (6th Northants) George Snart (7th Lincolns)
- Edward Smalley (Pilsgate / Royal Dublin Fusiliers)
4) Attendance at a special ceremony in Stamford to mark the Somme
fallen - also on July 1st.
5) RAF WITTERING Families Day - July 6th. A party of a dozen or so
members enjoyed a superb flying display by a selection of aircraft,
helicopters, gliders and parachutists - including the Red Arrows
and Battle of Britain Flight. We were invited especially to mark
the close association of Barnack and district over the past 90 years
since the base was set up in 1916.
6) Summer Evening Flying Display at Swiss Garden, Old Warden, Beds,
July 15th. At the time of writing we are assembling a group to enjoy
a runwayside picnic and flying display by this unique collection
of vintage aircraft.
7) Special forthcoming event - Summer Evening Party, Millstone Inn,
Barnack, Wednesday August 16th 7pm.
Also commemorating the 85th Anniversary of the formation of the Royal
British Legion. A popular and well established social occasion for
the village with excellent fare and good company! Please let us know

Bainton And Ashton Family Day
Once again, the weather turned up trumps for , and a particularly
happy day it was. There was a good village atmosphere - some said
the best ever! It was good to see some of our new villagers come
along and we hope they felt welcome. Many children produced home
made flags for the ‘design-a-flag’ competition. Many
thanks to Michelle for coming up with the idea, and producing a juggler
who had his own captive audience. Thanks to Ro for judging the competition.
Thanks also to all stallholders, sideshow specialists, those who
baked or provided produce or stall items, Pat and Eric and Martin
the Ram who became friends with many admirers. Particular thanks,
as ever, to Major and Mrs Birkbeck and their family for their kind
generosity and hard work - it was good to see Bill in circulation
again! A particularly enjoyable open air Church service was held
in the grounds at the end of the afternoon. Total funds raised
for the day was £1454 - £270 higher than last year. After
expenses, £1254 will go to Church funds, and about half of
this will be donated to various charities in October. One of
the ‘expenses’ was the purchase of the big marquee (9
yards x 3yds) which provided some welcome shade. This belongs to
the village and, together with the 8 gazebos, can be used by any
villagers. Hire to villagers is free, but if you wish to donate,
a sum of £1 per day (gazebos) or £5 per day (marquee)
would be welcome. Bookings via Tony on 740097.
Ufford Ladies
Ufford Ladies enjoyed a pleasant evening at the Four Acres Gardens,
Pinchbeck. Our host gave an interesting talk on the development of
the gardens and the evening ended with light refreshments.
On Tuesday August 22nd there will be a guided tour of the Town Hall,
Stamford. We will meet at 6.40pm for the tour to start at 6.45pm
and finish at 8.15pm. The evening will end with refreshments at the
Arts Centre at 8.30pm. Anyone wishing to join us, please ring 01780
740844.
Quiz Night
Yippee, the chips are down at Barnack’s popular Quiz night
at the Millstone Inn.
There was a minor problem recently with irregularly shaped, burnt
bowling balls served up in place of the famous freshly fried french
fry fare, but with Mr Plod safely dispatched to the Police Cadet’s
Boot Camp that should be the end of that! Other news: There is also
a new management team at the Millstone and it is hoped that the Sunday
evening Quiz night, from 8pm at The Millstone Inn, will resume as
has become the norm. Our lauded MC has requested usual attendance.
Huge laughs as ever!
New Members Always Welcome

the fabric of the church for a great many years now. Why not consider
joining? The 200-club subscription is only £15 per year with
cash prize draws every month. Should you be interested in joining
this marvellous cause and becoming a Friend of Barnack Church please

The successful winners for the July draw will be announced in the
September issue along with the August winners.
Barnack & District Horticultural Show Update
It is with some regret that due to the late formation of the new
show committee that this year’s event has been suspended. However,
don’t dismay. This allows a full year of preparation for the
2007 show and with an energetic core committee now in place, first
meeting in early October, a most splendid summer village event in
2007 is predicted. A gardening tsar would be a most welcome addition
to the committee. So, if you have any useful information on previous
show formats, or some great ideas, thoughts and suggestions on how
we can all make the 2007 show a great success, we’d love to
hear from you. Are you a business that would like to talk about sponsorships
and/or advertising opportunities, or maybe even exhibiting in some
way? Bryan Lee would love to hear from you, he can be contacted on
01780 740239. Make the 2007 Barnack & District Horticultural
Show the village event of the year.
Horticultural Show Trophies
As there is not going to be a Horticultural Show and Family Day this
year, would anyone at present holding a cup or trophy from last year
please return it to June Woollard for safe keeping until the next
show is held.
Parish Council Reports and Notices
Bainton
And Ashton Parish Council
A busy council meeting was held on 4th July. All councillors were present,
together with Coun David Over (City councillor) and 5 members of the
public. Vehicle Activated signs are now satisfactorily erected and,
hopefully, these will cut speeding down on the B1443. Other initiatives
to help this and also cut down unauthorised HGVs are ongoing. We now
have a full timetable to consider proposals for mineral extraction
sites (we have three in the parish) and details can be seen in the
minutes on the notice board. The problems regarding bus fares to Stamford
are being taken seriously by Peterborough City Council, and we are
hoping for changes soon- perhaps next year. The condition of the road
verges in Ashton continues to be a concern, and a list of options has
been constructed and will be evaluated. Proposals to build to the rear
of Bramley Lodge were considered and views sent to Planning Dept.
If you have any views on village matters you would like to raise, please

