Morning Prayer will be said at 8.30 am at St John’s Barnack on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and on Thursday at 7.00am.
A Service of Prayer for Peace and Justice will be said in St Mary’s Bainton at 9.00am on Tuesdays, followed by coffee.
Prayer Group: Mondays 6.00pm Ufford Church
Children’s Church: Children’s Church meets on the 1st, 2nd and 4th Sun of every month, during the service. Children of all ages are welcome.
Family Services: A Family Service is held in St John’s Barnack on every 3rd Sunday. This service is specially for families and their children and is not a communion service.

And Fun Was Had By All!
Over fifty locals and visitors braved the winter weather to join in the annual Friends of Rutland Sailability annual quiz, held at the White Hart, Ufford, on 20 January.
With searching questions and a frustrating scoring system to contend with, the nine teams coped admirably! The special round involving team amalgamations and a great deal of bartering for answers led to people mixing with each other and generally having a fun time! Last year’s winners did it again - ‘though it was a close run thing! Names withheld to protect the innocent!
Ben and his team at The White Hart generously provided light refreshments at half time, plus a mega voucher for the raffle. Thanks to the persuasive powers of Peter, Paul and Jim, over £400 was raised for Rutland Sailability. Frieda Gosling kept the question master under some sort of control and I would like to thank her and everyone who helped, donated prizes to the raffle and the teams who supported the evening.

The Art of Flower Arranging and Floral Design
Since Tudor times, and earlier, people have created new beauty from the treasures of the natural world. By using flowers and materials from the garden, the hedgerows, the meadows and the verges we have decorated our homes and churches, and expressed our thanks and our love.
Here in Barnack we are starting our own flower arranging group. Our first meeting, on 15th April at 7.30pm in Barnack Church, will include a pedestal and a smaller arrangement, both demonstrated by Pat Simmonds of Oakham. During refreshments we will raffle the smaller arrangement.
Everyone is most welcome, and tickets at £3 (to cover flowers and expenses) are available from Joan Laycock (740267), Cynthia Dailey (740418), Petrina McCarey, or on the night.
Future meetings will include practice get-togethers, interspersed with demonstration evenings.
We hope beginners and experienced arrangers alike will be able to share ideas and inspire a host of floral delights; and we hope friends will enjoy meeting together and exploring their artistic talents.

Bainton Buttercross Club
February Meeting & AGM: This is the start of the Buttercross club’s New Year and new committee. We thanked the old committee for an enjoyable year of good speakers, trips out and to the theatre and well attended social events. There was a lively debate about where to donate our charity money and this has still to be finalised.
Fiona Hardy then spoke about how life can begin at 40 if you choose to start running marathons!! Her first 10 mile road run decided with 6 friends after a few glasses of wine on a New Years Eve was a great success so they decided to apply for the London Marathon. Of the 6, Fiona was the only one to get a place!
Undeterred (bit of poetic licence there!) she started to train. She ran round Rutland Water and then from Stamford to Rutland Water and round Rutland Water (as someone who has trouble getting round Rutland Water on a bike, I found this totally amazing!). She then went to London to get her chip for her shoe - this is to stop people cheating by using the buses, tubes etc and to establish where each runner is at all times in case of problems or injury.
Eventually the day arrived and she set off with 35,000 other people. She raised over £3000 for Cancer Research for this first Marathon as many people weren’t sure she would finish! Since then she has run the London Marathon again, walked the Great Wall of China in 2006 and trekked London to Kilimanjaro in 2008 and Annapurna in 2009. She plans to do the Coast to Coast in 2010, which should be like a walk in the park!
This was an inspiring talk about how to raise large amounts of money for charity – in Fiona’s case Cancer Research and the Sue Ryder Hospice - by pushing yourself to your limits.
The next meeting is on March 3rd when Mark Cross will speak to us about ‘The work of the Magistracy’.

Barnack W.I.
The February meeting was effectively the first of the year as we had to cancel the January meeting because of inclement weather. It was also the first to be chaired by our new President, Mary Boyall. We had an excellent talk from Tessa Jackson on the art of reflexology. We were all provided with the detailed map of our feet which is necessary for practising reflexology. Tessa answered many questions and also demonstrated her skills on some of the more willing members of the audience. Tessa was thanked by Adrienne Collins. We also heard that one of our number, the courageous Sue Chowings, is shortly to participate in a mini triathlon to raise funds for our institute, and so was seeking sponsorship. Finally members were reminded that the next Clare Group meeting, which we are hosting, is to be on Thursday, April 22nd. We were all encouraged to support this event when the guest speaker will be Colin Young.

