During the interregnum, the Rector's Letter will feature letters
and articles from a number of contributors. This month, The Venerable
David Painter, Archdeacon of Oakham, has kindly submitted the following
letter:
As I write this, in the middle of November, the shops
are full of Christmas goods and decorations, and in Queensgate and in
Cathedral Square in Peterborough some admittedly rather tinny versions
of Christmas carols can be heard every day as background music. Every
year we complain that ‘Christmas starts earlier and earlier’, and we
blame what seems to be the remorseless pressure of commercialism for
bringing us, by Christmas Day itself, to a state of exhaustion, and
a feeling that we have by then had enough of the whole thing, so that
it’s a relief to forget about it for another year.
Why is it that a festival which has so much to do with human warmth
and love, with the bringing together of friends and families, with the
sharing of gifts and pleasure, has become for many people something
of an endurance test year by year? It is a well known fact that Christmas
is a time of stress for large numbers of people and families, while
for others loneliness and a sense of being on the margins of society
(hard enough to bear at the best of times) become well nigh intolerable.
So what is the secret of a truly happy Christmas? It is, surely, nothing
less than a living relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, and a willingness
to accept him into our lives as our true Friend and Saviour. This means
making space – deliberately and consciously setting aside time to reflect
on the wonder of God’s love, a love so deep that he was prepared to
risk all by being born and by being a baby. For a baby is, at the start
of his or her life, utterly helpless and vulnerable, needing to be fed,
needing to be washed, needing to be clothed and kept warm. We are so
used to thinking of God as almighty and all-powerful that we find it
almost impossible to believe that he could ever be weak and needy. But
that is exactly what God became in Christ, and this was no mere temporary
experience, as if the Word became flesh just for a while, to try it
out and see what it was like. God’s humanity in Christ is absolute and
permanent, and day by day he is especially close to those who are conscious
of their own frailty and emptiness. In one of his most famous pieces
of teaching Jesus said: ‘Blessed are those who know their need of God’,
and it is only by being honest about our need, and by facing our fears
and hopes realistically, that we can ever know true happiness, at Christmas
or at any other time.
As many of you know, I have visited Barnack a number of times in recent
months, and have tried to face with you your own needs as far as the
seeking of a new parish priest is concerned, while at the same time
being truthful with you about the real difficulty in which the Church
at large finds itself in the light of the current shortage of priests.
Thankfully there is light at the end of the tunnel, and I was greatly
encouraged by the response of a recent joint meeting of the PCCs of
Barnack, Bainton and Ufford, as a result of which I hope that very shortly
we shall be able to move towards the appointment of a new priest and
pastor for you all. Meanwhile I very much look forward to being with
you for the celebration of Midnight Communion at Barnack on Christmas
Eve, and I wish every single one of you Christ’s peace and happiness
at this holy season.

Outcome of Joint PCC Meeting
At a joint meeting on 23rd October, PCC members from Barnack, Bainton
& Ufford took a vote that, in principle, the three parishes should
be served by one priest, who would also serve the adjoining parishes
of Helpston, Maxey and Etton. This was carried by 17 votes to 9, with
no abstentions.
Good News Van
This will not be visiting Barnack in December. The next visit will be

