The Year of the Hobby
Seth Burkett has written a book with his grandmother, Molly, which is now for sale at the Post Office in Barnack or directly from Seth. ‘The Year of the Hobby’ tells the story of a young boy whose first love is football and yet is taken in by the appearance of a rare bird of prey near the village in which he lives. Seth said ‘My Granny gave me a first draft to look at because she knew I liked writing. I changed some of the language she had used and added a few bits to make the story more relevant to a modern audience. It is the first time I have got involved in anything like this, but I really enjoyed the experience and would do it again if I was asked.’ If you would like to buy a copy of the book, it costs £4.99 and is available either from Pete and Janet Farrer or from Seth, by emailing burkett86@hotmail.com or by knocking on Seth’s door!

Christmas Tree Festival
Barnack Christmas Tree Festival is now behind us, but it proved to be a great success. Everyone worked together with enthusiasm and the committee would like to say thank you to everyone who was, in any way, involved in its success. The variety of the choice of carols or songs for the trees was superb and many of the visitors to the festival commented on this. It would have been impossible to have voted for a “best tree,” as each one had its own charm and interest in the way in which the carols or songs were interpreted. It was a pleasure to welcome the many visitors to Barnack Church either to look at the trees or to enjoy the three excellent concerts. The festival raised a total of £461.30 for the church funds.
Friends of Barnack Church
The Annual General Meeting of the “Friends” will take place on Monday, March 16th at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. The Friends of Barnack Church started twenty three years ago, and we have been able to support the PCC in the care of the fabric of our ancient church, on several occasions, with the grant of a significant sum of money.
Most recently we gave almost £6,000 towards the repair of damaged windows. Our income comes from subscriptions, donations, and the majority from the 200 club.
We shall receive a report on this at the AGM, but having recruited several new members we have been able to give away more in prize money during 2008 than for many years, £770 in total.
December’s lucky winners are as follows:
£100 No.10 Mrs. W. Bell
£50 No.91 Mrs. C.M. Keen
£50 No.96 Mrs. M. Sindall
£50 No.61 Mr. D. Smith
£50 No.101 Mr. I. Jackson
£50 No.41 Miss A. Young
£20 No.75 Mrs. D. Walsh
£10 No.58 Mrs. K. Swan
£5 No.15 Mrs. M. Spencer
We invite anyone who cares about the fabric of our wonderful church to become a “Friend” if you are not one already, join the 200 Club and come along to the AGM Elizabeth Young, Chairman.
Women Connect

Barnack W.I.
The first meeting of the New Year took place on January 13th in the Village Hall, with new President, Adrienne Collins, in the chair, ably assisted by new secretary, Janet Duff. Adrienne reminded members that our branch had been flourishing since 1951, and is a little unusual in that it was started by a man, the artist, Wilfrid Wood, after whom our Village Hall is named! He was apparently concerned that his wife might not have enough to do while he was busy painting! The two principal items of business were to receive a report on the recent “Resolutions Selection Meeting”. This is an opportunity for all W.I.s to study the items which have been proposed for debate at the AGM in June. Of the five shortlisted one or two will eventually be chosen. Following on from that Adrienne told members that it is our turn this year to send a delegate to the AGM, and asked for a volunteer.
Our talk was on “The Corn Exchange Theatre Refurbishment”, given by enthusiastic volunteer, Mike Lee. Although not feeling too well Mr. Lee impressed us with the story of this amazing achievement, and showed a short video to illustrate the changes that have transformed the old “Exchange” into a modern theatre. Almost all the work has been carried out by volunteers. Mr. Lee has kept a record of the volunteer hours worked and this equates to over £1,000,000 of paid time! He was warmly thanked by Barbara Knights.
Our next meeting is on February 10th when Tessa Jackson will talk on “Reflexology.

Church Notes
Wow!
The vestry project is finished and it looks fantastic. John Ward, Stuart McCarey and Eddie Barker have worked their magic and transformed this room into a bright and spacious area. To see before and after photos (courtesy of George Farmer) look on the noticeboard at the back of the Church. Many thanks – a job well done.
Needles at the Ready
Our next project, for posterity, and to save our knees, is to make some new hassocks (kneelers) for the church. They will be embroidered in simple designs in cross-stitch. Pre-printed canvas packs, costing £35 each, will be stitched by volunteers, who will meet for coffee, conviviality and cross-stitch. If you would like to participate, please contact us as soon as possible. If anyone would like to sponsor a hassock in memory of a loved one, we will include a label on the back. Please add your name to the list in church.

We have had a good response to our note inviting people to learn the art of bell-ringing. Coaching sessions will start shortly. Remember, everyone is welcome to learn this unique skill – and develop a joy for life.