Wednesday March 17 @ Bainton Reading Room 7.30pm
GEOFF HODGE is a freelance gardening and horticultural writer and broadcaster and he will be the speaker for the first social evening of the Bainton & Ashton Allotment Association. Geoff has just written the vegetable section for the RHS Allotment Handbook which will be on sale February 2010 and will be talking to us on Growing Your Own Vegetables. Everyone is welcome. Barnack Pre-School
Barnack Pre-School has recently been given very positive feedback from Peterborough City Council, which evaluates each setting’s performance against the local authority and the national average. The Pre-School consistently outperforms both the local and national average in every category and often by a considerable margin.
This is a great achievement for our very capable team of staff. Catharine Wright, as senior supervisor, is one of a very small proportion of Pre-School practitioners to have the Early Years Professional status, which enables her to instil best practice across the setting. Mrs Wright is also qualified in forest school skills and is a very enthusiastic proponent of the outdoor learning style that this ethos involves.
The Pre-School is a very happy place with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. If you have a pre-school aged child and would like to visit, you are very welcome. It is open Monday to Friday 9-12pm (term time). Please call either the bookings secretary on 740017 or the Barnack School reception on 740265.

Pre-School Quiz 13th March & Appeal for help in fund raising
Barnack Pre-School will be holding its annual quiz night at Barnack Village Hall on Saturday 13th March at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 per head, please bring your own drinks and nibbles. Tables of up to eight people. This is always a good night out, so if you are interested please call Sophie Moore on 740 010. This is one of several fund raising events planned in the coming months to help raise funds for the Pre-School. As a parent-run charity, the Pre-School always needs to raise funds and particularly now, as our new building project gains momentum. Please call Sophie on 740010 if you feel you can offer any assistance towards the project or fund raising. For example, your employer may have funds to support local community projects. Your support is much appreciated.

Village Ladies’ Group
On Tuesday the 27th of January two representatives of Shaws Coaches gave an enjoyable talk on the history of the company and it’s role today, it made us think of the warmer days to come.
Tuesday 23rd of February is our lunch- time meal at the Lady Ann’s Hotel, we will meet at 12.15 for 12.30 you are welcome to join us, please ring Frieda Gosling on 01780-740343 if you wish to come.
Tuesday the 23rd of March is our A.G.M, and a representative from the East Anglian Air Ambulance will collect the £350 we have collected over the year; once again visitors are very welcome, we meet at Ufford Village Hall at 7.45pm.
On Tuesday the 27th of April we have a speaker from The Evergreen Care Trust in the Stamford area, this will be an interesting talk on how this charity has grown since it started in 2005 and the excellent services it provides for senior citizens, not only in Stamford but in the immediate locality. Please come along and join us at Ufford Village Hall at 7.45pm.we look forward to seeing you.

The Children’s Society
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the house box collection for 2009.
I have banked on your behalf £574.96 which is slightly less than last year, but five new people have agreed to take a box. I do have some spare boxes and would be delighted to hear from anyone who would be prepared to take one in which to collect loose change. The boxes are emptied annually in January and all money raised goes towards various projects run by The Children’s Society for the benefit of children in difficult circumstances. June Graham 740387

Friends of Barnack Church.
The Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Barnack Church will be held on Monday, March 22nd, at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. Refreshments will be served and there will also be some archive material on display. The “Friends” remit is to support the PCC in caring for the fabrics of our ancient church. Garden Birds in January
Many of our favourite garden birds would not have survived the January snow and ice without our help. Several observers commented on food sources which attracted particular birds, such as the 26 Redwings on a small crab apple tree and another group of Redwings feeding on the last of the Bramley apples put out for them in the snow. 5 bullfinches were seen, after an absence several years, pecking at Prunus buds.
Thanks are due to the 7 families who sent me their records, 3 in Barnack, 3 in Ufford and 1 in Helpston. The longest list came from Cameron Pilson, age 11, from Barnack who recorded a total of 22 different kinds of birds seen in the garden itself, with another 6 seen flying overhead or heard.
The full list is as follows:
The most common birds, seen in all 7 gardens, were Blackbird, Blue Tit and Robin, followed by Collared Dove in 6 and Dunnock, House Sparrow, Starling and Wood Pigeon seen in 5 gardens. In 4 gardens Goldfinch, Great Tit and Wren were recorded, followed by Fieldfare, Greenfinch, Long Tailed Tit, Redwing and Pheasant in 3. Bullfinch, Chaffinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, Lesser Redpoll and Magpie appeared in 2. Only one recorded Blackcap, Carrion Crow, Feral Pigeon and Song Thrush.

