The Rector’s Letter

Pause for Though from Parish Priest: Canon Margaret Venables
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford, Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET

It won't surprise many people to know that I believe in change.

Put like that it seems threatening. "What's she up to this time?" "Another of those clerics!" "Why can't they leave well alone?" We all know how it sounds. But every Christian must believe in change because we of all people know that nothing is perfect, except God. And what isn't perfect is in need of change, whether it is society, the church or you or me.
It is how we involve ourselves in change that is what matters. We may be a reformer, a revolutionary or a radical. A reformer takes what already exists and nudges, moulds or re-arranges it. A revolutionary discards the existing order as unsuitable. A radical goes deep under the existing form of things and emerges with a re-thought model.

I wish I was a radical, but, in truth find I am a reformer. Instead of getting to the roots I tend to tinker around, re-arranging the furniture of my own life and that of the church, instead of asking whether that furniture is necessary.

It's the price I pay for being a “both - and” kind of person rather than and “either - or” kind of person. Because the world is often hurt by the latter, unless as a radical, you have a touch of genius or a touch of God. Jesus could, therefore, be a radical; the rest of us need to be more modest.

If you can, on the other hand, affirm the truth of both one and another views, you are merely recognising that Truth is bigger than both of us. And this has practical consequences. It means I want our church to be a pastoral, caring church, but also one with an evangelistic edge, wanting to share the good news of Jesus Christ. It means I want to affirm both the traditional and the modern in church music. It means I want to encourage the committed to grow, and also take seriously the doubts of the honest agnostic. It means I want to help Christians go deeper with God in prayer, meditation and reflective reading, but also to engage with the social issues that must hurt ^od - the inequalities and violence, the hunger and hatred of this world. And I hope that we will both come to church each week, expectant and excited about encountering God in worship, and also go into Monday to Saturday life expectant and excited about encountering God at work there.

I believe and trust St John’s, St Mary's and St Andrew’s are both - and churches. The Truth is bigger than all of us - so let us not be afraid of change.

Margaret

Village Ladies Group
On 22nd May, Ollie Mayhew gave an interesting talk on his world challenge in Tanzania. He was involved in the building of a schooolroom floor and other projects. The government of Tanzania had provided a ceiling and walls for the school room but the rest was due to volunteers like Ollie. He said that the experience had given him a broader outlook on life. He did a first class presentation including some of the local crafts of Tanzania. This has been a very worthwhile project by an enterprising young man.
On Tuesday 26th June we will be visiting the Burghley Surprise Garden. Our visit starts at 5pm but we intend to have some refreshments of our own choice at the Orangery from 3.30pm onwards. The Sculpture Garden will still be open for anyone wanting to have a look round after our visit to the Surprise Garden. If you have not signed up and you wish to join us please ring 01780 740844.
Tuesday 24th July will be our Garden Party at 2 Hillside Close, Ufford. It will start at 6.30pm. If it is wet it will be in the Village Hall. Visitors are most welcome to join us and help to support our charity, Anna’s Hope.

Barnack Bowls Club
The winners of the May draw were:
No 8 Phil Collins £25
No 5 Ivy Ratcliffe £15
No 10 Margaret Andrews £10
June 10 was the date of the first of the 2 open Galas to be held at the Club this year and once again we were favoured with good weather. A total of 16 teams participated and the final was a contest between a team led by Paul Buckley and a team led by Brian Goodwin. It was a close finish but the eventual winners were Paul’s team.

The Good News Library Van
The Good News Library Van will be coming to Barnack on Tuesday July 17th from 10.30 until 12noon. This month it will be at The Lodge, Bainton Road, Barnack, the home of Stan and Jessie Goodacre. This is a village facility, which is not very well supported. We are aware that the morning visit precludes anyone who is working, and those who have other commitments on that day. However, anyone who is free at that time would be very welcome to come for a coffee and see what is on offer. We aim to provide a friendly environment, where people can come to see friends, and meet new people. The library provides books, DVD’s, videos, tapes and CD’s. These can be borrowed for an unlimited time, and provide good reading and viewing, but there is no pressure to borrow books, if you just want to come for a coffee, so don’t be shy, just turn up at our door, and we will make you most welcome.

