Bishop Frank Writes: A Call To Prayer
The sudden death of our Diocesan Bishop, Ian Cundy, on the evening of 7 May has come as a great shock. His planned early retirement following the diagnosis of mesothelioma had been overshadowed by the news that the cancer had begun to spread again; but none of us could have known that his death would come so quickly.
Our hearts go out to Jo, Robert and Sue with their baby Thor, Paul, Elizabeth and all the family. As we keep them in our prayers we give thanks for Bishop Ian’s life including nearly forty years of ordained ministry. He has been our Bishop since 1996 and under his leadership the diocese has made great progress. We have grown in confidence especially through the flourishing of authorised lay ministry and a renewed engagement in the mission of the God “who so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son…”
In recognition that God is the “One who sends” we had long planned a gathering for prayer on 3 June to support the process to identify Bishop Ian’s successor. That evening of prayer will go ahead with the added intention to keep Bishop Eliud of Bungoma in our prayers as he becomes Archbishop of Kenya on 5 July, at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi. We are delighted that God has sent Bishop Eliud to fulfil this important calling and will continue to pray for God’s blessing of him.
The invitation to pray is open to any and all in the diocese. We will meet from 7.30pm at St. Andrews Church, Rockingham Road, Kettering on 3 June. There will be a natural break at 8.30pm for those who can only come then, or need to leave early. “Prayer stations” will offer focus at different places within the church and light refreshments will be provided. We will finish by 9.30pm.
St Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus, “I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers”. We will gather with a mixture of sadness and gladness as we pray in gratitude to God for his servants, Bishops Ian and Eliud.
I look forward to seeing you on 3 June.
Barnack Church Notes
As you may know, our Priest in Charge, Canon Margaret Venables, is leaving us at the end of July and moving to pastures new. We, and many parishioners and villagers, would like to say a heart-felt thank you for her ministering to us over the last three years. We had been interregnum – that is without a rector - for a long time and our gratitude to her for ending it, has, we hope, been apparent.
We will now be entering another interregnum period and we hope you will support us in continuing the good work of the Parish Church. All the activities, events and projects we have previously mentioned will of course continue.
Open Door Weekend: Family Fun at the Fete Saturday 6th June.
An English Summer would not be complete without the Parish Church Fete. This year we are offering bundles of fun, together with our familiar cake and plant stalls, jumble jars, and local crafts, not forgetting another of Michael Perkins fantastic raffles – listen out for your number coming up.
There will be lots of games for the children, a pit-your-wits treasure hunt around the church and grounds, and of course classic teas with home-made cakes.
As a special opportunity, the Tower and Bell-chamber will be open for guided tours – you’ve heard the sound, now see the mechanisms; you might also take a peek at our re-furbished vestry.
And if you just want to come and relax amongst friends you can do that as well.
It all happens from 2.00pm on Saturday 6th June – D-Day.
Guided Historical Church Tours Sunday 7th June
On Sunday afternoon, we have organised guided tours of the Church with Canon Higham from 2.30pm. The church is one of the top 100 ‘must see’ churches in Britain. This is a chance for the people of Barnack and the surrounding villages to find out why this church is so historically significant, and as always there will be refreshments to keep you going – this time you can partake of a scones, jam and cream tea. We look forward to an action-packed weekend. Petrina and June

Ashton Quiet Lane Status
With the better weather (we hope) now with us we would like to remind everyone travelling through Ashton of its “Quiet Lane” status. This means that pedestrians, bicycles, horses and cars have equal rights when using the road. As this is a single track lane much used by pedestrians, horses and bikes, we would ask that you drive slowly through the village for the safety of everyone. It will much appreciated.

