The Rector’s Letter

Pause for Though from Parish Priest: Canon Margaret Venables
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford, Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET

"Paws for Thought"

It seems that ‘she who thinks she wears a dog collar’ has got herself into a bit of a mess this month, so has handed this piece over to me! So I thought I would tell you just what it is like to be a Rectory dog. I mean, I’m not complaining, on the whole I have a pretty good time with lots of people to talk to, but sometimes it does get a bit much.

First of all, I always go to Morning Prayer and that usually happens before I’ve even been offered a proper walk, but then I do think it is a good way to start the day and sometimes at Bainton there are biscuits!

During the rest of the morning anything can happen. Sometimes ‘she’ is really boring and spends the whole morning moving things round in her study and playing with the computer, and the phone goes quite often, disturbing my morning nap. I like it best when people come and I greet them at the door – I am a bit noisy – and then they sit down for a chat and it’s nice to listen to them and sometimes they even speak to me. Though when lots of them come and I can’t get on my sofa it’s a bit tiring.

Other times ‘she’ goes out and leaves me, telling me I can’t go to everyone’s house or the hospital - I don’t quite understand why – I’d especially like to go where cats live, just so I could tease them! I always get taken to PCC Meetings, they can be very boring as they do all talk for ages. I usually go to sleep, but quickly get up when I hear them say ‘be with us all evermore. Amen’ – because then it is time to go home at last.

I like it best when we go out for a whole day, that doesn’t happen often but I am lucky to live somewhere where there are such lovely walks and where there are so many rabbits to chase! My friend dog, Dot, often comes for the day and that means I have her to talk to when ‘she’ goes out, but Dot doesn’t really understand about church life, so I have to explain things to her and she does seem to enjoy praying with us now she has learnt to sit still and listen. What makes me really upset is when ‘she’ is just about to put my dinner down and the phone goes and then the human person on the other end is always more important and I sometimes have to wait ages, when I am really hungry.

Sundays aren’t too good, but I do realize that ‘she’ does have lots to do on that day, but I would like to go to church, too. I will be able to go this month, because there is a special service for animals and I will get my yearly blessing, I always look forward to that. On the whole, I don’t think it is too bad being a Rectory dog - just as long as ‘she’ remembers that I do need two walks a day and just sometimes a whole day out somewhere else!

By the way ‘she’ asked me to write this because there is a new baby in the family and ‘she’ has been too excited to think about anything else! He’s apparently called Jed, very biblical (“Samuel12) and he’s very tiny. I haven’t been invited to see him yet. I hope I am soon, because babies smell so lovely and he won’t be big enough to pull my hair and ears yet.

Do stop and speak to me when you see me. I do bark sometimes, but I really like people and especially children.

What’s happening to our village?
Having once been young person in a village environment and residents moaning about us hanging around bus shelters or on the local green bench, I feel very strongly about whats happening to the village of Barnack.
Whilst most of us watch documentaries and the news on a daily basis about young people and their antics which lead to destruction and damage, I would like to make you aware that Barnack is falling victim to all of this aswell. Whether it be windows being smashed, racing cars around the village, the use of drugs and shouting and disturbing people of all ages in the early hours of the morning, our once quiet little village is now being victimised.
Please lets try and stop this. Lets hope this plea with our younger generation may have the desired affect. Concerned resident

The Buttercross Club
Great skill and dexterity was shown by John Shone of Rutland Willows in his demonstration at our June meeting. It was very absorbing to observe a master craftsman at work whilst he deftly manipulated willow sticks into works of art; John and his daughter Louise introduced us to a veritable menagerie of willow creatures including pheasants, fish, butterflies, dragonflies, snails, otters …. all this plus the more traditional and well-known applications of hurdles, pergolas and arbors. It was also interesting to hear about the growing and harvesting of willow and the how soaking is a vital part of its preparation.
On Wednesday, 2nd July the Buttercross is planning an outing to Vine House Farm, Deeping St. Nicholas, to have a tour, followed by a Barbeque, of Nicholas Watts’ organic farm; please assemble at the Reading Room car park at 5.45pm. The cost will be an all-inclusive £8 per head (a minimum of 25 people are needed) so if you’d like to come please phone Ro Yates on 740833 (husbands, partners, friends most welcome!). JJ

