This month’s letter recounts Elizabeth Young's
experience of Holy Week in Barbados
Holy Week in Barbados
Earlier this year I satisfied a long held ambition – to watch a Test
Match in the Caribbean. The West Indies, players and supporters alike,
have always so enjoyed their cricket that I looked forward to watching
a match on their own home ground. One of my early cricket memories
is seeing my county, Hampshire, play the West Indies touring team
of 1950 which contained among others the great three “Ws”, Weekes,
Walcott and Worrell. They all hailed from Barbados and this was where
I chose to go. The timing was right except that for the first time
in many years I would not be in Barnack to share in the liturgy of
Holy Week.
Barbados is quite small for an independent country, about the size
of the Isle of Wight, and is divided into eleven parishes. Bridgetown,
the capital, is in the parish of Christchurch. The other ten are named
after saints. I was staying on the West coast, in St. James, close
to the little community of Holetown where the first English settlers
landed in 1625.
The England touring team of 2004 was in fine form and won the match,
and with it the series, in three days, allowing those of the party
who wished to do so to seek out a Palm Sunday service. I chose with
two others to go to the nearby church of St. James. This is close
to the first landing and was consequently the first church to be built
on the island, in 1628. It has suffered hurricane damage in the ensuing
years but the present building dates from the 1870s and is a graceful
stone church containing the original font from 1684 and an old bell
dated 1696 and inscribed “God Bless King William”!
In many ways it was much like being in Barnack except that it was
HOT, and the palms we were given had been cut from the local trees
and were 4 feet long! We began the service in much the same way with
a procession out and round the church singing the familiar hymn, “All
Glory, Laud and Honour...”, though with all the doors and windows
open it was easier to hear and keep in time with the organ! At the
end of the service, which had followed the traditional Palm Sunday
liturgy, I thought that a 4 foot palm might be difficult to manage
on the flight home, and so took away just one small frond.
On Maundy Thursday I decided to go to the service in Bridgetown Cathedral.
This was for all the priests, deacons and lay workers from all the
parishes on the island. It would be akin to the one which takes place
every year in Peterborough Cathedral, but to which I had never been,
when the holy oils to be used in the coming year are blessed. This
was a solemn occasion with fine music and a suitable homily from the
Bishop to his flock giving them hope and encouragement for their ministry
in the ensuing year.
I was to return home on Good Friday so could not go to the service
at noon. I went instead to the early morning service of Mattins and
Solemn Collects, with sermon, once again at St. James. It is a thriving
church with many activities, including Choir, Sunday School, Prayer
Group, Bible Study, and an Outreach Programme to those in different
kinds of need, much like our own Parish Volunteers.
I felt very much at ease in this little church, and though many miles
from home, a part of the wider Anglican Communion.
Elizabeth Young.

Report on Ufford Parish Council Meeting and Open Forum on Aug
4th
There were only 2 items on the agenda
The White Hart. A detailed report was given on the PCC Planning and
Environmental Protection Committee Meeting at which planning permission
was given for all the proposed alterations, at the White Hart. A request
for a postponement to allow time for discussion on the details of the
micro brewery was ignored and the Ufford residents and parish councillors
opposing the plans were outraged when the Case Officer stated in public
that there was no need for a full democratic process and that information
is passed onto the PC as a courtesy. The discussion at the forum concentrated
on the issues of noise control and the micro brewery. The Parish Council
agreed that it would request our MP to refer the lack of time for consultation
on the micro brewery to the Planning Ombudsman
The proposed Bonfire Party. Following all last year’s complaints about
car parking Mick Thurlby approached Ken WaIler. Parish Clerk, seeking
the Parish Council’s involvement. Ian Glew, Chairman, presented a detailed
analysis of proposed parking spaces, road closures, diversions stewards,
liaison with
emergency services, expenses and possible donations to local charities.
It was felt that the Parish Council should not get involved as councillors
would have unlimited personal liability. There was doubt whether there
are enough residents to act as stewards. Full risk assessment and advice
from the Health and Safety
Executive were recommended
Parish Council Meeting on Wednesday August 11th
Planning White Hart:
The Parish Council has asked the Planning Department to send details
of the scheme for soundproofing the proposed Orangery before it is approved
by them.
Letters have been sent by the Parish Council and many residents to the
Environmental Health Officer. Mr Lynden Leadbeater, complaining about
disturbance caused by the excessive noise from he wedding party held
in a marquee at the White Hart on Saturday August 7th. The noise, which
was heard by residents in their homes, with doors and windows closed,
all over the village, was audible from as far afield as Barnack. This
is quite inappropriate in a rural setting and justifies concerns about
noise nuisance from the pub when it has been extended.
Clarendon Cottage. Despite objections from the Parish Council and neighbours,
in particular regarding loss of light at Hall Farm House, planning permission
was granted for the demolition of the flat roofed extension at the back
and its replacement with a sunroom and bedroom with a Bradstone ridged
roof.
New plans were agreed to re-locate the proposed double garage in the
south west corner of the garden.
Village Environment:
Footway and verge at the top of Ufford Hill: prompt action is required.
Drains and sewage: recent storms have highlighted the problems and photographs
have been sent to PCC Highways and Planning depts. We have been told
that major changes to the camber of the road and the drop kerbs would
cost more than the entire annual budget for such work. Negotiations
continue.
Play Equipment: sources and funding are being investigated
Bus service: users report continuing problems. A minibus link to the
Delaine service at Bainton is the popular suggestion. We shall be re-convening
the Transport working party.
Speeding cars: PC McCallum has already made 4 visits and agrees
there is a problem. He will be doing more spot checks. Temporary 30mph
fluorescent signs are being displayed.
Bus shelters: their condition continues to deteriorate. The
clerk is getting details of designs and prices. The one down the village
will be replaced; neighbours have appealed for the one at the top to
be removed and not replaced.
Overhanging vegetation: the clerk is requesting appropriate action at
Walcot Road, by the church gate, by the cricket club, at the T-junction.
Heating oil: anyone interested in cooperating re heating oil
deliveries to obtain a discount? If so contact: Ken WaIler at Briar
Way; Marholm Road.
The next meeting is on Wednesday September 8th at 8pm. All welcome.
Ufford Park Cricket Club
The Hunts League Team has only 5 games left and is at present in 1st
position, after winning 6 games and losing 3. The First XI, playing
in the Rutland League Division 2, is in 8th position – just one place
above the relegation places, having only won 3 games. The Second XI
in Rutland League Reserve Div. 2 is rooted at the bottom, winning only
2 games. The season is drawing to a close and, with only 6 weeks left,
there is still a lot to play for.
The biggest success story has been the formation of an Under 9 Team
in the Border Counties League with 19 boys and girls registered. After
losing the first few games, they improved with coaching and won 2 games
to finish halfway. Special thanks go to Nigel Clough, Andy Hills, Danny
Harrington, Chris Parker and Elliott Wilson and to the parents for their
support. It is hoped to also run an Under 11 team next season. EW
