Like many people I was extremely ambivalent about the
war which is now underway in Iraq, and which may even be over as you
read this. I hope it will be. The majority of opinion worldwide seemed
to be that a war might be necessary, but not yet. Well, that is all
academic now, since the war happened and we must start from where we
are, not from where we might like to be.
The coalition forces – principally the USA with the assistance of the
UK – have, I believe, tried their best to minimise civilian casualties
in this conflict. There have been, nevertheless, many domestic tragedies
which, although statistics to us, are real and lasting ones for those
caught up in them. War has a lingering legacy of pain and grief, however
it is fought, and there will be much sorrow as a result in Iraq, in
America and in Britain. Our prayers in church over the last couple of
weeks have been mostly for the victims, and for a swift end to hostilities.
Winning the war was never really in doubt, and it is not as I write.
Winning the peace, however, is going to take a great deal of time, patience
and wisdom on behalf of the governments of the USA and the UK – and
a lot of resources, both human and economic.
The main problem for the West in the eyes of the Arab/Muslim world is
that it appears to be so uneven in its approach to the Middle East,
and this is what has bred so much opposition on the streets of Cairo,
Damascus and Amman to the coalition cause of toppling Saddam. To western
thinking this seems a desirable and laudable aim, but to the Arabs the
actions of the West seem only to confirm their opinion of our arrogance
and lack of fairness.
The running sore of the suffering of Palestine lies at the heart of
this ill-feeling and suspicion. The west is hypocritical as far as Arab
opinion is concerned: we back up Israel without question, yet we do
nothing to transform the condition of the Palestinians, whose land Israel
has occupied for years, who have languished in refugee camps for decades,
and who are subject to an often brutal colonial regime. Suicide bombers
are not to be defended, but we do have to ask ourselves the question,
‘Why do they exist?’ Surely the answer is obvious: they exist because
the Palestinians feel an overwhelming sense of despair at the injustice
they suffer. They can think of nothing else to do. This is not a justification,
but it is, perhaps, the beginning of an explanation.
Winning the peace is not just a matter of getting rid of Saddam and
establishing a government in Iraq which is more congenial to western
interests; it is about the far more complicated and yet far more significant
task of transforming the situation in Palestine, and proving that the
West really does mean what it says when it claims to stand for justice,
decency and human rights. President Bush has the power to compel a resolution
of this tragedy: he should now show the same degree of resolution in
this context that he has shown in conducting the Iraq war.

Sunday Services: From the beginning of May to the end July there will
be a service every Sunday in Barnack (except June 8th, see below),
so (hopefully) no more turning up at the Village Hall to find that
we are not there! The month of May also sees the start of a new series
of talks on Christian living, based on the Apostle Paul’s letter to
the church at Philippi. On Sunday 18th May the Youth Worker for Bretton
and Barnack Baptist Church, Claire Hailwood, will be leading the service
with a team of young people from Barnack and Bretton. This promises
to be an exciting morning for the older children, teenagers and adults,
and the younger children will have their own Sunday School session.
See the inside front cover of the magazine for service dates and times.
Open Air Service: We’ll be having an open air service on the afternoon
of Sunday June the 8th. More details will appear in the June Parish
News.
The Light Factory
The Light Factory Easter Eggstra, run by Barnack Baptist Church, attracted
42 local children for a lively evening of games, music and songs,
and a video presentation of the Easter Story. Another Light Factory
event is planned for July, which will include outdoor activities.
So if you have enjoyed, or have missed, the last two events, watch
out nearer the time for details of the Light Factory Summer Sizzler!

Southorpe Parish Council Meeting Monday, 17 March
2003
The main points discussed were:
Two Councillors had attended a Councillor Training session which Ufford
Parish Council had kindly organised. It was very useful and notes will
be circulated to the rest of the Councillors.
The 30 mph speed limit is still being pursued and David Over is working
very hard on this on our behalf.
It was agreed that the Halloween event is not the responsibility of
the Parish Council, nor is it responsible for the carol singing. Both
are privately run events.
The Chairman advised that a planning application had been received to
convert Gazely Lodge into a house and workshop. This property is situated
past the quarry up a track on the left hand side. After a discussion,
the Clerk was requested to write to Peterborough City Council to confirm
that the Council had no objections.
The planning application for Rose Cottage, which Peterborough City Council
had refused, had been passed on appeal.
We have received an unqualified clearance of our accounts for the year
ended 2001/02 by Moore Stephens, auditors.
John Honour advised the meeting that he wished to stand down from the
position of Responsible Financial Officer. Having done the job for the
last five years, he felt it was time someone else took it over. The
Chairman thanked John for his sterling service. David Edwards was elected
and will take over this role with effect from 1st April 2003.
One of the councillors expressed concern at the level of noise that
was experienced due to a party in the village continuing well into the
morning. He felt that people should take into consideration other villagers
in the local vicinity and keep noise to a tolerable level.
It had been noted that there was a considerable amount of mud along
the road by the quarry. It was agreed that if it becomes a problem again,
the Clerk would write to Mick George requesting that he clean the road.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, 9th June 2003 at ‘Farrendon’.
Clerk to Southorpe Parish Council
Friends Of Barnack Church

