The Rector’s Letter

Pause for Though from Parish Priest: Canon Margaret Venables
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford, Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET

I heard a warning on television news last evening – ‘Be prepared. Autumn is with us.’ By the time you read this – several weeks after I am writing it, you will only be too aware that it has happened! . Yet, there is nothing to be sad about, as it is often the most beautiful time of the year. Remember Keats : ‘ Season of mists and gentle fruitfulness?’ It has always been one of my favourite poems.
For churches it has long been the time of harvest and there is nothing quite to compare with it. The advantage of being involved with three churches is that I can have three celebrations – and enjoy the special food that goes with the celebrations! But the most memorable moments for me are when small children struggle to the altar with their gifts.
The smallest child always seems to be carrying the biggest marrow (quite who gets to eat it is another mystery) and each one is so delighted to be giving something that will be received with thanks by someone else. And another moment is when the gifts are distributed.
In one church where I worked the children would carry boxes of gifts to the sheltered housing that was in the parish (beware the soggy boxes when it rained!!). They would then entertain the elderly folk with their Harvest songs and it was a special time for everyone, who looked forward to the event year by year. Another joy has been taking goods to Christian Family Care, where they rush to help unload the car and are just so thrilled with all they receive. It is humbling to be a part of all this.
Yet again this year there will be many places in the world where there is no Harvest and little or no food and as we give to local communities we need to be mindful of those people – there are so many more of them than we can imagine. Dr Stephen Collins is a friend of mine who works in many parts of Africa and who speaks powerfully about the reality of the situation where many are simply starving to death. He has been able to do something about this – but what might we do – apart from giving money generously?
Firstly we must never cease to pray that the world will come to its senses and that there will be a more just society. Secondly, we need, whenever possible to buy fairly traded goods so people get a better return on their labours. Thirdly we need to be aware of how much food we waste and buy with caution.
Harvest is not just about ourselves. We do need to thank God for his bounty in this part of the world and for all we receive, but let us never, ever, forget those who most need our understanding.

Margaret

Buttercross Club
The Olympic Games normally attract our attention every four years but Dr David Babbs reignited our interest with his slide show of the British Olympic rowing team at Athens 2004.
As doctor to the team, David was responsible for the welfare of all entrants, including strictly monitoring their diet, hygiene, exercise and physiotherapy treatment. Three weeks intensive training in Cyprus and the Italian Alps was followed by two weeks competing in Athens. We were amazed by the huge volume of equipment and kit which was allocated to each competitor thanks to the generosity of the Heritage Lottery Fund; this funding has contributed hugely to the success of many British athletes. Seeing slides of the vast dining room and huge selection/quantities of food, the tight security with armed guards and the immense computer room – not to mention the state-of-the-art facilities – gave us all some idea of the epic scale of these Games. David clearly enjoyed his involvement in the British team’s success at winning four Gold Medals.
Wednesday, 7 October is the date of our annual Harvest Supper. Tickets this year are £7 and can be bought from Roe Yates on 740833 (early purchase avoids disappointment). This year’s after-dinner speaker will be Mike Baumber of Rutland Sailability. The evening promises to be a good one! JJ

Barnack W.I.
At the September meeting we were delighted to note that Barnack figured in the last two County Federation newsletters.
In July we had been asked to provide a photograph for the cover, and Michael Jarman had submitted a beautiful picture of a Chalk Hill Blue male butterfly on knapweed on the Hills and Holes. There was also an article about Barnack inside.
Then in the following month it was reported that Susan Jarman had won this year’s Federation Bowls trophy. So congratulations to Sue and Michael for putting Barnack on the map. Our speaker for this month was our good friend, and W.I. member, Sheila Berrill who told us about the prisoner of war camp at Norman Cross. This was the first purpose built prisoner of war camp in the world and was for the French during the Napoleonic wars. The buildings were mostly of wood, but there are two stone built houses, occupied by the camp superintendents, which survive today at Norman Cross. Sheila also explained about the bronze eagle, originally erected in 1913 to mark the centenary of the camp’s closure and which was stolen several years ago.
Recently a replacement had been carved as a result of generous public subscription. It stands near the site of the camp boundary on the original plinth. It was also reassuring to note that, unlike in many subsequent concentration camps, the inmates were well cared for. Many of them collected money to place a plaque in Yaxley church honouring one of the superintendents who had died. It was a most interesting evening.
Our next meeting is on October 13th at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, and we are always happy to welcome new members.
Elizabeth Young

The mobile VAS signs initiative has started and volunteers reported 17 vehicles speeding on the B1443 in the first hour. More volunteers are welcome, contact Andy Totten as above. The lorry ban appears to be working reasonably well though the Speedwatch volunteers also noted and reported three.
There was considerable discussion about the provision of allotments for residents who have requested them. Both sites are on the B1443
Zena Coles asked for support for the Barnack Ward leadership fund initiative on the creation of wildlife corridors at a meeting in Barnack Village Hall on 29 September at 7.30pm when there will be a speaker on “It’s a Bugs Life” Also an Environment grant has been applied for which will be used on planting in the children’s playground including a “willow tunnel” (suggested by the Franks children) and in the Reading Room garden.

