The Rector’s Letter

Pause for Though from Parish Priest: Canon Margaret Venables
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford, Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET

I am writing this shortly after being in Barnack School for their end of year assembly and it struck me how much those in the village who do not see these assemblies are missing. Of course once your children or grandchildren have moved on so do you and other things take their place. However, this assembly did seem to be very special and I thought perhaps there would be those who would like to know more about our school.
Each year this assembly is charged with emotions – not only are the year 6 children leaving to go on to new schools but most children will also be moving to new classes and know that whatever, the next school year will feel very different. But this is the time to celebrate achievements and they did this with verve! If you read the newspapers about education it seems that academic results are all that matters – well, of course they matter and if you want to judge Barnack School by that yardstick then you need to look well above all national figures – they have performed exceptionally well. But that is not what this assembly is about – it is about all the other things that go to make children feel special. So there are certificates for those who managed to attend school every day of the school year, cycling proficiency certificates, swimming awards (and one boy had a certificate for overcoming his fear of water), certificates for those who help out with equipment at lunch times and help to clear the hall after lunch. All this was interspersed with musical interludes from children learning to play wind instruments and the only recorder group that I have ever listened to and not shuddered! Then there were the films! It was, perhaps, the youngest children who won the greatest applause for this with their animated rendering of Jack and the Beanstalk their clear voices telling the story while little matchstick characters moved across the screen, but it was the oldest class who had won the overall award at the Peterborough Film Awards (all Peterborough Schools were involved) not only in their age group but also the whole competition. Their film was called ‘Heroes’ and, not surprisingly, had something to do with chocolate – but also had a more serious message. I won’t spoil it for you, because later in the year you will be able to watch it for yourself on the school website. The assembly ended with the school singing at the tops of their voices, ‘One more step along the road I go’ and everyone went out feeling immensely proud of ‘their school’. It certainly made my day.
So do watch out for the things that Barnack School is doing and if you can get involved. As a Church of England School there are services in church usually twice a term and anyone is welcome to come and enjoy the children singing and reading – and there are often events in school . But do just talk to the children and they will tell you what a happy and interesting time they have. Mr Krzanicki and all the staff are to be congratulated on all that is being achieved.
We have a gem of a school in our midst – lets celebrate it!

Margaret

DO YOU KNOW?... Baptisms and Thanksgiving Services for a child
Many parents today are not sure about christenings and they often feel that if they do not go to church, then it would be wrong to have their child christened or Baptised. Of course that is not the attitude of the church and any parent living in our parishes has the right to have their child Baptised – and I would never refuse to Baptise a child. However, some parents are not sure this is right for their child, but feel that they want to acknowledge the joy they feel at the birth of a new baby and the Register Office does offer a secular service. But if something is wanted in the village then we can offer a Service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child. The birth or adoption of a child is a cause for celebration and many people are overcome by a sense of awe at the creation of a new life and want to express their thanks to God. This service provides an opportunity for parents and families to give thanks for the birth or adoption of a child and to pray for family life. It may be a private celebration at home or in hospital, or it may be public celebration in church. If you are wanting to explore this further, do, please, phone me and I will talk to you some more about it. Margaret 740234

Brain Tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and young people and all money raised goes towards funding the support and rehabilitation of children and young people in this region.

Buttercross Club
John Broadhead accompanied by his knowledgeable daughter Mel gave us a ‘Gardeners Question Time’ evening this month. John who runs Helpston Garden Centre was an excellent fount of information solving an array of members’ gardening problems. His initial advice was very topical, in view of the hot dry weather we have been experiencing, ‘prepare garden plans to suit a changing climate!’ I hope our gardens thrive and will show how we have followed his guidance as the summer progresses.
On Wednesday 6th August at 6.30pm we will be holding our annual Family Boules evening in the gardens of Bainton House. Do come along and join in the fun. RY

Thank You Very Much
to everyone who kindly donated buttons and other bits and bobs to me. I had a very generous response. Everything was very much appreciated.

