The Rector’s Letter

Pause for Though from Parish Priest: Canon Margaret Venables
The Rectory, Barnack, Stamford, Lincolnshire. PE9 3ET

It may be this summer we have been more aware of the need to conserve water than ever before. We have been used to using it every single day, often without thinking about it. We use it for drinking, washing, cooking, flushing our toilets and even the luxury of using it in our gardens and to swim. In total, each of us use up to 150 litres of water a day.

For one sixth of the world’s population collecting enough water to survive dominates their lives. Over one billion people do not have access to safe drinking water and 2.6 billion have nowhere safe to go to the toilet. Take just a moment to think how different your day would have been if you had to walk for several hours to collect dirty, unsafe water before you or your family could drink, eat or wash this morning. Now think how different your day would have been if instead of 150 litres of water, you had just 10 litres to use for drinking, cooking and washing.
Sa’a Ali faces this reality every day, she is 13 years old and lives with her family in Fikayi in Northern Nigeria.

“I have to collect water three or four times a day for my family,” she says. “It is my duty to make sure the container for home isn’t empty. When I am not collecting water I grind guinea flour to make morning and afternoon food or I go and collect firewood. I always try to collect water with my friends or sisters. It is a long way to come and I am afraid on my own. I am afraid of the distance, being alone and of animals and snakes.”

This year the charity WaterAid wi working with its partners to build a well in this community. It will make a huge difference to their lives and girls like Sa’a will be able to go to the school which the village is already starting ti build.

It costs just £15 for WaterAid to provide one person in the developing world with access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.

Our churches will be raising much needed funds for WaterAid this year at our Harvest Services. That means our harvest festivals can make a real difference to people like Sa’a. Please come, enjoy giving thanks for all we have and give generously that others may enjoy the basic essential of daily water.
Margaret

As mentioned in last month’s edition of the Parish News, due to the lateness in forming the new core committee, it has been decided to suspend this year’s show and to re-open it again in 2007. In the meantime, we would very much welcome new and enthusiastic committee members, a gardening Tsar would be a great addition, in order for us to plan a really great family show for 2007. So please, all those with previous show history, those also who have some great ideas, thoughts and suggestions on how we can all make the 2007 show a great success, do please get in contact. Are you a business that would like to talk about sponsorships and/or advertising opportunities, or maybe even exhibiting in some way? Bainton And Ashton Buttercross Club
After the beautiful July weather we hoped for a continuation of those warm summer evenings for our annual Boules competition. Alas, the weather turned cooler, but the competitive atmosphere was as hot as ever when we eventually got going! Thirty people entered and as usual the team naming caused a few laughs. Our usual Master of Ceremonies and Referee, Andy Totten, was unable to make the revised date but Tony Gowers stepped into the breach and proved a worthy deputy - thanks to him for keeping order! The winners this year were visitors (the Czeck mates) with the Shepherdesses (Elaine Ward and Pat Stott) coming second. The Rocky Kirbys, Tinkle Tops, Red Barons and Bainton Barracudas were all challenging until the final rounds. Thanks as always to Major and Mrs. Birkbeck for the use of their garden for this popular event..
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday the 6th September at 7-45pm in Bainton Reading Room, so do please come along. Our speaker will be Clare Grant on ‘Canine Partners for Independence’ which is a charity serving severely handicapped people - the dogs are highly trained and we will hear something of this amazing story. Village Design Statement
It is now five years since the Barnack Village Design Statement was written, therefore it is now time to review and update it ready for reprinting. This is an important document and does form part of the planning process. It has to be taken into consideration by the planning officers, when decisions are made for our village. The Design Statement was written for the village, by a group of approximately twelve residents. Reviewing the statement will not be a lengthy process as most of the original text is still relevant. If you would be interested in the village in which you live and would like to help ensure its future, then please ring Mrs Janet Banks on 740047, who has very kindly agreed to take the names of the volunteers.

Easton On The Hill Heritage Day Sunday 3 September
On Sunday 3 September, as part of National Heritage Week, the Priest’s House at Easton on the Hill - one of the National Trust’s smallest buildings - will be open from 2pm to 4pm.  There will also be a second-hand bookstall together with a plant stall organised by the Easton on the Hill Horticultural Society. Additionally, Mr Stephen Hart, a retired architect who has a great knowledge and love of medieval churches, will conduct two guided tours of Easton Church - at 2.30 and 3.30. All are welcome.

Parish Council Reports and Notices

Ufford Parish Council meeting August 9th
Trees on Ufford Hill:
Following another meeting with the PCC arboriculturalist, another list of suitable species has been drawn up. A sub-committee is planning to visit the tree nursery at Ely to see the container-grown trees and to obtain a second opinion as to the suitability of the various species for this particular site.
PCC Environmental Improvement Grant:
A 75% grant towards plants and labour is being offered again this year, with the aim of increasing biodiversity in the area. UPC is proposing to submit an application for some drought tolerant plants and perhaps one or two native trees to enhance the edges of the Playing Field. However members of UPC cannot undertake the maintenance of the garden, (for example weeding and watering) and would be pleased to hear from some residents who would like to volunteer their services). It could be divided into several little plots, which might be of interest to some of the children or teenagers in the parish. Please let one of the parish councillors know.
Applications for UPC funding:
Organisations which benefit the village are reminded to apply for funding for 2007-8 by the end of October. Please contact a parish councillor.

News from around the Diocese

Archdeacon Christine writes:
Schools need our prayers
At the beginning of a new school year I would like to encourage you to pray for your local schools on a regular basis, both in your personal prayers and during public worship.

I know that in some parishes there are strong links between church and school. When this is the case, whether the school is a church school or not, prayer can be informed by what is going on in school. In my experience the news of an imminent OFSTED inspection usually results in fervent prayer from all concerned!

I recently read a very helpful leaflet, “Praying for a school” which is given to the Bishop’s Visitors who support our church schools by regular visits as well as by prayer. I think the leaflet deserves a wider circulation, so if you would like a copy please contact the Diocesan Board of Education (01604 887063). It gives very practical advice about how and when to pray, who and what to pray for.

Our prayers for schools should, I am sure, begin with prayer for the children and young people who attend them. Jesus had a special concern for children: he welcomed them to listen to him and spend time with him. For Jesus, the child was a sign of the kingdom of God. At this time of year we can pray especially for children starting school for the first time and for those who have moved to a new school. While many take to school like ducks to water, these first few weeks can be an anxious time for some children and for their parents.

Prayer and action go together. Are there ways in which you can offer more support to local schools? Does this need to be co-ordinated across parish or benefice boundaries? Is ministry to schools being considered as part of your Deanery Mission Plan? There are so many opportunities for ministry among children, as well as staff and parents, that follow from an engagement with schools.

Prayer includes thanksgiving; please give thanks for the many Christians already involved in the life of schools as staff, governors, or in another capacity. Please pray too for the committed staff who serve our Diocesan Board of Education. As Chair of the DBE I am immensely grateful to them and to members of the Board. If you have experience in education and feel that you have gifts to offer the DBE, do get in touch.
Ven Christine Allsopp. Archdeacon of Northampton