Barnack Methodist Chapel
It was good to see you again at our first Coffee Morning of 2010 and it raised the very welcome sum of £144.55. The next one will be held on Saturday,
6 March at the usual time of 10 am to 11 am and we very much hope to see you there .

Barnack 60’s & 70’s Disco
The disco held on Saturday February 6th raised £410 for church funds. The Parochial Church Council wishes to thank everyone who worked so hard to make the evening such a success. Special thanks go to Graham Fletcher and Su Wilkinson for the wonderful dance music; to Stuart McCarey and David Laycosk for manning the bar and all those who supported the event by buying tickets, attending and /or providing food. Look out for furthern disco dates for your diary!
Haiti Earthquake Appeal
The raffle held at the disco raised £60. This amount, together with donations given after the service at Bainton Church on Sunday 7th meant that a total of £385 was sent to DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal. Ann Davies.

Barnack Baptist Church
Over the past few weeks Barnack Baptist Church has been following a programme of Christian Basics, each Sunday we have been looking at a different aspect of Christian faith, God’s grace, Who is Jesus? Why did he die? On Wednesday evenings we have then held discussion groups to explore further these different aspects of faith. On March 14th we will be joining with our Methodist and Anglican friends to celebrate Mothering Sunday together. This is a family service that takes place in Barnack School Hall at 10-30 am. We start our Holy Week programme on 28 March with a visit from Rev. David Rogers the Regional Minister who will be leading our service. Through the week we will be meeting for a fellowship meal and on Good Friday we will be holding a special event to reflect on the events of 2000 years ago. Our Easter Day service will be a family service followed by an Easter Egg Hunt on the School Field to which all are invited.

Junior Youth Club
This will take place on Friday 26 February. It is an opportunity for young people in school years 5 and 6 to become familiar with Youth Club and help them in their transition to senior Youth Club when they move on to secondary school. Meets at 7-00 to 8-30 pm in the Village Hall.

Youth Club – Barnack Village Hall
Youth Club is a great opportunity for the young people in our community to maintain the friendships and contacts they developed at primary school even though many attend different secondary schools. It is well attended with over 30 youngsters aged between 11 and 16 on the register. Youth Club dates for March are Friday 5th and Friday 19th 7-30 – 9-00 pm. Come along for a chat, play pool, table tennis, Wii, dance mat, craft activities and a short talk. We usually finish the evening with some optional team games. Young people often receive a bad press but the leaders of Barnack Youth Club have only ever received courtesy and respect from these young people – who knows they may make a better job of the future than we have of the past! Youth Club is run by Barnack Baptist Church.

Little Lambs Toddler Group
Little Lambs is growing! Since September there has been a steady increase in the number of carers and children coming to Little Lambs. Each Tuesday morning from 10-00 to 12-00 up to 15 carers and their children meet in the Village Hall, there are lots of toys, games and books and activities for the children. We serve drinks and snacks (cakes for the adults – something healthier for the children). We have a bible story time and then lots of fun as we clear the hall of toys and the older children whizz around on tiny trikes. It is a great opportunity for carers to meet and chat and for the children to begin to explore the joys and challenges of mixing with others. Little Lambs is great fun for everyone, all are welcome. Little Lambs is run by Barnack Baptist Church.

We love Chocolate party!
Tuesday 16th March is the date of the next foundation to year 4 party. Come along and decorate Chocolate Easter eggs, play lots of chocolaty games, hear a bible story, dance and generally have lots of fun! The party will be held in Barnack school hall from 5.30 to 7.00. Alms House Vacancy
In the matter of the Charity known as the Poor’s Estate in the Parishes of Barnack and Southorpe.
One of the Alms Houses in Millstone Lane, Barnack has become vacant. It is a house with one bedroom and has all the normal facilities. Barnack Cricket Club Quiz
The Quiz held on February 6th raised £924. 00. for the new pavilion to be built at the cricket club in Barnack. A very sincere thanks goes to all those who contributed to the success of the evening; special thanks go to the Harris family who wrote, delivered and marked the quiz and also to the supper hostesses and their guests whose hard work was much appreciated. PARISH COUNCIL

Annual Servicing of gas appliances.
Barnack Parish Council would like to remind home owners to service their gas appliances annually. There is a danger that if this is not done, the appliance could emit carbon monoxide, as recently experienced by a local resident.

