The Rector’s Letter

Rector: The Reverend G B Austen M.A. M.Phil. KHT

The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford, Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET
Telephone: Stamford 740234 E-mail: austenglobalnet.co.uk

A New Year brings with it new opportunities for us all, and that is certainly the case for me and my family as we begin 2003.

Later this year we shall be leaving the parishes here and beginning a new chapter in our lives. For some time, as many of you will know, I have been greatly interested in teaching, and have been able to offer some part time teaching for the last few years in local schools. The opportunity has recently arisen for me to consider a full time teaching post, which I have now accepted. I shall therefore become a full time teacher of English at Stamford High School from 1 September 2003.

It is my intention to continue to offer my services to the Church as a priest in a non-stipendiary (unpaid) capacity, although clearly that will be on a much-reduced basis as a full time teacher. My decision, then, is not a withdrawal from my vocation and ministry, but a change in its nature.

I have served twenty years in the parish ministry of the Church of England and fifteen of those have been spent in the benefice of Barnack with Ufford and Bainton. The time comes when we all need new challenges and that time has come for me – and, I am sure, for the parishes. It is always best to finish a job at the right time, before one stays too long, and I believe that time has come.

For a long time I have felt that the Church must look radically at its provision of priests, since it simply cannot go on in the way it has always done, maintaining an immensely costly stipendiary parochial ministry. I came to the conclusion that more non-stipendiary priests was the only solution to the financial and vocational crisis. I suppose you could say that I am now doing something about converting theory into practice.

An interregnum in these parishes will undoubtedly bring with it some uncertainty, and there is the strong possibility of a further amalgamation of parishes, although that is for others to decide. The parishes are in good heart and I am sure that they will in turn rise to this new challenge which faces them.

It is never easy to know when to make such announcements, and I am conscious that quite a while must elapse before we finally depart in the Summer; nevertheless village grapevines being what they are it seemed sensible to make an announcement now!

I don’t want the remaining months to be one long goodbye, so my intention is to get on with what needs to be done in the present rather than thinking too much as yet about the future.

I am sure that it goes without saying that times like this are a bewildering mixture of excitement and sadness. That is certainly so for us.

I wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year.

Fr. Glyn Austen

GENERAL NOTICES

From Pc 1213 Norman McCallum:

I hope that everybody has recovered from their Christmas festivities. May I wish everyone best wishes for 2003.
No doubt cycles were on many people’s Christmas list? Can I remind everyone that a good security lock is a worthwhile buy to prevent loss of some of these expensive bikes that are available nowadays. Also for the months of January and February I will be offering free cycle coding! Please call me on the following numbers to arrange an appointment, leaving your name and phone number:
• 01733 330043 (Bretton Police Station – 9.30 to 3.30 Monday to Friday)
• 01733 563232 (NRC Department – Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm)
I am still finding vehicles parked on my beat with items on display – phones, bags, loose change etc. This makes it very tempting for any passing criminals. Please remove all items from display – even if parked on your driveway. Please don’t become a victim of car crime this year.

At our Annual General Meeting in August, Mrs Cerys Symonds and Mrs Jenny Wade retired from the Village Hall committee. We would like to thank them for their support and hard work.
Mrs Margaret Pollard will retire from her job as Village Hall cleaner at the end of the year. Her skills will certainly be missed.
All the vacant positions have been filled. Mrs Trudy Hayes is to be our new secretary and Mrs Elizabeth James has joined as a committee member.
The Village Hall committee is now a member of Countryside Watch. Any relevant information will be put on the notice board outside the Village Hall or if it directly concerns Ufford it will be posted through your door. Sally Ward.