Bainton & Ashton Parish Council
Your councillors are: Chris Agnew (Tel. 740007) Andy Totten (740381) Judith Morrice (740865) Zena Coles (Ashton)(740550) and Jane franks (740004)
Despite firm promises made by the Transport Dept at Peterborough City Council, we are still awaiting erection of the weight restriction signs on the B1443. Also, we still await news regarding our concerns about Bainton bus stop and Lolham Crossing. We will persist!
We are still looking for a suitable village site to get our planned allotments up and running - any offers? We would like to get the stocks rebuilt in Tallington Road but are having trouble getting a grant, and we are have been promised street lighting in the Pinfold, but are still awaiting this to start. Everything seems to be waiting to happen! Hopefully better news next time! Next meeting 3rd March.
Ufford Parish Council meetings on December 20thand January 14th
1 The budget was accepted and next year`s precept will be unchanged.
2 Parking problems in Newport Way are being investigated. Residents and visitors are reminded to show consideration for other road users.
3 The future of the UPC website is being considered during the restructuring of the parish council. We do not wish to spend precept money on it before consulting residents about how often they used when it was being regularly updated. What information was of most use? Please let a parish councillor know your opinions.
4 A survey of the stone walls, which are visible, in the Conservation Area has been undertaken by the parish council. Some are very well maintained but the majority are in need of attention. Many walls have cracks in their copings, allowing water to penetrate. Most old walls include stones which have weathered away to a powder, leaving the upper courses unsupported. Owners are advised to inspect and carry out remedial work on these walls before they collapse. There are 3 places where walls have fallen down – the churchyard wall, beside the spinney on the north side of Walcot Boad and north of Ufford Farm on the Bainton Road. A section of the wall between the White Hart and the Village Hall is also in need of permanent repair.
The owners of walls are responsible for their maintenance and repair but the parish council has been investigating possible sources of funding and may be able to help with applications. There is also information from PCC about building walls. Please let Frieda know if you would like to borrow the file.
Barnack Parish Council
Barnack Parish Council met on Monday 12 January 2009 at the Wilfrid Wood Hall. All the seven members of the council were present together with the clerk, Cllr David Over, PC McCallum and two members of the public.
It was decided to invite the manager of Crosskeys Housing together with the local representative to the February meeting to try to resolve some outstanding issues regarding the garage areas and footpaths in Orchard Road and Little Northfields.
The Highways Agency has been requested to widen and lengthen the slip lane at the junction of the A1 and the Green Drift.
A request has been forwarded for the faulty street lights in Uffington Road, Bishops Walk and Orchard Road to be repaired. Residents are asked to inform the clerk to the council if they find street lights out of order.
Two planning applications were received for comment: 08/01487/CTR to fell one Walnut tree at Greenfields, Station Road, Barnack. 08/01267/FUL dormer windows to the south elevation at 4 The Old Stackyard, Pilsgate. There were no objections to either application.
Cllr Over stated that the council tax will be rising by 2.4%, before the Police and Fire services have submitted their figures.
PC McCallum gave a demonstration of the Community Speedwatch system. An order has been placed for a Speedwatch system for the Barnack Ward, and this should arrive by the end of the month. Any residents that wish to be trained on the equipment should contact PC McCallum directly.
A request will be made for the road markings at the end of Bishop’s Walk, near the Post Office to be re-painted.
In the open forum it was reported that the security lights at the back of Barnack C of E School are disturbing the neighbours.
The next meeting will be held on Monday 9 February 2009 in the village hall. All are welcome.
A full copy of the minutes can be found on the notice board by the Post Office and the Village Hall in Barnack, and on the bus shelter in Pilsgate. They are also available on www.barnackparishcouncil.org .
Southorpe Parish Council 12 Jan 09
Traffic speed in the village continued to be a concern. PC McCallum reported that he had monitored the traffic on several occasions during the period of the road works on the A1 and had issued approximately eight fixed penalty notices. Verbal warnings had been issued to many more motorists; offenders were a mix of locals and those avoiding the road works. Drivers are asked to please consider the safety of pedestrians when driving through Southorpe. He demonstrated the Speedwatch equipment that would soon be available to monitor traffic speed; he hoped to train a number of volunteers from each village to use the equipment. Any Southorpe residents interested in being trained should contact the Clerk on 740511 or at southorpeclerk@hotmail,co.uk. It was thought that monitoring of the traffic during the morning and evening rush hours would be the most effective deterrent to speeding. The results of the Police Authority traffic survey were discussed, average speed in Main Street was shown to be close to 40 mph. The Chairman was seeking a meeting with Highways to discuss further traffic calming measures that could be taken.
Some further kerbs had been installed at the southern end of the village to help prevent the road from flooding. Highways would now be asked if further works could be undertaken to prevent further damage to the verges.
The Clerk reported that English Heritage had decided not to list the telephone kiosk; PCC were to appeal this decision.
A Natural Environmental Project Grant application to PCC had been successful and bulbs ‘in the green’, including snowdrops, bluebells and aconites, had been ordered for planting in the parish playing field in March/April.
A further grant of £500 had been received from David Over, City Councillor, for an environmental project. It had been intended to use this for hedge laying but a suitable site had not been identified. Alternative uses were discussed and ideas are to be sought from residents.
The next Parish Council meeting will take place on 9 March 2009.
