The Rector’s Letter

During the interregnum, the Rector's Letter has featured letters and articles from a number of contributors.
This month, the letter comes from Alison Longman,
Church Warden of St John The Baptist Church, Barnack

A NEW PRIEST ARRIVES!

Yes, after two and a half years of interregnum, the parishes of Barnack, Bainton and Ufford are set to welcome our new Anglican priest. The Reverend Margaret Venables has been appointed Priest in Charge (on a house-for-duty basis), and will be moving into the Rectory in Barnack during January 2006. Currently, Canon Venables is the Rector of Campton, Clophill and Haynes and Rural Dean of Shefford in the St Alban’s Diocese.

On Tuesday, 31 January 2006, a licensing service will be held in Barnack church, starting at 7.30pm. Everyone is very welcome to attend: the event is most certainly not limited to those who make up the regular congregations. Bishop Ian will conduct the service, and Margaret’s licence will be for a period of five years in the first instance. After the formal proceedings, there will be an opportunity to meet, greet and socialise in a less structured manner. The Social Committee in Barnack has agreed, very kindly, to organise light refreshments at the school, and (once again), we would be pleased if as many people as possible would come along.

This piece would be far from complete without a little more information about Margaret herself. For many years, she lived and worked in the west country, and taught English and Theatre Studies at the Somerset College of Art and Technology in Taunton. In 1989, Margaret was ordained deacon in the Diocese of Bath and Wells, and priest in 1994. Her move to Haynes (south of Bedford) came in 1997.

In recent years, Margaret has found herself getting to know our area well. She is widowed, with three children and three grandchildren, and much of her family is living locally. This fact played a significant part in her decision to apply to come to our benefice. The other key factor was a desire to ‘downsize’ her current, very considerable, responsibilities in her present post, leaving a little more time to pursue interests such as studying for an MA in Spirituality, through Sarum College.

I have met Margaret now on a number of occasions, as have others connected with our three churches. It is clear to me that she is full of energy and enthusiasm for what lies ahead, and that her ministry will be hugely positive for not only the Anglican worshippers in our villages, but for the community as a whole. She is looking forward to strengthening links once more with Barnack school, and will soon become a familiar presence in our midst. We receive her warmly, and look forward to assisting and supporting her in the coming years.

Historical Information and stories about the Villages

Does anyone have any interesting information about the local villages which they would like to share with other residents? It might be some facts about the history of Ufford, Barnack, Southorpe, Pilsgate Ashton or Bainton; or stories about past events which happened in there.
Please send these to the editor for inclusion on the Parish News website.

Illustrations or photographs by local residents are also always welcomed.

Music at the Millstone Inn
There will be no session in January as the first Tuesday is too close to the holiday season. The next session is on Tuesday February 7th at the Millstone Inn. Doors open 7.30pm for a 8pm start. Admission is free! Come along to sing or play or just to spectate! See www.acousticsessions. co.uk.

Grateful thanks
from St John the Baptist Church
The delightful smell of hot mince pies, mulled wine and soup filtered through the village hall as visitors browsed round the stalls at the Christmas Market. A smiling Father Christmas greeted the children and listened carefully to their Christmas wishes. This year over £1,000 was raised for St. John the Baptist Church. Thank you to everyone who helped to make it a success.

Church Cleaning
Twice a year we put out the call to all willing helpers to reach those parts of the church that need the use of high ladders and brushes with very long handles. Please come to church prepared to undertake a high clean on Sunday, January 15th following the morning service. This will be a major clean of the whole church. We also wish to take this opportunity of thanking all those of you who regularly clean the pews and the floor. Keeping this beautiful building looking pristine is no easy task and your efforts are very much appreciated. Thank you from St John Baptist Church Social Committee.

Ufford Carol Service
This is to be held at 3pm New Year’s Day 2006 All welcome. Refreshments following the service.

The Good News Van
The Good News Van team wishes everyone in all the villages a Happy New Year. The van will be at Margaret Durdey’s house 12 Canon Drive, Barnack on Tuesday January 17th from 10.30 until 12noon as usual. As always, everyone from all the villages is most welcome to come for a cup of coffee or tea and a chat and browse through the books, tapes and videos if you so wish. Do come and bring a friend.

