The Rector’s Letter

Pause for Though from Parish Priest: Canon Margaret Venables
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford, Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET

Last month you may have read Barni’s article about his fears of leaving his home in Barnack – well he has had a stay of execution and we will now not be moving until February of next year. The reason for this is that it will give the Diocese more time to talk to the parishes about some new proposals for the future and should shorten the time that you are without a Parish priest in our villages. It will also give me more time to think about what I am going to do with so many things, when I move to a smaller house – though Barni can be assured there will be plenty of food for him.
I hope, too, that in this extra time we will see the ‘Open Door’ project get underway. What Barnack PCC is trying to do is make the church building a friendlier place for our many visitors, but also for villagers. It is a beautiful building, but it is not just an historic monument, rather a place where many events could take place as well as somewhere where everyone can go to pray or just to sit and think.
There is the story of one church where each day a vicar found an old man he did not know sitting in a pew at the back of the church. After a week or so the vicar thought he should ask the man why he was just sitting there and was he in need of anything? ‘No, not at all, thank you, vicar,’ the man replied, ‘ I come in here and I just looks at Him and He looks at me and that’s enough’ Churches should be just that sort of place and I hope everyone feels that about Barnack Church.
To make it more hospitable, however, you will find that there is a place to make a drink, information about the church for adults, a booklet for the children to follow a trail round the church, and (Barni will be pleased to hear) a bowl and a welcome for dogs. By the end of August you will also find a newly refurbished small children’s area . But the church is still primarily for prayer and we plan to set aside a place near our famous ‘Christ in Majesty’ where folk may sit quietly and, if they wish, light a candle in memory of a loved one, or anyone for whom prayer is needed. There will also be a Book of Remembrance which will have its page turned daily and anyone in the villages will be able to have a name entered in the book. Each week the names for the following week will also be remembered during the Sunday Service.
In Bainton, too, there will soon be a new booklet about the church and the village.
It is commonly said the Church of England is the only organization that exists for those who are not members, our doors are open to all – so do go inside and look.

Margaret

Film Screening - Back by popular demand!

Last year the Village Hall was full of people enjoying a film night as part of Barnack Show, it was a lively and fun night. A lot of people have approached the Show Committee and requested that we do a re-run of the night so people can see the film again or people who missed last year can attend. In the film, made just over a year ago residents shared their recollections of the area and of the Barnack Show. The result is a fascinating and entertaining insight of stories and memories about the community.

Buttercross Club
The gardens of Hudd’s Mill must surely rank as one of the hidden jewels of Stamford; the unique garden is surrounded by water and the fertile soil has greatly contributed to the flourishing array of trees and shrubs. Azar Woods and her husband acquired derelict Hudd’s Mill and the surrounding land some 22 years ago and have since created a lush and verdant garden with a wealth of specimen trees, unusual shrubs and exquisite flowers! Of particular interest were the rose garden - a splendid array of differing varieties; the numerous hibiscus clearly thrive, the orchard yields abundant fruits, the standard Wisteria were a delight and the many carefully clipped spheres demonstrate the care and attention needed to maintain such an interesting garden. The blue mosaic crocodile provided an entertaining diversion, poised as it was to dive into the river just as we crossed the stepping stones ! All this and then to enjoy tea and home-made cakes on the terrace whilst continuing to enjoy the surroundings was a real treat for us all. A children’s hospice in Oxfordshire will benefit from the funds raised by all visits to the garden.
All are welcome at our next meeting on Wednesday 1st July at 7.30pm. JJ

RBL Summer Evening Party
A date for your diaries. This will be held at the Millstone Inn at 7pm on Wednesday 12th August to which all members and their friends are cordially invited. Further details will be announced in due course.

