The Rector’s Letter

During the interregnum, the Rector's Letter will feature letters and articles from a number of contributors. This month, Roy Beck of Barnack has kindly submitted the following letter:

A clock winder’s lot
Ever given a thought to Barnack church tower clock? What makes it work? Is it electric? Does it run on batteries? An elaborate system of elastic bands? And how, more often than not, does it keep such first-rate time?
Well, the answer is rather a low tech one really. Believe it or not it runs on manpower. One manpower to be exact. Otherwise known as a clock winder. Each week he ensures that the church clock’s seven day movement and chime are fully wound and primed and the correct time meticulously set. This procedure, most usually, takes place on a Sunday morning.
A clock winder will collect the impressively hefty tower key from the vestry and purposefully make his way through the nave to the ancient wooden door at the base of the tower. There he noisily unlocks the door and switches on the tower lights to pierce the pitch darkness within. A clock winder will always keep the key with him, as to leave it in the lock would probably have him accidentally locked in the tower for a week! He pushes the old, groaning door inwards and is instantly greeted, particularly in wintry months, by a most unwelcoming ice-cold whistling blast from the uppermost reaches of the tower, sending shivers to his very core.
He starts his long, lonesome climb. The 1000-year-old stone spiral stairwell encases 40 well-worn and unforgiving stone steps, too narrow even for a handrail. These steps are most precarious, as over the centuries they have become worn and very uneven and extremely shallow in places. He stridently continues his journey aloft, climbing ever upwards, with the ancient walls screaming a thousand years of history at him. These very stone walls were constructed when the first crusaders captured Jerusalem; William of Normandy arrived with his Norman conquest; Vikings still marauded the globe. His faltering footsteps carry him to the first stage. He arrives at the Millennium belfry level. But he needs to go further.
He must negotiate a course around the enormous old bells and their taut, precise riggings, one bell half as old as the tower itself, to yet another set of ancient steps: a giant of a wooden ladder this time, well-worn and at least a couple of hundred of years old, reaches up to gut-churning heights to the loft above. Thankfully this has recently been overlaid now with a substantially safer but much less attractive 21st century aluminium facsimile. 16 more steps this time brings him to the clock platform itself. At this point, although not mandatory, it is usual for him to catch his breath before taking up the hefty winding handle. Then, steadying himself on the very narrow gantry, he locates the handle onto the clock cog and slowly and noisily winds the clock. It takes some 50 turns with cables running through pulleys to draw the heavy weight to the top of its travel. This winding action must then be repeated for the chime and its respective weight. Fine-tuning of the displayed time, if required, is then made by turning a very small cast iron lever against a small dial reference which, under huge torque, literally moves the giant clock hands around the face setting the precise time.
Then back down that ladder, through the bells and very gradually he wends his way back down those precipitous stone cold steps and into the welcoming and warm church below. He pulls shut the door with a clunk, locks it and returns the key safely to the vestry.
So, all done for another week. The clock movement ticks away peacefully like a beating heart within the very core of the tower itself, bringing it alive. A living Tower.
The clock winder can now rest assured that a total of 1,092 carefully pre-wound chimes will soothingly remind the exact moment in time to villagers on every hour of every day and night throughout the week, and that the old familiar church tower clock will continue displaying perfect time.
A Clock Winder

Notes from Southorpe Parish Council Meeting held 10 May 2004
Two objections had been received by Peterborough City Council to the proposed introduction of the 30mph speed limit, one of which was the police. The Parish Council will continue to try and reduce the speed limit. A survey will be carried out in the village to see what the villagers felt are acceptable traffic calming measures.
Two Councillors are meeting Squadron Leader Tony Walsh of RAF Wittering to discuss the low flying of aeroplanes over the village.
Since the finances looked quite healthy, it was suggested that the Parish Council should buy a wooden seat in memory of Reg Briers who died earlier in the month. Reg had lived in the village all his life and was very well respected. Also it was felt it would be useful to purchase some outdoor furniture to be used at the village picnic and bonfire party.
The Clerk had written to the Peterborough City Council regarding the state of two of the dykes in the village, the erosion of the verges and the lack of white lines on Heath Road.
The next Parish Council meeting will take place on 22 September at 7.30 pm at Rosemead Cottage.

