The Rector’s Letter

During the interregnum, the Rector's Letter will feature letters and articles from a number of contributors. This month, Revd. Pip Clements, our Rural Dean, has kindly submitted the following letter:

Dear Friends
What glorious weather we have enjoyed during August! This has allowed the harvesting, ploughing and sowing to go on at a pace, during what must be the busiest time of the year for the farming community. What better time for us to gather and celebrate God’s goodness to us at our Harvest Festival Services over the next two months in the parishes and Deanery. Such events take a great deal of planning, organisation and hours of work setting up – do please give them your full support.
We are now into the Interregnum, that piece of elastic that fills the gap between one incumbent leaving and another arriving. Elastic is a fair word to use, because it stretches. An interregnum can last between 9 to 18 months or more. If there is major reorganisation of parishes involved, then with all the consultation involved it can take longer. Not only is the time scale elastic, also we have found that parishes and people have found themselves stretched and discovering new talents as they take on the day to day running of the Church and Parishes. However they are not left alone to do this: there is a backup team of the Archdeacon, Rural Dean and Diocesan staff to consult, advise and help out. We are very fortunate that there are retired clergy available to take services on a regular basis, along with Readers, organists and choir members. I am extremely grateful for all that they are doing and for the hard work of the Churchwardens in ensuring that services and pastoral care goes ahead. Should help be needed in an emergency, then please contact me as Rural Dean and Sequestrator and I shall do my best to help out and advise.
The future ministry in the three parishes is subject to consultation. Already we have had one public meeting at Barnack, and the Archdeacon will be meeting the PCCs in the near future. Though there may be some uncertainty felt about the future, we can use the interregnum to encourage one another by regular attendance at church, by meeting the visiting clergy and readers with a welcoming smile and an open heart, ready to learn and grow in our Christian Faith. Churches that have risen to the challenges faced during an interregnum have become much stronger and sure in what they are doing in and for the community. This takes us back to the Harvest theme at the beginning. We discover during an interregnum a harvest of gifts and abilities that can be used to God’s glory and help in building up His Church and people. Let us also thank God for all the ministry and skills of Glyn and Heather Austen over the past 15 years and wish them every blessing in their new home at South Witham and Glyn’s new work at Stamford Endowed Schools. I know that we in the Deanery Chapter (clergy) will miss Glyn and his insights and comments.
With warmest best wishes, may God bless you richly this Harvest time and the days that are ahead.
Yours in friendship
Pip Clements

14 Holly Chadwick , Nora Hanna,
21 Hannah Wright, Imogen Cunliffe
28 James Chadwick, Andrew Fotheringham

* During the next few months we are planning to ask servers to take their turn on duty on the same Sunday every month. This means you know in advance when you will be serving and with whom you will be serving.
It is very important that you try to be in church on your set Sunday, because there may not be anyone else available to serve on that day, now we have fewer servers on the rota.
If you cannot be there, please can you swap your turn with someone else on the rota for that month?

GENERAL NOTICES

New section for the Parish News: Announcements
It has been suggested that readers might appreciate an announcement section in the Parish News, to inform fellow villagers of births, marriages and deaths etc.
Anyone who would like to send a brief obituary for a loved one, who has lived in these Parishes, or a birth or marriage announcement, should email their contribution to the Editor by the copy deadline.
Contributions should be a maximum of 300 words. (It might be necessary for me to edit contributions, should space be in short supply.) Lisa Chadwick

Replacements for the Rector’s letter
During the interregnum there will be no regular contributor for page two of the parish news, where Father Glyn’s letter appeared.
Arrangements have been made for contributions up to Christmas.
All members of the various churches within the Parish are warmly invited to contribute an occasional letter to appear in this space.
Villagers are also invited to submit articles of general interest to fill this page. Contributions should be a approximately 600 words long.
Please email them to me at Lisa.
(Please note: it may be necessary to edit contributions and each will appear at the Editor’s discretion.) Lisa Chadwick

No 7 Dot Com Productions
This is an amateur dramatic organisation based in Orton Waterville which will put on a play (this season’s current offering is ‘Educating Rita’) for a nominal charge to cover their expenses. The idea is that any village organisation which may wish to raise funds can then advertise the play, sell tickets, serve refreshments, hold a raffle etc. Anyone wishing to raise funds for their society or club and is interested in pursuing this should contact Bryan Booth or Ann Williams on 01733 760762/391946.

