Family Services: A Family Service is held in St John’s Barnack on every 3rd Sunday. This service is specially for families and their children and is not a communion service.

Bainton Buttercross Club – June Meeting
This months meeting was a ‘Bridge Evening’ led by Tony Ross. Tony has been playing bridge for 30 years. He also teaches bridge and performs the role of Director at bridge tournaments. We started with a quick Q&A session then quickly moved to playing the hands. Tony soon had even the most inexperienced members enjoying playing ‘mini bridge’.
Our next outing is a theatre trip to the Shoestring production of ‘On the Razzle’ on June 23rd. We will meet at the Reading Room at 7 pm. July’s meeting on Wednesday July 7th will be a trip to Easton Walled Garden We will meet at the Reading Room at 5.50 pm and need to leave promptly at 6 pm. The tour of the garden will be at 6.45 pm. The cost is £11.75 which includes the tour plus tea/coffee and cake. Please note comfortable walking shoes are recommended!
The Bainton Buttercross Boules Tournament will take place on August 4th at Bainton House. Ro thanked everyone for making cakes and helping at the Edwardian Tea, which was part of the Bainton Literary Festival. The Buttercross Ladies will, as usual, be providing cakes and produce for the stall at the Bainton Family Day on Sunday July 4th. MC
Barnack Memories of World War 2.
Inspired by the recent 70th anniversary of the evacuation of Dunkirk, several members of Barnack W.I, are getting together to produce individual memories of this period., with the hope that a written record can eventually be published. British Red Cross week

“Quiet Lanes, Ashton”
Just a reminder to all who use the roads through Ashton that it is an officially designated “Quiet Lanes” area. Quiet Lanes are designed to allow the road to be used safely by all groups including walkers, horse riders, cyclists and car drivers and give equal rights to ALL road users.
With summer now with us and the school holidays approaching you are likely to meet many people out enjoying their leisure. Please be aware there is only a single track road through the village and if you are driving a car PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY for everyone’s sake.

A Message from Barnack School: Goodbye to Mrs Doran.
At the end of this term we will be saying goodbye to Mrs Doran. Diana has been a teacher at Barnack School for 19 years during which time many generations of children have passed through her care. To mark the occasion we will be holding a special Open Afternoon on Tuesday 20th July which will end with a Presentation Assembly at about 2.45pm. Bainton “Pub” Eve - Holiday Break
Please note that there will be no social evenings on the second Friday of each month during July, August and September due to holidays and other village events. We will, however, be resuming on Friday 8th October and every second Friday in the month thereafter.

Barnack Pre-School
Barnack Pre-School now has a website www.barnackpreschool.btik.com where you can find out more about the great things the Pre-School has to offer.
Registrations are being taken for the coming academic year in September. If you have a child aged 2 ½ to 4 years (or who will turn 2 ½ in the coming year or beyond) contact our bookings secretary Val Haines-Eynon on 740017.
You would be very welcome to come and visit the Pre-School with your child to experience how the children spend their morning and meet the teaching staff. Children aged three and four receive full funding for fifteen hours each week. The Pre-School is open in term time, Monday to Friday from 9am to 12 noon and is situated in a lovely garden in the school grounds.
Appeal for Second Hand Clothing
Barnack Pre-School is collecting for ‘Bags2School’ in an effort to raise funds. If you can donate any second hand but usable clothes, paired shoes, handbags, belts, bedding, curtains and soft toys we would be very grateful indeed. You can drop off donations (in bin bags please) at the Pre-School between 9am and 12 noon between Monday 5th and Wednesday 7th July or we can arrange to collect them. Please call Sophie on 740 010.
Barnack Methodist Chapel
Our June Coffee Morning and Cake Stall on Saturday, 5 June raised the sum of £118.40 and we thank you warmly for your support. Our July Coffee Morning will be held on Saturday 3 July at the usual time of 10 am to 11 am and we look forward to seeing you then.
Auction of Promises at Bainton Family Day - July 4th
We shall be having a written Auction of Promises and Goods at Family Day again this year. Afternoon Tea Party in aid of EACH
Ruth and Ann invite you to Afternoon Tea at 6 Canon Drive, Barnack on Saturday 17 July between 2.30 and 5.30 pm £5.00 per person. East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices give care and support to life-threatened children and their families. The event will celebrate 21 years since the foundation of the Milton Hospice and we hope to raise a significant sum to mark this milestone. Forget the waistline, ladies and gentlemen, for one day!

