I have been putting off using this column to share my
thoughts about the Iraq crisis, largely because I am not sure that I
know my own mind. My instinct is that much of the country shares my
sense of indecision.
My starting point when responding to the moral issue of war is, I believe,
the authentic Christian one that war is always an evil, is never desirable,
and should be avoided. Every reasonable means to address international
conflicts should be used. However – and there is always a ‘however’
or a ‘but’ – I am equally certain that Christian ethics recognise that
sometimes war may be necessary as the lesser of two evils. Sometimes
to do nothing in the face of danger, aggression, corruption or oppression
is worse thank doing something, even if the something means conflict.
This principle is applied constantly in human affairs. If someone is
a serious threat to society through criminal activity we incarcerate
them by force – it’s called prison. Parents teach their young children
how to behave, and reserve the sanction of a smack. Sometimes the police
have to use force to stop violent rioters from causing hurt or damage.
And nations must have the right to defend themselves against aggressors
by taking up arms. A Christian does not have to be a pacifist: we live
in a real world, not in an idealistic Utopia in which everyone is kind
and reasonable and does the right thing. There are times when right
and good have to be struggled for. It is sad but it’s true.
Which brings us then to Iraq. In principle, if the UK sees Iraq as a
serious threat to its security or the security of the civilisation of
which we are a part, then war might be justifiable – not desirable,
but justifiable. The Tony Benn school of thought is, frankly, bizarre:
despotic, megalomanic dictators do not just go away if you are nice
to them.
The key ethical question for us, then, has to be whether or not there
is a moral case for war; and I suspect that most of us simply don’t
know. Our constitutional arrangements allow a Prime Minister – if he
can carry the Cabinet with him – to declare war using the royal prerogative,
without recourse to Parliament. So the very people we entrust in our
democracy to make decisions of importance on our behalf may be excluded
from the most important decision of all if a government so decides.
The role of the United Nations is claimed by many to be crucial, and
maybe it is, but sadly the UN is not a place where one can always expect
to find much open-handed wisdom; it is too often a bargaining house
where cynical self-interest, not principle, rules. But we have a parliament,
which we elect, which is ultimately accountable to us, the people. Our
MPs are not delegates, and they will follow their conscience, but I
for one – in my own deep uncertainty and indecision over this matter
– would prefer my representatives to have the opportunity to debate
and decide when issues of such significance arise.

usual custom in Church on Mothering Sunday.
Ufford Parish
Council Meeting, January 21st
Money is currently available through the Rural Transport Initiative
and some kind of flexible, demand-responsive community transport may
be forthcoming. Parish Councils have to show that there is a demand
for such a scheme and it was agreed that a questionnaire should be sent
to every household. Residents are asked to return their questionnaire
by the end of February.
Complaints are still being received about dog excrement on the playing
field, footways and verges. There is a bin for dog waste on the playing
field and one at the bottom of the village is long overdue. Peterborough
City Council have been reminded again. Two notices have been placed
by the gates to the playing field and 7 on lampposts in Main Street
and Newport Way reminding dog owners of their obligations.
We have also received complaints about litter thrown out of car windows.
We are planning a litter-pick and the Council’s Fix-it van is being
asked to help us keep our verges litter-free.
Ufford’s Village Design Statement was adopted as Supplementary Planning
Guidance on December 5th and is now printed. A copy will be delivered
to every household. Please consult it before any building work is undertaken
and keep it for future reference.
Current planning applications were discussed.
The Parish Council apologises to Mr R Graham for any embarrassment caused
with regard to the need for planning permission for his double garage.
The Parish Council is negotiating with the appropriate authorities in
connection with the recurrent power cuts, low water pressure, flooding
of roads in and out of Ufford, fly tipping, plants overhanging footways
and gays in Southey Woods.
The next meeting will be at 8pm on Tuesday, March 18th. All are welcome
to attend. Frieda Gosling
Ufford Ladies
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, March 25th at 7.45pm in the Village
Hall. After a short AGM, Ian Graham will be talking about “The Geldermalsen”,
a ship, carrying the Nanking cargo, which sank. All are welcome.
