The Rector’s Letter

Rector: The Reverend G B Austen M.A. M.Phil. KHT

In a few weeks’ time the Cricket World Cup is due to take place, and the venues of some of the matches are planned for the country of Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, cricket administrators in this country and internationally are making a corporate journey into an ethics-free zone. ‘It’s not for us to decide whether we should play in Zimbabwe,’ they argue; ‘The politicians must tell us what to do’ – and pay them compensation for lost earnings. There’s the rub: money is at stake. What price morality in the face of lost profits?
I am old enough to remember the expulsion of South Africa, then ruled by a white minority government, from international competition on the grounds of its brutality and racism. Peter Hain, now a government minister no less, was at the forefront of the protests against the last tour made by the white South African cricket team to England, and the expulsionists won the day. It was a simple case of morality, they argued: the way to effect change is to show regimes such as that in South Africa that the world community will not tolerate their abuses; that it will not and cannot be business as usual. So there sprung up a whole tranche of sanctions against South Africa, economic as well as sporting.
I supported the exclusion of South Africa. I considered – and still consider - the suppression of people by their government on the basis of their colour to be immoral. That’s why I am bemused and disconcerted by the response of the cricket authorities at the present time with regard to Zimbabwe.
Robert Mugabe’s regime in Zimbabwe is one of repression and terror. He presides over an administration which uses armed gangs of thugs to brutalise his own people; he is instigating policies which are depriving millions of Zimbabweans of food and employment; he is restraining the freedom of the press; he fixes elections; he is bullying the judiciary. Above all he is a racist: his objection to white farmers is that they are white.
So let’s return to the cricket authorities. They demand instructions from the government (and recompense). I may be a naïve idealist, but I have always thought that doing the right thing was a moral obligation for decent people, and that neither external pressure nor financial inducements should be necessary to encourage them to act properly. What is going on inside the minds of those who run cricket in this country and internationally if they are incapable of making a simple ethical judgement based on their own understanding of events?
The England captain recently said in an interview that cricketers were not capable of making such decisions on their own – they were merely sportsmen. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when I heard him. It doesn’t take rocket science to know right from wrong. Time was when being a sportsman meant being proud of one’s sense of integrity and fair play; now, apparently, it is the morality of expediency which rules. God help us.

Register your child for Barnack School
Children who are five years old on or before 31 August 2004 are eligible to start school in September 2003.
I should be grateful if parents intending to register their child or children for the September term would do so by Wednesday 30th April 2003.
Any parents interested in visiting our school to have a look around, meet the staff, and discuss their child’s education would be most welcome. John Green, Head Teacher

Women Connect
Women Connect will meet for the annual supper at the Millstone Inn on Thursday 13th February at 8pm. Will ALL please confirm their attendance to Sheila Berrill (740482) by Tuesday 11th February?

Community Broadband for the Barnack Area
Are you interested in Broadband Internet Access? The intention is to bring together a community group who desire broadband access. A trial wireless based service is being prepared for an initial small-scale rollout, but with the goal of covering the whole village and eventually other localities on a “not-for-profit” basis; this has been selected as the most likely means of providing broadband at the moment. Visit www.barnack.net (or just e-mail interestbarnack.net) as the local focal point for further information and to help determine the level of interest in providing this for our community. Andrew Alexander

Barnack Baptist Church
February Services: This month our combined service at Bretton Baptist Church will be on the 16th February at 10.30am, not the fourth Sunday of the month as usual. The change is so that we can meet Jon and Ali Budgell, two of our link missionaries who will be at Bretton on that day. This will be an opportunity to hear about the work they will soon be undertaking in the Congo. On the 2nd, 9th and 23rd of February there will be services in the Village Hall, Barnack starting at 10.30am, which will all include Sunday School activities for the children. Tea, coffee and cakes will be served after the services. If you’ve not been before, please come and give us a try one Sunday.
Charity Christmas Concert: The concert on the Monday evening before Christmas played to packed Village Hall. The evening’s programme presented by local singers, and musicians and singers from Bretton Baptist church, an Oboe Solo, some superb Christmas carols & songs, seasonal readings and ceilidh style music. The evening ended with the audience joining in singing ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’. A fantastic total of £327 for Spurgeon’s Child Care, was raised by this event and the Christmas Day offering. We hope this Christmas Charity Concert will become a regular feature on the villages’ calendar.

Christianity Explored
This new course will begin early in March. More details in next month’s Parish News or ring Graham and Karen Dunn 749068.

This time the subject will be ‘The Fairey Swordfish on convoy protection’ and will be given by Mr Bruce Vibert - a distinguished ex-Fleet Air Arm pilot - who will describe the history of this famous aircraft and his personal experiences flying it during the North Atlantic and Arctic campaigns of WWII. Further details will be advised in due course but please put this date in your diaries - as usual, all members, their guests and non-members are cordially invited. C.D.C.

Children’s Shoes For Romania 2002 update
On the children’s behalf, please accept our many thanks to everyone who has donated shoes for Romania. We’ve had a wonderful response to our appeal, having donated around 350 pairs of children’s footwear. The shoes were taken over to Romania during December, when there is a great need for them. We are currently hoping to resume collecting again in the spring, so watch this space. Once again, many thanks. Allison Alexander.