The Children’s Society
The Children’s Society is holding a sponsored walk around Ferry Meadows Country Park on Saturday 11th October 2003 between 10.00am and 5.00pm. There are two walks, one of 6.8km and a shorter one of 4.0km. In this benefice we do support The Children’s Society through our annual box giving but this is an extra fun opportunity which you could enjoy with families and/or friends (dogs on leads are also welcome) to provide funds to help the very vital work of the Society. I have some Registration and Sponsor forms if anyone is interested. All participants need to register their intention of taking part by Friday, 10th October. June Graham, 740387.

‘Computers for the Terrified’
These classes will be held in Barnack Village hall beginning on Monday 15th September for 10 weeks.  The classes will run from 1.00 - 3.00 and will be limited to 6 people. Phone Betty Moll if you are interested on 01733 252045.

Ufford Ladies
Pat Schmidt‘s reminiscences about her visit to China proved entertaining and informative and we enjoyed looking at her photographs and her collection of paintings, fans and porcelain. Make sure you don‘t miss our next meeting on Tuesday September 23rd at Ufford Village Hall at 7.45pm. Jill Collinge, making a return visit by popular demand, will talk about “Curiosities of the Counties”. All very welcome.

Lena would like to thank everyone who helped her through the last few months of Bill’s illness and his death. It was a difficult time made so much easier by the tremendous love and support from the whole parish. Thank you for all the wonderful cards and flowers and continued help with transport, shopping etc.
Michael and Sue would like to add their own thanks: not being able to pop in every day is made much less of a worry knowing there are so many caring people always doing things to help. Thank you everyone.

The new season of Carpet Bowls commences on Thursday evening 18th September 7.30 - 9.30pm, and Tuesday afternoon 23 September, 2.30 - 4.30pm. We shall have our usual social events - Fish & Chip suppers etc. All are welcome. This is not an energetic game and is suitable for all ages. Brian would welcome names for the League team as soon as possible. Pat Barton (Stamford 762538).

St. John the Baptist Church, Barnack
The church will be having the Charity Stall on Stamford Market on 17th. October 2003. Donations of Produce and Handicrafts to sell will be very much appreciated. Contact Ann Davies, 740403.

Mick and Valerie Kettleborough would like to thank everyone who sent flowers, gifts and cards for their Ruby Wedding Anniversary. Special thanks to Mum, Amanda, Lucy and Tom.

Barnack Methodist Chapel
We’ve had some interesting times in the Methodist chapel in Barnack this summer.
Our minister, Rev Malcolm Peach, did a six-week exchange with Rev Buddy Royston, from Bellbuckle in Tennessee. He sure was different in the nicest possible way!
The Methodist Church is run on a circuit system and Barnack is one of nine churches in the Stamford and Rutland circuit. We have two ministers and many local preachers who lead our services. Recently, our Public Issues group organised a time of prayer in Barnack which was attended by people from our various churches.
We also hosted the main course of a meal as part of a car treasure hunt when Barnack chapel was flooded with hungry people! It was held to give folks from the rest of the circuit an opportunity to see our lovely village.
On September 20th, at 7.30pm, there will be a Praise service when the Barn Hill music group, led by Mrs Julia Husbands, will come and lead us in praising God using many, modern hymns and songs.
Methodism was born in song. Come and join us and learn some of them. There’s always a cup of tea afterwards.
Thank you very much to all those who helped us to raise £129.09 - including a donation of £5 at our August Coffee morning and Cake Stall.
We have decided that because of the competition with Burghley Horse Trials we will not have a coffee morning in September and so the next one will be on Saturday, 4th October at the usual time of 10 am until 11.30 am.
You are invited to join us for our Harvest Festival service which will take place on Sunday, 28th September at 6 pm and will be conducted by the Rev Fred Day.