Barnack Baptist Church
Following a series of consultative meetings, Barnack Baptist Church is delighted to announce that Graham Dunn has been formally invited to be the full time Minister when he completes his training in June 2011. Until this time Graham will be continue to be Minister on a part-time / training basis.
This appointment will complete Graham’s formal 3 year training/formation programme which he has been doing on a 50:50 basis with 3 days each week studying at Oxford University, and 3 days each week working as the Minister within Barnack Baptist Church. Graham is looking forward to focussing more of his energies within the church and the local community when he completes his training next year. Graham will continue to be encouraged by the church to develop his mission work in Uganda, he leaves for Uganda on Sunday 27th June for three and a half weeks during which time he will be leading a series of business training conferences in the northern part of the country. He will also be visiting a the small village church on the border of Uganda and Congo which is being partnered by Barnack Baptist Church.
On Saturday 12 June Barnack Baptist Church enjoyed their Annual All-Age Sunday School Trip to Hunstanton. The weather remained fine and everyone enjoyed a great day, chilling out, building a huge sandcastle, swimming and generally enjoying themselves. We finished the day with fish and chips returning home just in time to watch England play USA in the world cup.
On Sunday 25 July we will be starting our Summer programme. For 6 weeks we shall be meeting in the Village Hall at 9-30 am for a series of all-age cafe style services. These services are very informal starting with breakfast followed by a family service. We move back to the School Hall on Sun 05 Sept.
Youth Club
Youth Club will be meeting in the village Hall at 7-30 pm on Friday 25 June, 9th July and 23rd July. Youth Club will not be held during August but will start again on Friday 3rd September when we look forward to welcoming new members who will have just started secondary school for the first time.
Little Lambs Toddler Group
Little Lambs meets each Tuesday morning from 10-00 to 12-00 in Barnack Village Hall, carers and their children are all welcome. We have lots of toys, games and books and activities for the children. Home- made cakes and proper coffee (for the adults!) is served with something healthier for the children. We have a bible story time and then lots of fun as we clear the hall of toys and the older children whizz around on tiny trikes. It is a great opportunity for carers to meet and chat and for the children to begin to explore the joys and challenges of mixing with others. Little Lambs is great fun for everyone, all are welcome. Little Lambs is run by Barnack Baptist Church.

Barnack School Association Quiz Night
Saturday 10th of July is the date for the School quiz night. It will be in the school hall starting at 7.30. Tickets are £5 per person. Bring your own drinks and nibbles. Teams of 8. Barnack Cricket Club - Youth in Credit at the Bank!
Thanks to the youths of Barnack and the generous support of The Peterborough Youth Bank, Barnack Cricket Club has a new cricket cage and a new table tennis table.
Tom Trevarthen (17), who is a member of the Barnack Pavilion Fund Raising Committee, came up with the idea, and with the support of Jamie Hankins, Henry and Greg Dunn, completed the successful application.
The Peterborough Youth Bank is an innovative grant making initiative run by young people for young people and provides small grants to fund ideas to benefit communities.
The cricket cage was purchased from a local company, Durant Cricket, and has already had significant use by many youngsters. The table tennis table provides a new facility at the club and is in regular use.
Fund raising for the new pavilion is going well with in excess of £25,000 raised in the last year. In addition, coaching for under 8’s at Barnack Cricket Club on Friday evenings until 2nd July has been extremely popular and has been thoroughly enjoyed by the children and their parents alike.
We look forward to the future at the Club and we are doing our best to lay solid foundations, to build on them going forward and we thank all those, youngsters and adults alike, helping us to achieve that. William Armitage, Barnack Cricket Club
Not Just Coffee
Everything Thursday morning throughout July in Barnack Village Hall from 10.30 to 12noon.
It’s not just a coffee morning but a weekly time to meet for friendship and lots of chat, usually we also play board games or have a go at various craft activities, and for anyone feeling energetic we can set up table tennis, Wii Sports and even a dance mat! All activities are optional, just come in whenever you like and stay for as long as you like. Real filter coffee, tea and home-made cakes are served about 11.15am. All for £1 a week.
If its a lovely summer morning and you’re out for a walk, why not call in for a cup of coffee. Not Just Coffee is organized by Barnack Baptist Church. A warm, friendly welcome for everyone. Castor Hanglands
Have you explored the new way into Castor Hanglands from Southey Woods? Take the track opposite the car park for a short distance, follow the first drain on the left and walk through gate on your right. It is all waymarked and signposted. You will enter into a different, unspoiled countryside.