Ufford Ladies
The next meeting, on January 28th at 7:45 pm at Ufford Village Hall, will be ‘Powder and Paint’, the story of make-up through the ages, given by Jill Collinge . Please remember to collect all your used postage stamps and bring them along to the meeting.
Ufford Parish Council meeting November 19th 2002
We are still waiting for the dog- waste bin at the bottom of the village. Are we really expecting too much of dog owners to carry a plastic bag and clean up after their dogs? The issue of plants overhanging footways has been passed on to Peterborough City Council. The parish clerk agreed to bring to the attention of the city council the recurrent flooding this autumn across all the roads into Ufford. Ditches and drainage trenches have not been cleaned. He is also asking for the roadsweeping lorry to brush up all the fallen leaves still lying on the roadsides, footways and verges.
The city council has already been asked to remove the rubbish and repair the fencing at the Ashton Corner but now claim that the land does not belong to them. Many residents will remember that there used to be a track between the two roads (shown as an unfenced road on the 1963 OS map). It became overgrown and was fenced to prevent fly tipping.
Craig Campbell, the local surveyor, is to be invited to meet the councillors on site to discuss the resurfacing of the footway between the bollards at the top of the hill and the road. (Please let us have opinions about possible kerbing and the provision of a short term parking place above the bollards).
Concern was expressed about the long power cut after the October gale and the frequent short interruptions in electricity supply. Residents are reminded that during power cuts Sally opens up the village hall and serves hot drinks.

BARNACK, PILSGATE AND SOUTHORPE

Southorpe Parish Council
Meeting held on 2 December 2002. It was noted that the traffic lights and speed restrictions had been removed by the quarry. However, the speed restriction of 30 mph had not been implemented in the village and the Clerk will write to Peterborough City Council to find out when it will happen.
There will be a Parish Council training session for Councillors in the Spring which Ufford Parish Council are arranging and Southorpe Parish Council have agreed to send two Councillors to this.
The Clerk had heard from British Rail regarding the damage to the railway bridge at the bottom end of the village. It appears that the repairs to the bridge are not of a sufficiently high priority for the work to be done although it is on their “list”.
A letter has been written to RAF Wittering regarding the aircraft noise and the low level flying over the village. A reply has now been received and if you are disturbed by the low level flying, please contact Squadron Leader A.W. Walsh on 01780 783838 extension 7470 immediately giving him the exact time of the over flight, the approximate height and the direction of the aircraft.
The Council agreed the budget for 2003. It was agreed that the bonfire party had been a great success and a very enjoyable evening. However a discussion took place regarding Halloween night – trick ‘n’ treat, since concern was expressed that a very few parents trying to control a large number of children through the village in the dark with was felt to be quite dangerous. Traffic travels through the village quickly, often not slowing down. It was agreed that this should be an agenda item for the AGM in March.
Date of next meeting: Southorpe Parish Council - Monday, 17 March 2003 at 7.00pm followed by the AGM at 8.00pm at Stonecroft, Southorpe. Please come along.
Clerk to Southorpe Parish Council

Barnack Methodist Chapel
The December Cake Stall and Coffee morning held on Saturday, 7th December raised a further £131.32 including donations of £10. We are most grateful to all those who have supported us during the year and look forward to seeing you again in February – no Coffee Morning in January. The Coffee and Mince Pie afternoon on 13th December was not quite so well attended – probably due to the poor weather – but nevertheless it raised £110 and this will be sent to the Romanian Orphanage.
May we take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Barnack Bowls Club
The Race Night on 16 November was a big success and raised £805 for Club funds.

Barnack Bridge Club
20 people enjoyed a pre-Christmas bridge evening on 25th November with refreshments.  We were pleased to see some players who had not attended before and look forward to welcoming them back in the not too distant future. Prizes were awarded to the two winning couples. It was decided to cancel the next club evening on 30th December as many people are busy over the Christmas period and therefore the next meeting will be on Monday 27th January at 7.15pm as usual.

Murder Mystery evening
Barnack School Association is hosting a Murder Mystery Evening on Saturday February 8th in the Barnack School Hall. Look out for more details in the February Parish News.

The next meeting will be held on 5th February 2003 starting at 2pm at the Acres, when we would welcome new members.

