The Rector’s Letter

Rector: The Reverend G B Austen M.A. M.Phil. KHT

The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford, Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET
Telephone: Stamford 740234 E-mail: austenglobalnet.co.uk

With the help of the Friends of Barnack Church the PCC has just completed a scheme to restore the reredos at a cost of about £14,000.
The reredos is the beautiful series of mosaic panels of angels, which are surrounded and supported by alabaster pillars on the east wall of the church, behind the high altar. The reredos is attributed to the Italian artist/designer Salviati, who based his angels in Barnack on the earlier work of Fra Angelico of Florence, one of the great religious artists of 15th century renaissance. Salviati, I believe, had a London workshop, and I came across a reference in the press recently to some stained glass which came from his workshop.
The Barnack reredos is very lovely; it depicts four angels in fine small mosaic pieces, whilst the alabaster is of a beautiful creamy white with reddish pink streaks. Over the years since its creation the reredos has suffered somewhat from ground movement, damp and the passage of time: the alabaster columns were beginning to move and the zinc trays on which the mosaics rest were starting to buckle under the pressure.
A lengthy restoration began last summer with the removal of the reredos by the firm KG Wrights, under the supervision of Hirst conservation of Laughton in Lincolnshire – a firm of international repute. (The proprietor Liz Hirst, by the way, formerly lived in Barnack.) The mosaic panels needed to be taken away to be attended to by Hirsts in their workshops.
In time for Easter the entire reredos was reassembled, and it was rededicated on Easter Day, when the Friends of Barnack Church presented a cheque to the PCC. It was a great joy to see the reredos restored and cleaned and back in its rightful place for – we hope – another hundred years or so.
This is the story of caring for our parish churches: a never-ending programme of maintenance, which involves the skills and resources of so many people. I suspect many of those who live in our villages don’t have a clue how much time and effort and money goes into maintaining the fabric of such fine old medieval buildings. And yet, unless we as communities do recognise the demands, and do something about them, they are in grave danger.
Church congregations cannot afford the spiralling costs of maintaining large and ancient buildings on their own, so we are immensely grateful to have the Friends of Barnack Church to assist the PCC in its stewardship of our parish church. Many places are not so fortunate, and there is no pot of gold to help us from the Church Commissioners.
If you care about the architectural heritage of our country in general – and our villages in particular – perhaps you might be prepared to do your bit to ensure that our parish churches are maintained. Even if you do not worship in them they are still a part of your heritage, your landscape, your community. You could start by joining the Friends, or by donating to the fabric funds of any of our parishes.

Fr. Glyn Austen

Aubrey’s Charities
May I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kindness to me during Doug’s illness and since his death. It is much appreciated and makes me very sure that we did the right thing in keeping the house after Doug’s father died.
Donations to Hurst Ward in memory of Doug amounted to £829.94 and Aubrey very generously gave me £1000 of his charity money for them as well. The other £1000 he had collected was donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Laura Pollock

Annual Parish Meeting and Parish Council Meeting
This was held on May 13th. The chairman, Keith Lievesley, welcomed City Councillor David Over, PC Norman McCallum, nine residents and all four Parish Councillors.
Road signs: The PCC Highways Dept. has agreed to remove the “Reduce Speed Now” signs and reduce the overall height of the triangular junction signs on the hill and by the bus shelter. We are still negotiating on the 30mph repeater signs and the direction sign near Dovecot Cottage.
Speeding Traffic: Residents are still complaining about this. We are applying for speed-activated warning signs.
Renovation of Church Gates: This is to be done by the Fengate Blacksmith, Mr Mason and paid for by the Millennium Fund.
Car parking for Church and Village Hall: Community Service workers have been asked to cut back overhanging plants and clear the ground between the Church and the Old Rectory gates.
Arriva buses: some services on Tuesdays and Saturdays have been re-routed through Castor. The Parish Council has received no details, but will try to get hold of them.
Planning Application Procedures: Concern was expressed that PCC Planning Officers are not following policies in the Local Plan as regards the Conservation area, listed buildings and house building in back gardens. They appear to ignore the Village Design Statement, the Parish Council and other objectors. Mr Law, Head of Planning Services is to be invited to the next Parish Council meeting to advise on matters the planners will take into account.
Dates of future meetings: meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of alternate months, if possible: July 9th, September 10th, November 12th, January 14th and March 10th. All welcome. Frieda Gosling.

Ufford Ladies
The talk by Ian Burrows on “Genes – why are we what we are?” on April 29th was most interesting and he made the subject comprehensible even to the non-scientists amongst us.
The meeting on Tuesday June 24th will be based at the function room at the White Hart. If it’s fine, meet there at 7.30pm for a historical walk around Ufford, so wear strong shoes. If it’s really wet, there will be an Ufford quiz and a talk about some important landmarks in the village, starting at 7.45pm. Supper, priced at £4.50 will conclude the evening. Please make sure that Jill knows you are coming by June 17th. Frieda

The May meeting of Barnack Parish Council followed the A.G.M. in the Wilfrid Wood Hall on May 12th. The Chairman welcomed the new Parish Clerk, Mrs. Janet Banks.

