News November 2003 |

During the interregnum, the Rector's Letter will feature letters
and articles from a number of contributors. This month, Canon Ernest
Orland, has kindly submitted the following letter:
Visiting and Belonging
Many people will know of my love of and involvement in the ancient art
of ringing Church bells. Every year just after Easter. I go on a Monday
to Friday visit to some location in England with a group of clergy,
who are also bellringers. It is an interesting five days in that it
reveals aspects of most participants which their congregations do not
see! It also reveals quite a great deal more about the places they visit.
For the clergy to be visiting a church is almost like coming home, for
they are accustomed to being in a church building. (There was a time
when they lived there – in the Parvis, the room over the porch). Church
buildings never lose their fascination for me. The infinite variety
of age; of architecture; of size; of use. They tell the history of the
people who lived there over past centuries and by the present magazines
and news sheets of the people who live there now.
No church is without its memorials. Those to the great and the good
are large and sometimes huge and in three dimensions, but what interests
me most, are those little brass plaques on items of furniture. The inscriptions
on sacred vessels, on crosses and candlesticks and on the title pages
of books, on kneelers and even on the mundane collection plates. There
is a cup in weekly use at Barnack Church. It has a lid on which is inscribed
the date 1570. Whose gift was it I wonder; whose life does it commemorate?
Such gifts tell the stories of simple steadfast faith expressed by years
of service given to the Lord in all kinds humble ways from churchwardens
to sextons; from priestly ministry to the one who arranged the flowers.
These memorials speak of people who lived long years in one place and
whose lives were known and valued by that community, But we may not
see their like again. For today’s lifestyle is different, it is transient
and temporary. The work situation is one of short time contracts. Moving
jobs and moving homes seems to be today’s permanent occupation. Leisure
activities are so numerous and varied that a new interest can be taken
up each month as the previous one is abandoned
This is a challenge to all Christian people. Wherever we are, the temptation
is not to ‘get involved’ for there may not be a long-term future for
us in this place and among these people. We may not stay long enough
in one place for there to be a little brass plaque with our name on
it, but this does not mean we should withhold our talents from the community
where we are now. Every community needs all its member to contribute
and is enriched when we do.
Canon Ernest Orland

section in the Parish News, to inform fellow villagers of births,
marriages and deaths etc.
Anyone who would like to send a brief obituary for a loved one, who
has lived in these Parishes, or a birth or marriage announcement,
should email their contribution to the Editor by the copy deadline.
Contributions should be a maximum of 300 words. (It might be necessary
for me to edit contributions, should space be in short supply.) Lisa
Chadwick
Replacements for the Rector’s letter

to contribute an occasional letter to appear in this space.
Villagers are also invited to submit articles of general interest

appear at the Editor’s discretion.) Lisa Chadwick

Barnack Parish Council Meeting
Budget - The budget expenditure for 2003/4 is on track.
Kate Francis has formally resigned the role of Clerk due to family commitments.
The City Council have started a Community Alarm Scheme for the elderly
or infirm. Further information is being requested.
A survey of street repair needs had been conducted by a parishioner
which the council agreed to consider.
Cemeteries and Churchyard. A new schedule of burial fees along with
revised cemetery rules were adopted. Copies will be displayed on the
notice boards.
B1443 Automated school warning signs – Vehicle activated signs are due
to be put in place during this financial year. Peterborough City Council
will be contacted to determine the number and type of signs.
Lorry Ban on the B1443 – The council has been exerting pressure for
two years to get enforcement action taken by the City Council and the
police who have argued against all requests to alter the stretches of
the road that are subject to a lorry ban.
The most recent proposal is for a week long traffic survey to be conducted
at the Burghley House entrance before additional HGV restriction signs
are erected at High Street St Martins and the Glinton Roundabout.
A further traffic survey will then be done to measure the effectiveness
of the new signs. If the results are unsatisfactory it is intended that
the Cambs police will conduct a joint enforcement campaign with Lincs
police.
Gillian Beasley of the City Council is to be invited to the next meeting
to discuss the very slow progress on this issue.
A plea was made by a member of the public for assistance in discouraging
bonfires. Could readers please show consideration for others by following
these guidelines: -
Use composting or other disposal methods if at all possible.
Make every effort to burn only dry material. This gives a hotter fire,
which in turn produces less smoke and lifts what smoke there is quickly
upwards.
Choose a calm day so that smoke rises upwards rather than sideways into
neighbouring properties.
The clerk is to address the following:
• Possible repair to the church notice board step.
• Cambs Police to be invited to use their mobile camera unit in Barnack.
• Comments required from Lincs CC concerning an unmetalled road built
by Copthill School, which exits onto the A16 at the junction of Uffington
Road.
• Possible provision of an additional street light on the Little Northfields
estate.
• Replacement of various street lamps reported faulty.
The next meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Monday 10th November in the
Wilfrid Wood Hall. As usual everyone is welcome to attend.
Music & General Knowledge Quiz
The Quiz Night at Barnack School on the 4th of October was a fantastic
success. About 90 people in thirteen teams took part, bringing in a
profit of over £600. This sum will be doubled by Barclays Bank
to make a staggering grand total in excess of £1200.
This goes to Barnack School Association funds, which are used to improve
facilities, provide resources and support the children’s activities
at Barnack School. Very many thanks to everyone who took part, to Anthony
and Sian Howells for preparing and presenting the quiz, and to Barclays
Bank for their generosity. Barnack School Association

Club
On October 1st we held our annual supper in the Reading Room. About
50 members, partners and friends sat down to a delicious fish and chip
supper, fresh fruit salad, coffee and, of course, good wine! After the
meal we were delightfully entertained by members of the Shoestring Theatre.
It was a most enjoyable evening together.
Our meeting on November 5th will be an early preparation for Christmas,
when we will have the opportunity to make our own Christmas decoration
for table, door or wherever you like. For details of items to bring
with you, please phone either 740005 or 740269.
December will be our Christmas party as usual for members and guests.
As mentioned previously, this evening will include the Village carol
singing. (We shall not be carol singing around the villages this year.)
Please all come and join us on December 3rd to enjoy time together,
light refreshments, wine and a Christmas raffle (proceeds to charity).
Make a date in your diary! JM
