Pause for Though from Parish Priest:
Canon Margaret Venables
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford,
Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET
It is to be hoped that as the summer progresses we will
all have a little more time for leisure. The gardens don’t
need quite so much attention and even though the children
are home all day instead of being at school there isn’t
the insistent ring of the alarm clock to get everyone out
of the house on time. Hopefully, too, there will be some
fine weather to lounge in the garden with a good book - preferably
for me a good story.
Stories challenge us. They challenge us to take sides with
the characters. Who do I want to win or lose? Do I want the ‘baddies’ punished
or forgiven? Do I want the ‘goodies’ to be arrogant
or kind and generous? - and ,of course at a deeper level
the challenge too. What do the decisions I make have to say
about me? The writer may have set out to make one character
villainous and another heroic, do I share the writer’s
judgments? Do I agree with the underlying standards being
expressed?
These challenges exist whether in a Ladybird book, in an
Agatha Christie novel or in ‘Pilgrims Progress” and
they are important because what we read helps to shape us
and our opinions. I have read novels that I have remembered
for many years. Whoever forgets Jane Eyre’s marriage
to Mr Rochester? - it’s in the back of my mind every
time I say in a marriage service: ‘ if anyone knows
a reason why these persons may not be joined together in
Holy Matrimony, you are to declare it’. I remember,
too. my opinion of some of the male characters in Jane Austen’s
novels - as well as my real doubts about some of the assumptions
that underlie Joanna Trollope’s books. Then, too, there
are the moments that have real echoes - the moment in ‘ Wind
in the Willows’ when Mole unexpectedly returns to his
home: ‘it was good to think he had this to come to,
this place which was all his own, these things that were
so glad to see him again and could always be counted on for
the same simple welcome.’
Watching stories on television is never quite the same -
we are carried along by the narrative and often don’t
ponder on a deeper level. Just think how stories switch in
a matter of minutes in any of the soaps! Because we see an
actor interpreting the writer’s work, we are removing
the primary interpretation for ourselves. We don’t
ask the same questions.
There is a theory that one day we will stop reading books
- everything will be on computer!!! I hope that day never
comes and that my grandchildren will enjoy books for the
rest of their lives - as they certainly do now. I hope, too,
they will ask themselves the deeper questions as they read
or how else will they learn about good and evil and the wonder
of many different relationships?
Enjoy your summer reading!
Margaret

Thanks from Richard Hardy & Cancer Research UK
Richard Hardy from Bainton says thank you to everyone who has supported
the fundraising for his Great Wall of China challenge to raise
money for Cancer Research UK.
Richard left for China on Sunday 7th May as part of a 29 strong Cancer
Research UK group. He arrived in China on Monday afternoon and started
walking on the wall on Tuesday morning.
Over the next 6 days, Richard walked a total of 50 miles along the
Great Wall north of Beijing at Gubeikou, Jinshananling, Simatai,
Gangfan, Wuzoulou mountain, Black Dragon Pool Park and Mutianyu Pass,
finishing with 435 steps up ‘The stairway to heaven’.
“I was particularly keen to raise money for Cancer Research
UK and the fact that the challenge was in China had a special meaning
for me. During the trip I had time to reflect on the happy time we
spent in China as a family, 9 years before. I started raising funds
nearly a year ago, with various events such as a race night, quiz
night, ducking stool at the Stamford festival, an auction of promises,
a Gilbert & Sullivan Concert and the Wiki café on Saturday
mornings. I am grateful for the donations, sponsorship, support and
encouragement I have received from family and friends, without whom
I could not have raised so much money”.
From the 29 people participating in the challenge, more than £100,000
was raised for Cancer Research UK, of which Richard raised £7,540.

help the Red Cross to give hope to people in Crisis in the UK and
overseas. Ria Sutcliffe
Bainton And Ashton Family Day
The highlight of the village calendar is getting closer- yes, Family
Day is on 2nd July in the marvellous grounds of Bainton House. Everyone
from all the villages are welcome, so please come and bring friends.
Henman and Murray have kindly agreed to be out of Wimbledon by then,
even the World Cup organisers have agreed to leave this Sunday free
so they won’t clash with us. Once again, this is to be a real
fun, family occasion. All the usual stalls and sideshows will be
there, plus some new attractions. The local children will be invited
to enter a ‘design-a-flag’ competition: more details
will be put through all Bainton and Ashton doors. Whatever you do,
leave this date free and come along. Entrance is free, there’s
no need to join in anything if you don’t want to- just sit
in a deckchair with an ice cream and watch the children enjoy themselves.
