Pause for Though from Parish Priest:
Canon Margaret Venables
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford,
Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET
‘And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, ‘Truly I say to you, that unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’
This is, perhaps, one of the most familiar Bible texts and I remember it very clearly from my own childhood – it went with a picture of Jesus sitting with a child on his lap and surrounded by many other children – not an adult in sight! Perhaps it is pictures like these that have caused so much confusion about the place of children within the church. I have to say that the comment that makes me most angry, beyond anything else that people have to say about the church, is that children have to be properly considered because they are the future of the church. I just want to shout, ‘ NO! the children are important because they are the church now.’ Each child is as important to the community as each adult and they have so much to teach us.
A recent book called; ‘ The Spirit of the Child’ explains the fascinating results of a three year investigation into children’s spirituality. The book asks such questions as: ‘What is the nature of children’s spirituality?’, ‘What kinds of spiritual; experiences do children have?’ , ‘Can anything be done to nurture the spirit of the child?’. The authors show, what most people who work with them will tell you, that children are capable of having profound beliefs and meaningful spiritual experience from a very early age. The authors go on to argue for greater attention to be given to the nurturing of children’s spirituality as the true source of social and moral cohesion for the future. One example that is given in the book is of an interview with a 6-year old called Freddie.
Freddie is a child who finds it difficult to make and keep friends, but says that he thinks, ‘God’s the kindest person I know, because he never shouts or tells you off, because he never even speaks to you unless you’re dead.’ In a later conversation he had seen a film of Snow White and thinking about the good world that he thought God had made ( apart from the bits his Dad had built) he said, ‘The earth’s so good, but sometimes somebody feels really sad, and like on Snow White, you know, Grumpy like, he feels sad and grumpful…. But when he gets into knowing about life, he thinks more about it, about Snow White being in trouble by the Evil Queen, then he cares and when she dies he, then he really cares, and when she comes back alive again, he cares even more. So, I think, Grumpy and Snow White learned about how clever and good life can be. At the start he doesn’t know anything about life, so he doesn’t like life and the planet of God and really later on he finds out all about it…Sometimes I get really grumpy at school and then I thought about how life could be if I started to try and not be grumpy no more.’ Clearly in this can be seen hints of Freddie’s emerging ‘God-consciousness’ and an awareness of spiritual values. There are many other quotations from children in this book from one little boy who describes what he believes to be an encounter with the Holy Spirit as a ‘bishopy kind of alien’. And a ten year old girl who describes the presence of God: ‘ When I am upset or worried about something….it feels all comfortable and tingly … I don’t know .. it just … can’t describe it … it’s just weird … it’s nice. Churches remind me, and I feel all that when I go to the church .. same feeling.’
I am sure there is something for us to learn from these brief quotations and so much more from our encounters with the children in our midst. The children in our Children’s Church often amaze us with the things they produce and their comments on them. We had very good workshops over the Easter period and if you haven’t been into the Barnack church recently do go and see the crosses the children made which are hanging on the walls and the hanging from another Sunday’s work. These children really are the lifeblood of our church. Thank God for each of them

Ragwort Round-up – Sunday 20th May 10.30am
This year there are two events which will be of interest to everyone in the village who is concerned about the spread of Ragwort, a plant which is poisonous when eaten by horses.
The first one takes place on Sunday 20th May starting at 10.30am, meeting at the lay-by opposite Bishop’s Walk (nearest the Millstone).
The best way to control Ragwort is to pull it up before the flowers turn to seed, and this will be the aim of the ‘round-up’.
Many hands make light work, so we hope to see as many people from the village as possible helping on the day. Just come along for an hour or two, and as an incentive, refreshments are being provided! Gloves and instruction will also be supplied on the day.
The second day will be on Saturday 9th June. If successful, this will be made an Annual event and could go a long way towards helping to keep control over this troublesome weed.
There is no need to book for these events, just turn up on the day, but if you would like more information, ring me on Stamford 752796.

PLEASE HELP
New Parish Magazine Collator Needed
Could you spare a couple of hours just twice a year? After 15 year’s sterling service, Derek and Ann Whiteman have decided to take a break from the collators’ rota for the Parish News. We are therefore seeking a replacement team.
The task is simply to fold and staple the magazine (they are ready collated) on a set Friday morning, just twice a year. This wouldn’t take more than a couple of hours and if you are able to get together a team of people to help, it will take far less.
If you would like to know more or if you think you could get together a team of volunteers (or would be willing to do it alone!), please contact Jill Miller 740308 or EMAIL Lisa Chadwick

Tickets for this event are £10 each from Helen on 740091.
On Thursday 17th May the Fayre will be open from 10am - 3pm. Admission on the door will be £3. There will be a wonderful selection of stalls, bring and buy stall, coffee and cakes, and lunches.

