Ufford Hedge Planting Grant
Clusters of bright red hips and haws, dark glossy blackberries and sloes, trailing streams of old man`s beard, these are some of the autumn delights of an English hedgerow. And in spring, the first white flowers of the blackthorn, followed by the may blossom, wild roses and honeysuckle. Hedges provide a larder for wildlife as well as shelter, route ways and nesting sites. They prevent chemical sprays from drifting on to the verges, act as windbreaks and increase security for farmers.
In the past farmers were encouraged by government grants and subsidies to grub up hedges in order to maximise grain production. Much of eastern England was left looking like the prairies of Canada.
Ufford Parish Council has been given a grant of £1600 for hedge planting on Marholm Road east of the village by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Biodiversity Partnership. A key part of the partnership`s work is to increase the variety of wildlife and habitats such as woodlands, grasslands and wetlands and to create and improve the management of linkages between them, such as conservation strips, hedges and roadside verges.
The Marholm Road verges and hedgerows are an important habitat in their own right and as such are designated as a County Wildlife Site. There are five local farmers involved with the project are and all are enthusiastic about the hedge planting proposals. Village residents are being kept informed and everyone who drives down the road to Peterborough will benefit. A village walk will be organised in the winter after planting is complete.

November meeting of Barnack WI
Christmas arrived in Barnack village hall on November 11th!
The Hall was packed with Barnack WI members, their guests and visitors who had all come to see the star attraction – Sheila Bratley – who with her able assistant, Marjory Coupes, gave a brilliant demonstration of preparing Christmas floral decorations. These very talented ladies prepared both traditional and modern decorations in front of our very eyes, accompanied by a highly entertaining commentary. The finished products were then generously donated to the raffle and the fortunate winners were delighted to be going home with such splendid prizes.
During the business part of the evening, June Graham put out a plea for members to kindly contribute to the continuing success of Barnack WI by volunteering to join the committee. Sheila Berrill thanked Adrienne Collins for running the very popular luncheon club throughout the year. Members were asked to let the committee know if they will be attending the Christmas Social Evening on Tuesday 9th December as this will assist with quantities for catering.

Dear Residents,
Are you interested in reducing speeding through your villages? Are you interested in making the roads safer for all to use?
You could become a trained volunteer on you local Neighbourhood Speed Watch Scheme.
The project was trialled in the Southern Division of Cambridgeshire and is now being rolled out Forcewide.
It is ran by volunteers and fully supported by your Rural Neighbourhood Panel and by your Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Once you have been trained by the Police on the safe operation of the device and the relevant Health & Safety aspects, you will be able to use the roadside equipment in your local community to start impacting on any speed issues.
The equipment comprises of a LCD board on a tripod, which is set up facing traffic. The board will display the speed of speeding traffic and the registration number is recorded by the volunteers at the roadside. These details are passed onto the police who will write to the offenders. If there are persistent offenders and speed problems revealed, then the local Neighbourhood Policing Team will come out with their speed gun to prosecute offenders, with a zero tolerance policy.

Would you like to join the Street Leader Scheme!
The Street Leader Scheme has been running as a pilot in 5 areas of Peterborough Since July of this year, due to its success we are now looking to recruit volunteers in other areas of Peterborough.
The Street Leader Scheme is designed to support people who are concerned about their local environment and want to work in partnership with Peterborough City Council to make noticeable improvements. Street Leaders can be anyone living in the Peterborough area that is willing to look out for problems in their streets, parks and communities. By becoming a Street Leader you will able to help improve your neighbourhoods street scene, by reporting problems such as graffiti ,fly tipping ,litter, dog fouling ,abandoned vehicles, street lighting and any other problems that are causing concern to the local community. Street Leaders can report problems direct to the Council by phoning the Peterborough City Council’s call centre on the dedicated free phone number, or by logging onto the Peterborough City Council website and using the on-line reporting form.
Street Leaders can choose to look after the street they live on or the places they regularly travel through on the way to work, school or shops. All new entrants into the scheme receive an induction; this enables them to recognise different types of enviro-crime. Street Leaders do not have to give up a set amount of time; the role can become part of everyday life.
If you are interested in joining the scheme or if you would like more information please phone Jamie Macfarlane on 01733 863885 or email streetleaders@peterborough.gov.uk