Barnack Cricket Club Festivities
Barnack Cricket Club presents a special “Back to school” theme evening this September.
It will be an out of this world night out with lots of wine, whinge-ing and song. Get those St Trinian’s costumes out girls… are you a naughty schoolboy? Maybe you’re more the stern teacher type!
Enter into the spirit either way and have a great time. Date and time of the event can be obtained from the PO and Cricket Club.

Barnack Baptist Church
Barnack Baptist Church will be meeting again during September after the August break. Dates and times for the Sunday services are shown on the inside front cover of the magazine. On Sunday 14th September there will not be a morning service, instead we are holding an open air service for all ages in the afternoon at 4pm on the school field. There will be activities for all the family. Bring along a picnic, if you wish, to eat afterwards. Please come along!
Our All Age Harvest Service will be on Sunday 12th October at 10.30am and will be led by Rev Anthony Wareham.
Everyone is very welcome to any of our services. There are Sunday School groups and a crèche is available. Tea, coffee and cakes are served after the services that we hold in the Village Hall.

Music and General Knowledge Quiz
Advance notice for your diaries of Barnack School Association’s Quiz night.
This will now take place on Saturday 4th October at 8pm at the School Hall. £6 including supper.
This is always a great night and raises lots of money for the School. Please come along and give your support.

Barnack Bowls Club
Colin Swann Day was blessed with glorious weather and after starting at 9.30 am the eventual winners at 5.30 pm were Paul Buckley, Susan Jarman and Brian Walsh and the close runners-up were Alan Rice, Mima McKellar and Peter Neal.
We also had marvellous weather for our Gala Day on August 13th, when 24 teams battled it out to take the £60 prize which again had kindly been donated by our greenkeeper, Mark Hammond. A team from Greetham were the eventual winners but Brian Bagshaw’s team, who were the runners-up, kept the flag flying for Barnack. From the comments received, everyone enjoyed the day which helped us to increase our Club Funds for the Clubhouse improvement by another £665. Thanks are due to Brian Barton who had the arduous task of organizing the competition and of course the ladies who provided the refreshments.
The winners of the July 200 Club Draw were:
No 55 Mrs Judy Francis £25
No 61 Mr Peter Holt £15
No 24 Mrs Pat Gyles £10

Darby and Joan Club
Earlier in the summer, Darby and Joan Members and friends, including twelve ladies from Wittering, were taken to Wyvale Nurseries at Crowland for their Summer Outing. Time was spent in the Garden, Pottery and Glass Departments, followed by afternoon tea.
Mrs Gale won the Egg Timer competition, Mrs Porter second and Mrs Briggs third. Card Bingo was played and Jenny Wade was the caller.

BAINTON AND ASHTON

Frog Racing
The Frog Racing evening held in Ashton last month raised a magnificent £913.68 for Friends of Stamford Hospital appeal and Cancer Research UK.
I would like to thank everyone who came along and supported the event - about 100 people in all.
We had a super evening - the weather was wonderful and everyone was extremely generous. Thanks also to all those who helped in any way. ZC

Bainton & Ashton Buttercross Club
Our annual ‘Boules evening’ once again proved to be a great success in the idyllic setting of Bainton House gardens. Families and friends, in ages ranging from 2 years to 80+ competed in friendly rivalry, refreshed by the odd glass of wine, for the honour of being champion of the evening. The lucky victor being ‘The Jack Smashers’ (Oliver Joy and Dean Cutler) Well done!
We are indebted to Andy Totten for his expertise in organising and to Major and Mrs Birkbeck for their hospitality. A wonderful evening was had, much enjoyed by all.
Our September meeting, on Wednesday 3rd September has had to be changed. We are very lucky, at short notice, to have Ian Graham from Pilsgate coming to give us a talk on the Great Exhibition and with newly-acquired slides of the Crystal Palace to illustrate the talk. It will be held at 7.45pm in the Reading Room.
Our annual supper will be held on Wednesday October 1st. Please make a note of the date as it is the very first day of the month. Tickets and further information will be available at our next meeting. JM