Barnack Cricket Club Quiz Nights
Great beer (London Pride now on tap), great gossip, great jokes, great
night out! Meet some interesting village idiots folk. Great evening
guaranteed. Come as a team of 4, or as a couple and join a team there,
for an hysterical evening that will set you up for the rest of the week.
Cash prizes! Every Sunday from 8.30pm – 10.30pm.
Barnack Cricket Club’s live music event on Saturday April 12th was a
great success. The band “Stingray” provided a great evening of fantastic
music including old classics and recent hits. Keep your ears open for
further events, which we plan to bring you in the near future. We really
do rely on you for your support. Roger Partidger
Chapel Lane
Several complaints have been received from residents regarding the state
of Chapel Lane in wet weather. It has been impassable at times
without wellington boots. This is due to topsoil being spread
over the path. Please could residents refrain from doing this in the
future.
Notes from the April meeting of Barnack Parish
Council
The last meeting of Barnack Parish Council was held on Monday April
14th at 7.30pm. The following matters were discussed:
Dog Mess - is still a problem around the village. A letter is to be
circulated to all dog owners asking them to clear up after their pet.
Maternity Leave - The Clerk is to start 6 months maternity leave from
May 1st. Several works are still outstanding on the roads around Barnack;
a strong letter of complaint is to be written.
CCTV - Confirmation has been received that the CCTV system has been
registered with the Data Protection Agency.
Planning - Responses have been made to two planning applications and
a further two have been received.
Uffington Road Airey House Site - A discussion was held regarding the
potential development on this site. The Council felt that the issue
of wildlife habitats should be addressed when the land is developed
for housing. Local wildlife agencies are to be contacted.
The Parish Plan and the Village Transport Plan - both need to be written
to give village residents the opportunity to prioritise the needs of
the village over the next 5 years. A public meeting will be held during
the next month.
Stamford East-West Bypass - It was noted that there had been correspondence
in the local press regarding the lorry traffic in Stamford
The lorry ban signs on the B1443 are to be again requested. A survey
is to be carried out during the week after Easter.
General - Quotes are to be sought to fill the hole in the churchyard
wall opposite the old Post Office.
The Fixit Van is to be asked to clear litter and remove weeds in several
areas.
Full versions of the minutes are displayed on the notice boards. The
next meeting will take place on Monday May 12th 2003 at 7.30 in the
Wilfrid Wood Hall.
Barnack Cricket Club
Come and clean up at the cricket club. No not another advertisement
for a cleaner but a chance to win great prizes and cash at our first
RACE NIGHT on 17th May at 8pm sharp. £2 entry on the door. More
information from the Cricket Club and the Post Office.
Barnack Cricket Club presents ‘Stars in your Eyes’ Karaoke. 8pm May
24th £2.50 on the door.
Budding talent required for a hugely fun packed evening. Are you a Liza
Minnelli? Tom Jones? Britney Spears? Arthur Mullard? We’re sure we have
some fantastically talented voices out there just waiting for such an
opportunity to share their talent amongst us. Do get in touch with Janet
at the PO with your favourite artist and track and she will organize
everything else, even rehearsals for your dance routines, if needed.
Could be some record company A&R men in attendance. So come and
enjoy a great Bank Holiday night out.
Bainton
and Ashton Family Day 2003
The date for this annual village event has been set for Sunday 6th July
- put a note in your diary now! A meeting for all those interested in
helping has been arranged for 20th May at Bainton House at 7.30pm. Even
if you have not been involved before, please come along and support
the village and offer any ideas for this year.
St. Mary’s Church
A short meeting will be held after Evensong, on Sunday 4th May 2003,
to consult with The Parochial Church Council and parishioners over the
way forward after Father G. Austen leaves in August. We also hope to
have an update on the Heating Project. J. Wreford and M. Bratley,
Churchwardens.
Fix- It Van Service
The van will be in Bainton and Ashton on Wed 30th April and Wed 28th
May.
Buttercross Club
Our April meeting was well attended, when Sandra Church, the Head of
Nutrition and Dietetics at Peterborough District Hospital came to give
us a very informative talk on her work as a Dietician. After many questions
from the floor Sarah Kirby proposed a vote of thanks.
Our talk at the May meeting on the 7th in the Reading Room at 7.45pm
is to be given by a representative from The Helpston Garden Centre.
At this meeting we are asked to bring along any spare cuttings or plants
to sell to members and friends. Any money collected will go to our chosen
Charities at the end of the year.
Bainton and Ashton Parish Council
Mr. Agnew welcomed three residents to the meeting held in April.
Rural Transport Improvement Programme: A questionnaire was distributed
to each household in Bainton and Ashton regarding the Rural Transport
Initiative. Eleven replies were received prior to the meeting and subsequently
six more. The feedback suggests that people would use public transport
more if the timetable met their needs i.e. transport to and from Peterborough
and Stamford before 8am and after 6pm would be helpful as would transport
to other destinations e.g. Morrisons, Market Deeping and Glinton. The
results will be forwarded to Ben Rushby (PCC).
Bainton Play Area: The Clerk met with John Marsden and David Malia who
viewed the Play Area and have promised to put together a proposal and
plan in time for the June meeting. David Over is helping to keep things
moving.
Land at King Street, Helpston (Torpel Manor): As the owner of the site
has appealed against the Enforcement Notices an Inquiry is to be held
on Thursday, 1st May at Bridge House, Peterborough.
There appears to be a problem with dog fouling in the village. This
is not only anti-social but also a potential health hazard and all dog
owners are politely requested to have consideration for others.
Bonfires may also cause problems for neighbours and again consideration
is requested. Please see the notice boards for guidance on bonfires.
A donation of £125 has been sent to the 7th Peterborough (Helpston
Village) Scout Group.
A letter received by Mr. Agnew from the ‘mad duck woman’ of Ducksford
requesting a duck pond to be built on the Pinfold was exposed as an
April Fool’s joke!
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 10th June 2003 at 8pm in the
Reading Room. Everyone is welcome.