Blackbird, Blackcap, Blue Tit, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Common Whitethroat, Cuckoo, Dunnock, Garden Warbler, Green Woodpecker, Nightingale, Robin, Rook, Song Thrush, Stock Dove, Swift, Turtle Dove, Willow Warbler, Wren, Yellowhammer.
The wild orchids in the wetland area are at their best now so don’t delay.
Ufford Park Cricket Club -
to-date the Hunts XI and Rutland League 1st XI have made a good start to the season with both teams in second place Unfortunately, the Rutland League 2nd XI have only won two of their league games. The Junior Section continues to go from strength to strength with U17, U15, U13,
U11 and U 9 teams playing in their respective leagues. Ufford Parish Council recently presented the Junior Section with a Portable Scoreboard.
The Draw for the ‘100’ Club took place at the White Hart.
Darby and Joan Club
At their recent meeting Members enjoyed a Tea Afternoon supplied and served by the Committee.
The Club would always welcome new Members at their fortnightly meetings held at the Acres.
PARISH COUNCIL
Southorpe Parish Council
The AGM and Annual meeting of the Southorpe Parish Council took place on Monday 17 May following a Parish Council meeting. All Councillors, the Clerk and one members of the public were present.
Mrs Sue Joy had kindly volunteered to stand as a Parish Councillor and was co-opted during the Parish Council meeting.
The Chairman, Nick Lodge, gave a report on the year. The year had been relatively quiet with fewer planning applications than in recent years, the one topic that had kept the council busy this year was the continuing issue of cars speeding in the villages. Having had several speed surveys, it was now clear that the main area of concern was the southern end of the village; this has been acknowledged by PCC. After numerous discussions with the Road and Traffic Department in Peterborough it has finally been agreed to reinstate the red 30mph bands at the ends of the village and also to look into installing warning rumble strips, both these measures should reinforce to drivers that they are entering a 30 mph zone. With regard to the future consideration of vehicle activated signs, PCC were shortly to commence on drafting a policy on their future use as to where they were likely to achieve a positive outcome. Any consideration of such signs for Southorpe would be considered by PCC in line with that policy.
A further £500 had been received from PCC’s Community Fund for environmental projects; Councillors had in the latter half of the year pursued the possibility of funding a pond in the village, this was still being discussed.
Helene Carr had to resign as a Councillor during the year due to work pressures and the Chairman took the opportunity to thank her for all her hard work. He also thanked his fellow councillors for their hard work and commitment and the Clerk for keeping the council running smoothly.
The Entertainments Secretary gave a report; the bonfire party had been a great success again. The Financial Officer presented the financial statement for the year.
A resident raised the issue of fly tipping around the village, the Chairman agreed that there did now seem to be more general littering and fly tipping; he noted that the problem may continue to increase as he understood that Peterborough City Council were no longer providing a free collection for bulk household rubbish. Any incidents noted would be reported to the Fix-it-Van team.
The next meeting is Mon 13 Sept at 7.30 pm at Rosemead. All residents are welcome.
Report on Ufford Parish Council meetings on 8.6.10 and 18.6 10
1. Dog Mess Further complaints have been received about this problem and Ufford was described, by one resident, as the worst village in the district for dog mess. Dog owners are again reminded that it is their responsibility to clean up after their dogs. It is an offence to allow dogs to foul village verges, footways and roads. There are reminders all over the village that the City Council will not hesitate to fine offenders. Dog mess carries a health risk especially to children, it looks unsightly and none of like to walk in it, so dog owners are also asked to remove it from rural footpaths as well. Whenever and wherever you are out with your dog, remember to put a plastic bag in your pocket. The rule is BAG IT AND BIN IT.