New section for the Parish News: Announcements
It has been suggested that readers might appreciate an announcement
section in the Parish News, to inform fellow villagers of births,
marriages and deaths etc.
Anyone who would like to send a brief obituary for a loved one, who
has lived in these Parishes, or a birth or marriage announcement,
should email their contribution to the Editor by the copy deadline.
Contributions should be a maximum of 300 words. (It might be necessary
for me to edit contributions, should space be in short supply.) Lisa
Chadwick
Replacements for the Rector’s letter
During the interregnum there will be no regular contributor for page
two of the parish news, where Father Glyn’s letter appeared.
Arrangements have been made for contributions up to Christmas.
All members of the various churches within the Parish are warmly invited
to contribute an occasional letter to appear in this space.
Villagers are also invited to submit articles of general interest
to fill this page. Contributions should be a approximately 600 words
long.
Please email them to me at lisa chadsonline.co.uk
(Please note: it may be necessary to edit contributions and each will
appear at the Editor’s discretion.) Lisa Chadwick
Barnack Baptist Church
Barnack Baptist Church extends a warm welcome to our Christmas services
and events. Christmas celebrations begin with carol singing around
Barnack during the evening of Thursday 11th December. On Sunday the14th
we will have an Advent Carol Service, with Sunday School for the children.
On the following Sunday the 21st, the All Age Carol Service will include
songs sung by the children and a dramatised retelling of the Christmas
Story from Mary’s viewpoint. Then on Christmas Day we’ll get together
to celebrate Jesus’ Birthday. We’ll sing some favourite carols (poll
taken at the door!) and children (and grown-ups!) can bring along
a Christmas present to show. The service will last for just half an
hour, so no need to worry about your Christmas dinner.
All the services are in Barnack Village Hall and start at 10.30am
and as usual are listed on the inside front cover of this magazine.
Please note that there is not a service at Barnack on Sunday 28th
Dec.
Christmas Charity Concert
Following the huge success of last year’s Christmas Charity Concert,
Barnack Baptist Church is organising another concert for Tuesday the
23rd December at 8pm in Barnack Village Hall. The programme will include
a wide variety of seasonal music and songs with singers from Barnack,
the Copeland Ceilidh Band, the BBC Singers and solo musicians. Seasonal
refreshments will be served during the interval.
Tickets priced at £3 per person will be available from Barnack
Post Office from the 8th December. All proceeds from the sale of the
tickets will go to the Leprosy Mission.
Marie Curie Coffee Morning
Very many thanks to all those who came and contributed so generously
to the Coffee Morning held at Abbot’s Barn recently to raise funds
for the Nurses working for Marie Curie Cancer Care in the area. They
providehigh quality nursing, totally free, to give terminally people
the choice of dying at home supported by their families. We raised
£438, which was really an excellent sum, for this worthy cause.
Janet Thain
Barnack Hills and Holes National Nature Reserve
As we have not produced a newsletter this year, I have written a few
notes to provide a brief update.
Sheep get worried
This year we had a serious sheep worrying incident when an Alsatian
was let loose amongst the sheep and two of them were injured. Incidents
like this cause considerable stress to the animals and make them very
nervous of dogs, and for a time this meant the paddock had to be closed
to all dogs. We apologise for any inconvenience and thanks to those
people who reported the incident.
Waiting for a sign….
The stone plinths, which were installed in April, are still awaiting
their brand new signs. The extended delay has been caused by this
being part of a National contract in which all of England’s National
Nature Reserves are having new entrance signs. We have now seen and
approved the final drafts for the signs so they should be with us
very soon.
Restoration Area
Sheep have continued to graze this area through the summer to help
to suppress weeds, and some have also been controlled by pulling and
mowing. Areas which were seeded last winter with flower and grass
seed collected from elsewhere on the reserve, are showing promising
early signs of recovery.
Plan in the can
The management plan for the Hills and Holes has recently been updated
as part of a regular 5-year review. The plan identifies the important
features of the reserve and describes what needs to be done to maintain
them.
If anyone would like to see a copy, please call me on 01780 752796.

Ufford
Millennium Fund
Five years ago a committee was formed to co-ordinate events to be arranged
in the village to mark the Millennium. From the start we agreed to raise
money for one or more permanent structures and for our village charities,
Ufford Church and Village Hall, as well as organising various social
and fun events.
These have included an Art and Craft Weekend in 1998, a Village Fete
in 1999, a Fun Day in 2001 and Open Garden Weekends in 2000 and 2002
as well as Wheelbarrow Races in 1999 and 2000. We also had a Village
Photograph and a Village Walk and, to launch our Ufford Heritage book,
we had a Promises Auction in 1999. There was a Village Party to see
in the Millennium and a Children’ s Party the following Christmas at
which every child received an Ufford Millennium Mug.We raised a total
of £2346.98 for Ufford Church and the same amount for the Village
Hall as well as £100 for the Macmillan Nurses.
Now that our two permanent structures, the Millennium Stone and the
refurbished church gates, are in place and paid for, the time has come
to wind up the fund. The accounts of all the main events have already
been displayed outside the Village Hall over the years and the final
accounts are displayed there.
The balance of £39.24 has been shared between Ufford Church and
Ufford Village Hall. However, this does not have to be the end of all
our social events in the village. Are there any ideas for 2004? Frieda
Gosling
Ufford Ladies
Chris Harrison-Smith gave us an entertaining evening of rural nostalgia
last month. We have arranged an extra meeting in December to which all
our members and friends from Ufford and nearby villages are invited.
Details below.
Carols Round The
Tree
Everyone is invited to Ufford Village Hall on Thursday, December 18th
at 7.15pm for an evening of traditional carols and seasonal readings.
Admission, including refreshments: adults £1, children free. Raffle
of seasonal goodies.
Ufford Park Cricket Club
The Cricket Club held their Presentation Evening at the White Hart.
Mr John Mason presented the following awards:

