This month’s letter concerns the charity 'Family
Care' which is supported by the congregation of St John the Baptist
Church, Barnack.
Family Care
As I write these words Christmas is a bare two weeks away, a time
when families gather together, and with the birth of the Christ child
we remember the Holy Family in Bethlehem. This Family faced great
hardship, a young mother giving birth to her first child in a stable,
and then with her husband and child having to escape persecution by
becoming refugees in a foreign land.
So it is a not inappropriate moment to write about the work of Family
Care, the Church working with vulnerable families in Peterborough
Diocese. The work of caring for families within our diocese began
some 150 years ago, and has changed and adapted to meet the changing
circumstances of society. However at its heart has always been a concern
for children and the families in which they live. In recent times
it has “moved from just caring for young mums and their babies to
being at the forefront of work involving vulnerable families and children
at risk.... dealing with the problems of the late twentieth century
and child protection issues”, to quote the Revd. Mike Craggs, Family
Care’s Chairman.
Family Care has two residential homes, one in Northampton and one
in Peterborough, where families can live during an extended period
of assessment. More recently it has expanded its work into day care
and community assessments and outreach work in Peterborough with the
Sure Start First Steps Programme. Some three years ago Family Care
was asked to research and produce, in association with Peterborough
City Council, the Second Sure Start Programme, now up and running.
Other initiatives have included the production of information packs.
A series on parenting skills designed especially for parents with
learning disabilities was widely praised. More recently, and in partnership
with UNICEF, a pictorial guide to breast feeding has been produced.
The work of Family Care is highly regarded. Referrals often come from
beyond our Diocese. During this last year a family from Northern Ireland,
where no similar provision exists, came to one of the residential
homes for assessment. It is also highly regarded by those who have
been helped through difficult times. A former resident of Marcus House
writes, “We have also just bought our property and enjoy days out
at the butterfly park, going to the park and my kids’ favourite, swimming,
all in all just spending time as a happy family thanks to the help
and support from Marcus House, who I still keep in touch with and
miss.”
This high regard has been further recognised by the award of an MBE
to Elizabeth Ingram, the recently retired Chief Executive. She was
also appointed a non-residentiary Lay Canon of Peterborough Cathedral
for her services to the Diocese, the first time a Lay Canon has been
admitted to the College of Canons.
Until very recently Helen Morrice of Ufford was Vice Chairman and
a Trustee of Family Care. She explains that while much of the funding
comes from the Diocese, a significant amount is the money raised by
individual parishes within their Deaneries. Barnack Deanery is second
only to Rutland in the amount given to Family Care, and within our
Deanery this benefice is the most generous. Please encourage your
Parish to continue this generosity, and please pray for the work of
Family Care in supporting some of the most vulnerable families in
our midst.

Youth Groups Funding Increased!
Youth and Community groups throughout Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
can still benefit from approximately £120,000 of government
funding between December 2004 and March 2005. The Local Network Fund
at Cambridgeshire ACRE has secured extra funding for their current
financial year as well as a third year’s funding of approximately
£366,000 to enable groups to apply for projects from £250
to £7,000.
Any voluntary group, charity, association or self-help group working
with children or young people who are disadvantaged in some way can
apply to the Fund, for imaginative projects that fit into the four
main themes; aspiration and experiences, economic disadvantage, isolation
and access and children’s voices.
Local Network Fund Co-ordinator Corrina Nicholson said, “Our fund
is very people friendly, Development Officer Jenny Roberts is on hand
every step of the way to talk over project ideas, give help with filling
in forms, or any other background information groups may need. Workshops
are provided throughout the year on filling out the forms as well
as one-to-one meetings.”
Any groups interested in applying for a grant should contact the Local
Network Fund Call Centre on 0845 113 0161 for a form or contact Development
Officer Jenny Roberts on 01353 860850 or email jenny.robertscambsacre.org.uk
for further information.

number of passengers) and the return time will be 12.30.

