PARISH CHURCHES - WEEKLY SET SERVICES & EVENTS:
All are welcome at any of our Services.
Morning Prayer will be said at 8.30 am at St John’s Barnack on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and on Thursday at 7.00am.
A Service of Prayer for Peace and Justice will be said in St Mary’s Bainton at 9.00am on Tuesdays, followed by coffee.

Children’s Church: Children’s Church meets on the 1st, 2nd and 4th Sun of every month, during the service. Children of all ages are welcome.
Family Services: A Family Service is held in St John’s Barnack on every 3rd Sunday. This service is specially for families and their children and is not a communion service.
The Children’s Society
Another year has gone by and the months seem to come round more quickly than ever – could this be a sign of getting older! Here we are in 2010 and it is time for the opening of the boxes which some of you hold for your loose change. Last year I banked on your behalf £613.04, which was almost £75 more than the previous year. The money we raise goes to help children like Ben who ran away from home to escape years of physical abuse from his stepmother: “I was living in a car park when The Children’s Society found me” says Ben. “I found it hard to open up at first but now I trust them. They got me into a foster home. It’s not the same as having a real family but at least I’m not afraid any more. For the first time, I feel I can tell my dad what happened to me”.
Our children and grandchildren are so important to us that it is hard to realise there are young people like Ben who do not have this advantage. We have to be grateful that there is an organisation willing to help these children but without your support this would not be possible.

Village Ladies’ Group
Everyone had a most enjoyable evening at our Advent Celebration on Tuesday 24th of November; the speakers delighted us with poems, verse and song. Ray Jarvis, on the organ, accompanied us with a selection of carols. We had a variety of delicious food and may we say a big thank you to all those people who contributed to make it a successful evening. We made £127-00 for our charity the East Anglian Air Ambulance, thank you all for your generosity.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday the 26th of January at Ufford Village Hall at 7.45pm there will be a representative from Shaws coaches who will give us a talk and perhaps some ideas for the coming year, you are very welcome to come and join us.
Tuesday the 23rd of February is our evening meal out we will be discussing this at our January meeting, if you have a favourite place that you like to eat please tell us about it. Tuesday the 23rd of March is our A.G.M and we will have someone from the East Anglian Air Ambulance come and collect our contributions to their charity. We start at

Help for Heroes Thanks
My grateful thanks to all of the people who supported the coffee morning on Tuesday the 24th November at the acres community hall. Due to all of the hard work by Val Dawson and helpers plus donations, we managed to raise the magnificent sum of £603 to help the brave people who risk their lives everyday to help protect us and other countries. More support for help the hero’s would have been even better. Rose Porter
St. Dunstan’s Coffee Morning
I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ all those who either donated to or came to my coffee morning in aid of St. Dunstan’s home for Service men and women who are blinded in armed combat. The sum of £102 was raised and I know the proceeds will be put to very good use. Jane Joy

Buttercross Club
Those of us who heard Louise Marsh’s account of how she came to set up the Evergreen Care Trust counted themselves extremely privileged that such a unique organisation exists in the Stamford area. Louise’s career as a nurse has taken her from the Australian outback to Scotland and finally to Stamford; her strong sense of duty and obligation to provide a service for the older, vulnerable members of society made her decide to exchange paid employment for voluntary work and her efforts in recent years have produced a large body of 180 volunteers who are involved in catering, cleaning and home support for the elderly. Her enthusiasm and conviction for her work are an inspiration to us all and new volunteers are always welcome.
There will be no meeting in January but our AGM will be held on Wednesday, 3rd February 2010 at 7.30pm; come along and find out some of the plans in store for next year. Meanwhile, a Very Happy New Year to all our members and friends! JJ

Now that we have had a little time to recover from the sad and untimely death of Bob (Steer) the family and I would like to send our very grateful thanks to all those who gave us sympathy, kindness and support during the time of his illness and following his death last September. Mat, Kayley, Amanda and I are extremely grateful to you all and also for the many more who came to Bob’s funeral and so generously donated to Macmillan Nurses. I can now say that a total of £348.50 was collected and I am sure this money will be welcomed in supporting other families facing the loss of their loved ones. Again many thanks to you all. Line Dancing or Pilates Instructor Wanted in Bainton
“Are you interested in running a Line Dancing or Pilates class in Bainton Reading Room on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening? Perhaps know someone who could?
The active ladies and gents of Bainton would very much like to take part in classes but at the moment have no instructor.
Or maybe you would like to take part in a more leisurely pastime by organising something like a poetry reading or drama group for those evenings. Elaine Ward on Stamford 740323 would be very pleased to hear from you if you have a regular evening class you would like to organise in the Bainton Reading Room.
The Reading Room celebrates its Centenary this year and plans with a literary theme are being made for a week-end in May. Everyone will be welcome to join in the events.”