Christmas Bazaar
This was another enjoyable event. Thank you to those who provided lunches, to stallholders and to Father Christmas who managed to spare a few hours to give a smiling welcome to the children. Thank you to everyone who supported us. £1111.74 was raised for St. John Baptist Church.

Barnack WI Meeting
29 members attended the Annual meeting on Tuesday December 10th 2002.
The mulled wine served on a bitterly cold evening was well received and very much appreciated.
Birthday Buttonholes were presented to Wendy Bell, Adrienne Collins and Ivy Ratcliffe.
After conducting the general business of the meeting, Mrs Sandra Gordon-Jones demonstrated, with great skill, her ideas for a Christmas Finger Buffet. She produced some delicious food using everyday products from her well-stocked store cupboard.
WI members will now be blamed for a rush on Filo pastry and pesto to name but two items, from the local supermarkets.
We were then treated to a superb supper, provided by Sandra and the Tea Hostesses.
Margaret Tuck, Maureen Groom and Wendy Bell won the main Raffle prizes.
The Competition Cup was presented to Joan Wilding with Margaret Broadbelt and Sylvia Baker runners up.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 14th January 2003 at 7.30pm in the Wilfrid Wood Hall when Mr Ian Graham will be talking about the “Great Exhibition of 1851”.
Do come along and join us.

Barnack Cricket Club Quiz Nights
You don’t know what you’re missing, or perhaps you do! A riotous evening guaranteed every Sunday from 8.30pm – 10.30pm. Good beer and all the latest jokes. New teams are always welcome, just come along as a team of 4 or join a team there for an amusing evening that will set you up for the week. You could also be going home with cash money in your pockets!

BAINTON AND ASHTON

Bainton and Ashton Parish Council
Mr Agnew welcomed nine residents and Mr. David Over (City Councillor) to the meeting held in December.

Barnack Pre-School: Mr. Agnew thanked Liz James for attending the meeting and speaking on behalf of Barnack Pre-School regarding the possibility of setting up a ‘hardship fund’. At the time no decision could be made as not all of the Parish Councillors could be present but subsequently it has been decided to make a donation of £125 to Barnack Pre-School funds.
Traffic Calming in Ashton: The final speed hump in Ashton will be between ‘Plashetts’ and the Torpel Way. The 30mph limit is going ahead. The need for wooden posts at the sides of the humps will be monitored over the next couple of months to see whether there is any churning-up of the verges.
Bainton Play Area: PCC had reviewed the play area and it had scored high in risk assessment and low in play value. Mr. David Over said that PCC should be urged to carry out the necessary improvements as soon as possible.
Post Collection Times: The time of the first collection in Bainton is 7am.
Land at King Street, Helpston (Torpel Manor): Enforcement Notices have been served on the owners of the above site.
Proposed HGV ban B1443: The Parish Council is greatly in favour of this.
Mobile Library Routes from 6th January 2003:
Ashton: Junction Wednesday 10.35 – 10.55;
Bainton: Wednesday 11.00 - 11.20.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 11th February 2003 at 8pm in the Reading Room. Everyone is welcome.
If anyone is interested in information about flooding and flood prevention, please contact the Clerk on 740528.

Key Roster, St Mary’s Church, Bainton, 2003
I seem to have had a very ‘senior moment’ when drawing up the next key roster as I have changed the handing over of the key for each week to MONDAY instead of Sunday, starting 6th January, 2003. I do hope this will not cause any inconvenience and we can stick to the list as printed. Please accept my sincere apologies. Many thanks to all those who continue to open and close our Church each week. If anyone else would like to join us please let me know and I will include them in the next list due out in May 2003.
S. Bratley, 740269.

Buttercross Club
We thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas Party on December 4th. Excellent mulled wine put us in good voice for our sing-a-long to Elizabeth Snowball on keyboard, Tony Gower, lead singer and our inimitable compere, Andy Totten. It was a happy evening to mark the end of our year’s programme.
We do not have a meeting in January. The Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 5th at 7.45pm. Please come along to help elect our committee and plan our programme for 2003. We need to know your thoughts and ideas. JM