Recognise and help treat a stroke...
(This article was sent in by a reader and the content cannot be verified)
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
Recognizing A Stroke:
Remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster.
The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke .
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S* Ask the individual to SMILE.
T* Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) i.e. It is sunny out today)
R* Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 999/911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke : Stick out Your
Tongue: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', it could be a sign of a stroke

  Letter from the Bishop

Bishop Frank

Bishop Frank writes

Lambeth Conference calling

We have much to learn from others and July and August offer us an unrivalled opportunity. We will be welcoming several visiting bishops into the diocese who will join us before the Lambeth Conference.

The Bishops and their wives come from every corner of the world; from Africa and Asia, Australia and America. What a privilege to offer them hospitality as they begin, for some, the daunting task of experiencing our culture. As we want to introduce them to the life of faith in our diocese we hope they will share something of God’s grace as they experience it where they serve.

Deaneries will be hosting special events with our guests on Sunday 13 July and we hope many will make these gatherings a first priority. In addition to this there will be opportunities for some of us to host a bishop in our parishes. More details will be available through your deanery and on the diocesan website.

Bishop Ian and I will then travel with our visitors to the University of Kent at Canterbury where the Lambeth Conference begins on 16 July. The aim of the Conference is not to spend hours rehearsing the differences which are so well publicized in the Anglican Communion. The focus is rather to equip the 600 plus bishops who are attending to be more effective leaders in mission. There will be times for retreat and reflection, for study and silence, and also to engage with the challenges of our age as we seek to be faithful to the Christ who sends us out as He was sent by the Father.

Do pray for our visitors and for Bishop Ian and me, that we might make the most of this time for the sake of God’s Kingdom, and as we seek the healing grace our world so urgently needs.

Many have already been using the prayer printed below in preparation for the Conference and I commend it for both personal and congregational use in the coming weeks.

Bishop of Brixworth

The Lambeth Prayer

Pour down upon us, O God, the gifts of your Holy Spirit, that those who prepare for the Lambeth Conference may be filled with wisdom and understanding.

May they know at work within them that creative energy and vision which belong to our humanity, made in your image and redeemed by your love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

  News from around the Diocese

Lulu Pelly to be ordained in July

Lulu Pelly, for six years the friendly voice at the end of the phone in the diocese’s Adult Education office at Bouverie Court, Northampton, is to be ordained Deacon at Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday 5 July.
Lulu lives at Potterspury, where her farmer husband manages 3,000 acres of arable, soft fruit and Aberdeen Angus cattle, fallow deer, Christmas trees, trout lakes and, more recently, four buffalo! She will become Assistant Curate in the Tove Benefice, at group of parishes in and around Towcester.
Until she was 13 years old Lulu lived in Uppingham where her father was Headmaster of Uppingham School. The family then moved to Buckinghamshire and Gloucestershire before Lulu went on to Bristol University to study History, History of Art and Italian.
“May faith journey is a long one beginning in early childhood,” says Lulu. “I went to Woodard Prep School in Yorkshire which taught me the discipline of morning and evening prayer and provided wonderful wide open spaces to play in our free time. Being out in the open enjoying God’s creation is still very important to me. I tried turning my back on God in my thirties, but he persisted and did not let me go.”
Whilst her two children were growing up she did temporary work of various kinds, including running the Pick Your Own business at the farm during June and July.
“Coming  to Potterspury I vowed I would avoid the PCC and such involvement but to my surprise I became Churchwarden at St Nicholas in 1994 and began Reader training in 1996. I was licensed as Reader in 1996 and selected for Ordination Training in July 2005. I have been studying with the Eastern Region Ministerial Course for the last three years.”
Lulu will be ordained at Peterborough Cathedral on Sunday 6 July, alongside fifteen others including:
Paul Armstead, Gary Alderson, Sarah Brown, Hildred Crowther, Paul Frost, Rachel Hetherington, Robert Miles, Michael Moore, Peter Morrell, Carolyn Oley, Susan Rolfe, Colin Simpson, Janet Tebby, Geoff Waters and Andrea Watkins.
For more details about each of these new Assistant Curates see the next issue of the Magazine Resource.