Ufford Parish Council Meeting February 10th 2010
David Over, Ward Councillor, PC Norm Mc Callum and Nick Vergette attended the meeting.
1. The Ufford Resource Guide has been updated and will be delivered to newcomers to the village. It gives information about the village and its services. Please let one of the parish councillors know if you have not received a copy.
2. The parish council has been without a fourth member for several years and we are hoping that Nick Vergette will decide to join us and he will be co-opted at the next meeting. This will follow his family tradition as his grandfather was a parish councillor for many years. Nick has always lived in the village and we shall be glad of his local knowledge. He will be well placed to represent residents who live on Main Street.
3. Norm gave us a crime report and it is good to know that we are so law-abiding. There was just one theft from a vehicle in the past month in the village. Norm explained why we see less of him than in the past. He now is responsible for 21 villages from Thornhaugh to Northborough. He had an accident nearly a year ago but hopes to be back to full policing duties by March. He reminded us that he will be happy to train volunteers to use the speed check equipment. Please let us know if you would like to volunteer as speeding traffic concerns us all. The council is continuing its campaign for speed warning lights at the Walcot Road and Marholm Road entrances to the village.
4. We hope some of you will join our EASTER EGG HUNT, followed by a gentle stroll through Southey Woods on Sunday March 27th. Meet at 2pm in the car park by the main entrance on Langley Bush Road. The Easter Eggs will be hidden by the Easter Rabbit and the event is being led by Brian Armstrong, PCC Wildlife Officer, and Frieda Gosling, Ufford Parish Councillor.
5. Please note that the next UPC meeting will be on Tuesday March 3rd, a week earlier than usual. Time, 7.30 at Ufford Village hall. All welcome.

Barnack Parish Council
The meeting held on Monday 8 February 2010 in the Wilfrid Wood Hall was attended by Mrs J Woollard (Chairman), Mr E Barker, Mrs S Berrill, Dr I Burrows, Mrs D Dolby, Mr D Roxburgh, Cllr D Over, PC N McCallum, 3 members of the public and Mrs R McCallum (Parish Clerk).

Members of Cross Keys Homes, Peterborough City Council representatives, a Parish Council member and residents met in Orchard Road recently to discuss parking and road maintenance issues. Six new trees have been planted on the B1443 between Barnack and Pilsgate to complete the avenue together with a replacement hedge on Uffington Road. Letters will be written to PCC regarding the removal of the 401/402, Kings School/Morrisons buses, the purpose of Neighbourhood Councils and the date on which the B1443 weight limit will become permanent. Potholes on village roads will be reported to Peterborough City Council together will a request for the verge on Stamford Road and footpaths on Walcot Road, Millstone Lane and Bainton Road to be cleared. A proposal that name of the road for the new Uffington Road development will be Lammas Field will be forwarded to PCC.

The Fund Raising group of the Sports Pavilion Committee has raised now £25293, but work cannot begin on the new sports pavilion on the cricket club ground until 106 funding is available, at the commencement of work by David Wilson Homes in Uffington Road. The Community Leadership group are continuing the work of surveying hedge rows. The hedges to be surveyed this year are on the Mill Road, the Green Drift and up to Summerhouse Corner. More volunteers are urgently needed to help those who volunteered after the Bugs Life talk last autumn. Guidance will be given to the group so if you are interested please contact the parish clerk on 740047 or June Woollard on 740276. Six more wooden benches have been purchased. The one for Barnack will be located at the edge of the cricket club ground.

A report from the Rural Forum meeting highlighted Parish Council’s involvement with Peterborough City Council regarding their comments for planning applications. The next meeting will include Rural Exception sites, Rural Business and Sunday bus services. The next Neighbourhood Panel Meeting will be held at Arthur Mellows Village College on 4 March. PC McCallum reported that in January 4 crimes had been recorded with 26 calls for services in the Barnack and Pilsgate villages. The next meeting is on Monday 8 March 2010 at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. All are welcome. A full copy of these minutes are on the village notice boards.
