The
Rector’s Final Letter
|
Rector: The Reverend G B Austen M.A. M.Phil. KHT
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford, Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET
Telephone: Stamford 740234 E-mail: austenglobalnet.co.uk
If my calculations are correct, this is the 188th letter
I have written for this publication in the course of the last fifteen
and a half years, since we arrived here in December 1987, when my very
first letter was published. That makes a lot of words – roughly 100,000
to my reckoning!
I dare say the response among the readership of the Parish News has
been a mixed one: some people have probably never read any of my articles,
and will be entirely contented not to have done so; some may even have
read all of them! Most will have at least glanced at them from time
to time. Plenty of you have been kind enough to say that they find them
a stimulating read, which has always been my intention. When you offer
opinion pieces, as these tend to be, you cannot guarantee that everyone
will agree with you, but you can at least hope to spark some thoughts,
to open up a debate.
I have been looking at the text of my December 1987 letter. I referred
to the fact that ‘As you read this I and my family will be in a peculiar
kind of limbo’. Nothing changes: we are now, as I write in preparation
for the mid-June copy deadline, in a limbo again. Our departure draws
ever nearer, but there are still many things to do. Knowing that you
are shortly to be leaving a home is like an extended bereavement before
the death occurs. It is a strange time.
In December 1987 I spoke of ‘sorrow and expectancy’ with the passing
of the old and the coming of the new. Again, nothing changes: it is
indeed with sorrow that I shall soon cease to be Rector of Barnack with
Ufford and Bainton, but with the stimulating prospect of a new phase
of life shortly to begin. I shall continue to be a priest, as I explained
a few months ago in this column, but in a non-stipendiary capacity.
Furthermore, Heather and I will, for the first time in our married lives,
be living in our own house, rather than in a tied cottage – however
pleasant that cottage might be. I shall be teaching full time, which
I find rewarding and fulfilling; and a great many priests have, through
the years, found teaching and a priestly vocation a fitting combination.
I also wrote in December 1987 that ‘Heather and I very much want to
be your friends, and for you to feel that the Rectory is a place of
welcome and fellowship.’ Others must be the judges of the latter half
of the sentence, but certainly we feel that we have made many friends,
and we have tried our best to fulfil the hopes and intentions we expressed
all those years ago. We shall take away with us many memories of relationships
made and fellowship shared.
I asked for your love and support for us in December 1987 as we began
our time in these villages, and I ask it now as we leave to begin a
new stage of our lives. In turn we assure you of our affection and our
prayers for these communities in the years ahead. Farewell and God bless
you all, whatever the future brings.
Fr. Glyn Austen

Terry Young
Liz, Caroline and Ali would like to thank most sincerely the many
friends and neighbours who sent messages of sympathy following Terry’s
death in May, and also to those who came to his funeral. We
hope to respond individually to you all in due course. We have been
overwhelmed by the support and care we have received from many people,
a very great help to us at a sad time. Thank you all very much indeed.
Open Meeting for the Parish Churches
On Monday 7th July, there will be a meeting for the PCC members of
all three churches, to discuss the future of the leadership of the

Pip Clements, Rural Dean, will be present to answer your questions.
The meeting will be held in the Wilfrid Wood Hall in Barnack at 8pm.
Please come along if you have any interest in the way our benefice
will operate after Father Glyn’s departure. It is important to show
the depth of feeling and commitment in the village.
British Red Cross
The collection in Pilsgate during the recent Red Cross Week raised
£46.28. I would like to thank everybody who contributed
for their generosity. Ria Sutcliffe
Bypass
You may have seen the recent correspondence in the Stamford Mercury
regarding this issue, and the desire of some Stamford residents to
route such a road just one field away from Pilsgate and within sight
and sound of Barnack. There will be many detrimental effects to life
in four of the five villages, both anticipated and unforeseen. My
letters outline some of the possible impact.
However, it is not wise for one person to make too much of an issue,
as it will be said that few people have that opinion. I would appeal
to more residents to write regarding any issues to both the newspapers
and City or county councillors. You have nothing to lose by writing,
but much to lose if you don’t. This is not the only issue; there is
the Peterborough Local Plan, the planning application on Uffington
Road, the Industrial development proposed by Burghley Estates on Barnack
Road...
If you would like more information to help you compose a letter about
the bypass issue, please contact me, and I can supply this, including
the response of Peterborough City Council. St.John Burkett, 740523.
22, Bainton Road.

Everyone enjoyed our visit to the beautiful gardens at the Walnuts in
Kings Cliffe. This was a perfect way to spend a May evening.

Ufford Art Society
We would like to thank everyone who supported us both at the preview
and the exhibition over the Village Weekend. It was a great success,
with eleven pictures sold. It has given encouragement to all of the
artists attending our Thursday morning classes. If you would be interested
in painting, come along and join us. Ring Sally on 740594 for more information.

Parish Council Meeting
This month’s meeting of Barnack Parish Council was held on
Monday June 9th in the Wilfrid Wood Hall.
Some of the items discussed were as follows:-
Vehicle activated signs are to placed on the B1143 later this financial
year. A road show is to visit the village on June 13th to publicise
the probable distribution of green wheelie bins in place of the green
boxes. These will be emptied fortnightly.
The standard of the mowing of verges through out the villages is a concern
and is being addressed.
Planning permission has been granted for three applications and two
new applications have been received.
A successful meeting was held on June 2nd to discuss the Parish Plan.
Approximately 60 residents attended and a small group volunteered to
help write the plan.
Mr Ling from Burghley Estates addressed the meeting. He informed those
present of four current development plans in the parish, these being-
Pilsgate Road behind Unity Cottages.
Pilsgate Old Stackyard - conversion of farm buildings into five dwellings.
Burghley Brew House to provide extra visitor attraction and education
facility.
Barnack Limes Farm - Five dwellings may be erected on land at rear of
farmyard.
There is concern in the village about the disturbance caused by groups
of youths. It was stressed that it was important for all residents to
report any incident that they witness to the police. The direct dial
phone number to PC McCallum is 07693 078344 (when on duty). Insp. Megicks
from the Western Sector will be present at the next meeting to talk
about policing in this area.
The full minutes of these meetings are displayed on the village notice
boards. The next meeting will be on July 14th at 7.30pm.