Pre-School: Mrs Fenn Leaving
Mrs Fenn the senior supervisor at Barnack pre-school is retiring after 17 years of loyal service. Mrs Fenn has worked really hard over her time at Barnack to make sure each child in her care has received an excellent start to their education and also to leave a fantastic pre-school to build on. We will be holding an informal drinks and nibbles evening to say goodbye and thank you to Mrs Fenn on Thursday 9th July. It will be from 7.30 to 9.00 in Barnack Village Hall and we would like to invite any parents who have had children at pre-school to come along and help make the evening a memorable one for Mrs Fenn. If you would like to come along then please give Karen Dunn a call on 01780 749198 or email Karen.dunn@dsl.pipex.com so that we can have an idea of numbers. If you would like to make a contribution to a collection we are making then please take it into the school office in an envelope marked Pre-school Mrs Fenns leaving gift. If this is a problem then please contact Karen as above.
We are also pleased to announce that Catherine Wright will be taking over as the new senior supervisor from September. Catherine has lots of experience both working in the pre-school and as a parent of children in the pre-school when her own children attended. She has a professional status qualification which very few pre-school leaders in the country have. She is also qualified in forest school skills and has been instrumental in the fantastic outdoor education ethos of the pre-school, making the most of our wonderful garden setting. We are sure that pre-school will flourish under her leadership.
Request for toys from pre-school
Pre-school are running a second hand toy stall at the horticultural show. If you have any toys in good condition that you would like to donate for pre-school to sell then please bring them to the pre-school mobile or ring Sophie Moore on 01780 740010 or Karen Dunn on 01780 749198. Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Barnack W.I.

At our June meeting we received an interesting and entertaining report about the recent A.G.M. in the Albert Hall. Mary Boyall was our delegate and she described the day’s events. The single resolution for debate this year concerned the honeybee! It read, “The honeybee plays a vital role in the pollination of food crops, and in our environment. In view of concerns about the accelerating decline in the U.K. bee population this meeting urges Her Majesty’s Government to increase funding for research into Bee Health.” Presentations were made giving background information and arguments for and against, but the motion was eventually carried by a very large, 99.4%, majority. Among other speakers on the day Maureen Lipmann was probably the most popular. We were grateful to Mary for her report and for representing us. We then enjoyed a talk by our speaker for the evening, Mr. Paul Smith, on the subject of how the package tour business was started by Thomas Cook. We learned about his life, and how his company was founded. His talk was followed by questions after which he was thanked by Gill Glenister. Our next meeting is on July 14th at 7.30 in the Village Hall, when the speaker will be an officer of the Cambridgeshire Drug Squad. We are always pleased to welcome new members In addition to our monthly meeting there is a luncheon club, outings are arranged to places of interest, and a new venture is the walking group where both long and short walks are led. Elizabeth Young

The Corn Exchange Theatre is the Club’s Charity for the year and by 2010 the collections will enable us to buy a seat.

 Parish Council Notices

Southorpe Parish Council
The AGM and Annual meeting of the Southorpe Parish Council took place on Monday 18 May following a parish council meeting. All Councillors, the Clerk and three members of the public were present.
The Chairman, Nick Lodge, gave a report on the year. The year had started with all the Councillors re-appointed for a term of four years. Considerable time and effort had been spent on planning applications, traffic related issues and environmental projects. The issue of traffic calming was continuing to be pursued with the City Council and a further traffic survey would be conducted now that work had finished on the A1. He welcomed the promise of Speedwatch equipment for the villages. A further £500 had been received from PCC’s Community Fund for environmental projects, and residents are encouraged to suggest suitable projects within the village. The Entertainments Secretary gave his annual report, both the summer picnic and the bonfire party had been a great success again. The Financial Officer presented the financial statement for the year.
The residents at the meeting thanked the Councillors for their continued discussions with PCC on traffic calming but expressed frustration at the slow rate of progress; considerable concern was expressed by residents from the southern end of the village at the speed of traffic. The Parish Council would continue to pursue this matter.
The next meeting would take place on Monday 28 September at 7.30 pm at Gamekeepers Lodge. All residents are welcome to attend.