Any queries, ring Tony Gowers on 740097. See you there!
Please Help
Can you help in some way at this summer’s Barnack & District
Horticultural Show? Please contact Bryan Lee on 740239 and help to
make the 2006 show a real winner.
Barnack Methodist Chapel
Once again, your support for our June Cake Stall and Coffee Morning
helped us to raise a further £129. 94 for our funds and we
thank you very much for your support. Our next Coffee Morning and
Cake Stall will be held on Saturday,
1 July, from 10 am to 11 am and we look forward to seeing you then.
Fairtrade products will also be on sale.
Barnack Bowls Club
The winners of the May 200 Club draw were:
No 59 Paul Buckley £25
No 12 Chris Stead £15
No 75 Bill Dunnakey £10
And for June
No 22 Mrs L Womersley £50
No 64 Christine Ford £30
No 69 Marie Harris £20
No 57 Alan Rice £10
Once again the Club’s June Gala was blessed with good weather
and 20 teams contested the event which was eventually won by the
home team of Brian Barton, Ann Butland, Steve and Pat Gyles. Excellent
refreshments were provided throughout the day by Christine Ford and
her band of helpers and the games were very ably started, finished
and scored by Clive Butland. The only fly in the ointment was that
one of the visitors fell and broke her wrist but she very nobly made
sure that her husband stayed on and skipped his team!
Christian Aid - Barnack
The house to house collection in Christian Aid week raised £863.78.
Many thanks to all the collectors for their continued support and
to everyone who made a donation.
Unfortunately we did not have a collection for Christian Aid in Bainton
and Ashton this year. Since Mrs C Buckley left the area, we do not
have an organiser for these villages. Would anyone like to volunteer?
If so I would be very pleased to hear from you. (Tel 740513)
Christian Aid helps to bring about a better life for poor communities
worldwide. They can only do it with our help. J Irving-Bell
Christian Aid - Ufford
I would like to thank all the residents of Ufford who gave so generously
in answer to this year’s Christian Aid Appeal, which totalled £237.93,
again an increase on last year’s total.
Also many thanks to all the collectors and to Ann & Derek Whiteman
for kindly offering to collect & bank the money whilst Ken & I
were in London due to his being hospitalised. Joan Waller
A Farewell to John Green
After more than 23 years (yes 23 years) dedicated service to Barnack
Primary
school, the majority of them in the capacity of Head Teacher, John
Green is
moving on, and to mark this momentous occasion we are going to be
holding an open afternoon at the school from 2:00pm on Friday 21st
July, the last day of term, where we hope many people (you?) will
come along to personally pass on good wishes.
This will be an opportunity to reflect, recognise and celebrate John’s
significant achievements. He has led the school through great change
and many successes over the years, making it one of the top primary
schools in the country.
You may know (some of you may be) former pupils, Staff, Governors,
during John’s 23 years, let them know he is leaving, invite
them up to the school on 21st July, let me know and I will invite
them. If you have any anecdotes on your encounters with John (or
stories you’ve heard!) then please tell me about them. I am
sure John will appreciate a few memory joggers during the afternoon!
While it will be a challenge, ideally John will have no idea what
we are up to, so if you have any anecdotes or people you would specifically
like me to invite then please give call on 740017 or email (mark(at)haines-eynon.freeserve.co.uk) Mark
Haines-Eynon, Chair of Governors
Open Fellowship
The meeting will be held on Wednesday 5th July at Hasty Bank and
on Thursday 20th July, usual times, when we hope to join with the
Methodist Circuit members at the Praise Meeting – venue to
be announced.
Beanie Babies
If anyone is a Beanie Baby collector, we have a large box of about
80 of these, which are surplus to present requirements. We can mail
or email a list of them to an interested party. Contact Jenny or
Derek Morris, Blue Boar House, Helpston Road, Bainton tel 740709,
or email derekvmorris@yahoo.com
Ufford Ladies
May 23rd saw Karen Clynch from the Peterborough Tourist Board give
a most informative and enlightening talk on the role of the Tourist
department. Karen gave us an insight into the many areas covered
by the board, from finding accommodation, information on local and
wider events covering the Peterborough and surrounding areas, dealing
with travel and theatre tickets, just to mention a few.