Hope and Homes for Children
On Friday the 29th of November, a coffee morning was held in aid of Hope and Homes for Children; a Charity helping children orphaned by war or disaster. This raised a total of £267. I would like to thank Mrs. J. Goodacre, Mrs. E. James, Mrs. V. Ward and Mrs. E. Young for their help and everyone who came and supported us. In December the Ecumenical Carol singing in Barnack raised £120, which, this year, was also donated to Hope and Homes for Children. On behalf of the Charity I would like to thank everyone who participated in or supported us for both these events. Allison Alexander.

On Saturday, 11th January, 22 of us sat down together for a delicious post-Christmas turkey lunch which had been prepared by members – the lion’s share being undertaken by Mr Jack Damian who provided and cooked the turkey! We all had a lovely time and thanks are due to all who helped in any way and especially to Jack.

31 members attended the first meeting of 2003. A Birthday Buttonhole was presented to Mrs Susan Jarman. After conducting the general business of the evening, Mr Ian Graham gave a talk on “The Great Exhibition of 1851”. This proved to be both amusing as well as educational. His knowledge of the subject was vast, obviously a subject close to his heart. The talk was very much enjoyed by members. Refreshments served later were delicious as ever.
Cynthia Dailey won the Raffle. The competition results were as follows: 1st Ivy Ratcliffe, 2nd Ivy Ratcliffe, 3rd Joan Wilding. Future outings include a meal at the Millstone and visits to “The Deep” in Hull, the Shoestring Theatre and Stamford Cinema.

Murder Mystery evening
Local intelligence sources reveal that there is going to be a murder committed at Barnack School on Saturday 8th February!!
The Murder Mystery Evening is a new fundraising venture for Barnack School and is being organised by the Barnack School Association. A group of actors are coming to perform a murder mystery story, and we, the audience, have to decide who is guilty of the crime. The winning team will receive the glory of knowing they are the super sleuths of Barnack! To add to the fun there is an option to come dressed as a detective or 1950’s style, or come just as you like. Tickets for the evening cost £7.50 for the entertainment and a two course supper and coffee. Bring your own drinks. The event is open to everyone, not just those with children at the school, but is for adults only. The evening starts at 7.30pm for a prompt 8pm start and should end at 11pm.
The venue is Barnack School Hall. Please ring Karen Dunn (749068) or Sarah Kirby (740694) for tickets or for more information.

February meetings will be on the 5th and 19th, in the Acres Community Room, 2pm-4pm.

The New Years Day Brunch
This was, once again, very well attended. More people seem to be finding out what a good village event this is. Nearly eighty of us, this year, thoroughly enjoyed plenty of good food and mulled wine. It was good to celebrate the New Year together.

Village Hall Spring Plant Sale
The plant sale will be held this year in the Village Hall on Saturday 24th May. There will be more details nearer to the date, but please make a note in your diaries for this important event in the Barnack gardening calendar. Barnack Cricket Club Quiz Nights
The best time you’ll have on a Sunday night that’s for sure…You don’t know what you’re missing, but don’t listen to me. This is what village celebrity Pete Farrer says, “I haven’t had such a great time since I realised my credit card had been stolen and the thief was spending less than my wife.” A great evening guaranteed every Sunday from 8.30pm – 10.30pm. New teams are always welcome, just come along as a team of 4 or join a team there for an amusing evening that will set you up for the week.

BAINTON AND ASHTON

Bainton Sunday School
Bainton Sunday School meets at 10am in St Mary’s Church on the first and third Sundays of each month during school term times. If there are any children aged 5+ who would like to join us they will be made very welcome. Please telephone Jane (740004) or Helen (740091) for more details.

The Buttercross Club
Our hardy group of carol singers braved a long evening in the wet and cold on December 19th and raised £100 for charity. Well done.
We start our meeting for 2003 with the AGM on Wednesday, February 5th at 7.45pm when we shall elect our committee for the next 12 months and discuss the future programme.
The Buttercross Club was formed in 1986. It was felt at that time that the ladies of the two villages would welcome a meeting each month to keep in touch with each other. We try to arrange an interesting series of talks, demonstrations and outings. Any profits made during the year from subscriptions, functions, donations etc are for charities of our choice.
The number of residents in Ashton and Bainton has increased and changed over the years and we should love to welcome newcomers to refresh our ideas. Please join us on February 5th. JCM

The 10th Bainton Lecture
This will be given by Julian Paren at 7.30 on Tuesday 4th March 2003 in the BARNACK VILLAGE HALL. Please note the venue. Julian Paren has recently retired after 26 years with the British Antarctic Survey. He is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and he was awarded the Polar Medal by the Queen in 1987. Julian is without doubt one of UK’s leading speakers on the Antarctic subject and is very much in demand. We are very honoured that he will give our 10th lecture, and we expect tickets to be in very short supply!! The website developed by Julian to promote interest in Antarctica for schools and the general public is www.antartica.ac.uk. Tickets are now on sale from Malcolm Morrice (740865) or John Wreford (740362) price £5.00 including light refreshments