By popular demand the Wright family will again be making Coarse Cut Seville Orange Marmalade, a 1lb jar for £1.50 or 6 jars for £8. Please call 740929 to order. Barnack Methodist Chapel
Our final Coffee Morning of the year held on Saturday, 5 December was a great success due to our extra Christmas fare and gifts. The sum raised was £264.65, so thank you very much everyone who came and supported us.
There will not be a Coffee Morning in January as we are sure that you are all still eating up Christmas cake and mince pies but we hope to see you again on the first Saturday in February, 6 February.
The Royal British Legion
I am so pleased to tell you that the total raised this year , from the sale of poppies for The Royal British Legion, was £3,309.47.
An increase of approximately £650 on last years figure and ,in view of the current financial situation , quite amazing.
However it also demonstrates the public acute awareness of the situation in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Barnack W.I. Annual Meeting
Our outgoing President, Adrienne Collins reported on a very successful year, but one in which we had been greatly saddened by the death of Jill Miller, who had been such a stalwart member of Barnack
W.I.s.
Reports were received from our secretary, Janet Duff, and our treasurer, Val Stratton. We were reminded of the new initiatives started this year, the book club, the long and short walks and the memories of World War II. Other longstanding events such as the luncheon club, and the very varied programme of outings had continued as before. Adrienne reminded us of our successes, Sue Jarman had won the County Bowls competition, our quiz team had won both in the spring and the autumn, and the school banner, made by Margaret Broadbelt with supporting wood and brass work by Brian Dailey was dedicated at the school in November by Bishop Frank. Adrienne thanked everyone who had worked hard to make 2009 such a good year. The rest of the committee were in turn thanked by Jill Unsworth. Next year the officers will be, Mary Boyall President, Liz Young Vice-President, Barbara Knights secretary and Val Stratton treasurer. After the business meeting Sandra Jones described how she prepared a range of delicious Christmas party food. Her talk led to many questions and requests for recipes after which she was thanked by Sheila Berrill. We then enjoyed mulled wine & buffet prepared by Sandra, when we were able to marvel at her skill as we sampled the menu she had described earlier. Barnack Baptist Church
Barnack Baptist Church meets in Barnack School Hall each Sunday at 10-30 am, you will receive a warm welcome. We operate a crèche and Sunday school classes, drinks and cake are served after each service. In January we will be starting a series called “faith explored” Each Sunday we will be looking at different aspects of the Christmas faith. This will be followed up each Wednesday evening with a discussion group where people can come along for a glass of wine or juice, dessert and coffee in a relaxed atmosphere and discuss what it means to be a Christian. This is a good opportunity for anyone who wishes to explore faith, to return to faith or to refresh their. All welcome. Graham Dunn 749198
Youth Club
Youth Club will start again on Friday 8th January in Barnack Village Hall from 7-30 pm to 9-00 pm. Youth Club is open to all young people aged 11-16 in school years 7-11. Come along for fun, chat, tuck shop, craft, Wii, dance mat, table tennis, pool, air hockey and team games. You can join on the night. Subs 50p. Youth Club is run by Barnack Baptist Church but is open to all, you do not need to be part of the Baptist Church to attend. Little Lambs – Baby & Toddler Group
Little Lambs is open to all carers and children aged 0-5 years. We like babies – you don’t have to be a toddler to come! We meet each Tuesday at 10-00 am during term time in Barnack Village Hall. There are lots of toys and activities. There is a snack time including coffee and cakes for carers. The first meeting of the New Year will be on Tuesday 05 January when we will be planning our New Year night out. (without children!)
TNT
TNT meets each Thursday from 10-30 to 12-00noon in the Village Hall for a chat, games and activities. There’s a lot to do if you are feeling active: table tennis, pool table, Wii (computer) games, crafts and board games or just sit and enjoy a friendly chat and cakes with freshly brewed coffee or tea. We’ll also have occasional local walks and some short talks and demonstrations, all depending on what the people who come along feel they would enjoy.
TNT enjoyed a very active Christmas with a Christmas lunch and some of our members taking part in the Charity Concert. There is a warm welcome for everyone. £1 a week.

