Dear Residents,
I hope by the time that you are reading this edition of Parish News that I am now back on my feet and up and running following a broken ankle in March. Thank you to residents and neighbours from my beat that helped me whilst I was stuck on crutches hobbling around with visits and company to keep me going!
I am now training residents who are interested on Speedwatch. It is a scheme designed to allow residents to help reduce speeding locally by displaying a large electronic board that flashes up to the driver their speed and encourages them to drive slower and safer through our villages. Those that are caught breaking the speed limit are written to and / or visited and warned about their driving.
If you are interested in becoming trained up then contact me direct on either norman.mccallum@cambs.pnn.police.uk or by leaving a message for me on 0345 456 456 4 with your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address.
We are also trying to encourage membership to the electronic e-cops scheme. It is a free scheme that you can join by logging onto www.cambs-police.co.uk and look for the e-cops logo on the left of the page and follow the instructions from there. You will then be able to receive up to date information from your Neighbourhood Policing Team as to what we have been doing on the beat and what is happening in your neighbourhood to keep you one step ahead of the criminal and hopefully not become a victim of crime. Please join up today!
Please continue to remain vigilant in your village and report all suspicious activities to Cambridgeshire Constabulary on 0345 456 456 4. Thank you Norm McCallum

In our local area we are blessed with three denominations and four active churches. You will receive a warm welcome at each one – we look forward to seeing you.

Baptists 400th Birthday.
In July of this year Baptists from around the world met in Amsterdam to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Baptist Church.
The early Baptists had been influenced by the puritans and reformation movement that had swept through Europe giving birth to the Church of England (1534) and other Protestant churches across Northern Europe. Some scholars suggest that the first Baptist Church met in Augsburg Germany in 1524, however the World Baptist Alliance traces the Baptist Movement back to 1609.
In the early 1600s a group of religious refugees from England gathered in the back room of an Amsterdam bakery to pray and study the Bible together. By 1609 a group of them, under the leadership of Thomas Helwys and John Smythe had formed a believer’s church. Some of the core convictions of the Baptist church were; a separation from state control, the practice of believer baptism, and the principle of congregation government whereby the members of each individual church are responsible for the affairs of that church.
From these modest beginnings the Baptists spread through England, North America and Europe and beyond to become a worldwide movement. In the early days, along with other dissenting congregations the Baptists faced persecution and were forbidden from holding public office or studying at university. Many chose to emigrate to North America to settle the New World becoming influential in the birth of the USA and the drafting of the American constitution.
The emergence of the Methodist movement under John Wesley in the 1740s had a huge impact on both the established (C of E) and non-conformist church in England. It is during this period, which coincided with the Industrial Revolution that the Baptists experienced their fastest growth and benefitted from increased religious toleration and mass population migration from rural to urban areas. In 2009 the church map of England is significantly different to that of 1609; we now benefit from a richly diverse range of worship styles, liturgy and organization structures. This diversity is demonstrated within our local community where Baptists, Anglicans and Methodists meet each week in our villages to worship God, each sharing a different but intertwined history.
The different denominations demonstrate that Christianity is a faith that allows each individual freedom to build their own relationship with God. The denominations are united together with certain truths such as “Jesus was the Son of God and that it is through his death that we are offered salvation” Each Christian follows a lifelong journey of faith and is at liberty to express that faith with integrity in different ways. For some, the Anglican liturgy and style of church organisation is helpful to them, others may prefer Baptist, Methodist or other denominations. The Christian church is a living body that changes over time, this is its strength rather than its weakness. We only have to read the New Testament to understand how the early Christians wrestled with this challenge and consequently grew in their faith as they began to discover how to live as Christians in a changing world.

The Buttercross Club
Our annual Boules evening was an enjoyable event and although more of a social occasion than a competitive sporting one, the two usually combine to make for a summer evening which is quite a highlight in the Bainton social calendar!
Fortunately, the rain held off, even though the storm clouds were gathering and the winners this year, who richly deserved the much-prized trophy, were Tiz Abbott Donnelly and Josh who beat the senior Abbott Donnellys. Our thanks once again to Mrs Birkbeck for hosting the event and to Andy Totten for maintaining his ingenious and quite unique scoring system.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday, 2 September at 7.45pm when Dr David Babbs will be talking to us about his involvement with the British Rowing Team at the Olympic Games 2004. All are welcome. JJ
Burghley Parking & Pilsgate
For residents of Pilsgate parking over Burghley weekend can be a trying time. Some visitors to the Horse Trials seem to think that Pilsgate is an extension of the car parking facilities, blocking the limited parking available to the residents. I have contacted both Cambs police and Burghley Horse Trials themselves to see how they can help us. Cambs police response is not to move our cars and Burghley have yet to come back to me. If you feel as strongly as I do about parking in the same village as you live in then please contact either Cambs Police or Burghley Horse Trials direct. Alternatively please do contact me I do have some suggestions, for example we could have temporary resident parking permits with signs displayed at the entrances to the village notifying people that there is no parking available for Burghley visitors. If enough people supported this then I would have no problem in organising and contacting PC McCallum to see what support he could offer and whether we would be doing it legally. My email address is blackcatoffice@aol.com, email me with your contact details and any comments you may have.
Barnack Baptist Church
During the summer our Minister, Graham Dunn, has been on a mission trip to Uganda. Graham spent three weeks in Uganda leading a Business Development Programme in three towns in the North of Uganda – Soroti, Lira and Arua. In recent years this area has been devastated by rebel activity, particularly by the notorious LRA whose methods included the abduction of children to become child soldiers. Thankfully this area is now relatively peaceful.
Graham has been encouraging small and medium sized businesses to improve their efficiency through effective record keeping, planning and management techniques. The conferences have been received well and follow-up meetings with businesses have seen many immediate positive results. Unfortunately the Ugandan economy is held back by corruption and extended family commitments that often suffocates emerging businesses. Handling these issues for Christian business people can be particularly difficult, open discussions around these topics proved very informative and illuminating.
The Business Development Programme purposefully does not make grants as its aim is to encourage self-sustaining business excellence. The programme has received the support of the Pentecostal and Baptist national leaders and the Bishop of Arua, Dr Joel Obetia who kindly opened the way for Graham to speak on the regional radio station and to preach in the Cathedral, a rather daunting task considering size of the congregation and the scale of the place compared with Barnack School Hall. Graham will be returning to Uganda next year to continue this ministry.