Plea from Mrs Grant

Barnack Friendship Club - Cooks Urgently Needed
Barnack Friendship Club meets fortnightly between 10.30am - 2.30pm at the Acres Community Hall in Barnack.
About 25 to 30 members, aged 60+, meet for tea/coffee, games, company, talks, other activities and to enjoy a meal together.
We desperately need more people to join the catering teams, some younger people who would like to help in their community would be most appreciated.
If you enjoy cooking nourishing, traditional meals for your own family, you only have to multiply the quantities by 2 or 4 or 6 to cope with the demands of this new Club.
If you can spare even one Wednesday a month to be part of a 2-person ‘catering team’ we would be most grateful to hear from you. NO WASHING UP! Free meal for the cooks!
For more information, please contact Elaine Ward on 01780 740323 or Miriam Pullinger on 07970 282944.

Barnack Parish Council
Owing to the election, the A.G.M. and monthly council meeting is being held a week later than normal on June 21st and so there will be no report in this edition of the Parish News.
As most of you will be aware by now we have all received copies of the S. Lincolnshire Phone Book. The official reason for this is because we have a S. Lincs postal address.
It is advisable to keep your old book for reference and if enough complaints are received we shall hopefully in future be issued with the Peterborough edition.
If you phone 0800 833 400 and explain the position you should receive a complimentary copy of the Peterborough one.
It is also advisable to write to the address below to register a complaint.

Barnack Community Association
The AGM held on 17th May in the Village Hall was well attended by the Committee and Trustees. The Accounts were presented by Michael Perkins and adopted by the meeting. There were three retirements from the Committee - Frank James, Alan Rice and Sidney Tuck. They were all thanked for their contribution to the Association over many years and will be sorely missed. The following officers were re-elected for the coming year Chairman - Graham Dunn and Secretary - Barbara Knights. Ruth Harbinson and Patrick Knights are willing to remain on the Executive Committee. The General Committee will henceforth be called the ‘Council’, but their purpose will be unchanged - ie to monitor the actions of the officers and exec committee. After 20 years as Treasurer of the Association Michael Perkins has announced his retirement and Graham Dunn thanked him for his support - he has agreed to stay on temporarily until a successor is appointed. A revision of hire charges for the village hall has been undertaken and the charges will apply from September. They will be displayed on the notice board outside the village hall within a few weeks. Future dates - 28th September a Council meeting will be held in the village hall at 7.30pm and 16th October is the date for the Autumn Quiz Supper. An update on the purchase of the cricket field: since the AGM this is at last coming to fruition and will shortly be completed. The Association is now looking for a new Treasurer to replace Michael Perkins. This takes up very little time and Michael will be pleased to advise anyone who is considering putting themselves forward as to the amount of work involved. If you are interested in joining a friendly committee who have about three meetings a year, we should like to have you join us.

Christian Aid
To the residents of Barnack, Pilsgate and Southorpe, thank you once again to everybody who helped with the collection and everyone who made a donation. This year we collected £473.53. Sadly, this is a very disappointing result, £182.92 less than last year and the first time in 33 years that the amount has gone significantly down.