Bainton & Ashton Buttercross Club

Our December Christmas Party was another great occasion enabling over 50 villagers to get into the Christmas spirit. Delicious food, mulled wine and excellent entertainment was followed by carol singing. Thanks once again to Matthew Hardy, Kitty Hardy and Sarah Fancourt for their talented performances. Sarah and Kitty read an extract from Charles Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol’ - a very popular choice and beautifully performed, and Matthew managed to get his tongue successfully around the words from Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘Major General’ from the Pirates of Penzance. We were all impressed that he also managed to recount the tale of the snake in the hissing pit without mishap! Thank you all again for entertaining us so well. Thanks also to Sheila Bratley for accompanying the Carol singing. ‘We raised in the region of £120 for our annual charities - thanks to all who contributed.
There isn’t a meeting in January, but February 1st 2006 at 7.45pm we will be holding our AGM, so please come along and let us know what you would like included in next season’s programme. MG

Christmas bingo
This year the BSA’s Christmas bingo night raised over £200 for the school. It was a great night with lots of fun all round. Thank you to everyone all who came along and to all those who donated raffle prizes and mince pies.

An exciting year for the BSA
2006 is set to be a busy fundraising year for the BSA. We have plenty of new and different events planned as well as all the traditional ones, such as the fun run and beetle drive. Look out for news of the forthcoming 50/50 sale, seroc evening and race night.

Barnack Wildlife Watch Club

At the time of writing we had not embarked on our winter excursion to Swaddywell nature reserve near Helpston, but it promises to be a fun-filled afternoon. We have lots of exciting meetings arranged for 2006, starting with ‘Birds in winter’ in January: Foxes meet on 13th, Badgers on 20th. We’ll be looking at how birds manage to survive the cold and making some special bird food and feeders. In February we’re holding a special willow and rush weaving workshop with Sue Kirk, a well-known local artist.
For more information about Barnack Wildlife Watch Club contact Jayne Lillywhite on 755527.

Barnack Bowls Club
The winners of the December 200 Club maxi draw were:
No 73 Bill Womersley £50
No 29 Diane Lunn £30
No 45 Brian Barton £20
No 54 Trevor Goodwin £10
Thank you everyone for your support of the 200 Club during 2005 which helped to augment the funds of the Bowls Club by £1000.
As we are about to start a new year, members are reminded that subscriptions for 2006 are now due and are £24 for 12 months and £13 for 6 months. New members are, of course, more than welcome and you do not have to be a member of the Bowls Club in order to support the 200 Club. It is a good way to help ensure that one of the village amenities continues to flourish.

Thanks from James Chadwick
Many thanks to all those who sent me good wishes before the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Finals. The winners were a 6-piece band called Bodega. It was a fantastic opportunity for me to play at The Sage in Gateshead and I had a brilliant evening.

The Carpet Bowls Club

We meet every Tuesday afternoon (2.30pm - 4.30pm) and every Thursday evening (7.30pm - 9.30pm).
We hope to hold the annual Singles Competition on Tuesday afternoon, 24th January 2006, and the Pairs Competition on Tuesday afternoon 21st February 2006. These are ‘fun’ competitions and will be followed by tea as usual.

Parish Worship Course
The Reverend William Burke of Castor has been teaching this course, the details of which were, I think, made known to PCC members, but perhaps not to the wider congregation. I have been attending these and have found them instructive and helpful. There are six further sessions in the New Year, beginning on January 15th. The session begins at 7.00pm and lasts a little over an hour. If anyone would like to join me, or would like to look at the syllabus, do please contact me on 740347. Elizabeth Young.

Barnack Methodist Chapel
Many thanks to all who attended our December Coffee Morning and Cake Stall. The sales of Christmas puddings and mincemeat and mince pies helped to swell the total raised to £139.65.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support during the past year and to wish you all a very happy and prosperous new year. There will not be a Cake Stall and Coffee Morning in January and we therefore look forward to tempting you again at 10.30 on Saturday, 4 February 2006.

PARISH COUNCIL REPORTS AND NOTICES

Ufford Parish Council Meetings November and December 2005

Day and time of meetings: To encourage residents` participation, meetings were held on Saturday mornings as an experiment. This has not proved convenient for residents. It is hoped that meetings will revert to the 2 nd Wednesday in the month.

Parish Clerk: After many years serving the village Ken Waller retired as Parish Clerk in June 2005. He very kindly agreed to remain as Finance Officer whilst a new Clerk was recruited. An offer has been made to a qualified Clerk, who it is hoped will be in post from January 2006. Ufford Parish Council should like to thank Ken for all his years of service to the village.

Code of Conduct:The Parish Council regrets that on several recent occasions it has been unable to fulfil its role as a statutory consultee in planning matters. This situation has arisen where councillors have interests that might prejudice a decision. Examples of such interests would be adjoining properties or friendships. Consequently a Parish Plan will be undertaken in 2006 to document future village developments. This is effectively a more detailed Village Design Statement (VDS). The Parish plan provides statutory planning guidance whereas the VDS is only supplemental planning guidance i.e. it is not enforceable.