2. Village Walls Our hopes were raised last year when we were invited to take part in a programme for training young unemployed people in rural skills, stone wall building in particular. We identified the walls on Walcot Road and Bainton Road but unfortunately the young people have been trained, the stone from the walls in question have been used in the village but out of public view, and our roadside walls have been left in a worse condition than they were before. We are informed that there will probably be another similar scheme next year!
3. Barnack Ward Fund £500 has again been transferred into the UPC bank account for us to plant more trees, hedges and bulbs in 2010-11. Let us know if you have any suggestions.
4. Speed activated lights A contribution of £4000 towards the cost of lights has been agreed with the Barnack Ward fund and UPC hopes to carry this proposal forward.
5. The next meeting is Tuesday July 13th at 7.30 at Ufford village Hall. All welcome.
Barnack Parish Council
Barnack Parish Council met on Mon 14 June when Mr Simon Machin, head of Planning at Peterborough C C was the guest speaker.
Mr Machen explained his role within the City Council and the many changes that have taken place to re-structure the planning department. Mr Machen explained the brown field land issues, which will take approximately 2 years to fully implement, with new policies having to be written. He confirmed that Parish Councils do not have any weight with the planning department, but their views are important. A conservation team will be creating a Supplementary Planning Document, and will use the Village Design Statements as one of the documents to create it. The Community Leadership Report was presented. Stan Pywell from the Welland Drainage Board has been consulted to discuss the ditches for which they were responsible, so that these could become environmental areas providing a rich habitat for wildlife. Bee Hotels are available and would be on display at Barnack Church Fete, the Bainton Family Day and the Horticultural Show. A minimum donation of £3 would be requested. Peter Tebb has reaffirmed that the B1443 Weight Limit would become a permanent..Andy Totten from Bainton would be asked to contact all the volunteers in every village to allocate a week per village in turn for the Speed Watch board. David Over reported that each of the five villages in his ward should have received an application form from the treasurer’s department for a £500 environmental grant for 2010/11 from the Community Leadership budget. Projects for 2010/11 included speed signs for Ufford, Helpston, Southorpe and Barnack. A suggestion was made to rename the group, which could become the Barnack Ward Group. This will discussed at the next meeting. The next meeting of the Community Leadership Group would be held at 7.00 pm on Thursday 22 July at The Old Mill House, Barnack when the agenda would include: Renaming of the Community Leadership Group to the Barnack Ward Group, Conservation Aims and Objectives and Finger post signs.
PC McCallum then reported that the Chief Constable, Julie Spence will be leave in September 2010 and will be replaced by Simon Parr. Inspector Glazebrook has been relocated to Bridge Street, and Inspector Louise Angel has commenced at Bretton. The streetlight outside 2 Kingsley Close will be reported for repair. Trees overhanging on the corner of Bishops Walk and Canon Drive and in the Rectory garden overhanging the footpath and an overhanging rose bush on Main Street with be addressed by highways. The meeting was closed so that the parish council could discuss informally the progress of work on the Airey House site. Next meeting of Barnack Parish Council will be at 7.30 pm Mon 12 July..