Royal British Legion
It was pleasing to note another large turnout of 70-80 villagers at
the Remembrance Day Ceremony at the War Memorial, which was followed
by a service at St John the Baptist Church, both conducted by the
Reverend John Wilson. Wreaths were laid by the RBL, Parish Council
and the Royal Air Force. As previously, a group of people stood spontaneously
at the War Memorial at 11am on November 11th as part of a revival
of this custom nationwide.
The branch held its AGM on 22nd November at which the current committee
was re-elected - reinforced by one new member. 5 new members joined
during the year, bringing the present membership to 65. Sadly, two
long-serving members - Mrs LM Gray and RG Green - passed away recently.
The Branch’s Social Fund provided mobility aids and cordless phones
for elderly local members and support given to assist with taxi fares
for hospital visits. The Welfare Officer has visited sick members
in hospital and at home, on a regular basis and has attended a special
Legion Welfare Course.
During another active year the Legion arranged various events, including
visits, lectures, Summer and Winter fund-raising parties, a stand
at the Horticultural Show and Bingo sessions at the Acres. The traditional
‘Winter Supper’ will be held on 7th February, 2005. Further information
on this will be given in next month’s magazine.
Last but not least, it was reported that an anonymous benefactor has
most generously presented the Branch with an impressive new standard
and this will be dedicated officially next year - probably as part
of the Village’s 60th VE-VJ Day celebrations, at which the Legion
will be involved, some time in July. Charles Clarke

Ufford Parish Council Meeting, November 24th 2004
White Hart: Following the proposed alterations to the White
Hart, the owners made an application for structural alterations to licensed
premises. In accordance with residents‘ wishes (voiced at the well attended
village meeting in May 2004), UPC agreed to make representations to
the magistrates‘ court.
Residents have raised a variety of concerns, which were mirrored by
City Councillors at the Planning Meeting in July. Details of a noise
mitigation scheme were to be provided; UPC note that to date no details
have been received from the planning department.
Bus shelters: Despite numerous attempts to resolve the issue
of potential replacement of the bus shelters and who should pay for
them, PCC has still not replied to UPC, but we are following this up
regularly.
Trees and branches: Despite numerous attempts to resolve the
issue of the cutting back of overhanging trees and branches, PCC has
still not replied or done the necessary work. We are also following
this up.
Drainage problems: PCC Highways Department is the one exception!
Thanks are due for the time, effort and expenditure during the investigations
and actions which should help to alleviate, if not remedy, Ufford‘s
drainage problems.
The Ladies’ Group
We all enjoyed the seasonal buffet evening and thanks are due to all
who prepared and served the delicious food. Sheila Berrill will try
to convince us that “Retirement is Fun” at our next meeting. This will
be at 7.45 on Tuesday, January 25th at Ufford Village Hall. This is
the time of year to reflect and to start to plan ahead. The Ladies`
Group is due for a new Chairman and a new Secretary, but both might
consider carrying on with a little gentle persuasion! Bearing in mind
that most of our members do not live in Ufford, would this be a better
name for the group and would any of our members from one of the other
villages like to stand? And what speakers, outings and social events
would you like next year? Please let us know.

The Good News Van
There will be open house at The Lodge, Bainton Road, Barnack on January
18th between 10.30 and 12noon, when the next Good News Van Coffee Morning
takes place. Everyone is welcome to drop in for a coffee and a chat,
whether you are borrowing books, videos and tapes or not. Don’t forget
that if you can’t come on that date and want to borrow a book we keep
a small selection of books at our house. Just ring us on 740728 and
we will arrange a convenient time for you to come and choose a book.
Cricket Club
It has been alleged by some residents of Whitman Close that people are
practising golf on the cricket ground, with the potential to injure
or cause damage to property. This is clearly not part of the Cricket
Club’s activities and will also cause irreparable damage to the playing
surfaces. If you are one of those people, you have no right or permission
to play golf, so please stop!
The Cricket Club’s Annual General Meeting will take place at the Club
on Monday January 10th, 2005, starting at 8.00.pm. Please make a note
in your new diaries. There will be several Management Committee positions
vacant, and volunteers from the membership, prepared to take on a role
in helping to run the Club, would be most welcome. The Club cannot function
without a full Management Committee. David Smith