Please put the date of this- in ink- in your diary or on your calendar. It’s not to be missed! There will be a meeting of ideas at Bainton House on 28th May at 7.30pm. If anyone has any spare shrubs or small trees that they do not need we would love them for the Barnack Pre-School garden. Our garden was praised by Ofsted in our last inspection as is even more exciting now as we learn Forest School skills. Please contact Mrs Wright on 740929 for collection.
Do You Live In Bainton Or Ashton?
If so: Our draft entry form for Village of the Year competition is on the notice board. If you would like to add anything please attach a message.
Now that the B1443 has a weight limit restriction, if you see a vehicle over the limit which you suspect is not on local business, take the registration number and send it to our local policemen Norm (norman.mccallum@cambs.pnn.police)
Please do not put your grass clippings into the ditches- or on anyone’s land without permission. Please use the brown bins!
The weight limit on the B1443 is an experiment only and its success and continuation will depend on views from the public- and hauliers. If you feel it has (or hasn’t!) been a success please send your views to Mark Cooper, Highways, Peterborough City Council (email: mark.cooper@peterborough.gov.uk). If there is sufficient support it will be turned into a permanent feature.
The Buttercross Club
At our May meeting Angela Nankervis explained the whole rationale behind the Chinese martial art of Tai Chi which is now practised worldwide for health reasons in the controlled ‘soft style’ of slow movement forms and how it promotes longevity and focuses the body’s energy.
We were spellbound by the Tai Chi demonstration which followed. Along with three other experienced practisers of the art, she gave an enthralling demonstration of a half ‘set’ lasting some 10 minutes which included many of the forms, each one having its own beautifully imaginative name – ‘parting wild horse’s mane’, ‘white snake turns and puts out tongue’, ‘carry tiger to mountain’ and ‘step up to grasp bird’s tail’ to name but a few! Afterwards, we all joined the demonstration and, apart from the sheer enjoyment, we were all commended for our efforts. Angela may well have a few new recruits!
On Wednesday 3rd June we will be going to Hudd’s Mill gardens in Stamford which is a little-known garden right on our doorstep. If you would like to go please contact Ro Yates on 740833; the cost will be £6 per person to include entry, tea and cakes. We plan to meet in the Reading room car park at 5.45pm. JJ
“Bainton Arms ”
Please note that there will be NO gathering on Friday 12th June, but we look forward to seeing everyone again on Friday 10th July.

7.30-9.00pm at The Granary, Manor Farm, Bainton (by kind permission of Michael and Sheila Bratley).
Hunger Lunch
We should like to thank all those who supported the Hunger Lunch in April. It raised £120 which was divided between Hope & Homes for Children and Family Care. We have also raised £54 from the Family Care jar in Barnack Church. It has therefore been possible to send a cheque for £114 to Family Care, the organisation which cares for vulnerable families in our Diocese and which receives a proportion of its income from parish donations. Enrol for pre-school now
Barnack Pre School is now taking registrations for the next academic year and has a few places left for the final half of the current summer term. The pre-school has a wonderful garden setting where forest school skills are now offered. A lot of outdoor play is encouraged, with an excellent range of play resources.
The pre-school were last assessed by Ofsted in December 2007 and had an excellent report. It was given “outstanding” in the category of “helping children to achieve well and enjoy what they are doing”. Staff were found to be “well qualified and skilled”. “Staff know the children very well” and have “warm and trusting relationships between staff and children” and “the partnership between parents and carers is outstanding”. The pre-school also has very good links with Barnack school helping to ease the transition to school in the autumn. Parish Council Notices
Bainton And Ashton Parish CounciL
Your Parish Councillors are: Chris Agnew (chairman-phone 740007) Andy Totten (740381) Judith Morrice (740865) Zena Coles (Ashton-740550) and Jane Franks (740004)
The annual meetings were held on 28th April. Chris Agnew was re-elected as chairman, and all the present councillors will continue to serve. The chairman gave a review of the past year which was so successful that he thought both villages looked as bright and tidy as they ever have been. At last we have a weight restriction on the Helston/Barnack Road and with VAS signs in place this should now be a lot safer. An allotments committeee has been formed with about 20 interested tenants- we just need a suitable site! The washdyke has been further improved and Bainton Green Road, which now has Quiet Lane status will soon become part of a wildlife corridor. We are intending entering the villages into the Cambridgeshire Village of the Year competition- see this issue for further details. The Open Forum produced a number of ideas from those residents who were present- see minutes on the notice board for full details. We are still pusuing with the improved safety of the bus stop and the additional lighting on the pinfold. Next meeting is on 14th July 2009 in the Reading Room at 7.30pm
Ufford`s Annual Parish Meeting May 12th
David Over sent his apologies
Marian Browne gave Ufford Parish Council`s Annual Report:

• She recorded that several local organisations had met the criteria and that grants had been made to Langdyke Countryside Trust, Ufford Park Cricket Club and St Andrew`s Church.
• UPC actively comments on planning applications. Jim Daley, PCC Conservation Officer had visited the council to talk about the Conservation Area Appraisal.
• Members represent the village at PCC Parish Liaison. Greater Peterborough Partnership working groups, Barnack Ward Community Fund meetings, CPALC and Ufford Village Hall Meetings. We had a visit recently from PCC Traffic Management to look at ways of reducing traffic speed through the village.
• Environmental schemes are continuing.
Reports were given from Ufford Park Cricket Club, St Andrew`s Church and the Village Ladies Group.
Regrets were expressed that once again there will be no Garden Fete this year and few opportunities for residents to socialise. We would be pleased to receive some suggestions from residents and local organisations.