The meeting on July 25th will be a scone tasting evening at the home
of Jill Miller, Newe House, Ufford, starting at 7.15pm. There will
be a small charge toward our local charity, the St John Ambulance
Service, Stamford. If you enjoy a variety of scones in a pleasant
atmosphere, come and join us.
Bainton & Ashton (Monday to Friday) Newspaper Deliveries
By the time you read this, you will realise you have a new paper
boy in the villages - my cousin, Lewis Kirby (740694). I have enjoyed
delivering your papers round the villages for the last four years
and meeting many of you for an early morning chat in all sorts of
weather! Regretfully with school work and a harvest job, I am unable
to continue, and Lewis will take over. Thank you for your many kindnesses
over the years. Best wishes, Matt Hardy
Barnack Baptist Church
Taking us through the first half of the summer weeks we will be looking
at the teaching in the book of Acts, fantastic foundations for any
church.
Please note that services in the school holidays (July 23rd – August
27th) will start at 9.30am.
The Good News Library Van
The Good News Library Van will be returning to Barnack to Margaret
Durdey’s house, 12, Canon Drive on Tuesday July18th. It will
be there from 10.30 until 12 noon as usual, when you will be able
to borrow books, videos and tapes, if you so wish, but of course
you will be very welcome to come if you would just like to meet up
with friends for a coffee and a chat. If you have never been before
do make time to come I’m sure that you enjoy your morning.
Coffee morning for Rumania
Many of you will remember Thelma Wilford, who, since retiring as
a Health Visitor, has spent much of her time in Rumania, mainly helping
with the care of orphaned children. In the past we have collected
money, clothes and children’s shoes. The need now is for basic
primary school equipment, medicines such as Paracetamol, bandages,
and of course money.
We are holding a coffee morning on Thursday, July 13th, from 10.30
to 12 noon, at 1 Canon Drive, Barnack. (740347)
Thelma will have very recently returned from Rumania, and will be
with us to tell us more of her work. We will have a raffle, but instead
of a “Bring and Buy” you may care to “bring” some
of the items mentioned above, for example, plain or ruled exercise
books, pencils, rubbers, rulers, children’s scissors, black
or red biros, bandages or Paracetamol tablets. Any money raised can
be used by Thelma to buy other medicines or any other items currently
needed. Please support this worthy cause. Elizabeth
Young.
Bainton & Ashton Buttercross Club
Did you know that you can now buy smoke alarms which are powered
by your mains supply - solving the problem of checking the battery?
Or alarms that plug into a light socket? There’s even alarms
with 10 year batteries, and considering that smoke alarms REALLY
DO SAVE LIVES it is essential to have them fitted. Advice from the
Fire Prevention Officer and also practical ways keeping our property
secure from theft from the Crime Reduction Officer gave us plenty
to think about at our June meeting.
Our July meeting on 5th will be a walk around John Clare’s
Helpston, finishing with supper at the Blue Bell. We shall assemble
at 6-30pm and there are cars with spaces, so please ring Judith on
740865 or Mary on 740097 if you haven’t already given in your
name.
Don’t forget Bainton Family Day on 2nd July - Buttercross will
host the usual home made cakes, produce and plant stall, so please
remember to bring along items for sale if you can.
Our August meeting will be the annual Boules evening in the grounds
of Bainton House - August 2nd, 6-30pm, so make a date in your diary
and bring along friends and family.
Bainton And Ashton Family Day
Not long now! Our annual village fete is to be held on 2nd. July
in Bainton House Gardens. Please feel free to come and bring any
guests you might have- entrance is free and there is something for
everyone. At 1pm we have a barbecue with food and drinks on sale.
At 2pm the stalls and sideshows open. Have a go at skittles, or football
or hook-a-duck. Watch the juggler perform, snap up a bargain at the
many stalls we have. Watch the children having fun at the sports:
three-legged races, sack races, or the inevitable water games. Classic
cars will be on view, paintings of the village on sale. Ice creams
all day or stop for tea and home made cakes. Children should have
been told about the design-a-flag competition open to all children
(villagers or not) under the age of 13 years. Produce your own flag
to parade round the field and win a super prize. Wow, it should all
be great! Don’t miss the highlight of the village calendar.

Parish Council Reports and Notices
Bainton
and Ashton Parish Council
Please note that the next Parish Council is to be held in Bainton Reading
Room on the 4th. July at the earlier time of 7.30pm. Come and find
out what’s happening in your village- all welcome.