Ufford Parish Council Meeting June 9th 2009
Ward Councillor David Over was in attendance.
1. The gates of the car park at Southey Woods will be unlocked for a trial period on Saturdays and Sundays between July 18th and August 30th from 10am until 4pm. A programme of activities particularly for families is being arranged. Keep a look out for details.
2. Some of this year’s Community Fund money has been spent on oak benches, 10 altogether, with 2 in each parish in Barnack Ward. One of Ufford’s benches is on Clay Lane and the other at the Marholm Road end of the drift leading down into Southey Woods, both popular with walkers and cyclists.
3. Following concerns expressed by residents about disturbance caused by the peacocks, a letter has been sent to PCC Environmental Health Dept.
4. If street parking is unavoidable, Main Street residents are respectfully reminded to consider the space needed to allow access for other road users, particularly buses, farm machinery, refuse collection lorries and emergency vehicles.
Other matters discussed included ways of reducing traffic speeds in the village and the inconsistencies in decisions made by the Planning Dept at PCC.
The next meeting will be on July 14th at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. All welcome.
There will be no meeting in August.

Barnack Parish Council Report
Present: Mrs J Woollard, (Chairman), Mrs D Dolby, Mrs S Berrill, Mr D Roxburgh, Mr E Barker, Cllr Over, PC McCallum, and Mrs R McCallum (Parish Clerk), Apologies received from Dr I Burrows and Mr H Brassey.
Minutes from Monday 18 May 2009 were approved. Adrian Chapman attended to talk about the Peterborough Neighbourhood Management Scheme and to discuss the way in which PCC is responding to the Sustainable Communities Act. The wall at Southcroft has been repaired, but the hole in the garden needs to be filled. A further letter will be sent to Burghley Estates asking them to install gates at the entrance to the plot in Millstone and to remove the piles of soil before the end of August. There were no objections for the removal of one Scots Pine tree from The Police House, Station Road. A request will be sent to the Fix-It-Van each fortnight. If there are any requests, please contact the Clerk on 01780 740047.
The new parish council website is now well on the way and will soon be up and running. Items from Highways and Village Matters included: Street lights in Bishops Walk, at the entrance to The Old Stackyard in Pilsgate, by Jingle Cottage and opposite the Post Office, have been reported for repair to PCC. Due to the number of vehicles in Orchard Road, PCC will be asked to provide plastic or concrete grid work that can be placed on the verge, allowing grass to come through still, and stop vehicles ruining the grass. Cross Keys will be invited to attend the July meeting. PCC will be asked to cut the growth at the base of the Lime trees on the verge in Bishops Walk to enable residents to use the pavement. The council will request for the overhanging branches alongside The Limes wall to be cut. A resident requested wheelchair access around the Village Information Plaque. The collapsed drain in Allerton Close will be reported again, along with the broken manhole cover in Orchard Road.
Cllr Over reported that there has been a low council tax increase of the last few years, and with the lack of funds being received from planning applications currently being submitted to PCC, an increase in council tax should be expected next year. Due to the lack of finance PCC are currently not spending and are working on savings with profits. The new PCC leader is Marco Cereste, who is keen to work with the villages.
PC McCallum reported that PSCO Buckingham is currently office bound, and is concentrating on sending e-cops etc. Please sign up to this scheme, if you have not done so. PSCO Whittaker has been moved from Westwood and Ravensthorpe to assist with the rural villages, along with part-time officer, PCSO Brown. Inspector Glazebrook is enforcing lorry drivers caught in the weight limit area with a fixed penalty ticket if they do not have a valid reason to be there. Any persons seeing a lorry in the banned area, and if they are willing to provide a statement, should take as much detail as possible including the registration number, date and time seen, and direction of travel. Cllr Over mentioned that he has had complaints about vehicles being parked near to the school gates. PC McCallum will ask PSCO Brown to address this.
The date of the next meeting is Monday 13 July 2009 at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. All are welcome to attend. The full minutes of the meeting are displayed on the notice boards in both Barnack and Pilsgate, and on our website www.barnackparishcouncil.org .
