Pause for Though from Parish Priest:
Canon Margaret Venables
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford,
Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET
The year has turned and as we pick up conkers from beneath
the trees and take in the final harvest of apples, pull the
curtains across earlier each day and start to light fires
we know that Christmas is not far away. What a thought, you
might be thinking!!
However for many people after Harvest, that will be the next
time they are in church - so what is the church doing between
these two big festivals?
It may seem odd to some that there is no chronology of Jesus'
life at this time of year. At Easter and in the following
weeks we know the story, the story which is central to our
faith of the death, resurrection of Jesus and the then the
growth of the early church. So what is this time of year
about?
Essentially it falls into two parts. The first part we call
'All Saints Tide’, which is an opportunity in the autumn
months to echo the natural world's tone of death and remembering.
We recall God's action in the lives of the saints and show
confidence in rejoicing in our fellowship with the saints
in heaven. However while we celebrate the example of the
saints, we feel the loss of those we have known and loved.
But it is a reminder of our Christian belief of another life
beyond this which we know and many people are helped by holding
together All Saints and All Souls. I have found myself, recently,
returning again and again to the phrase, “in this world
we are merely Strangers in a strange land". It is a
good thought. Of course, part of this, too, is Remembrance
Sunday.
The second part of the season is Advent. In the Sundays that
lead up to the full Advent Sunday we celebrate the Kingship
of Christ. Unfortunately much of Advent itself is now lost
in the preparations for Christmas - have you noticed the
tinsel is already in the shops? Advent should be a time of
watching and waiting and if we manage to experience it properly
then the joy of Christmas is so much greater.
Do think about these seasons and try to enter into their
meaning. I think it often seems to people that the church
is just going its own sweet way, but in fact everything we
do is close to the seasons of the year and a part of the
experience of every human being as they journey through the
'Strange Land'.

To all my friends at Barnack School
As we start the new term I wanted to say a big hank you for the wonderful
send-off you gave me last term.
I thoroughly enjoyed that last afternoon at school, marred only slightly
by that wretched illness that struck me down!
Of course I knew that things were happening at school during the
weeks before, but it was still such a surprise to see the playground
and field ‘set out’ as it was, especially with the jazz
band playing in the background – I could not believe it!
I have to say that all through the afternoon the children were amazing:
their behaviour impeccable and their performances impressive: the
Foundation class’s gifts were so useful; the portraits of me
will go up in my new office (in rotation); the words of the song
were so touching; and Mr Blue Sky blew me away. I hope that ‘Green
Island’ thrives, and that all the children who use it have
great fun. Everyone was so generous with their good wishes - though
I thought Mr Haines-Eynon’s description of my office a little
harsh!
The opportunity to meet with parents and so many friends from the
past was such a pleasure, and your gifts quite overwhelming. I will
treasure both the memories and the gifts.
Everything edible has been eaten, but not everything drinkable has
yet been drunk (I am working on it). I wear my watch on special occasions
to keep it new; my painting of the school is on the wall; I have
been to see ‘The Producers’ in London with my vouchers
(and a trip to Athens is pending); I have spent a day driving my
rather stunning MX-5 (burnt forehead); my chimonea is assembled and
awaiting the cooler weather. I haven’t yet been on my helicopter
from Mrs Ruff’s class!
Over the years I have constantly reminded the children at Barnack
that it is one of the best school’s in the country – not
just the local area or the local region – and that’s
a fact. This wasn’t just down to me, but to everyone involved
in the school. I derive great pride from being associated with all
these people, and to have had a part to play in the school’s
success.
Many many thanks once again.

