Pause for Though from Parish Priest:
Canon Margaret Venables
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford,
Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET
What a delight it has been to welcome the children from
Barnack school into the church! The first experience of this
was when the youngest children came along to visit the building
and learn something about the strange things we have there.
The first thing they noticed was the ‘chicken’ on
the tower, but as soon as they entered the building they
began exploring everywhere: around the altar, into the pulpit,
around the Lady Chapel, behind the organ and hanging on the
font, but the very first question a little girl asked was
why we have a cot in the church.
We smiled, but it was a good question because I was able
to tell her it was because we have a special corner in the
church that is set aside so that very small children feel
they are welcome. And children are welcome. We already have
a number of young people every Sunday who divide into two
groups and have their own activities linked to whatever the
adults are doing in their service, when the children join
us again they are eager to show what they have done and often
that is the moment that most adults realize what it has all
been about!! On the third Sunday of each month we have a
Family Service which is quite relaxed and the children take
a full part in that service. Last month we were blowing bubbles
all over the church - so that we could see that getting too
puffed up results in bursting!! And Monday afternoons you
can find us all crawling about the Lady Chapel with paint
and glue and any little people wanting to join in.
With Christmas on our minds we are also planning other events
with children. We will be learning the difference between
a Christmas tree and a Jesse tree and that will be an important
part of our Advent theme. There will be a Christingle Service
on 27th December at 4.00pm, a Crib Service for small children
on Christmas Eve at 4.00pm and a Family Communion Service
at 10.15 on Christmas Day. So do bring your children along.
But back to the present and the cot! - which was all part
of the preparation for the school’s Harvest Service
for which they had worked hard and again it was a delight
to have them all there, filling the church with their singing,
prayers and readings. People will often say to me, ‘We
must encourage the children because they are the future of
the church’ and I have to say that that is such a misconception.
Children are the church of today, their thoughts, their prayers
are as valid as those of any adult and often far more insightful.
It was Jesus who said ‘ Unless you become as a little
child…’ The children of these villages show
us just what he meant.

BARNACK HILLS & HOLES NEWSLETTER:
Natural England Launched
English Nature, who have been looking after the Hills and Holes since
1991, are no more, but the good news is that Natural England, a new,
larger and more influential body has taken over all of their functions.
This means that there will be no dramatic changes at the Nature Reserve,
which will still be looked after by the familiar team of Chris Gardiner
assisted by Bob Crook.
Natural England have been formed from the merger of English Nature
with part of the Countryside Agency that deals with landscape, access
and recreation, plus the Rural Development Service – the branch
of Defra that handles environmental grants and payments to farmers.
The new organisation came into existence on October 1st and we hope
to have all the reserve signs replaced with the new logo and colours
by the beginning of March. In the longer term, there may be more
resources available for educational and community work to provide
a better service to locals and visitors alike who enjoy using the
Hills and Holes.
If you would like to know more about Natural England, have a look
at our website: www.naturalengland.org.uk
Grazing
Sheep grazing started again in early October thanks to the support
of the Robinson brothers who farm at Southorpe and Elton. Once again
we appreciate the support of dog owners in keeping their dogs on
a lead whilst the sheep are present.
Dog waste
A new waste bin has been put at the entrance to the quarry car park,
and in co-operation with the Parish Council we are keen to encourage
dog owners to clear up their mess from the Hills and Holes and to
deposit it in this bin or the others that are provided around the
village.
Volunteer vacancy
For many years we have recruited voluntary wardens to carry out a
variety of management or wildlife recording tasks, but currently
there are no registered volunteers active on the Hills and Holes.
We have now updated the idea and are recruiting people to specific
voluntary roles. Currently there is a vacancy for a Trail Warden
at the Hills and Holes.
Trail Warden job description:
To help maintain all trails, gates, signs & entrances in safe & accessible
condition:
· Check well used routes and cut back vegetation on a regular
basis
· Ensure gates open and close freely, grease catches and hinges
· Check all warning and information signs and replace as necessary
· Clean and clear round information boards
· Check for dangerous/overhanging trees or branches and report
· Make routine repairs to bridges, fences, gates & fittings
or report major faults
· Remove litter
· Re-fill leaflet dispensers
The work could be done during the week, at weekends or in the evening
and would take an hour or two a week. It would suit anyone who is
fit and active and enjoys doing a little DIY. The role could be filled
by more than one person. Full training is given, tools and equipment
provided, and travel expenses may be available. If you are interested,
please contact Chris Gardiner on 01780 752796.