Barnack and District Horticultural Show 24th August 2003
Apologies for the late arrival of the Show Schedule this year, but hopefully it will not put you off entering the show this year. There are some new classes to enter this year in the section for children and some changes in the adult classes.
We look forward to receiving a record number of entries this year. Do not be shy... enter that class! You never know - you could be the winner.
As well as the Horticultural Show there will be a large Craft Fair in two marquees on the field. The stallholders offer a wide range of crafts, from cross-stitch, home made preserves, painters and beauty products to pressed flowers and jewellery. All are local craftsmen and offer unique, high quality items.
In addition the family day will have the usual stalls such as tombola and carpet bowls, but there will also be an opportunity to try archery with the Bowmen of Rutland, to see if you can kick the fastest football in Barnack or if your are the strongest to name but a few new attractions at the Show this year.
If you are able to help run a stall, put out tables and chairs on the day, or would like to have a stall or game of your own, please give Pat Rubin a call on 01780 740 840. All help gratefully received.
Finally we look forward to welcoming you all on the 24th August from 9am if you are exhibiting and from 12 midday to visit the craft fair and family day.

Our thanks to Susan Jarman for organising such an enjoyable day out to “The Deep” in Hull. Forthcoming outings include a picnic at “Lyvedin” on the 12th August 2003, and a trip to Kew Gardens, the date for which is not yet available.
Ivy Ratcliffe won the raffle.
On conclusion of business we all thoroughly enjoyed a lovely supper, provided by Sandra Jones and the tea hostesses, which was accompanied by wine, courtesy of Peggy Sindall.
The next meeting will be held as usual in the Wilfrid Wood Hall on Tuesday 10th June at 7.30pm. Mr N. Allen will speak about the work of the Woodland Trust.
Please note a change of speaker for the July meeting. Mr John Bennett, will talk about the floating Church at Home Fen. All are welcome at this meeting.

Barnack Community Association
The Annual General Meeting, which took place in the village hall on Thursday 15th May, was well attended. It was the end of one era and the start of another with Bill Harris’s retirement as Chairman of the Association and Graham Dunn being unanimously elected the new Chairman. The Association owes a great debt to Bill and a presentation of an engraved garden seat and two bay trees in pots was made to Bill and Marie Harris by Frank James. Refreshments were served after the meeting and we all look forward to having Graham as the new chairman.

Barnack Cricket Club News
Once again the Colin Swan Memorial Trophy took place at BCC on a glorious May Bank Holiday Monday. Although Barnack, unfortunately, was not included this year, an excellent game of cricket was had between Ketton and Great Oakley. Ketton came away with the spoils on the day winning excitingly by just 7 runs. Match winners were Matt Williams (65) and Mark Mason (6-21). The game was bathed in magnificent sunshine and played in front of a jam-packed ground. One spectator was heard to say, this is “probably the best beer garden in the world!” A great day.

BAINTON AND ASHTON

Bainton and Ashton Family Day
The date - 6th July. The time - 2.30 start. The place - Bainton House gardens. The weather - sunny and warm as it has always been for over 80 years. The occasion:- Family Day, one of the most important village occasions of the year. Apart from stalls, sideshows, games, barrel organ, entertainment, fun, sports for all the family, a chance to meet your neighbours, enjoy the beautiful gardens of Bainton House, have teas, ice-creams, refreshments, play skittles, tombola, raffle, win prizes, watch children getting wet, see tug-of-war (Village vs. rest of world) what more could you possibly want? Bring your family, your friends, a picnic. Above all, be there.

Buttercross Club
On Wednesday May 7th, we had a “Horticultural Evening” when about 30 members and friends met to hear a talk and enjoy a demonstration by Terry Sutton, manager of the new Helpston Garden Centre.
Our ideas about possible ways of filling containers for the patio were radically altered as Terry showed us beautiful pots of many colours and filled them with plants and small shrubs showing how clever combinations can give shape, variety in colour and texture of leaves – no Busy Lizzies or geraniums for us this year.
It was a very interesting evening given to us by someone who was knowledgeable and obviously loved her job. We went home with many ideas for the summer ahead. Our own plant stall also proved a success, though on rather a smaller scale!
We look forward to cultivating our links with Ufford Ladies and attending each other’s meetings whenever possible. Our meeting on Wednesday June 4th will be a talk, with slides, by Mr Tim Appleton, Reserve Manager on Rutland Water and the Nature Reserves. As always, we shall look forward to seeing you there. JM

Bainton & Ashton
You may be aware that Robert Smith who has been one of our postmen for 19 years has now unfortunately left. (Yes – he is the young looking one!) Robert was unfailingly helpful and cheerful and would go out of his way to make sure that the service he provided was excellent. To show our appreciation we thought it would be nice to have a collection for him. Many people have already given – thank you – but if you have missed out and would like to donate please put your money in an envelope and deliver it to Sheila Dalton, 1 Alington Close, Bainton.

Frog Racing
There will be a Frog Racing Evening at Plashetts, Ashton, on Saturday 12 July in aid of Friends of Stamford Hospital appeal and Cancer Research UK. The tickets will be £6.50 to include Fish and Chip supper and all the trimmings. Tickets will be available from Zena Coles (740550) and Sheila Dalton (740019).