– Carl Manton; Fielding - Ashley Wheal; Club Batsman Award – Andy Larkin;
Bowling – Terry Rawlings; Clubman of the Year – Eric King
An auction, including a painting kindly donated by Will Thompson, raised
over £500 for Club Funds. The Club has a major project to undertake
before the commencement of the 2004 Season, and several fundraising
events will be taking place.
Ufford Parish Council Meeting, November
12th 2003
Two issues have caused major concern in the past month. The first was
the Old Rectory planning application to erect a fence and hedge alongside
the church path, thus obstructing the most important view in Ufford.
This was opposed by the parish council. The second was the chaos caused
by car parking on bonfire night. A letter has been sent to the White
Hart.
Due to illness of the City Council representative there is no progress
to report on any of the outstanding highways issues. Thanks to the intervention
of David Over, our City Councillor, the overhanging trees outside the
Old Rectory will soon be cut back and the street light repaired.
The parish council did not object to the planning application for alterations
at High Trees. It did object to the request to change the permission
already granted to Field End to erect a hedge instead of a high wooden
fence at the back of Orchard House. Complaints have been received about
the absence of progress at the barns north of Compass Cottage. At the
public meeting on Feb 12th 2002, Ken Blacklock said that he was waiting
for windows, which had been on order for 12 months; also for high gates
to hide the site from the road. A letter has been sent to the Planning
Department to ask them to take steps to protect this listed building.
It was decided that the parish council should have an option to meet
on the second Wednesday of alternate months to discuss planning applications
and any matters arising, starting on December 10th. The next regular
meeting will be on Wednesday, January 14th. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Friends of Barnack Church
With the magazine this month comes an information leaflet and application
form for the Friends of Barnack Church, so offering me an opportunity
to say something about the ‘Friends’ in the hope of encouraging more
local people to join us. In his splendid book, ‘England’s Thousand Best
Churches’, Simon Jenkins writes, ‘Most Saxon churches are celebrated
more for being old than for being beautiful..... not so Barnack. Its
Saxon tower and Early Gothic spire form the most pleasing composition
in the county’, and he numbers Barnack in his top 100. Knowing that
in its church, Barnack possessed a national treasure a number of us,
some 18 years ago, sought to extend the care of this wonderful building
beyond the worshipping congregation, and with the blessing of the then
Rector, Canon Charles Mayhew, and with the support of several distinguished
patrons, the Friends of Barnack Church was born. Our remit is to stimulate
interest in the church and to help the work of preserving its beauty.
To this end we have contributed more than £20,000 to various projects.
We have provided the floodlighting and a necessary lightning conductor,
contributed to several repairs including the cleaning of the painted
chancel ceiling, and most recently have borne the entire cost, £14,000,
of restoring the Salviati mosaic reredos, our millennium project. We
have also helped to produce the excellent guide book. We publish an
annual newsletter, organise occasional lectures and visits to places
of interest, and we run a 200 Club. If you are not already a ‘Friend’
please consider becoming one, and thereby help to continue the work
of 1000 years of caring for this wonderful building.
Elizabeth Young, Chairman, Friends of Barnack Church.
Barnack Methodist Chapel
Our Coffee Morning and Cake Stall on Saturday, 4th November raised £120.77,
including a donation of £5. Many thanks to those who came. We

afternoon will take place on Thursday, 11th December from 2.30 until
3.45 pm when home-made Christmas puddings and mincemeat plus small gifts
will also be on sale. Do come and join us if you can.
You are also cordially invited to our Carol Service which will be held
on Sunday, 21st December at 2.30 pm and will be followed by coffee/tea
and mince pies.
Thank you for all your support during the past year – you have helped
us to raise over £1000 which has gone halfway to paying for the
repairs to the roof and replacing the guttering. We wish you all a happy
Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous new year.

will affect the over 60’s.
After the general business of the evening. Ms. L. Grey told us about
her work with ‘SENSE’.
We even learnt how to talk all over again just using our hands.

Barnack Parish Council Meeting
This month’s meeting was held on November 11th in the Wilfrid Wood Hall.
The chairman informed the meeting of the outcome of the Peterborough
City Council Consultation meeting and the Planning Services meeting,
both of which she had attended. The Vehicle Activated Signs should be
in place in the village by the end of January and the lorry restriction
signs for the B1443 have now been installed. No response had yet been
received to the council’s request for a mobile speed camera.
Peterborough City Council is promoting the community alarm service ‘Lifeline’
The clerk has details if anyone would like further information.
Planning applications had been received for a single storey extension
at Jasmine Cottage, School Road and also for a barn conversion at The
Old Nursery, Pilsgate. Concern was expressed at the removal of old fruit
trees and hawthorn hedge at Laburnum Cottage, The Drift.
Mrs. Woollard also outlined the Quality Status initiative for Parish
Councils. Parish councils have the choice as to whether they wish to
gain this status. A discussion about the merits of this initiative followed
and no decision is to be taken until next year.
Meeting dates were set for 2004 - all meetings to continue to be held
on the second Monday of the month except in August and December.
The Village Information Booklet is being updated and will shortly be
delivered to every door.
A leaf sweep of the village was requested. Parishioners are asked not
to sweep their leaves onto the pavements and into the gutters as this
proves to be dangerous to pedestrians and traffic.
The full minutes of this meeting are displayed on the village notice
boards and on the Parish Council Web Site at www.barnackparishcouncil.org.