Buttercross Club
You could have heard a pin drop in The Reading Room during our September
meeting as we listened to our speaker, Clare Grant.
Clare is a volunteer worker for the charity “Canine Partners” and
we were totally absorbed as we heard how the carefully selected dogs
are trained to give practical help and so much extra independence
to handicapped people, mostly in wheelchairs.
An added bonus is the emotional bonding and so many new dimensions
to their previously restricted lives. This was very apparent in the
video we watched. Such a deserving cause. I went home to confront
our young Labrador.
An IMPORTANT DATE in our calendar is the Harvest Supper. This year
on Wednesday October 4th. Tickets £6.50 per person and available
from Judith Morrice 740865 Sheila Bratley 740269 & Mary Gowers

of her business. You will have a chance to buy these soaps & more
at our pre-Christmas mini Craft Market. So make out your list. More
details later. J.M

Half Marathon Sponsorship Plea
On the 16th of October I am running a half marathon in and around
Peterborough , and I need your help ! I have entered “ The
Great Eastern Run” in aid of Cancer Research and would love
to raise some money for this worthwhile cause . Cancer affects so
many people and touches the lives of their families and friends .
I am certain we have all been touched by this awful disease . Cancer
Research UK is this country’s No. 1 leading charity, funding
research and treatment .
You may have seen me “running around the villages looking rather
red faced and sweaty training for “The Race For Life” or
a “Cancer Research 10k” run . This is a big step up for
me as I will be running twice the distance I have attempted before,
13.1 miles ! Just writing that scares me!
Please help me raise some money for Cancer Research in this, my one
and only attempt to run, as a short, chubby 40 year old who wants
to help find a cure . Please call me on 740503. Thank you. Sam Harrison.

