This month’s letter concerns the charity supported
by many parishioners through the Children's Society boxes.
The Children’s Society
As Honorary Local Secretary I recently received a letter
from The Children’s Society which I thought I would share with you
all.
Dear Mrs Graham
I am delighted to report that in Peterborough Diocese, money collected
in house boxes, parish donations and church service collections have
raised £47,652.16 in the last financial year. Not only that,
but Christingle services all over the Diocese have also raised £24,834.85.
This fantastic commitment by parishes, box holders and volunteers
means that this year we have found ways to reach more children than
ever before – and show them that we believe in their future.
As you know, it was The Children’s Society that discovered the appalling
numbers of children who run away from home and quite how dangerous
the streets are for them. Over twenty years we have shown many rejected
young runaways our unconditional acceptance and love, and helped them
get back their sense of worth. These children have told us the hopelessness
they feel when they have run away – the cold, the loneliness, feeling
looked down on and laughed at. I hope you are as proud as we are of
every child who, with our support and encouragement, has been able
to rebuild their lives after the despair of disruption at home and
the fear of living on the street.
Yet there are still thousands of children on the streets that The
Children’s Society, on our own, cannot reach. We cannot give up on
these lost and lonely children. Your box collection and fundraising
this year have now enabled us to take a major step forward in keeping
the children in your neighbourhood safe. Through the Safe and Sound
Campaign we are persuading Local Councils to finally commit to the
plight of children who run to the streets.
What we have achieved in just two months is already very significant:
34 Local Councils have passed our Safe and Sound test by putting in
place measures to protect young runaways in their area. That could
mean another 22,000 children rescued from the streets.
I would like to thank you, the box holders and all those in your parish
who have enabled us through their giving to achieve this. As you continue
to support us, we will also be able to develop our work with other
incredibly vulnerable groups who desperately need us to believe in
them: disabled children, children in trouble with the law and young
refugees.
Yours sincerely, Martin Field
Fundraising and Campaigns Director
Please think of these children when we come to our box opening in
January. If anyone new would like a box please contact me either at
church or on 740387. June Graham

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the supper quiz has, unfortunately,
been cancelled. I hope to organise a similar event next year. Pam Chance.
Open Forum - Parish Council
There will be a special Open Forum for members of the public at 8pm
on 13th October 2004. This will be followed by the usual Parish Council
meeting.
The Open Forum will be used to discuss Transport Provision in Ufford.
This will include buses, bus stops and subsidised alternatives to public
transport.
Ufford Ladies
We were not sure what to expect when Stephanie Tenneson came
to our August meeting to reveal the secrets of Pilates, but very soon
we were all having a go and everyone enjoyed the evening enormously.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday October 19th at Ufford Village Hall starting
at 7.45pm, when Pat Schmidt will take us “Across the Atlantic aboard
the new Queen Mary 2”. All welcome.
Ufford Parish Council Meeting, September 8th
Public transport: Ways of complementing the limited taxi-bus
service were considered. Dial-a-Ride operates a door-to-door service
to Peterborough on Mondays at 10am and Fridays at 10.30 am. Advance
booking is essential. Annual membership of the scheme is £5. Starting
in November an experimental Dial-a Ride scheme to Stamford Market and
Morrison’s is proposed. The Transport Working Party is considering a
taxi voucher scheme and will report back to the Parish Council at its
next meeting.
Bus shelters: The one at the top of the village has now been
removed as it was unsafe. The Parish Council is waiting to receive details
of designs and prices and confirmation that Peterborough CC will pay
for replacement(s). Do we need bus shelter(s) now we have so few buses?
Strong opinions have been expressed and there will be an open forum
to discuss this issue at the next meeting.
Playing field: Peterborough CC removed the play equipment, claiming
that it was unsafe and it now says there is no money to replace it.
A letter has been sent to ask if it would be willing to sell the field
or part of it to the parish council.
Flooding: Thanks to Ian Glew‘s photographs and analysis, Peterborough
CC is now taking the flood and sewage problems seriously. The month-long
period of rain led to saturation of Church Field, causing a river to
flow through the gate on to Walcot Road. This combined with water flowing
down the hill and footway. It appears that the sewage and rainwater
pipes in Main Street combine in places and the whole system is close
to capacity. Remedial work on the drains has started but re-surfacing
of the road has had to be delayed.
Speeding traffic: The combination of police speed checks and
the temporary fluorescent signs appear to have helped.
It was good to see so many residents at this meeting. Make sure you
attend the next meeting on Wednesday, October 13th at 8pm to express
your opinions. Frieda Gosling

