Pause for Thought July 2010
I am writing this month as Chair of Barnack School governors not your retired Parish Priest!
July will see once again the ending of another school year and that always gives those of us involved in the life of a school time for reflection on the past year and lots of plans for the next academic year. Barnack School has had a strange year in that Mr Krzanicki left us at the end of the Christmas term and we were joined by Mr Davis who came to jointly act as Headteacher with Mrs Green until a new Head was permanently appointed. The governors were delighted to be able to appoint Mr Wainwright as our new Headteacher and we look forward to working with him from September.
Yet despite all this the school has had a really good year and the results of tests have shown that all the children have made good academic progress, but, of course, as important as this is, a school is about so much more than academic success.
At Barnack we have happy children who are polite, keen to be involved in all sorts of activities and want to be at school. The School Council, which consists of a representative from each year group, asked by a candidate for a teaching post what they would change about the school said as one ‘Nothing!’
We know that those who leave us at the end of this term, though they are really ready to move on, will be sad on that last day that a very special part of their education is over, but we also know that they go from the school with a grounding that will serve them throughout their lives. A grounding that includes a respect for other people, an ability to listen to others and an openness to new ideas.
Nationally it is well recognized that pupils from church schools outperform others. We see Barnack School as our village school, but it is also a church school and everything that we do is rooted and grounded in Christian principles which is why it is such a special community.
We need to thank the adults of that community for the way in which they have led the school this year, for the love and care that they have given to the children. I often look on with amazement at what they manage to achieve!
Please pray for your village school, for the young people who are leaving, for the staff as they take a break and for Mr Wainwright as he takes up his new post. We look forward to an exciting new phase in the life of the school.
Margaret