Do come along – meet your neighbours – enjoy an interesting circular walk – and feel it doing you good! Everyone is invited to join in.
Buttercross Club
The splendour of the Taj Mahal contrasted starkly with the squalor and deprivation in which 80 per cent of India’s population continue to live. Sixty years after India’s independence from Britain, there is still a strong legacy left by us but, sadly, there continues to be a vast gulf between rich and poor. Brian Holdich is sponsoring a pupil at a school which, despite very limited resources, tries its best to give a basic education to poverty-stricken children - the enthusiasm shown by every pupil and their eagerness to learn is a shining example of hope in the face of adversity. We were touched by his commitment.
Our next meeting on 2nd May will be a tour round Rasells Nursery in Little Bytham, followed by a pub supper. If you’d like to join us please call Ro Yates on 740833. JJ
Breathing Workshop

Once again, many thanks to all of you who came along to support our April Coffee Morning which raised £142.89. We look forward to seeing you again on Saturday, 5 May from 10 - 11 am.
You are also warmly invited to join us for our Chapel Anniversary Service which will be held on Sunday, 6 May at 6 pm and will be conducted by Rev Brian Lewis.
Barnack Bowls Club
The winners of the March draw of the 200 Club were:
No 69 Marie Harris £25
No 38 Barbara Knights £15
No 33 Peter Hutchins £10
Ufford Ladies
The AGM was held on the evening of 27th March. The chairperson and several members of the committee retired after giving the Ufford Ladies Group long and valuable service. Thank you Jill, Laura and Wendy. A new committee was formed and we look forward to seeing members and friends at our meetings once a month on Tuesday evening. New members are most welcome. April 24 will be our next meeting. It will be held at Ufford Village Hall at 7.45pm and Frieda Gosling will talk about our local charity for 2007/8, which is Anna’s Hope.
On May 22nd, Ollie Mayhew will give us an insight into his World Challenge in Tanzania. This promises to be an interesting talk by a very enterprising young man. The evening starts at 7.45pm in Ufford Village Hall. Everyone is welcome.
Bainton And Ashton Family Day
Surely it’s not that time of year already? Not quite, but all the best things in life need some preparation! Bainton and Ashton family Day will be held this year on Sunday July 8th to be held as always in the beautiful grounds of Bainton House. Once again, it is hoped that it will be one of the major highlights of the local calendar, so please make sure you are not on holiday that week!
Everyone is welcome, especially those from local villages- bring your family and friends along too to sample a quintessentially English Village Event. We are having a get-together to make plans and this will be held at Bainton House on Wednesday 23 May at 7.30pm. All those interested in helping out on the day, or just providing new ideas, will be very welcome, so please come along if you can. Any queries ring 740097.
A Roof For Mwangalaba
Mary and Tony Gowers would like to express how grateful they are for the tremendous response they have received to help the village in Malawi they are trying to support. Almost £600 has come in so far, which will be winging its way to the project shortly. As previously promised, every penny donated will go directly to the organisers- even the bank charges to get it there are covered.
Mary and Tony’s nephew Daniel and his wife are voluntarily overseeing the building (he’s an architect) and the money will be spent on building safe weather-proof homes for disabled adults and children who have been turned out of their homes. Thanks also to others who have promised to raise funds by holding events. This is an ongoing project, so if you would like to help ring 740097 or send a donation to 1, Bainton Gardens, Bainton.
Darby & Joan Club
The Spring Lunch was held at the Acres, when Members enjoyed an excellent meal prepared and served by M&B Caterers of Thorney. After the meal, Mr Marrington (Peterborough) entertained with slides, the title of which were ‘Elizabeth II and The Royal Family’. The slides were accompanied by a selection of delightful music.
Mrs R Betts won the competition for ‘My Favourite Spring Flower’, Mrs J Garratt second and Mrs F Rawlings third.

Unpleasant smells from the micro-brewery at the White Hart
UPC has received several complaints regarding smells from the micro brewery and is working with Enforcement officers clarify the source of the smell.
UPC would be interested to hear if other residents and passers-by are aware of smells in the vicinity of the micro-brewery.
Apologies are offered to residents for the two meetings which have had to be postponed.
The next meeting on Wednesday May 9th commencing at 7:30 pm will be the Annual Village Meeting followed by the Annual Parish Council Meeting. All welcome to attend.