was decorated for the Harvest service, were taken to Family Care
in Peterborough on September 17th, where they were received with
gratitude. Many thanks to those who contributed. HM
Parish News Magazine Funds
Many thanks to everyone who supports this magazine. Unfortunately
funds are running low and there are organisations out there who use
the magazine regularly but haven’t contributed yet this year.
Also, maybe one or two little brown envelopes for private donations
are sitting on your shelf waiting to be returned. If you are able
to help please send a donation to me, Helen Fancourt, Treasurer,
3 Bainton Gardens, Bainton.
Ufford Ladies
On Tuesday 26th September, David Marrington gave Ufford Ladies a
most interesting insight into the life of our present Queen and her
family. We enjoyed a wonderful selection of slides, accompanied by
some delightful music. It was an evening of history and nostalgia.
On Tuesday evening 28th November at 7.45pm at Ufford Village Hall,
there will be a winter Flower demonstration given by Sheila Bratley
and Marjory Coups. This should bean enjoyable evening with floral

coats and one adult navy blue waterproof golf jacket. If you think
these may be yours please contact Helen Fancourt (740091). Unclaimed
items will be donated to a charity shop at the end of the month.
Barnack Methodist Chapel
We were delighted that Canon Margaret Venables was able to lead our
Harvest Festival service and also join with us for our Harvest Tea.
We are also pleased to report that, during this service, £117
was raised which will be sent to Water Aid. Once again, we had very
good support for our October Coffee Morning which raised a further £128.75
for our funds. Thank you everyone. The next Coffee Morning and Cake
Stall will be held on Saturday, 4 November, from 10 am to 11 am and
we look forward to seeing you then. We will be taking orders for
Christmas puddings, mincemeat and mince pies which will then be on
sale at our December Coffee Morning.
The Good News Library Van
The Good News Library Van will be returning to Barnack on Tuesday
November 21st at 10.30am. It will be at Mike and Pam Mills house
17, Bishops Walk, Barnack until 12 noon. This is a coffee morning
with the option to borrow a book, video or tape, if you so wish.
There is always a good selection of titles to choose from. If you
want a good read I suggest you try ‘God on the Beach’ by
Michael Volland. Michael, a youth worker, spent a week with a beach
mission in Newquay Cornwall in July 2001. Not knowing what to expect
he soon found himself going out to meet the surfers, who had come
there to have a good time surfing, drinking and using drugs. It is
an earthy, honest, inspiring and funny book. Michael believes that
we need to get out of our holy huddles, and take the Good News to
this generation of people. Try it, and see what you think.
Those wishing just to come for a coffee and a chat with friends are
always most welcome. Pam would love to see you there. Do come.
Mrs Lena Grant
Mrs. Lena Grant has now settled very happily into her new home and
would like to thank everyone who has helped her so much over the
past few months. Her address now is Casterton House Rest Home, Casterton
Road, Stamford. Lincs. PE9 2UA.
It really is a lovely home and the staff are exceptional. She seems
so happy there and keeps singing their praises.
It is a great relief to know that she is so content and being well cared for.
Buttercross Club
The Harvest Supper meeting on 4th October was again very well attended and greatly
enjoyed. 62 people sat down to a delicious meal of beef casserole, jacket potatoes
and peas, followed by a choice of desserts and coffee. Philip Richards then exercised
our little grey cells with a specially prepared quiz testing our local and general
knowledge. Many thanks Philip for helping to round off our evening so well. Thanks
also to all the ladies who prepared and served the food, and the gentlemen who
served the wine!
Forthcoming events: November 1st. Please make a note in your diary as there will
be a chance to start some Christmas shopping at our craft mini-market evening.
Petrina McCarey of Barnack will be speaking to us about her successful business
producing luxurious scented soaps and there will be a chance to buy some afterwards,
together with jewellery, glassware, ceramics, pictures, cards and giftwrap stalls
all from local people.