William Thomas Jones (Bill)
Sandra and Rachel would like to express their thanks to everyone in the villages who has supported them and to everyone for their kindness, cards and messages of sympathy following the sad loss of their much-loved husband and father Bill. Bill (68) was an active member of both the indoor and outdoor bowls clubs and was also a member of the Horticultural Show Committee. He loved Barnack and was an active and supportive member of the Barnack community in the seven years he lived in the village. Bill will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Barnack & District Horticultural Show 15th August 2004
It is trophy collection time again. Please could all last year’s trophy winners return their cups and awards to Pat Rubin at 1 Linden Close Barnack by the 30th June. If you are returning a trophy after that date please contact Sandra Jones on 740810.
It is not too late to volunteer to run a game or stall, sell programmes on the day or indeed to have your own stall. Please contact Pat Rubin on 740840. Your help will be much appreciated and will help ensure that this large village event runs smoothly.
Are you still thinking about entering? There are some new classes to enter this year in the section for children with a whole new section for those aged 8 and under. First time entrants to the Home Produce section will get the chance to compete for a new trophy, presented by the Simpole- Clarke Delicatessen in Stamford.
We look forward to receiving a record number of entries this year. Do not be shy - enter that class! You never know... you could be the winner.
As well as the Horticultural Show there will be a large Craft Fair in a big marquee on the field. The stallholders offer a wide range of crafts, from home made preserves, paintings and beauty products to pressed flowers and jewellery. All are local craftsmen and offer unique, high- quality items: some will be demonstrating their skill on the day.
In addition the family day will have the usual stalls such as tombola and carpet bowls, but there will also be an opportunity to try archery with the Bowmen of Rutland, to shoot your way out of the Mobile LaserForce Arena and ride a pony. As well as the usual bouncy castle there will be a mini mega slide, dinosaur shooting gallery and many other games to test your skills.
Happy Jazz will be playing throughout the afternoon with a magic show and balloon modelling show held during the afternoon. The highlight of the day for many will be the Battle of Britain Fly Past due to take place between 2 & 3pm.
Finally we look forward to welcoming you all on the 15th August from 9am if you are exhibiting and from midday until 4pm to visit the craft fair and family day.

Twenty members and friends, including seven from Wittering, enjoyed a Mystery Trip through Northamptonshire, continuing onto Huntingdon where tea was enjoyed at the beautiful setting of the Hartford Marina.

Safari Supper 2004
Another Safari Supper has been planned for Saturday 18th September. This event has successfully been running for many years now and is a fantastic opportunity for local villagers to get to know each other a little better and have a great evening’s fun at the same time.
In short, the supper is a progressive dinner in which participants move to new locations for each course of the meal. Each couple hosts two other couples for one course (a starter, main course or dessert) and travels to two other venues for the other two courses. Each course is of a fixed duration with changeovers occurring at pre-arranged times. Participants are advised of their first venue and informed of the course for which they are responsible two or three weeks before the actual date. Subsequent venues are kept secret in sealed envelopes and not revealed until the end of the first or second course as appropriate. If everything works out each participating couple will dine at three different locations with a total of 6 other couples. No two couples should meet twice in the same evening. The evening ends with a party at a venue yet to be decided, Barnack last year, but hopefully either in Ashton, Bainton, Southorpe or Ufford, or maybe at your house even if you are up for it. Logistically participants will be limited to those coming from one of these villages. Over 60 people took part last year and it is hoped to have the same number or more this year. You don’t have to be a Naked Chef type to participate in this evening, just join in and have some huge fun. Further details from Philip 01780 740785 or Mark 01780 740017.

Barnack Cricket Club Social Committee
The committee is currently planning some fantastically exciting social events over the summer months. Information on these events will be posted around the village, in the Parish News magazine and will also be available from the Cricket Club and the village Post Office.

Join us for a night to remember, Saturday 10th July at 7.30pm. Tickets are £3 in advance and £3.50 on the night including food. Bainton & Ashton Buttercross Club
Acupuncture was the subject of the talk at our June meeting, when Louise Lipman of the Broad Street Practice gave us a fascinating insight into the therapeutic use of this ancient treatment. She spoke with great enthusiasm about the many different ‘conditions’ that can gain benefit from acupuncture and we were invited to practice tracing the ‘meridian’ lines and trying the relaxation method.
Forthcoming events: the annual Family Day at Bainton House will be held on 4th July and the Buttercross Club will have a stall selling home made cakes, produce and plants. This is always very popular, so come along early! All those wishing to contribute produce, please bring it along with you on the day or contact Judith Morrice or any committee member beforehand. Our July meeting will be a visit to Grimsthorpe Castle followed by a supper at The Black Horse. Can all those who have booked to go liaise with their ‘driver’ regarding departure time and place.
The planned visit to Burghley Sculpture Park on 4th August has unfortunately had to be CANCELLED for this year, but the good news is that we shall be holding the ever popular Boules Evening in the grounds of Bainton House on the 25th August. Get together with some friends or family to form a team, or just come along on the evening - and have fun!
The speaker for our September meeting will be Philippa Massey on aspects of Stamford’s history - more details later. We always welcome new members or guests and meet at the Reading Rooms, Bainton on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.45pm unless otherwise stated. We look forward to seeing you. M.G.