Bainton And Ashton Family Day
Sunday 8th July In Bainton House Gardens
Everyone from all surrounding villages is welcome to come and support the Bainton and Ashton Family Day. The organisers of Wimbledon have kindly agreed to get their competition finished earlier this year so as not to clash with ours, so there’s now no conflict of interests! As ever, we expect the sun to be shining strongly and a real English village occasion to be held. There will be a barbeque at 1pm and the stalls and sideshows will start at 2pm, sports, games, races, competitions will then proceed throughout the afternoon, teas will be served and the day will finish with evensong at 5.30pm. Two new features this year:
Design a T-shirt competition for all those 12 and under. Open to all children from any village. Put your own design on a T-shirt new or old with felt pens, stick-ons, sew-ons, anything you like. Prizes for the most creative, for up to 7s and 8-12 year olds. Be prepared to model it yourself!
Silent Auction of Promises. A new competition using some kind offers from local people. Some so far- A chauffeur/butler to make your dinner party go smoothly; A Burghley House Family ticket; A cake every month till Christmas; Grass cutting while you’re away; Baby-sitting; A supply of the renowned ‘Sheila Dalton’ shortbread; An original Birkbeck painting. Come and put in an offer on the day, the best will win the prize!

Barnack Methodist Chapel
Our June Coffee Morning and Cake Stall raised a further £136.90 for our funds – thanks to your generous support. Unfortunately we are short of bakers for July and so there will NOT be a Coffee Morning and Cake Stall in July. We very much hope therefore that you will join us again on the first Saturday in August, namely 4 August, from 10 to 11 am. We will also be selling jams and marmalades at the Village Show on Sunday 12 August.

Christian Aid
This year we have sent a total of £2,109.55 to Christian Aid. The total for Bainton and Ashton was £508.10. This is an excellent result, a big thank you to Mary Creswell who did the organising and John Tanner who did all the collecting. The total for Barnack and Pilsgate was £601.45.
Unfortunately due to lack of helpers there was no collection in Southorpe. Thank you once again to everyone who helped to collect and everyone who contributed. By supporting Christian Aid we are amongst millions of people trying to help some of the poorest people in the world. If you would like more details about the work of Christian Aid there is an office in Peterborough, 01733 345755. Jose Irving-Bell.

Friends of Barnack Church 200 Club
The winners in the May draw were:
£20.00 Mr. D. Dennis
£10.00 Mrs. J. Graham
£ 5.00 Mrs. M. Perkins

House Group in Barnack
It is proposed to start a House Group in Barnack in the autumn. This will give us an opportunity to learn more about our faith and help us to become more effective members of the Christian community.
The meetings would be structured, and based initially on the Emmaus course. Some in the parish will have had experience of this, as we used a part of it in a Lent course a few years ago. I suggest a preliminary meeting on Sunday evening, September 16th, at 7.00pm at 1, Canon Drive, to plan the way forward. We could then decide time, frequency of meetings, venue etc. If you would like to know more pleased speak to Canon Margaret or myself, or come, without obligation, on September 16th. Elizabeth Young.

Wikki In The Garden
Our next garden will be Limrose, Barnack Road, home of Elaine Ward, on Saturday 21 July @ 10.30 am.

Horticultural Show and Family Day
Plans for the horticultural show and family day are well under way. As we move closer to the date we would like as many as residents as possible to enter the show. You do not need to be an expert and we are much more relaxed than the village show on Sunday nights on TV! This year all trophies won will be engraved by the committee. We still need volunteers to help on the day or help set up, if you can spare some time to help this village event and raise funds for village projects please contact Debbie on 740048 or Judi on 07901686142.

Darby & Joan Club
Various activities have been enjoyed, including ‘Call my Bluff’ and Beetle. Mrs R Porter won the Bottle Stopper competition, 2nd Mrs M Sharpe and 3rd Mrs E Hudson. The ‘Unusual Tea Towel’ competition attracted twelve entries and was won by Mrs I Ratcliffe, 2nd Mrs R Porter and 3rd Miss S Betts.
On 15 August, we are holding a ‘Bring a Friend’ Tea Afternoon at The Acres from 2.00 pm. Everyone welcome.