Brilliant results
Ofsted, the Government Office for Standards in Education, inspected
Barnack School for four days last October. The initial feedback from
the team of inspectors was good, and the recently published, final report
is excellent.
Ofsted congratulated us for our high standards in developing pupils’
attitudes, behaviour and values, for the quality of teaching and the
pastoral care of children. The report concluded that the school’s ethos
is one of a strong community spirit in which individuals are valued,
helping them to succeed and develop self-confidence and self-esteem.
The Section 23 report concluded that ‘Barnack School is an excellent
church school with a distinctly Christian ethos. Collective worship
is very good.’ The only key issue is to improve the detail in the School
Development Plan, which we’ll start to tackle soon.
Congratulations to all the teachers, support staff, pupils, parents
and governors who work so hard to make Barnack School so outstanding.
If you would like more information about the Ofsted report please contact
the Head Teacher, Mr Green, or the Chairman of Governors, Mark Haines-Eynon.
Funds for Pre-School’s fence
Thank you to everyone who came to Pre-school’s Christmas Coffee morning
– it was a great success and enjoyed by parents and children . We raised
just over £150, which will go in the kitty for our new fence.
As part of the School Grounds Project Pre-School is extending its outside
play area. Over the coming year we need to raise at least £1,000
for new fencing and a larger, paved area. Look out for details of our
ever-popular fund-raising Quiz Night, coming up in February or March,
and possibly a mums’ sponsored abseil!
Christmas Bingo at School
The Christmas Bingo evening was another big success and raised over
£370 for BSA funds to support Barnack School. There were plenty
of adults and children eager to be the first to shout ‘house’ or win
a prize in the grand raffle. Thank you to everyone who joined in the
fun.
Murder Mystery
Join us for an evening of mystery and murder – February 26th 2005
Next month the BSA is hosting a special murder mystery evening at School.
O.A.R.S. Murder Mystery Company will be performing and it promises to
be a fun-filled evening of detection and deduction. Everyone is welcome.
Look out for more details coming soon.