6th December - our Christmas Party Night! This popular event is a great opportunity
to meet up with other residents and get the Christmas season underway. Members
and partners welcome, also all villagers. Please bring a plateful of either savoury
or sweet food for our bring and share table. Hope to see you there! MG
Enjoyable Barnack Harvest Lunch
The village hall was filled with noise and laughter as everyone sat down to enjoy
the harvest lunch which followed the harvest festival service in the Barnack
parish church. The diners enjoyed the meal and our grateful thanks go to everyone
who prepared and cooked the food. Thank you to all who attended. £433 was
raised for church funds.
Flowers and Brasses Rota - St John’s
First of all many thanks to all the volunteers who already are on the fortnightly
rota and who kindly give up a couple of hours to clean the brasses and put flowers
in church when appropriate (no flowers during Lent and Advent).
I know from comments that have been passed to me that visitors to our beautiful
church do appreciate seeing even a small arrangement, it certainly helps to make
the church feel welcoming. We can always do with a few more volunteers for what
is not really a very arduous job - approximately two hours is all it takes and
many people only have one turn a year.
If you feel you would like to be included in this rota please either give me
a ring on 740387 or see me in church. June Graham
British Legion Winter Lecture
Arrangements have now been completed. This will take place on Monday, November
20th at Bainton Reading Room commencing at 7.30pm. The Dams Raid, an illustrated
account of the breaching of the Ruhr dams and the development of Barnes Wallace’s
bouncing bomb. Given by Jim Shortland - 617 Squadron historian. Tickets limited
- £4 available from Malcolm Morrice 740865, Pat Knights 740774 and Barnack
Post Office.
Birth Announcement
WARD on 27th September 2006 , in Alberta Canada to Georgie and Guy,
a son, Noah Finnley , a brother for Caleb, Tiger-Willow, Zachary & Elijah.
Barnack W.I.
The next meeting is on Tuesday, November 14th, at 7.30pm in the Wilfrid Wood
Hall. The speaker for the evening is Phil Rudkin, who will talk on “Wildlife
through the seasons.”
We are always happy to welcome new members, but you can come as a visitor before
deciding to join. In addition to the monthly meeting we run a lunch club on the
last Wednesday of each month, and we also organise visits to places of interest,
and to the theatre.
Should you decide to join in November you could have fourteen months’ subscription
for the price of twelve, as the annual subscription is renewed in January! As
well as our own local meetings we have the opportunity to attend events organised
at county level, and being part of a nationwide, respected organisation gives
us a voice in matters of national concern. This year we have lobbied on the subject
of excess packaging in supermarkets, and on the disparity between the farm gate
milk price and that paid in the supermarket. Do come, you will be most welcome!
For further information please contact me on 740347. Elizabeth Young, Secretary.
Royal British Legion Remembrance Service
This year we shall be holding an Ecumenical Service of Remembrance at st John’s
Church, Barnack, commencing at 9.45am. Following this - led by the Legion Standard
and Escorts - the congregation will proceed to the Village War Memorial for 11am
when two minutes silence will be observed and a further short service held. It
is hoped that as many members and parishioners as possible will attend this important
day in our calendar.

many of our talented local girls, will be singing Christmas Carols one evening
in Stamford in the week before Christmas. More details to follow.

Many thanks to all those who provided gifts for this year’s harvest festival.
All gifts of food/drink have been given to the Stamford home for homeless children
(SHYP) who are extremely grateful to us for helping their tight budget. Also,
the church collection on the day has been added to a number of gifts given in
envelopes, as well as £100 from the PCC, and a total of £389.34 has
been sent to Water Aid, which helps the poorest people on earth provide themselves
with water. This is a tremendous sum from a relatively small church. Thanks a
million!
Mineral Extraction Near Bainton
Residents of Bainton and Ashton will be aware of possible plans to extract minerals
from three local sites - two at Lolham Bridges and one in Tallington Road, Bainton.
