News November 2004 |

This month’s letter was written by Andrew James
Fotheringham after a school trip to Flanders when he was aged 15.
It first appeared in the ‘Friends of Barnack Church’ Newsletter.
A visit to Flanders
I went to Flanders last summer with no real expectations other than
to extend what I already knew about the First and Second World Wars.
Having found no direct relatives who died in either war, I would only
be able to help others search for members of their family and learn
more about the experiences of the people who died in war by visiting
the cemeteries in which war victims from around the world have been
laid to rest.
On the second day in France I watched and helped others find members
of their families who had been lost in either or both of the world
wars, and stood silently in respect as the last post was played. However,
I didn’t feel as though I was able to comprehend the suffering that
war had brought to so many people. Through finding their loved ones
in the memorials the people around me had been able to catch a glimpse
of the atrocity of war and to share in some way the emotions of those
who died for their country.
The final day of the trip was spent at the Thiepval Memorial. Everyone
looked upon the sheer size and volume of the monument in awe. We were
told a little about the 74,000 names written upon the memorial. How,
for instance, as bodies are discovered names are removed from the
memorial. As with the other sites I had visited, other people began
to search throughout the monument for direct family or friends with
which they shared a connection. Some found the person or people they
were looking for. Some didn’t.
For some reason, I glanced upon the stone-carved list of names under
the Royal Scots Regiment. My eyes followed the list down and finally
settled across the name Andrew Fotheringham. I was filled with wonder
and I quickly rushed to the register to attempt to find out more about
a soldier who shared the same name as me. Nothing was written about
the soldier other than the fact he was nineteen years of age, served
in the First World War and had the middle name James. It dawned upon
me that someone only four years older than me, at the time he was
alive, and sharing an identical name had died near to the very spot
I was standing. For a sudden moment I shared an emotion with a person
who had lived a separate life and fought a war for me. I thought I
now understood what war meant.
Andrew Fotheringham
Some of the bloodiest fighting of World War One took place in the
Flanders and Picardy regions of Northern France. The poppy was the
only thing which grew in the aftermath of the complete devastation.
McCrae, a doctor serving there with the Canadian Armed Forces, deeply
inspired and moved by what he saw, wrote these verses:
In Flanders’ Fields
In Flanders’ fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders’ fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders’ Fields.
John McCrae, 1915

Music at the Millstone Inn
Come along to the Live Music Evening on the first Tuesday of each
month for an evening of superb entertainment from talented musicians.
All musical styles are played: Blues, Jazz, Folk, Roots. Admission
is free!
In September, we were joined, amongst others, by Lesley, a regular
whose delightful voice is reminiscent of Eva Cassidy, John who sings
traditional folk with an amazingly powerful voice and Columb singing
hauntingly beautiful Irish songs. The evening was given an exciting
edge by the inclusion of superb electric rock guitar, played by local
student John Smith, paying us a flying visit during the holidays from
University.
October was party night, since the Acoustic sessions have now
been running for a year. (Not to mention a certain young man’s 18th
birthday that night!)
We enjoyed beautiful harmony from Nick and friends, superb blues on
piano and guitar from James and Nathan and the inimitable style of
the brilliant Pete. Regulars, Nick and Vivienne sang their own lively
compositions and Peterborough band, Circus, brought the evening to
a rousing close with their own compositions and Bob Dylan as you’ve
never heard him before!
The next session is Tuesday November 2nd and will be in the function
room at the Millstone Inn. Doors open 7.30pm for a 8pm start. See
www.acousticsessions. co.uk for more details.

when St. John the Baptist Church held its annual Harvest Lunch. We were

The parish church of St. John the Baptist will be holding its annual
festival of Carols and Readings on Friday December 17th at 7.30pm.
As usual, I am seeking extra voices for the choir for this service,
so anyone who would like to sing is warmly invited to join us for the
practices, which will be held in Barnack Church weekly on Fridays at
6.30pm.
We don’t hold auditions, and you don’t even need to be able to read
music! If you enjoy singing, I’d love to hear from you. David Chadwick,
choirmaster (740893).