30 members and 7 visitors from Helpston and Northborough Institutes
attended the June meeting.
After conducting the general business of the meeting, Mr N. Allen gave
a talk on ‘The work of the Woodland Trust’. The talk was illustrated
with some lovely slides from all over the countryside.
Mrs Edna Tongue gave the vote of thanks. Delicious refreshments were
then served and enjoyed.
The raffle was won by June Woollard and the Competition by Jessie Goodacre,
with June Woollard and Pat Barton as second and third respectively.
The next meeting will be held in the Wilfrid Wood Hall, Barnack, on
Tuesday July 8th at 7.30pm. Mr John Bennett will speak about the ‘Floating
Church at Home Fen’. All are welcome.
Barnack Bowls Club
The winners of the May 200 Club Draw were:
No 9 Mrs Peggy Sindall £25; No 43 Mr Martin Jackson £15;
No 14 Mr Malcolm Cullingworth £10.
Barnack Village Hall
After being involved with the Hall for almost 20 years I have retired
as chairman and Graham Dunn has taken this post.
At the AGM last month many friends in the village surprised me with
a party and also presented me with a magnificent garden seat and two
bay trees in garden pots. To all those who were there and were responsible
for this, may I say how much Marie and I appreciated the event and the
gifts.
At the same time I wish to acknowledge the help and support you have
all given me during this time. Thank you very much indeed. Bill

It’s A Fact, Barnack Cricket Club Quiz Is
Good For Your Health!
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s our Roger with his knickers on
over his tights again. Can it really be possible to laugh so much? It
really does get funnier each week.
Did you know that it’s a proven fact that laughter is the best tonic
for you, unless you prefer a gin in it of course.
On Sundays from 8.30pm – 10.30pm you’ll find great beer, great company,
great jokes, a great night out! Come as a team of 4, or join a friendly
team there, for a truly fabulous evening that will set you up for the
rest of the week. And cash money prizes!

Barnack & Ufford Fund Six New Fishing
Boats In The Philippines
The 2003 Christian Aid week raised £656.45 in Barnack and £195.55
in Ufford. Thanks to all our collectors and everyone who donated this
year. Christian Aid helps some of the world’s poorest people in over
60 countries to improve their own lives, helping also to combat the
causes of poverty. It also takes action on ethical trade, world bank
and international monetary fund issues and cancellation of world debt
as these are some of the forces that keep the world’s poorest poor.
A letter recently received from Christian Aid has confirmed that last
year we raised enough money in our villages to buy six new and much
needed fishing boats in the Philippines, so well done everybody and
thank you on behalf of Christian Aid. J.I.B.

Bainton
And Ashton Family Day 2003 - July 6th
Just sit back and dream for a moment. You are sitting in a deck chair
on a glorious summer’s afternoon in one of the most beautiful gardens
around. You have just finished a delicious barbeque lunch and there
you are, ice cream in hand, enjoying the surroundings. A barrel organ
has just started to play, and this mixes well with the sound of children
laughing and people enjoying themselves. Close neighbours who you see
rarely enough to talk to properly, stop for a chat. You are pleased
with yourself as you have just won a bottle of wine on the tombola,
and are wondering what to do before the fun and games start with the
children’s races. There’s going to be a display soon by the local ballet
group, shall you wait for that, or try your hand at a game of skittles?
There again, you could stay where you are and have another ice cream.....
All of this could be yours! Dreams can come true! Just go along to Bainton
Family Day on 6th July in the gardens of Bainton House. The barbeque
starts at 1pm; the stalls open at 2.30pm; the fun goes on all afternoon.
Bring the family and friends if you like - you all deserve a break.
The collection for Robert Smith
This amounted to £345.00. After consultation with his wife it
was agreed that Robert would not enjoy a formal presentation and so
the money will be given to him privately.
Thank you to everyone who contributed so generously and to all who helped
with the collection. Renee Sumpter
Bainton & Ashton Buttercross
On June 4th our speaker was Mr Tim Appleton, Head Warden of Rutland
Water Nature Reserve. We were taken through the 26 years since work
at the reserves was first started. Colour slides illustrated how, by
the use of a great variety of clever planting and the creation of shallow,
protected waterways, more and more breeds of birds have been tempted
to settle there. The reserves are now renowned throughout the world.
Mr Appleton’s work does not end there. Each year, as a result of an
extensive international show, attended by enthusiasts and representatives
from many countries, thousands of pounds are raised for the benefit
of needy preservation sites worldwide.
July 2nd is the date for our ‘Glow Worm Vigil’. As the exact date depends
on the habits of glow worms, would those interested please phone a committee
member nearer the date. August is our ‘Family Boules Evening’ at Bainton
House, at 7.30pm. More details next month.
Christian Aid
The collection in Bainton and Ashton for Christian Aid raised £201.90.
Grateful thanks to Janette, Judith, Julie, Marjory and Sheila for collecting,
and to Bainton and Ashton residents for your generous donations to this
very worthwhile cause. Cheryl Buckley