Thanks from Sidney Tuck
Having finally come down to earth, may I, through this magazine, thank everyone who made my 90th such a wonderful occasion. With so much whispering going on behind my back, I had no idea what was being planned!
My thanks to the Social Committee of Barnack Church, for the wonderful cake and wine that followed the service on 10th and to the congregation for their wishes that rather overwhelmed me.
Also thanks to the congregation of the Methodist Chapel and St Andrew’s for their birthday wishes. Also to everyone who sent cards (I received 50+). I will endeavour to thank each and every one as me meet. Special thanks to Mrs Linda Canon for the excellent cake she baked and uniquely decorated.
Lastly to Margaret, my baby daughter and family for the surprise visit with my two lovely great granddaughters, and the unforgettable lunch.

Parish Council Reports and Notices

Ufford Parish Council Meetings May 24th, May 30th & June 13th
1 On May 24th the Annual Return and Internal Audit were read out and signed.
2 At the Annual Meeting on May 30th Ian Glew was re-elected as Chairman and Patricia Stewart-Mogg agreed to be re-appointed as Clerk and Responsible Finance Officer. UPC agreed to adopt the New Code of Conduct including clause 12(2) and update Standing Orders.
3 UPC is still waiting for a new seat to replace the one at the end of Newport Way. A simple wooden one had been chosen but it appears that PCC is currently supplying metal ones, which would not be appropriate in Ufford.
4 Please let a councillor know if there would be a demand for a rubbish skip preferably for half a day, either in Ufford or a neighbouring parish. Details of what can and what cannot be deposited in such a skip are being obtained.
5 Residents continue to report “near misses” on Ufford hill and fear that there could be a fatal accident. Nearly every month in Parish News UPC requests drivers not to park on the hill or near the T junction on Walcot Road in the interests of road safety. Following discussion with PCC, a “Tow Away” zone is being considered.
6 Complaints have been received about dog waste on village footways and verges and on rural footpaths. Dog owners are respectfully reminded to bag and bin it.
7 The yellow-flowered ragwort can be fatal to grazing animals, including horses. Residents are asked to co-operate by uprooting and destroying any such plants seen growing in the parish.

Report on Ufford Annual Parish Meeting
1 The Chairman gave a detailed report of what UPC has done in the past year and what it proposes to do this year. A summary is displayed on the notice board.
2 The following environmental proposals were agreed:
· PCC to be asked if it will register the 2 drifts between Marholm Road and Southey Woods so that they can be established as public rights of way/bridleways.
· The Footpath Officer to negotiate with Milton Estate over the link footpath between the bridleway south of Southey Woods and Castor Hanglands.
· The Footpath Officer to negotiate with landowners over the creation of bridleways in the parish, in particular Clay Lane to High Field Road.
· To continue the conservation schemes on the playing field.
· An informative roadside sign near Langley Bush.
· Liaison with Forest Enterprise to improve access to Southey Woods and make them more family friendly.
· To continue to support Langdyke Trust at Swaddywell Pit Nature Reserve.