If you can’t come to any other Parish Council meeting, come along to this one, even just to listen to what others might say!
If you have any suggestions on how we can make our villages (Bainton & Ashton) even more pleasant to live in, if you want to offer our Parish Councillors some advice, if you want to have your say as to how the Parish Council element of your Council Tax bill should be spent -come along to the Reading Room on Thursday May 10th at 7.30pm
Dog Fouling In Cemetery
Barnack Parish Council would like to remind residents that dogs in the cemetery and churchyard must be kept on a lead and that owners do not let them foul there as this can be most offensive to residents visiting their relative’s graves.

Bishop Frank writes: A costly and glorious faith
This phrase, from Michael Ramsey the former Archbishop of Canterbury, was a key theme in the sermon preached by Dean Charles Taylor at his installation in Peterborough Cathedral a few weeks ago.
As many gather this month in the same place to be licensed and commissioned as lay ministers, the words offer an apt commentary on our walk with Christ.
In the midst of celebrations it is easy to forget the costliness of ministry, yet it is short sighted to do so. Ministry can be tough and the relationships into which it draws us can be demanding. Not everyone is accepting or supportive of those who seek to be servants, like Christ. The real needs of people are rarely simple to satisfy, and often it seems as if there was more that we could have done. A genuine call to minister will involve us paying a price and will require broad shoulders and well worn knees.
Yet Michael Ramsey also believed in glory and it was reflected in his luminous face. I remember him coming to our clergy chapter in Durham and speaking for an hour, without notes, on the Transfiguration. We were completely enchanted. He spoke of glory because that is how he experienced God.
There is nothing more glorious than sharing in God’s passion for the world and seeing God’s grace at work in the lives of others.
We are called to live out a costly and glorious faith. They are two sides of one coin, linked inseparably through the work of Christ. From the Cross to the Ascension, in sacrifice and triumph, we identify with the One from whom all our ministries flow and to whom all our service is offered.
Bishop Frank Bishop of Brixworth
Christian Aid Week
It was not an easy decision for Mandy Loveder, Christian Aid’s Volunteer Development Officer in the diocese, to go on a 17 day “exposure trip” to the Philippines earlier this year. Her previous travel experiences were much closer to home, but nonetheless she joined four other new Christian Aid staff for the 12 hour flight to Manila.
“At the very beginning, we spent time with the Field Officer in Manila,” she said. “Father Nonong talked about immersion and explained how to see things from the viewpoint of the people we met.”
The group travelled to Mindoro to visit an advocacy project that was helping people to challenge a mining company’s proposal to dig on their land. Mining would result in pollution and destroy fishing and farming livelihoods. “It was inspiring to see how advocacy was helping people who were otherwise powerless to defend the land they have used for generations,” said Mandy.
At Marinduque the results of pollution by mining in the 1960s were still being felt. Wilson Manuba (below) was 7 years old when the arsnic poisoning began. He grew up fishing in the polluted river and, because of the sores caused, his leg has been amputated and he can no longer work. His wife and daughters have had to go Manila to find work. “The view from his home was breathtakingly beautiful”, said Mandy, “but tourists rarely see the other side of the Philippines”.
At Infanta it was intensive logging that caused problems, resulting in a massive landslide in 2004. The local Deacon was one of the first to start to dig out the village and has since led “food for work” and other reconstruction projects. “First they dug out the churches, then the schools,” said Mandy. “Faith, family and community are the main factors in people’s lives and in some ways that makes them so much richer than we are.”
The trip ended with an overnight stay with a local family, who spoke no English. “In spite of having an intermittent power supply, even the poorest homes have a TV and a karaoke machine,” said Mandy. “Fortunately, we also have one at home, so my version of Hey Big Spender! was well rehearsed!”
Christian Aid week is 13 – 19 May.

It’s showtime in the church tent
Church members in and around Peterborough have collaborated on plans for this year’s “church tent” at the East of England Show.
Ely and Peterborough Dioceses have hosted the tent for several years and this time will be presenting children’s storytelling (by our own Children’s Missioner, Rona Orme), hand bell ringing, church flower arranging and a visit from CROPS (Christian Outreach to Peterborough Schools).
There will also be displays, Fairtrade refreshments and a welcome opportunity to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the Show. Chaplains (above, in 2006) will be out and about talking to stall holders and visitors.
So, if you are going the Show, do call in to visit the church tent. www.eastofengland.org.uk