We are now starting afresh with our new season for the 200 Club and so all members are reminded that the subscription for 2010 is now due. The amount is still £24 for the 12 months but it can be paid in two instalments of £13 if that is preferred. We do hope that everyone will continue to support the 200 Club as it is vitally important to help pay the expenses of keeping the rinks in the good condition for which they are renowned.
If you are not already a member of the 200 Club, please do give it your consideration – you do not have to be a member of the Bowls Club itself but you will be helping to maintain one of the amenities of the village. We are not asking for something for nothing as everyone in the 200 Club stands an equal chance of winning one of 3 prizes each month. Barnack Pre-School
Pre-School has had a very festive feel during the whole of December. The children have been at their most creative, making not only cards, but also some beautiful decorations for their pretty Christmas tree.
There was an enjoyable a visit to Barnack Church, where the children helped Canon Margaret put together The Nativity display, before she told them the Christmas story. They all got the chance to ring the Church bell (which is no mean feat for a three or four year old!), and had a great time exploring all corners of the Church in search of foil stars. Singing has proved a particularly popular activity this month, with some enthusiastic renditions of Christmas songs – the favourite one being about eating lots of Christmas pudding!
And on the last day of term the children enjoyed their Christmas Party. There were lots of party games, as well as a performance of The Nativity, and a very exciting delivery from Father Christmas! We now look forward to welcoming some new additions to the Pre-School this coming term, and are sure they will settle in very quickly. Barnack Pre-School Tel: 01780 740265

Parish Council Notices
Ufford Parish Council Meeting December 8th 2009
1 The gate at Southey Woods car park was re-opened on November 21st and will be open on Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 4pm for a trial period of 3 months. This facility depends entirely on volunteer wardens and more wardens are needed, particularly to shut the gate. Ideally the Forestry Commission would like to devise a rota so that volunteers would be called upon infrequently, perhaps once a month. Please let one of your parish councillors know if you would like to volunteer.
2 A permissive footpath is being created between the Granary/Willow Brook Farm and the entrance to Castor Hanglands and from there to the proposed new bridle way leading to Southey Woods. Starting at the Granary car park at 10.30, two walks for all the family are being organised, one on December 31st and one on January 3rd. Farmhouse breakfasts will be available from 9am and hot lunches on return –pre-booking is advised.
3 The Langdyke Trust`s New Year`s Day Walk will be in Castor Hanglands. Meet at the double-gated car park entrance on Ailsworth Road at 1.45pm. Families are welcome and well behaved dogs on leads. The walk is on tracks and grassland, but is not too muddy, but wellies or strong shoes are recommended. This walk will be led by Frieda.
4 The next meeting will be on Tuesday January 12that 7.30 in the Village Hall.
Southorpe Parish Council
A meeting of the Parish council was held on 30 November 2009 and was attended by all Parish Councillors, the Clerk & David Over.
Village Matters
A further traffic survey has now been undertaken by the Highways Department at Peterborough City Council. Traffic speeds were recorded at the southern end of Main Street at an average of 39 mph, with some 67% of drivers exceeding the speed at which they could be prosecuted. The City Council have offered to improve the road markings and signage at the southern entrance to the village. Whilst the Parish Council are pleased to see the City Council at last acknowledge that there is a traffic problem in the village, they don’t believe that this will have a significant impact on traffic speed and so will be requesting the installation of speed activated signs.
Councillor David Over supports this and will also be contacting the Highways department to seek some immediate action.
The possibility of establishing a pond within the parish continues to be researched by Jack Robinson; discussions have been held with English Heritage and the Walcot estate to identify a potential site.
British Telecom have advised that the consultation process on the removal of the telephone kiosk will end on 19 December 2009.

Helene Carr has now stood down from the Parish Council. She is thanked for her service to the village.