Parish Council Notices
Barnack Parish Council Meeting
Mon 10 Nov 2008. All seven parish councillors were present together with three members of the public. Apologies were received from Rachel McCallum PC Norman McCallum & Councillor D Over.
The chairman thanked all the residents who had helped to plant bulbs on the village verges during the past weeks. Twelve sacks of bulbs have been planted, which should make the village look most attractive in the spring.
A further request will be made to:
i. Burghley Estates to clear the weeds and briars from the garden land in Millstone Lane. The briars are now overhanging into Millstone Lane endangering the public.
ii. Crosskeys Housing to clear the weeds and over hanging bushes on the footpath between Little Northfields & Manor View
The wall on Walcot road has now been repaired and made safe.
Comments were forwarded on planning applications to fell two trees in Pilsgate. The council opposed both applications.
Residents in Bishops Walk are requested not to sweep the leaves from their gardens into the road as the leaves block the surface water drains and cause flooding at the end of Main Street.
Requests have been made for:
i) the culvert at the bottom of Pilsgate Hill to be cleared to allow rain water to run off the road.ii).The “village only” sign to be replaced at the south end of Wittering Road. iii) The bushes obscuring the “cul-de-sac”sign in Canon Drive to be cut back. iv) A dead bramble bush to be cleared from the verge in Stamford Road
Norman McCallum sent a written report as he was not able to be present:
i)The speedwatch boards have to be ordered in batches of five. The order for the board financed by the Community Leadership budget, which will be specifically for use in Barnack Bainton Southorpe Ufford and Helpston, will be placed when four more orders have been received. ii) Residents who want to volunteer to be trained to use this equipment should contact Norman individually. iii) There was recently a spate of vehicle crimes. Two suspects were arrested at the time and have been interviewed. Enquiries are continuing.
There was no report from David Over as he was unable to be present at the meeting. The next meeting will be at 7.30 p.m. in the Village Hall on Monday 8 December
Ufford Parish Council Meeting on November 12th 2008
Ian Glew has resigned from the Parish Council.Robin Morrison, who has agreed to replace Patricia as Parish Clerk from December, attended the meeting. Apologies were received from D. Over.
1) Ufford Conservation Appraisal
Jim Daley, Conservation Officer for PCC, gave a presentation on the proposals for extending the Conservation Area. The report also proposes clear guidelines for the restoration of historic buildings, repairs and alterations to newer buildings and development in gardens and open spaces. Every household will receive a letter and summary of the proposals in the next few days and there will be a six week consultation period. The full report can be viewed/downloaded at www.peterborough.gov.uk and can be inspected at Planning Services Reception, Bridge House, Peterborough. Copies are available on request.
Discussion was mainly about the consideration which will be given to these guidelines by the planners when future planning applications are being considered.
2) A load of topsoil has been dumped just inside the gateway of the playing field. PCC has been informed. If anyone would like a barrow load they are welcome to collect it. Next meeting. This will be held at 7.30 pm. December 10th in Ufford Village Hall
Bainton & Ashton Parish CounciL
All the councillors were present at the meeting on the 4th Nov. By arrangement, Ian Plant outlined the future plans for their business ‘Plants Eggs.’ Details of this and all other business are in the minutes on the notice board.
This has been said before, but at long last we should see the weight restriction order on the B1443 in force by the end of the year. Two councillors and the clerk went to a meeting at Bridge House to discuss the problem with various senior officials. We were assured that all obstacles had now been overcome and the signs are being made. Once the signs are on display, only those heavy vehicles on local business should be on this stretch of road.
We also talked about our other problem issues - Lolham Bridges and the bus-stop lay-by. Lolham Bridges: the clerk has been to check procedures at Helpston signal box and had a meeting with the traffic manager. It is unlikely that an easy solution will be seen to this dangerous problem and it may be that we just have to be especially careful when crossing the railway at this point. The City Council are still looking at a couple of suggestions, but a proper solution would be far too expensive. There seems more hope with a positive response to the bus stop. The dangers are acknowledged here and alternatives are being explored.
An allotment committee has now been formed (see notice board for details) and a group of around 20 people are interested - we just need a site. If anyone knows of a plot of land (around 1-2 acres) close to the villages, please let a councillor know. Another load of around 3,000 daffodil bulbs has been planted, so the villages will look even more colourful next spring. The idea of having a replacement set of village stocks was generally agreed to be an attractive suggestion, but the cost would be around £1200 - the parish clerk is looking for organisations that could help with the cost. Next meeting 6th Jan 2009