We are all invited to the talk on hats at the Buttercross Club on Wednesday,
March 5th at Bainton Reading Room, starting at 7.45pm. Frieda Gosling
Ufford Millennium Fund
We have paid all our bills and, as we feared, the balance is insufficient
to buy an attractive wrought-iron village sign. Any suggestions?

Barnack Baptist Church
Our All Age service on Sunday 2nd March will mark the first
birthday of Barnack Baptist Church. Please come along and join us on
that day and share in the birthday cake after the service! For our other
services during March, see the inside front cover of the magazine.
“Y” Course
This course, run by Barnack Baptist Church, was completed prior to Christmas,
with 14 local people attending at least one of the sessions. We enjoyed
good food and lively debate. Many issues relating to God, Jesus, and
the Church were explored. The video and discussions clearly answered
many important questions but also raised many new ones, some of which
were left unresolved. At the end of the course one participant commented:
“Thanks to the Y course I now recognise that there is a path leading
somewhere, I am not sure where it leads, or if I want to go along it,
but I am now aware of its existence.” We aim to run another “Y” course
in the autumn. However in order to discuss some of the issues raised
on “Y” together with some of the big issues facing the world, society
and individuals, we extend an open invitation to “Christianity Explored”.
Christianity Explored
What is happening to the world? War, famine, social disorder, civil
unrest, terrorism! Does God care? This is one of the many topics that
will be discussed on a “Christianity Explored” course run by Barnack
Baptist Church starting on Wednesday March 19th at 7-30pm at Barnack
Cricket Club. The evening will begin with a meal followed by a live
presentation and discussion. Come along and be prepared to be challenged
and to be challenging. For further details please call Graham Dunn on
01780 749068.
Dick Feroze
Dick Feroze, of 19 Bainton Road, Barnack, died suddenly at 3pm on Monday
3rd February 2003 from a heart attack whilst taking his daily walk in
the village. The funeral service was held at Bretton Crematorium on
Monday 10th February 2003 and was attended by many family members, local
friends and business colleagues from across the world.
His wife, Joan, and two children, Ashley and Karen, would like to thank
everyone for their kind thoughts and support for which they are
extremely grateful. Ashley Feroze

Stall on Saturday, 1st March at 10.00 to 11 30 am.

village hall starting at 8pm prompt. As well as testing your wits against
our two quizmasters, a fish and chip supper will be provided. Bring
your own drinks. Tickets for the evening cost £6.00. For Tickets
please contact Liz James.
Murder Mystery Evening
Over 100 detectives came along to witness the events leading up to the
bloody demise (off-stage!) of the proprietor of Rendell’s Holiday Camp.
The OARS Murder Mystery Team played the parts of the management and
staff of this downbeat holiday camp on the south coast of England, and
we, the audience, were the unfortunate campers. A tale unfolded of the
aspirations, relationships and activities of holiday camp staff leading
up to the murder. All the suspects had viable motives but after much
cross-questioning by the audience, the guilty party was revealed.
The Murder Mystery evening at Barnack School Hall in February was a
big success and a great time was had by all. The sale of tickets and
the raffle raised a fantastic £650 for Barnack School Association
funds, which are used to provide resources, improve facilities and support
children’s activities at Barnack Primary School. This was definitely
an event worth repeating next year – watch this space.
Barnack Cricket Club Quiz Nights
The very best fun you can have on a Sunday night…with your clothes on
that is! Come and sample great beer while village celebrity-gazing and
a chance to win cash prizes every week. Go on, just come along as a
team of 4 or as a couple and join a team there for an hilarious evening
that will set you up for the week. Great evening guaranteed every Sunday
from 8.30pm – 10.30pm.
Barnack Bowls Club
It won’t be long now before the start of the outdoor bowling season
and members wishing to play in the League Teams, Club Sixty or the Friendlies
are urged to go along to the Cricket Club on Sunday morning, 23rd March
from 11 am onwards when the team captains will be waiting to register
them. Margaret Broadbelt will also be more than happy to receive subscriptions
for the 2003 season.