Barnack Parish Council Report July
The monthly Parish Council Meeting took place on July 10th in the village
hall. The chairman, four councillors, the clerk, Cllr David Over and
three members of the public were present.
New bus shelters are to be requested for the village. Peterborough
City Council wish to remove the one in the square as it has become
unsafe. Two new seats and repairs to existing ones around the village
are to take place. Residents are reminded again not to place unsuitable
material down the drains as once more a blockage has occurred –this
time outside the Village Hall. Residents are also reminded that it
is their responsibility to maintain the drains from their house to
the main drain in the road as these are not the responsibility of Anglian
Water.
The chairman attended the court hearing about the closure of the lay-by
on Uffington Road only to learn that it has been postponed until September.
Mr Palmer the Community Association reported to the council about the
recent meeting held by the Association concerning the proposed new
community building.
It was announced that Barnack Council had achieved Quality Status.
The Chairman, clerk and councillors have worked hard to achieve this
recognition and it should bring real benefit not only to the council
but to the people it serves.
If any resident of Barnack wishes to suppress the future delivery of
the South Lincolnshire Phone Book they can, by calling 0800 833 400
option 1. A free copy of the Peterborough Phone Book can then be ordered.
The full minutes of the meeting are displayed on the notice boards
around the village and on the website www.barnackparishcouncil.org.
The next meeting will be held on September 11th unless otherwise covened.
All are welcome.