Barnack Baptist Church
As we say goodbye to another sunny English summer, our Sunday Services
have reverted back to a 10.30am start. However please note there will
be no service in Barnack on Sunday 10th October, instead we will be
travelling to Bretton Baptist Church for a service there. If you would
like to come along but don’t know where to go (or can’t get there) then
please give Mark a call (740017).
On Sunday 12th September, we held our Annual Open Air Service, while
the weather was not as kind as the previous year, it did stay dry, although
a little windy and we had a lovely BBQ to warm up around afterwards.
On 4th October we will be starting a ‘Christianity Explored’ course.
This is an opportunity to join in some challenging debate on fundamental
questions such as: What is life? Why are we here? We’d love to hear
your thoughts and we’ll even provide you with a dessert and coffee (or
tea if you’d prefer). If you are interested in coming along to this,
or would simply like to know more about it, please ring Graham Dunn
(749198) or Mark Haines-Eynon (740017).

Barnack Parish Council Report
Barnack Parish Council meeting was held on 13th September in the village
hall.
Michelle Wilson from Peterborough Library and Heritage Services Dept
addressed the meeting concerning the Outreach Services Review.
The housing department is to be asked yet again for more street lighting
in Little Northfields.
The application to have the weighbridge building in Station Yard listed
is to go ahead.
Pilsgate residents are still concerned about the lack of parking space
in their village and Burghley Estates are to be contacted once more
requesting that the new lane behind the Unity Houses be constructed
as soon as possible.
Planning applications have been received for the following:- Erection
of a dwelling at Holly Cottage, Barnack. The felling of a beech tree
at Jingle Cottage, Barnack, and the widening of a gateway opening at
High Rock Gardens, Burghley.
The Cemetery burial fees and rules are to be reviewed at the next council
meeting.
An extra seat is to be provided on Uffington Road, opposite the entrance
to The Acres.
Residents should visit the new Cambridgeshire Constabulary website-www.cambs.police.uk
where details of crimes being committed in their area and how to prevent
them, are displayed.
Residents are also asked to be vigilant over the unauthorised removal
of notices around the village. Also to report to the clerk which street
lights are out.
The full minutes are displayed on the notice boards around the village
and also on the Parish Council website www. barnackparishcouncil.org.
The next meeting will be held on 11th October at 7.30pm.
Harvest Lunch
Following the Harvest Service on the 10th. October there will be a lunch
in the village hall starting at noon. Tickets £6, children 12
and under £3.
Contacts: Maureen Groom, 740339, and Elizabeth Young, 740347.
Royal British Legion
Thanks to the traditional hospitality of the Millstone Inn, over 70
members and their guests enjoyed a splendid summer evening’s party there
on July 13th. The event produced a useful and substantial sum for the
Legion’s Poppy Fund Appeal.
Arrangements for Remembrance Sunday on November 14th this year will
include a short service and two minutes’ silence at the War Memorial
at 11am, followed by a service of remembrance in the Barnack Methodist
Chapel at 11.30am. The Reverend Michael Peach will conduct both occasions.
Following earlier work on the War Memorial and the headstone of Gunner
Pretty, the Legion is looking into the feasibility of refurbishing the
neglected grave of Gentleman Cadet George Ayscough-Booth in the churchyard.
Could anyone provide the background to this young man’s demise at the
age of 21 in 1868 when he had been serving as an officer cadet at the
Royal Academy Sandhurst? We would like to talk to any surviving members
of his family in this respect and obtain details of what must be an
interesting piece of village history.
Wednesday October 27th at 7.45pm is the Royal British Legion Winter
Lecture in Barnack Village Hall. (Not October 25th as previously advertised.)
The tickets are £3.50. Charles Clark (740441)
Barnack W.I.
Members were welcomed to the September meeting, also an open meeting,
by Vice-President, June Graham. Bars of chocolate instead of birthday
buttonholes were presented to six members. The raffle was won by Margaret
Broadbelt.
The speaker for the evening was Mrs. Christine Graham, the Community
Safety Programme Manager for Peterborough, who gave a very interesting
talk on Crime and Disorder. She emphasised that promoting community
safety and reducing crime was a task for all statutory and voluntary
agencies working together and could not just be left to the police.
She contrasted public perception, that crime was going up, with the
reality, that it was actually coming down. Her talk prompted many questions
after which a vote of thanks was given by Adrienne Collins.
The next meeting is on Tuesday, October 12th, when the speaker will
be Mr. N. Watts, and his subject, “Farming and Wildlife”. We are always
pleased to welcome new members and visitors.
Peterborough Cathedral Girl Choristers’ Concert