The winners of the February 200 Club Draw were:
No 93 Mr Reg Thompson £25; No 34 Mr Gordon Pateman £15;
No 80 Mrs Eileen Pateman £10.
Barnack Horticultural Show
This has been organised and run by June Woollard who has put in a great
deal of hard work for the past few years. Since June has retired
and the Society is presently without a chairman, the existing committee
has reluctantly decided not to run a Horticultural Show and Family Day
this year and intends to hold an open meeting in the Autumn and invite
as many people as possible to discuss the format for future Shows
and to take on board new people, hopefully from the younger members
of both Barnack and its surrounding villages.
Barnack Parish Council, 10th Feb
The Chairman welcomed Mr Graeme Law, Head of Planning Services at Peterborough
City Council. Mr Law outlined ways in which Barnack Parish Council can
most effectively put their views across to, and work with the Planning
Services Department. He also offered suggestions that related specifically
to the Airey House site on Uffington Road.
Rural Transport Partnership - A draft questionnaire was circulated to
determine the needs of the Village in terms of public transport. It
was decided that instead Ben Rushby from Peterborough City Council should
be invited to attend the March Annual Parish Meeting, so that he could
talk to the village about the Rural Transport Partnership. There is
money available for villages, but the public has to decide on the needs
required. These needs could be safe cycle routes in and between villages,
quiet road schemes to ensure that the public can walk with safety on
their own country roads, rural transport or a number of other issues.
The Clerk is to address the following issues:
Request that OAPs receive a concession for the removal of bulk waste
Request Vehicle Activated Signs along the B1443
Request that the leaves are cleared from around the village
Obtain quotes for notice boards for the bus shelters
Maternity Leave: The Clerk is to start 18 weeks Maternity Leave at the
end of April. If you are interested in this post, please write
to: Kate Francis, 24 Orchard Road, Barnack, PE9 3DP or phone 740047.
Dog Mess: The amount of Dog Mess around the village has dramatically
increased. Dog owners are requested to carry a bag to clear up the excrement
of their own dog and asked not to allow their pets to mess on footpaths
and verges in the village, as this is a serious health hazard.
Southey Wood Wardens:Two wardens are required to help look after Southey
Wood. Duties involve unlocking the car park each mornng, a brief
health and safety inspection and litter pick. Then locking the
car park in the evening, and any other minor duties as required.
The job is shared between two people, based on one hour per day, on
a rota of 7 days on and 7 days off. A notice has been displayed
on the Village Hall Notice Board. For further details, please contact
Mr Kevin Stannard on 01780 444394.
Barnack W.I. Meeting
Mrs June Graham welcomed 27 members and 1 visitor to the February meeting.
Birthday Buttonholes were presented to Beryl Burrows, Sheila Berrill,
Mary Perkins, Mary Seymour-Smith and Jessie Goodacre.
Our sincere condolences were offered to Mrs Laura Pollock on the sad
loss of her husband.
A meal at the Millstone in Barnack on the 4th March has been arranged.
Please meet at 7pm for dinner at 7.30pm.
After concluding the general business we were treated to an evening
of Birdsongs in our local area by Mr P Rudkin.
Mr Rudkin showed slides of some beautiful birds, accompanied by tapes
of their songs.
Judith Browne won the Raffle, and the Competition by Jessie Goodacre
with Joan Wilding and Mary Seymour- Smith as 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The next meeting is on Tuesday March 11th at 7.30pm, when the speaker
will be Mr Whetstone who will talk about village Life in Ryhall between
1900-2000.
New members are always welcome.
We are organising a coach trip to ‘The Deep’ in Hull on Tuesday 6th
May leaving Barnack at 8am. The Deep is a new Submararium, a dramatic
fusion of aquaria and state of the art interactives telling the story
of the world’s oceans. If you would like to join us on this trip the
cost will be £8.50 coach & £6.00 (£4.00 OAP).
Please contact Susan Jarman 01780 740104.