New Year Day Lunch
To celebrate the millennium a group of very good friends and I decided that we would organise a lunch for the village on New Years Day. Well as you know it was such a success that we carried on for the next year and the next and so on! We have thoroughly enjoyed it, but have decided that ten years is long enough, so we will not be organising a lunch in the village hall on January 1st 2010.
I thought if I made the announcement soon enough someone else may like to take the job on. Thank you to all those who have supported us for the last ten years and a special thank you for all those who have helped me.
June Woollard
Milkman of the Year
George, our wonderful milkman, last week gave all his customers an entry form for Milkman of the Year. Last year as you know George was the regional finalist. He is, as I am sure you will agree, not only a good milkman, but keeps an eye out for us all and is ready to help in any way that he can. Therefore please do fill in your entry form and maybe, if we all do George could get even further this year. He certainly deserves to do so. Entry forms have to be completed and returned to George by 12 September

Parish Council Notices
Bainton & Ashton Parish Council
Your parish councillors are: Chris Agnew (Chair) Tel. 740007, Andy Totten 740381, Judith Morrice 740865, Zena Coles (Ashton) 740550, Jane Franks 740004.
The Parish Council met on 21st July with all councillors present, together with David Over (City Councillor) and 10 members of the public. A number of Highways issues were reported which are all being dealt with, and Coun Over offered to make representations on our behalf about the proposed lighting for the Pinfold.
Much of the meeting was taken up with discussing plans for the provision of allotments in the village, and the ‘Bainton Poors’ land in Helpston Road has been selected as the best site available. The Parish Council may have to head the lease in such circumstances, and as there are a number of factors to be considered- such as screening, security, parking, access, water supply and financial arrangements- all parties concerned are working together to progress this.
Using grants from the Community Leadership Fund, oak benches have been erected at 9 different sites throughout the ward, and it was agreed to apply for further grants to allow for more planting opportunities.
The next meeting will be on 8th September at 7.15pm in the Reading Room with Adrian Chapman, the new liaison officer from Peterborough City Council coming to speak about his responsibilities.
Barnack Parish Council Report
There have been several meetings recently to discuss the plans of the Airey House Development site, and several residents, along with the Parish Council, have sent letters to Peterborough City Council to air their points of view regarding this matter. The plans have still not been approved, and so as new applications are submitted, further meetings will be arranged. Please check the village notice boards regularly for details of any future meeting.
Barnack Parish Council’s monthly meeting was held on Monday 10 August 2009 in the Village Hall. It was attended by the chairman (Mrs Woollard), 5 members of the Council (Mrs Berrill, Dr Burrows, Mrs Dolby, Mr Brassey and Mr Barker), 4 members of the public, PCSO Whittaker and the clerk (Mrs McCallum). Planning applications have been received for an extension at Tresham Lodge, Station Road, Barnack (no objections), for the removal of 2 trees at Biliwings, Walcot Road, Barnack (no objections), for an extension at 2 Linden Close, Barnack (objection raised regarding the flat roof at the rear of the property that would be seen from Bainton Road), and for the building of a new sports pavilion at the Cricket Club, Barnack (no objections). Barnack Parish Council has asked the Cricket Club Pavilion Committee to act as a sub-committee of the Barnack Parish Council to take the project of a sports pavilion forward and to report back to each of our monthly meetings on progress. Bill Harris will act as the Site Agent, the Clerk will sign the legal documents on behalf of the Parish Council. There have been some parking problems in Orchard Road and in Main Street. PCSO Whittaker will address these issues where it is a Police matter. A meeting will be arranged between Barnack Parish Council, Cross Keys Homes and Highways regarding the parking in Orchard Road. Travel Choice has informed us that the last Delaine bus to Stamford will be leaving 10 mins earlier as of 30 August 2009. Additionally, a letter will be sent regarding the small village bus as it travels too fast for the road conditions. The overhanging trees on Walcot Road/Bishops Walk will be reported to Highways. The grass at the War Memorial needs to be re-seeded in the autumn. This will be done, along with the removal of the tree that has died there. The Fix-it-Van will be asked to cut back the leaves around the signs around the village. A full copy of the minutes are available on the notice boards in Barnack and Pilsgate, and can be found on www.barnackparishcouncil.org .The next monthly meeting will be held on Monday 14 September 2009 at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall, Barnack.