October at 7.30pm. Tickets only £1 with children free. Fancy dress
optional, but prizes for best costumes. I don’t know why but Roger and
Una come to mind as Beauty and the Beast, but I never did rate Roger
as a beauty! An enjoyable treasure hunt was won by Anita and her brood
and Mr & Mrs Tom Holland. Many thanks to Barnack Millstone and Stamford
Leisure Centre for donating prizes and to our chef on the day, Tony,
for his Barbeque. Note for your diaries, on Saturday November 20th there

Barnack Cricket Club Youth Section
One of the most successful seasons for the youth section of the club
concluded on Saturday 18th September with a thrilling last over victory
for Barnack in an u15’s challenge match against a BCYCA select eleven.
This was followed by presentations to all the squads by Mr Brian Holdich,
Chairman of the BCYCA. The day concluded with a pairs competition for
the u13’s and u11’s which saw victory for Thomas Haines-Eynon and Alistair
Stafford.
The season saw the u15’s winning the Border Counties league and finishing
runners-up in the cup. The u13’s finishing joint top of the “8 a side”
Border Counties league and runners up in the cup along with second place
in the Peterborough league and semi-finalists in the county competition.
Anyone interested in playing youth cricket next season, when it is hoped
to run u11’s, u13’s, u15’s and u17’s squads please contact the ECB qualified
coaching staff (Paul Hart 740674 or David Alvey 740672). Offers of assistance
with the management of each of these squads is essential if they are
to run next season and to build on this season’s success.
Weekly Bingo
It’s new. It’s bigger. It’s even better - and under new management.
Yes, Bingo at Barnack Cricket Club is now on a Monday night starting
on October 17th at 7.30pm and will run once a fortnight from that date.
Future dates can be got from the Post Office. Housey! Housey! Eyes down!
Buttercross
Club
The Boules evening in August was again a great success. This was held
in the gardens of Bainton House and around 40 people enjoyed a glass
of wine and some friendly competition - all under the expert eye of
Andy Totten who kept us all in order and worked out the scores. Thanks,
Andy for your able assistance once again!
The final was between the Top Hats (the Hardy team) and the Aussie Golds
(the Burt team), with the Top Hats eventually winning.
In September we were given a fascinating insight into the varied life
of Stamford High Street shops - past and present. Philippa Massey from
Stamford Museum took us on a fond trip down memory lane with her enthusiastic
talk and slides of the many changes over the last few hundred years.
We will certainly be paying more attention to the details on the upper
storeys in future.
Our next meeting on 6th October is our Harvest Supper - always a firm
favourite in Bainton’s calendar. There will be delicious home made beef
in beer and jacket potatoes followed by fruit pies and coffee, and then
we shall be entertained by Peter Larke, well known for his humorous
tales told in Norfolk dialect.
It promises to be an excellent evening, so please get your tickets early
(only £6-50) from any member of the committee, or ring Judith
Morrice for more details. Hope to see you there.
Forward notice - Countdown to Christmas November 3rd meeting.
Please bring materials (flowers, foliage, artificial or Christmas goodies,
a container and wet or dry oasis to make a decoration of your choice.
Marjory and Sheila will be on hand to advise you. MG
Bainton Parish Council
The business meeting, held on 7th September, was attended by all councillors.
Various highways works, including filling potholes, clearing footpaths
and trimming those trees obscuring streetlamps and road signs were listed
and all have been passed on to the City Council. Following two speed-related
accidents in the village, we have pressed our case to have speed activated
signs similar to those at Helpston and Barnack, and we are hoping for
approval soon. We are also proceeding to restore the Wash Dyke on Ufford
Road to its former condition, and volunteers will be needed to carry
out removal of trees, undergrowth etc. If you can help, please contact
Chris Agnew on 740007 or Tony Gowers on 740097. Next meeting will be
held on 2nd November at 8.00pm in the Reading Room - all welcome to
attend. ARG
Bainton Church Cleaning
The church will be cleaned on October 7th, November 4th and December
2nd at 2pm. Volunteers welcome!
N.S.P.C.C.
A coffee morning will be held on Thursday 4th November 10.30-12noon
at Bainton House. This will include a special sale of brand new toys
given by manufacturers in aid of the charity. Please come and do your
children’s Christmas shopping, at the same time greatly aiding those
children, much less privileged than your own.
Frog Racing
Thanks to all those who supported the frog racing on 21st August. A
fantastic £450 was raised for Thorpe Hall Hospice. Was it the
only dry evening in August??!! ZC