Thank you from Sidney Tuck
A great big thank you to Canon Margaret, the PC, Childrens Church and the Congregation of St John the Baptist Church for the wonderful card and comments on my retirement from my duties in the Church.
I am sorry that I did not thank everyone personally but I was rather overcome with the occasion. I was sorry to give up my duties which I have enjoyed and I had hoped to carry on for a few more years but some of my inner works have closed down and Old Father Time tells me that if I don’t I will not get my letter from the Queen. Thanks again everyone, see you in Church. Sidney Tuck

Our July Cake Stall was again well supprted and over £130 was raised for our Chapel Funds. Do come and join us at the next one if you can which will be on Saturday, 1 August at the usual time of 10 to 11 am. We will also be having a stall at the village Horticultural Show when we hope to have some of this season’s new jams and chutneys.
We are looking for some assistance in providing the music for the hymns for our services. Ideally, we would be very grateful if someone would come forward to play for us once a month on a date which would suit them. We are looking for a pianist not an organist and the hymns would be provided by the beginning of the week so that there would be sufficient time to practise them.
If you are able to help us in this way, please get in touch with either me, Jill Unsworth (740456) or Margaret Durdey (740459)

Barnack Bowls Club
The winners of the June draw were:
No 47 Dorothy Huckerby £50
No 62 Ken MacKellar £25
No 76 Bill Coleman £15
No 10 John Innes £10
And for July:
No 39 Maggie Carter £25
No 37 Jill Unsworth £15
No 6 Derek Alexander £10
Twenty teams entered our Gala Day on Sunday 7 June and unfortunately they were not lucky with the weather this year. Nevertheless the standard of bowling was high and the final was a tight contest only settled by the number of ends won. Congratulations to the winning team of Alan Rice, Margaret Andrews, Eric Pridmore and Bryan Leverett.
Our Annual Lunch at the home of our Chairman, Phil Collins, was blessed with better weather and over 40 members enjoyed a very good meal kindly provided by the Chairman’s wife and helpers. This event is always a highlight of the Club calendar and we are much indebted to Phil and Adrienne for their hospitality.

Barnack W.I.
We were delighted to welcome to our July meeting Mrs. Pat Brooks, who is the President of our Federation, Huntingdon and Peterborough. Mrs. Brooks enjoyed the evening and commented favourably on the range of activity in which we engage. We have presented cards to three members who are celebrating Golden Wedding Anniversaries this year, June Graham last month, Jill Unsworth and Judith Browne this month. 1959 was obviously a vintage year! Details of forthcoming outings to Ely, Denman College, and Melton Mowbray, (to make pork pies!), were given, together with dates for the next luncheon club, and the long and short walks. We shall be serving teas at the forthcoming Horticultural Show, and offers of help, and cakes, will be welcome. This month we learned something about the drug problem locally and nationally. DCI Gary Goose and Mrs. Shelley Ward from the Drug Strategic Team of the Cambridgeshire Constabulary gave an informative, and at times disturbing presentation on their work. They emphasised the importance of trying to discover why people become addicts and to address these causes, rather than just apply “sticking plaster” to the effects, In this context the Drug Intervention Programme was important. They acknowledged however that those who broke society’s rules had to answer for their crimes. Their talk elicited many questions and comments after which they were thanked by Mrs. June Graham. We do not meet in August, so the next meeting is on September 8th when Mrs. Berrill will tell us about the Norman Cross Prisoner of War Camp. Elizabeth Young

Bainton and Ashton Family Day
Once again, Bainton and Ashton Family Day was exceptional. Apart from 10 minutes of downpour, the weather was superb, the stalls were fantastic with many bargains, the games were again great fun, and the teas, the raffle, the games were all up to their usual high standard. The Auction of Promises was once again very popular and really boosted total profits which ended up at just over £1900. This was a really good result, as although last year was financially better it was a special occasion- compared to ‘normal years’ it was the best yet! We were entertained by the Youth Brass Band with two sessions which were of a very high standard. Two new events this year were the childrens corner offering a medley of chilodrens activities, and a boat-building contest with all entries taking part in a race across the swimming pool! Many, many thanks to all stall-holders, all competitors and all supporters who combined so well to make the day one to remember. Thanks also to the Birkbeck family who gave their time and their premises so genorously.

3. Residents are respectfully reminded to cut back any plants which are growing over footways and roads and causing inconvenience to passers-by.