Christmas Market Thanks
There was a warm and welcoming smell of warm mince pies and mulled wine
as customers and friends came to enjoy the Christmas Market in Barnack
Village Hall on November the 27th. Stalls piled high with enticing goods
filled every corner of the room. Father Christmas found an opening in
his busy schedule to spend time with the children. He is always a very
welcome visitor.
The smiling workers in the kitchen were kept busy serving delicious
lunches to an endless stream of diners. This was a most enjoyable event,
and grateful thanks go to everyone who provided items for the stalls,
food for the lunches, and to those of you who worked so hard on the
day. Our thanks go to all who attended, for this happy occasion raised
the magnificent sum of £1283 for St, John Baptist Church, Barnack.
Loss from Barnack Church
It has come to the attention of the Churchwardens that the pictures
which form the series ‘Stations of the Cross’ have been removed from
the interior walls of the church, and indeed (it would appear) from
the church itself.
We would be grateful if those responsible for moving the pictures would
return them to the church, or to one of the Churchwardens, as soon as
possible.
Many thanks, John Ward (740016) and Alison Longman 740435.
Vandalism in Barnack Church
Over recent months, there have been a number of acts of vandalism causing
significant harm to Barnack church. These include damage to the exterior
of the building, inflicted in a variety of ways, and within the wider
churchyard. On one occasion there has also been internal damage. All
of this activity is, of course, criminal and wilful in nature.
It is already hugely expensive to carry out routine repairs to the fabric
of the church, without having to meet the additional cost of repairing
or replacing spoilt or broken items as well. It is also distressing
and time-consuming for those connected with the church to have to deal
with the aftermath of such acts. Most people would agree that the church
building is a valuable and beautiful part of Barnack’s heritage, and
to see it desecrated and defaced for no good reason whatsoever is very
sad indeed.
The Churchwardens and members of Barnack PCC would ask that all Barnack
residents are vigilant as regards the church in coming weeks or months,
reporting any observation of wrong-doing to the police and to church
officials. The local policeman is aware of the situation, and happy
to receive information. We would also ask local heads of families to
impress on their younger members the fact that vandalism is a criminal
activity, and particularly unfortunate when it affects such a fine and
historically important landmark as Barnack church. Please help us to
stop this spate of terrible behaviour before damage is done which cannot
be put right.
Should anyone wish to provide any relevant information, or indeed to
make a donation to help to meet the cost of repairing existing damage,
please contact either John Ward (740016) or Alison Longman (740435).
Barnack Bowls Club
The winners of the November 200 Club draw were:
No 16 Mima MacKellar £25
No 26 Mrs J Honour £15
No 52 Bill How £10
Members of the 200 Club are reminded that their subscription for 2005
is now due. Of course, new members are always welcome – the subscription
is £13 for 6 months and £24 for 12 months.
Hope and Homes for Children
There will be a Coffee Morning at the home of Elizabeth Young, 1, Canon
Drive, Barnack, on Friday, February 4th, from 10.30 to 12 noon, with
Bring and Buy and Raffle. Hope and Homes is a charity which provides
homes for children who
are orphaned by war or disaster. It was set up in 1994 by Mark Cook,
who was the commander of the British U.N. contingent in Croatia, after
he had witnessed the terrible suffering of the young innocent victims
of the war in Bosnia. In 2005
children still desperately need our help. Every 30 seconds a child is
lost, orphaned or abandoned as a direct result of war or disaster. Please
come and support us so that these children can be given a foundation
for the future, and a family for life. All are welcome. Jose Irving-Bell.
Darby & Joan Club
At the last meeting in November members played an amusing version of
“Give us a Clue”. The Competition for Nut Crackers was won by Miss Sheila
Betts, 2nd Mrs Hudson and 3rd Mrs Porter.
Members went by coach to Ketton Sports Club for their Christmas Lunch.
An excellent Roast Turkey Meal with Christmas Pudding or Trifle was
enjoyed and, after the meal, Millie Burrows entertained on the piano.
Before returning home, each member was presented with a small gift.
Winner of the Betty Waters Cup for scoring most points in the competitions
over the year was Mrs Grant, 2nd Mrs Jackson and 3rd Mrs Porter.
The first meeting of 2005 will be held on Wednesday, 2nd February at
2.00pm at the Acres. New members welcome.
Barnack Cricket Club Quiz
Imagine fine wines from around the world, highly hopped ales lovingly
cellared to perfection… Abbey beers, India Pale Ales, Steam beers, Creamy
stouts, Pilsners and Wheat Beer. Mmmm, yummy but hold on, you’d better
keep on imagining ‘cos you just never quite know what liquid refreshments
are on offer at the Cricket Club these days. However, the one thing
you are guaranteed every single Sunday night is a cracking good time.

Bainton
And Ashton Buttercross Club Christmas Party Night
Around 50 people enjoyed a wonderful evening on 1st December, getting
Advent off to an excellent start. The tables positively
groaned with the weight of delicious food and the two Quizzes, organised
by Judith Morrice and Sheila Bratley, kept the little grey cells working and
conversation flowing throughout the evening. Marvellous
entertainment followed - provided by Matthew and Kitty Hardy and Sarah
Fancourt, with poetry, sketch and song: and their rendition of
Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘three little maids from school’ was performed
with great humour and will be long remembered! Our thanks to them.
The evening ended with everyone joining in singing Carols, accompanied
on the keyboard by Sheila Bratley - this was a lovely finale to a memorable
evening. Thank you Sheila, also to Michael Perkins and Malcolm
Morrice for manning the bar and to all who helped to make this such
a special event. £45 was raised towards charity.
We do not meet in January, but February 2nd will be our Annual
General Meeting and we would welcome new members to come along. MG