Report on Ufford Parish Council Meeting July 12th 2006
Welcome to new Ufford Parish Councillor, Graham Bowes.
Trees on Ufford Hill
· The most important point is that whatever species is chosen
that they continue to present a landmark feature of the village,
· A summary of the letter from PCC arboriculturalist was given.
In his opinion, none of the tree species proposed by UPC was considered
to be suitable. He said that the existing trees – Acer platanoides,
(Norway maple) were not ideal as they offered little visual interest
to the village and little wildlife value. He agreed with our criteria:
· Trees should be aesthetically attractive as the site is visually
important. We would like to leave a worthwhile heritage for generations
to come.
· They should tolerate limestone soils and possible future water
shortages.
· Their roots should help to build up the bank and should not
cause damage to nearby buildings.
· They should be able to withstand occasional windy conditions.
· Native British species are preferred as they are most beneficial
to wildlife.
· Their initial size should be significant to minimise the loss
of the existing trees and reduce the risks of vandalism.
He sent a list of 19 species, which he considered suitable. However,
when UPC scrutinised them, all had disadvantages. Half would have had
to be replaced in 20 years due to root disturbance to adjacent properties
and many of the rest were shrubs or bushes, not trees. UPC propose
to arrange a meeting for further discussions with the arboriculturalist
and will try to visit a tree nursery. Suggestions from residents will
be welcomed.
UPC agreed its revised policies and planning aims as well as the revised
budgetary process – residents should refer to the agenda or minutes
on the notice board for details.
The Parish Council undertook the quarterly review of its finances.
Village organisations wishing to apply for funding in the 2007-8 financial
year are requested to obtain details from any parish councillor. Applications
for funding must be received in writing by the end of November. Applications
will be considered in December.
Water pressure and supply
There are serious problems at the lower end of the village. Following
the 3 bursts during maintenance, Anglian Water was contacted but no
formal reply has been received.
Parking in Main Street
Serious inconvenience is being caused to other road users, in particular
the Refuse Collection vehicle and farm machinery, by parking of building
contractors vehicles and patrons of the public house. Contractors & patrons
requested to park on site if possible & with consideration for
other road users & residents.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday August 9th at 8pm in Ufford Village
Hall.
News from around
the Diocese
Bishop
Ian writes
Space to listen, debate and walk in communion
Will the next Bishop of Peterborough be a woman? Probably not. The
General Synod did indeed give considerable support to the majority
view of the House of Bishops, “that admitting women to the episcopate
of the Church of England is consonant with the faith of the Church
as the Church of England has received it and would be a proper development
in proclaiming afresh in this generation the grace and truth of Christ”.
But in spite of that it will take some years for the necessary legislation
to be drafted and considered by the synods – including our Diocesan
Synod.
The commitment the Synod also made to maintain “the highest
degree of communion” with those who cannot accept the House of
Bishops’ view means that we will want to continue a careful process
of listening to each other. That will take time, attentiveness and
theological discussion.
The life of the church must always involve an openness to listen to
scripture, to the wisdom of our predecessors (what we call “tradition”),
to each other and to the questions our society addresses to us. At
parish, deanery and diocesan levels we will therefore want, as the
Synod motion said, “to continue a serious debate and reflection
on the theological, practical, ecumenical and missiological aspects
of the issue”. Synodical language is not always simple – but
then there are many facets to the issue. I hope in this diocese we
will engage in the debate with openness, enthusiasm and a desire to
discern God’s will.
There are clear differences in our interpretation of the apostolic
witness in scripture, in the weight we give to different strands in
our tradition and in our reasoned reflections on contemporary questions.
When that is the case we need to give attentive space to each other.
If we cannot agree (although I hope we might find more areas of agreement
than we might imagine) we then need to find ways of walking in communion
which allows us to continue to proclaim our common faith and discipleship,
and to honour those who disagree with the majority view (whatever that
might be).
So I welcome the space and the debate the Synod has commended and
look forward to seeking God’s mind with those among whom I serve
and whom I am called to lead.
+ Ian, Bishop of Peterborough
Youth officer pours cold water on Pentecost
service
Pentecost Sunday (4 June) was a scorcher.
It's just as well, because Diocesan Youth Officer, Paul Niemiec,
began his sermon at the family service at Eydon St Nicholas by emptying
a bucket of cold water over himself!
“The water of baptism
reaches the bits (and sins) that other things don't”, he explained
to a gasping congregation of around 130 adults and children, including
two baptism families.
The open air service at Eydon Sports Field
was planned months in advance and was a new departure for the church.
The outdoor venue surprised and delighted the baptism parties and
children at the service enjoyed throwing frisbies at various upright ‘sin'
dragons, and watching as a large Pentecostal balloon was inflated
then chased across the field.
The baptisms were performed using a
small portable font and the youngest children had made ‘well-dressing'
flower pictures to prop up against the ‘altar'.
Lots of helpers, extra
musicians recruited from neighbouring Woodford Halse, a small hired
Merry-go-round and a bar and barbecue for afterwards, all contributed
to the occasion.
Revd Tim Oakley, Vicar of Woodford Halse with Eydon,
described the service as “well worth doing, but not every week!”
Mission amongst the bluebells at Slapton
The
bluebell woods between Slapton and Wappenham are at their most beautiful
in May, so St Botolph's church in the tiny village of Slapton seized
the opportunity to hold a service there during Towcester deanery mission.
Revd Vic Read preached about the importance of taking God's love to others
and following the service the congregation of villagers (plus a few dogs)
enjoyed a picnic amongst the sweet smelling bluebells.
Meet the Deacons
The five Deacons ordained on 2 July
brings to seven the total of newly ordained clergy in the diocese this
year (Beatrice Brandon and Morey Gompertz being ordained in February).
The new Deacons have been called from all sorts of walks of life to their
new role as ordained ministers.
Naomi Hill (St Giles,
Northampton) describes
herself as ”a member of Generation X”. Before training in Oxford, she
worked in Sheffield and was active in “one of the largest churches
in the north of England”. Northamptonshire is new to her but she is
very much looking forward to getting to know the area and to her new
job at St Giles.
Janice Leaver (Desborough, Brampton
Ash, Dingley and Braybrooke) says her first congregation was
amongst the residents and staff of an NHS home for adults with learning
difficulties and challenging behaviour. She worked there for 13 years,
mostly on the night shift. Janice is married to Bob and they have two
children.
Paul Seaton-Burn (Broughton, Loddington,
Cransley and Thorpe Malsor) was, in his youth, Head Chorister
at St Nicholas Cathedral in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. To this day he is
a “long suffering” supporter
of Newcastle United FC! He and his wife Helen, with their four boys,
have lived near Wellingborough for some time and until recently Paul
commuted to work in the City of London.
Dr John Smith (St
Peter & St Paul, Kettering) is
a retired Consultant in palliative medicine. He has worked at the Cynthia
Spencer Hospice in Northampton and at the two general hospitals. In
1994 he opened the Cransley Hospice in Kettering. His conversion from
Roman Catholicism five years ago revived a life long calling to the
priesthood. He and his wife Ann have two grown up children.
Fiona Solman (Cottesmore, Barrow, Burley with
Ashwell) began her training for ordination on the same day
that her first grand-daughter was born! It was a fitting beginning
for someone who worked as a children's nurse and Health Visitor.
Fiona loves sewing and once won a competition to design and stitch
a decoration for the Queen's Christmas tree.
Church boat floats to victory
The
Pathfinder group (11-14 years) at St Giles Desborough had been preparing
their 16ft dinghy, Don't Panic , since
January.
Along with over 30 other church members they pushed it in Desborough's
Carnival Parade on 24 June. It so impressed the judges that they won
both the Class Prize and the overall Walking Entry prize.
What's more,
new people came to church the next day in response to the numerous Welcome
Aboard leaflets they had handed out at
the Carnival.