Barnack Parish Council
At the Parish Council Meeting held on Monday 11 June councillors noted that the closing date published for applications for the post of clerk should have been 14 June and not 14 November as printed in the May issue of the Parish News. Three reports were presented from meetings attended by councillors this month. Mrs Woollard had attended the Gypsy and Traveller public engagement meeting hosted by the East of England Regional Assembly and the CALC meeting and Mrs Berrill had attended the Rural Neighbourhood Police Panel meeting. Planning applications were discussed for the pruning of trees at 3 Station Road, the conversion of a barn at The Old Nursery, Pilsgate, the erection of boundary fencing, hard standing and the use of land for grazing in Uffington Road and a two storey extension at Southcroft, Main Street. Financial reports were presented and cheques for payment approved. The detail of the village information plaque was discussed. A coloured design was approved similar to those in the Hills and Holes. Prices had been received and the stone based was being investigated. Final approval will be given for the work to be progressed at the meeting held in July. The reprinting of the Village Walks leaflet was approved. Councillors unanimously voted to adopt the new Code of Conduct to take effect from 01.09.07. The progress of work included in the action plan of the Parish Plan was reviewed and it was agreed that this was up to date. Six matters were discussed under highways and village matters. It was agreed to replace the village notice boards as these were in a poor state of repair. PCC was to be asked to provide a new bus shelter for Station Road with the design to match the one recently erected in The Square. It was noted that there had been a very poor response to the ragwort pull on July 9, with only two residents attending, including the chairman. A letter to be written to the Millstone requesting the possibility of the old village photographs, which used to be displayed, to be donated for village archives if they are no longer required. It was reported that the school warning lights did not appear to be working at present, some motorists were ignoring the temporary traffic lights and the chain across the cricket club entrance preventing across was no longer being used. The next meeting will be held on Monday 2 July in the Village Hall 7.30pm.

News from around the Diocese

Bishop FrankBishop Frank writes: Shaping up for mission

In the small village of Weston one Saturday morning the normal calm and tranquillity gave way to a purring, then a roaring, as over thirty motorcyclists from the Astwell benefice arrived at the Baptist Church for bacon sandwiches, coffee and a careful briefing. Their arrival and departure were masterminded by Will Adams, one time headteacher, now Rector of the benefice. His “class of 2007” were all volunteers gathering to travel across the East Midlands to publicise and collect for Christian Aid.

These men and women (yes, those bikers are not all blokes) were “on a mission”. Some were churchgoers, but by no means all, and some were a bit amused by the conversation of a bishop trading stories about life on two wheels.

What a brilliant project, and how imaginative in the year when the diocese is called to discover what it means to be “mission shaped”. Will and his team had recognized two key understandings in re-shaping our churches for mission. The first is that many people are more comfortable if they can contribute rather than be passive receivers. It was humbling to see how readily those bikers donned their red tabards or sashes to publicise Christian Aid.
The second is that the activity centred around an interest, perhaps even a passion, shared and enjoyed – in this case motorcycling. Those thirty early risers on that Saturday were far from reluctant recruits. I wouldn’t be surprised if they join in other events in the Astwell benefice in the months to come.

Being mission-shaped means being prepared to take other people’s concerns and interests seriously. It means a willingness to relinquish the idea that people should “come to us on our terms”. Perhaps it means taking inspiration from Jesus the carpenter, who seemed to spend much of his ministry on the sea in fishermen’s boats, or in the fields with farmers and their crops.
Becoming mission shaped will certainly involve taking a lead from divine authority

Yet more anecdotes from Vera Male’s hoard of how children see things...
I had been teaching my three-year-old daughter, Caitlin, the Lord’s Prayer for several evenings at bedtime; she would repeat the words after me. Finally she decided to go solo. I listened with pride as she carefully enunciated each word right up to the end of the prayer: “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us some e-mail”.

And three-year-old Reese also got things slightly wrong: “Our Father, who does art in heaven, Harold is his name. Amen”.

While another little boy was heard praying: “Lord, if you can’t make me a better boy, don’t worry about it. I’m having a real good time like I am .

Their mother was preparing pancakes for Kevin, 5, and Ryan, 3, who began arguing over who would get the first one. Seeing the opportunity of a moral lesson, she said:” If Jesus were here, He would say: ‘Let my brother have the first pancake’”. Kevin turned to his younger brother and said: “Ryan, you be Jesus!

A Sunday School teacher asked her class, “What was Jesus’s mother’s name?” A child answered, “Mary.” The teacher asked “what was Mary’s husband’s name?” The same child answered, “Verge”. Confused, the teacher asked where the child had heard that. The child answered, “You know they are always talking about Verge ‘n’ Mary.”

Another Sunday school teacher asked her class “And why is it necessary to be quiet in church? “ One bright little girl replied. “Because people are sleeping.”

One precocious child wrote: “It is sometimes difficult to hear in church because the agnostics are so terrible”