Parish Council Reports and Notices
Barnack
Parish Council Report - September
The monthly Parish Council Meeting took place on September 11th in
the village hall. The chairman, five councillors, the clerk, Cllr.
David Over and nine members of the public were present. This meeting
followed an Open Meeting attended by many villagers when the outline
planning permission for the site off Uffington Road was discussed Residents
were urged to send in their comments to Peterborough City Council by
September 20th.
At the council meeting it was agreed to send a letter of thanks to
PCC who have decided that senior citizens are now eligible for free
travel on all local routes. All the bus shelters in the village are
to be surveyed. A further letter is to be sent to the TV Licensing
Authority complaining that licences will no longer be issued through
the Post Office.
Mrs Gillian Beasley, the chief executive of Peterborough City Council
then addressed the meeting about the role of parish councils within
the city. She made specific reference to Quality Councils, the Planning
process and highway issues. The councillors found her remarks and suggestions
helpful and the chairman thanked her for attending.
As there was no response to the advertisement to hold an election for
the councillor vacancy, it was proposed that Mr David Roxburgh be co-opted.
A vote was taken and it was a unanimous decision to co-opt him onto
the council.
New wooden gates are to be provided for the rear of the cemetery as
the present ones are very old and difficult to open.
A discussion then followed about the proposed new cricket pavilion.
The council decided to actively support the Cricket Club in the pursuit
of a new pavilion by offering both financial and physical support as
appropriate.
The full minutes of the meeting are displayed on the notice boards
around the village and on the website www.barnackparishcouncil.org.
The next meeting will be held on October 9th at 7.30pm. All are welcome.
Ufford Parish Council meeting September 13th
Trees on Ufford Hill:
Following the visit to the tree nursery it has been agreed that BETULA
ermanii, a variety of birch, would be the most suitable replacement
for the existing trees and this proposal has been sent to the City
Council. With their roughly pyramidal shape and creamy coloured bark
they will provide year round interest and should thrive on this particular
site.
PCC Environmental Improvement Grant
There are plans for further tree planting on the boundaries of the
playing field and a wild flower border along part of the northern edge
of the field.
Applications for UPC funding: Organisations which benefit the village
are reminded to apply for funding for 2007-8 by the end of October.
Please contact a parish councillor.
Free bus pass concession for people aged 60-plus and those registered
as disabled
This scheme is to be expanded across the county, with an anticipated
start date of 1 October. Application forms for a bus pass are available
from the customer service team on the ground floor of Bayard Place
in Broadway or the travel centre in Queensgate bus station.
Computer with broadband access in the Village Hall?
Anyone who would be likely to make use of this proposed service should
contact Sally Ward.
Next meeting: Wednesday October 11th at 8pm, Ufford Village Hall
Bainton & Ashton Parish Council
Your local councillors are:
Chris Agnew (Chairman) Tel. 740007
Sheila Dalton Tel.. 740019
Judith Morrice Tel. 740865
Andy Totten Tel. 740381
Zena Coles (Ashton) Tel. 740550
The aim of the Parish Council is to keep our villages as beautiful,
peaceful, safe, friendly and law-abiding as it can. If ever you feel
improvements can be made, feel free to phone any of these councillors
- they are on your side!!!
The bimonthly meeting was held on 5th September and, after a summary
of how we intend to keep highways and byways tidy and in good repair,
we discussed the problem of the traffic along the B1443. Most people
feel that the new VA signs have helped reduce speed of most vehicles;
we are now turning our attention to the number of HGVs that seem to
come through our village roads.
A meeting of representatives from Helpston, Barnack and Bainton parishes
is being held, with key people from the police and the city council.
We will report on the outcome at a future meeting, but we intend to
make the situation more enforceable. The road verges in Ashton continue
to be a concern and a list of options is being evaluated. Most of the
onus is, however, on the shoulders of those who use the roads in question.
Please try and avoid running your car over the verges, as it causes
ruts to form even in dry weather. Power of the people has succeeded
with concessionary bus fares for the over-60s.
Following lobbying from all local councils, older villagers can now travel to
Stamford at concessionary rates after 9.30am. Finally, we are aware of the increase
of dog fouling on village streets. A letter is being sent to all dog owners to ask
them to clear up after their dog - there is a receptacle on the pinfold
behind the church. We do not want to get heavy, erecting notices and enforcing
penalties, so please try and help in this way for the benefit of all. Next meeting
7th November at 7.30pm.
News from around
the Diocese
Bishop Ian writes
Do we need
more ‘faith schools’?
The question has provoked a lively discussion in the media. It partly
arises from the Government’s proposals in the Education and Inspections
Bill which returns to the House of Lords later this month; and also
from the concern that ‘faith’ schools may undermine cohesion
in our multi-cultural
society.
The Bill extends the existing opportunities for bodies (including
the faith communities) other than the Local Education Authority to
establish new ‘foundation’ schools. In the present climate
of concern about terrorism the possibility of more faith schools has
prompted strong comments about the use of schools to indoctrinate children
into particular ideologies, particularly those which are seen by some
to be anti western democracy.
The Church of England has a long commitment to education. The continued
existence of Church schools not only reflects our Christian heritage,
but the fact that the Church was providing education long before Governments
and local authorities did so. The recent Church of England report The
Way Ahead, chaired by Lord Dearing, advocated a wider provision of
Church schools, particularly at secondary level. Our own Unity College
in Northampton was opened partly as a
response.
The Dearing report also affirms that Church of England schools should
be both distinctively Christian in ethos and inclusive – welcoming
those of other faiths who appreciate the value-based education we provide.
In some communities they are more ethnically mixed than nearby community
schools.
But should the new legislation insist that new ‘faith’ schools
be equally inclusive – with a certain percentage of places held
open for ‘non-adherents’ – in order to promote social
inclusion? Desirable ends – mutual appreciation and understanding – cannot
always be achieved by imposition. Our experience is that they are best
promoted by the ethos itself – distinctive, but inclusive. That
stems from the attitude of the school governing body and staff, who
deserve greater appreciation and support.
Opening up young minds to appreciate the importance of the spiritual
dimension of their personality, the nature of worship and the values
we espouse is a long way from the indoctrination which some think is
the basis of our interest in education. Nothing could or should be
further from the truth.
Education is certainly about one generation handing on to the next
what it finds of abiding value, but it is also the encouragement to
explore God’s world for oneself, to think new thoughts and aspire
to new visions. We all need the insights which young minds can bring.
Diocese launches new adult education courses
Passion for God, a brand new series of short courses for people, parishes
and deaneries was launched in September.
The courses have been designed to respond to the training needs of
local communities and also to reflect the priorities outlined in the
Diocesan Strategy (worship, mission, the church and the world).
Each course will be run centrally but groups can also ask for a course
to be held locally at a time and a place to suit their needs.
A full list of the courses and a schedule of those running during the
Autumn Term is available on the website: www.peterborough-diocese.org.uk
or by calling 01604 887049.