Barnack Parish Council Report
Barnack Parish Council’s monthly meeting was held on Monday 14 September 2009 in the Village Hall. It was attended by the chairman (Mrs Woollard), 5 members of the Council (Mrs Berrill, Dr Burrows, Mr Roxburgh, Mr Brassey and Mr Barker), 2 members of the public, PC McCallum and the clerk (Mrs McCallum). Planning applications have been received for an extension at 10 Saxon Road, Barnack (no objection provided that the Beech tree remains untouched and the materials are matching the existing).
Approved planning applications were received for an extension at 2 Linden Close, Barnack, and to fell 2 trees at Biliwings, Walcot Road, Barnack. The Enforcement Officer has written about the gate posts at The Bartons, Pudding Bag Lane, Pilsgate, but have not answered all of Barnack Parish Council’s questions, so further contact will be made. Planning permission has been granted, subject to areas still being negotiated, for the Airey House Development Site. Work should commence at the end of September/beginning of October. Burghley Estates will be written to again requesting for the removal of the Heras fencing on the Millstone Lane site. At the Cricket Pavilion Committee public meeting, the drawings of the proposed pavilion were circulated with general approval. There has been no response from Peterborough City Council regarding the planning application as yet.
The committee met again on 2 September, and the fund raising group had met previously. Almost £8000 has already been raised, with £1500 pledged from the WI and the Horticultural Show. A Bridge Day on 23 October is hoped to raise £600. It was agreed that a target for fund raising should be £40,000. Their next meeting is on Monday 28 September. A letter will be sent to Cambridgeshire Constabulary and Highways to express Barnack Parish Council’s appreciation for the Weight Limit on the B1443. PC McCallum reported that Speedwatch is up and running, and he has received registrations of approximately 60 vehicles, including a bus, that were seen speeding. Please watch your speed. A bin will be requested by the seat at Summerhouse Corner, and the Fix-it-Van will be asked to empty it, along with clearing up around the other seats in the village. Please do not drop litter.
The three broken signs around the village (on Walcot Road and Main Street) will be reported to Highways. BT will be contacted regarding the painting of the telephone boxes in Barnack and Pilsgate. A full copy of the minutes are available on the notice boards in Barnack and Pilsgate, and can be found on www.barnackparishcouncil.org .The next monthly meeting will be held on Monday 12 October 2009 at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall, Barnack.

Archdeacon David writes
It is of tremendous benefit to all of us if we can experience, from time to time, something overpowering in our relationship with God. Such experiences, like some of those described in this issue, nearly always involve some effort – a long journey, or a deliberate change to the usual pattern of our lives.

Few of us can make such special efforts very often. Whilst it may be tempting to “linger on the mount of transfiguration” most of us have responsibilities at home, in our place of work and in our community. It is here that our relationship with God grows and deepens, week by week, as we meet with our fellow disciples for prayer and worship in our local church.

It is here also that we are fed with God’s word and sacrament, and here that the fellowship of others gives us new strength. In some cases our worshipping numbers may seem small, or the style of worship a bit hum-drum, after the excitement of being part of a large crowd at a great Christian gathering.

Yet it is in the patient seeking after God, Sunday by Sunday, within the fellowship of our local church, that most of our Christian growth takes place. It is wonderful when this is backed up by a pilgrimage or visit to somewhere memorable, but these are not and never can be the sum total of our life of faith.
But there is more to it than that. Our Sunday worship needs to be accompanied by a daily encounter with God through prayer and Bible reading.

For most of us our daily prayer will take place in solitude and it can be hard to keep up the daily rhythm of prayer on our own. Yet there is no substitute for it. Cultivating a pattern of prayer which is as regular and natural as breathing is the surest way of ensuring that we have the strength and spiritual energy to face the challenges and struggles of our lives.

Jewish people are taught that prayer should be focussed in the home, the synagogue and the temple. For Christians this translates as the home, the local church, and – where? Well, the “temple” may be a great cathedral or event that we only visit once in a while, or a place of particular holiness – perhaps Jerusalem itself.

Wherever your “temple” is, be sure that you seek God also in your home and church – and may he bless you in your daily living, in your weekly worship with others, and in all your journeying.

David Painter
Archdeacon of Oakham