Barnack Baptist Church
November is here and so the winter is really with us, not only the wet,
but cold as well, however the warmth continues in the Village hall with
our Sunday worship.
If you read this in time we are having a Children’s Simpson’s Party
on Sunday 31st October, 6:00- 7:30pm in Barnack Village Hall, all welcome,
just wear something yellow.
On Sunday 7th November, we will be travelling to Bainton for a joint
service in the parish church at 10:30am, please join us.
For the remainder of November, services will take place in Barnack Village
Hall from 10:30am, go on....come along.
The Christianity Explored course has started, but it’s NEVER too late
to come along, this is an opportunity to join in some challenging debate
on fundamental questions such as what is life? and why are we here?
We are now meeting at Barnack Methodist Chapel 7:30pm on Mondays.
If you want to know more about the events we have planned please give
Mark (740017) or Graham (749198) a call.
Barnack Village Hall Quiz Supper
The Community Association held another very successful Quiz Supper on
16th October where nearly 80 people enjoyed good food and drink followed
by an intriguing and entertaining quiz.
Among many who helped, special thanks must go to June Woollard for her
hard work and leadership (and shopping stamina!) and her eight other
hostesses; Brian and Catherine Beardsall, Sara and Ali for taking so
much trouble over the quiz; Patrick Knights for organising the wine
bar and Eileen and Cath for helping us clear up.
Bainton
Harvest Festival
Harvest is a special time for all rural communities and it was a joy
to have a well-attended service in October conducted by Rev. J. Wilson.
The floral display was breathtaking and thanks must go to all involved.
There was also a super children’s display and both of these greatly
added to the enjoyment of the service. Additionally we had lots
of thanksgiving produce on display. Thanks to those who provided this,
which was donated to SHYP House on Barnack Road.
SHYP House
Those at SHYP House would like to thank the congregations at Barnack
Baptist Church and St. Mary’s Bainton for donating the produce given
at Harvest. Situated in Barnack Road, SHYP (Stamford Housing for Young
People) is truly a needy local charity. Set up by local Christian people
in 1995, the house seeks to help those young people in the Stamford
area who are homeless. For a variety of reasons, it is not appropriate
for some youngsters to live at home and SHYP with its resident manager
seeks to provide not only housing, but also ‘parental’ support for its
residents who are usually in their late teens. The youngsters are carefully
vetted on arrival, as we cannot take any with drug problems, or who
have a history of violence or police records. Things we try to teach
them are self-reliance and respect for others and to see them through
their education, into a job and a place of their own. Finances are very
tight, and despite various grants available from social services, we
usually make a small loss at the end of each year. Treats are a
rare luxury, so the generous donations given will help a lot. If you
would like to offer any help or know more please contact the chairman,
Tony Gowers (Bainton) on 740097.
Buttercross Club
Our Harvest Supper was enjoyed by about 65 who sat down to Beef in Beer,
Jacket potatoes, peas, fruit pies and cream and coffee followed.
Peter Larke entertained us with stories from East Anglia - all told
in Norfolk dialect and relevant to the harvest theme. Our next
meeting will be on 3rd November in the Reading Room as usual, starting
at 7.45pm. We shall all hopefully be in artistic mode
as we each try to create a Christmas decoration using flowers, foliage
and any extra Christmassy things we want to bring along.
Please come and join in, bringing your own materials plus wet or dry
oasis, and Sheila and Marjorie will be on hand to help us achieve a
festive look to take home.
Forward notice -
1st December will be our Christmas party night. There will
be a buffet supper, perhaps a few games, and carols. As our normal
carol singing around the village is not taking place this
year, we hope as many of you as possible will join us on our party
evening when we shall sing songs and carols and start advent in
a festive spirit. MG