Barnack Parish Council Report - June
The monthly Parish Council Meeting took place on June 12th in the village
hall. The chairman and six councillors were present together with the
clerk.
New litter bins are to be provided at the entrance to The Hills and
Holes on Wittering Road and in the lay-by on Stamford Road. One new
and two replacement seats for the parish have been requested. Further
letters are to be sent to the BBC concerning the stoppage of payments
for TV licences at the Post Office and also a further letter to Peterborough
City Council with regard to concessionary bus fares over the discrimination
of residents living near county boundaries
Planning permission had been received for a first floor extension at
Manor Stone House, Barnack. An application had been received for a
first floor extension and garage at 28 Orchard Road, Barnack. It is
hoped to renew the church path. It has become very worn and is unsuitable
for wheelchairs. Quotes for this work are to be obtained. Cambs Constabulary
would like to remind everyone, especially elderly residents to be wary
of distraction burglaries and rogue traders.
Our city councillor David Over now has his own web site .This can be
found by following the links on www.peterborough.gov.uk
The full minutes of the meeting are displayed on the notice boards
around the village and on the website www.barnackparishcouncil.org.
The next meeting will be held on July 10th 2006 at 7.30pm. All are
welcome.
News from around
the Diocese
Inspired!
This is the title of an initiative launched recently by English Heritage,
which aims to draw everyone’s attention to the need for a massive
re-think concerning the future of our church buildings.
The report, Securing
a Future for Historic Places of Worship, points out that £185
million is needed each year to pay for repairs and maintenance of
the 16,151 parish churches in this country. Congregations are currently
raising about £67 million,
while English Heritage and other grant-making bodies contribute a further £40
million.
Where is the rest going to come from? Without state aid on
a much larger scale than at present exists it is difficult to see that
many of our church buildings will survive for much longer, and the
nation needs to be asked whether it really wants to see these buildings,
with all their rich symbolism and associations, fall into disuse and
decay.
It is our responsibility, as local congregations and church
leaders, to keep on bringing these questions to people’s
attention, and I urge you not to give up doing this. Members of Parliament
and elected local councillors need to be frequently reminded of the
crisis we are facing, for it is a crisis, though it is a crisis not
just for the Church but for the nation.
It would be quite wrong, though, to think that the only (or even the
main) contribution which the Church makes to society is to provide
buildings in which people can meet and worship. On the contrary, it
is the living example of thousands of Christian men and women in their
work, in their family life, and in their voluntary service that provides
the most powerful witness to Christ’s saving presence in the
world today.
The Church comes in for a lot of criticism, particularly on television
and in the press: some of that criticism is justified, but much of
it is sneering and ignorant, and those who make it often overlook the
fact that the Church - so frequently dismissed as dying and irrelevant
- is easily the largest and most successful voluntary organisation
in this country.
More than that, other voluntary organisations, especially
those providing support for vulnerable people in our society, very
often include substantial numbers of Christians in their membership,
and in some of the marginalised areas of our society Christians are
just about the only people who are offering care and service.
We dare not be complacent, for we could and should do much more, but
we need not be ashamed of drawing attention to the contribution which
the Church as a whole makes to the wellbeing of our society.
The call
to be the Church of England, and with it the task of carrying the nation’s
spiritual needs and yearnings, is probably harder than it has ever
been, not least because in recent years the Church has gradually lost
most of the privileges that used to go along with being the Established
Church.
But one privilege has
not been lost, and never will be: namely the privilege of being the
people of God, chosen and called by him to make his presence known
in the world.
May God continue to
bless and strengthen you for all your witness in his name.
Ven David Painter, Archdeacon of Oakham
Growing together
Individual
churches and their members are part of “the Body
of Christ”, the wider church, and called to work together in mission
and ministry. Currently, all 14 deaneries are working on their own
unique “Deanery Mission Plan”.
The process includes a fact-finding
exercise, and deanery synods have sent each parish a questionnaire
about their activities, resources, and needs. On the basis of the
returns each deanery will be better equipped to encourage co-operation
and united activities, and to share their needs and opportunities.
Some deaneries already work closely together, sharing services and resources,
considering possible pastoral reorganisation or deployment of ministers,
and helping each other in raising the Parish Share (most of which goes
to training, supporting and housing priests, and priests' pensions).
Others are catching up!
Copies of the Deanery Mission Pack, suggesting
how deaneries can approach this exercise in locally appropriate ways