All residents were mailed separately about this issue in July 2005 and many people
voiced concerns. We have just learnt that these three sites will not be included
in the plans, which were stated to be effective until year 2021. If anyone
is interested in which sites in the Peterborough area are to be included in the
next stage of consultation, please contact me. Alternatively, come along to the
next Parish Council meeting on 7th November. Tony Gowers, Parish Clerk Tel. 740097

Parish Council Reports and Notices
Barnack
Parish Council Report October
The monthly Parish Council Meeting took place on October 9th in the
village hall. The chairman, four councillors, the clerk, and four members
of the public were present. The chairman welcomed Mr David Roxburgh
to his first council meeting.
New rear gates are being purchased for the cemetery and should soon
be installed. Several newly planted trees in the cemetery have died
because of the drought or being eaten by the deer. Advice is to be
sought as to which ones will need replacing. A further letter is to
be sent to Peterborough City Council requesting tree preservation orders
for all trees on both sides of the crescent on Uffington Road.
A conservation area appraisal will shortly take place of Barnack and
Pilsgate. The conservation officer will consult with the Parish Council
when he has surveyed the villages and before the draft report is published.
The water main is to be replaced along School Road and Stamford Road.
Residents will be notified as to when the work will commence.
Planning permission has been granted for an extension at Cherry Tree
Cottage, Barnack. The council has been asked for comments on applications
for a new wall and railings around The Old Bake House and for the siting
of four static caravans at Pilsgate Farm.
Bus timetables are available in the Post Office for services 401, 402
and 403. Residents are reminded to sweep fallen leaves as soon as possible
into the gutters so that they benefit from the council leaf sweep.
The full minutes of the meeting are displayed on the notice boards
around the village and on the website www.barnackparishcouncil.org.
The next meeting will be held on November 13th at 7.30pm. All are welcome.
Ufford Parish Council
The meeting scheduled for October 11th had to be postponed until 18th
due to unexpected illness.
The following matter would have been discussed at the open forum.
Trees on Ufford Hill:
Peterborough City Council agreed to plant 10 birch trees (Betula ermanii)
in place of the existing Norway Maple trees, which are starting to
rot and pose a danger to the adjacent buildings. Felling is expected
to take place in the next few weeks. The side branches will be removed
first and each tree will be cut down in sections, starting at the top.
The roots and the base of the trunks will be ground down and the remaining
roots left to stabilise the bank and provide nutrients for the new
trees.
The contractors will take away all the remains of the old trees. The
10 new trees, which have been container-grown, will be planted in large
holes in the spaces between the existing trees. They will be 3-4 metres
tall and should be planted straight away, so the bank will only be
bare for a day or two. Inevitably there will be some obstruction of
the footway and the road, caused by contractor’s equipment and
vehicles, but it will only last for a few days.
Applications for UPC funding - a reminder
Organisations which benefit the village are reminded to apply for funding
for 2007-8 by the end of October. Please contact a parish councillor.
Next meeting: Wednesday November 8th at 8pm in Ufford Village Hall.
News from around
the Diocese
Bishop
Frank writes:
More Than Cobblers
Northampton’s patron saint has more to say to us
than our shared interest in shoes. Crispin was one of the early martyrs
who suffered under a particularly brutal Roman Emperor at the end of
the third century. Plying his trade as a leatherworker and bootmaker,
Crispin had an outlook similar to St Paul the tentmaker, who supported
his ministry from his own resources.
It was inspiring therefore to spend the morning of 1 October licensing
the Revd Alan March as a Self-Supporting Minister (SSM). It was also
the opportunity to celebrate the official beginning of the St Crispin
Group Ministry in Northampton, in which Alan will serve.
SSM is a good way of describing those who offer their ministry as a
priest while receiving their pay for full or part-time work, usually
in secular employment. Crispin would have recognised Alan’s calling;
it is a time-honoured expression of an important path in ministry.
At the Diocesan Synod we had, the previous day, agreed our budget for
2007. It will be your responsibility and mine to ensure that the great
variety of work we have agreed to support is fully funded from our
own resources. The Synod wrestled with difficult questions about the
level of parish share and how it is allocated.
In the end however, arguments about the size of our share are put in
perspective by the call to a generous and open-handed support of the
mission entrusted to us by God, here in the heart of England.
Crispin’s story can do much to inspire our own discipleship and
to ensure that in our generation, as in his, the Christian faith calls
forth a generosity of heart which can yet transform the world.