Car parking in Main Street and on the hill: Parish councillors have received many complaints regarding dangerous parking. There have been several near misses on the hill and large vehicles such as farm machinery have been unable to turn out of Walcot Road and pass down Main Street. Residents have been very tolerant during all the building work in the village. The relevant authorities have been contacted to assist in managing the safety hazard.

Parish precept: The draft budget was discussed in detail & adopted. There will be a small increase in the precept to cover the increased cost of insurance and the new Clerk.

Village Environment: Residents will have noticed the new Main Street bus shelter. The play equipment is complete although the replacement boundary hedging is still in progress. Work will continue next year to secure the playing field for children, together with additional wildlife planting.

Village walk: Residents are invited to walk off the seasonal excesses at Swaddywell Pit 2pm Thursday December 29 th .courtesy of Langdyke Trust. Parking is available on site following the track. Walkers access is via the footpath leading eastwards from King Street.

Barnack Parish Council Report December
The monthly meeting took place on December 12th in the village hall.
The installation of the monopole at Pilsgate has been refused. Two building applications have been received, the first being the erection of a house at Kiona, Wittering Road and secondly a first floor extension at Steeple Cottage. Mr I Crowson is to be thanked for his contribution towards the repair of the stone cemetery shed.

The council agreed to support Helpston Parish Council with a letter being sent to our M.P. regarding the ‘rat running’ through our villages. Cross Keys to be contacted to see if any progress has been made with lighting for the garage area and the alleviation of flooding in the same area on Orchard Road. It was agreed to support The Old Stackyard as the name for the new development in Pilsgate.

The Chairman and Clerk are to attend a training session on the Code of Conduct and the chairman and one councillor to attend a Rural Policing Workshop in January. Councillor training for all local councillors has been arranged in Ufford on 17th January. The new burial fees have been approved, together with revised rules for the cemetery.

The full minutes of the meeting are displayed on the notice boards around the village and on the website at www.barnackparishcouncil.org. The next meeting will be held on January 9th 2006 at 7.30p.m. All are welcome.

News from around the Diocese

Bishop Ian writes

New year - new hopes

We rightly look forward in anticipation to a new year. Whether we make resolutions or not, we hope that it will bring good news and provide an opportunity for us to fulfil our visions and our dreams.

In the diocese we shall be considering what it means to respond to God’s passion for his world by being worship-centred. We shall consider together how our worship can inspire us to be shaped by God’s mission, develop our gifts in his service, and make the world a different place in his name.

This year Bishop Frank and I will be working with our colleagues to help us all to explore these issues. We hope to make the worship in every church a source of inspiration and encouragement, because it is the place where we encounter the living God. A series of meetings across the diocese in Lent, as well as our regular visits to churches and deaneries, will be occasions to think about these issues.

In doing so we shall take our inspiration from the one who entered our world, and through his son Jesus Christ sought to share his passion and to transform the world he had created.

My own Christmas celebrations this year have been transformed by our recent trip to Bethlehem where Jesus was born. We visited the maternity hospital and stood beside the cot of a new baby, born with all the facilities of a well equipped modern maternity unit. It was a deeply moving and significant moment. It was, however, made more poignant because in order to visit the hospital and the Church of the Nativity we had to pass through the nine metre wall which now encircles Bethlehem.

For some in the Holy Land it is a means of security, but for the Palestinian residents of Bethlehem it is effectively a prison. The restrictions placed upon the internationally renowned Director of the hospital, and others, reminded us that the message of the Prince of Peace is still desperately needed two thousand years after his birth. St Paul spoke of this child as, “our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility ... that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace”.

I hope that this year our worship may increasingly inspire us to follow his example and teaching in breaking down the walls of hostility in our communities and our world, so we may see his vision realised and hostility brought to an end. If it helps us to do that then we will truly have been inspired by God’s passion for the world.

+ Ian
Bishop of Peterborough

Unity is part of a greater purpose
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity runs from 18 - 25 January. We should use it to ‘look more at our Lord’, says Revd Giles Godber, Ecumenical Officer for the Diocese:
“Three things seem to belong together: unity with fellow-Christians, concern for mission, and renewal of the church’s life. When we are looking more at our Lord and less at ourselves, we draw closer together, we seek to obey him and our church life is affected.”
Let’s use the 2006 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity to look more at our Lord. Materials are available from Churches Together in Britain and Ireland. Either visit their website, www.ctbi.org.uk or call CTBI Publications on 01733 325002.
